I have an Imac i5 based, the connection spped over ethernet and wifi is very slow, at most 1Mb/s while my Sony Vaio Windows 7 wifi gives a 64Mb/s number, what to look for?

This is my first post here at MacRumors.com and I'm quite happy to be here posting as it's a good sign for myself and Apple. I am a Windows user for 15 years and Apple really has come so far in recent years that it is maybe time for change.There are a few problems and I'd like if you have the time to give your opinion:In recent months and especially during the time of the latest MacBook Pro I was pretty impressed and tempted to buy a MBP 17" to upgrade my 2007 Sony 15" Core2Duo Vaio. The time has come for an upgrade in April 2010 as I simply cannot wait any longer, I have become to involved in following stories here at MacRumors and even looking at Sony's offerings.

I'm newbie an just using apple the first time in my life. I bought imac i5 2.7 ghz..Can someone help me about my problem? I already check with my inet provider that my connection got no problem at all. But i felt that it is slow and the worse case again when back to my old windows notebook, i got no problem with the connection. The imac performance itself got no problem.

Amazing... a full 1080p resolution display in the new 13" Vaio Z offering. When will Apple get off it's ***** iOS high horse and give a damn about computing again?ALL of the 2010 Mac updates were a joke except the new Mac mini. Isn't it sick that the only Mac truly getting any love is the mini desktop in a mobile Mac world? Does this make any sense? Seriously, a complete lack of innovation in the new Mac notebooks. Two years since the last MBA update. Apple really has had its time to work on iOS products like the iPad and iPhone. I really hope SJ's has an answer to Sony, and every other ultraportable on the market, within the holiday season. I'm burning a few CD's to listen to in my car...
the audiobooks i'm burning are going at the maximum speed, as its simply an audiobook...but as for my music, i'd prefer the best sound I can get..
..So this leads me to wonder if a slower burning speed, such as 2x or 4x, are better than say 12x, for sound?
Can anyone verify this provide some insight on the matter?

I'm very new to macs and I've been able to purchase most of the applications I need to use in mac formats (quickbooks, office etc.) but there are some things that still need windows like all of the software for my Garmin units as well as some marine navigation software. My question is rather then having to purchase more software, and give more money to MS, can I use a copy of windows that came with one of my old dell or vaio laptops to run windows on parallels so I can run those few programs i need?

We have a desktop PC wired into an Airport Extreme and then my macbook pro wirelessly connected. We are both running at the same speed - slower than dial up! I had Time Warner talk me through checking the connection and everything is fine on their end. They said it the problem was airport. I called Apple and was suggested to "change channels" to an odd number instead of using "automatic" through manual set up. Tried that - just as slow. I also upgraded to 7.4.2.

My previous TV (HD Ready, 720p) was linked to my 2008 iMac with a VGA cable (with a mini-DVI to VGA adapter on the Mac end). It worked perfectly fine, but I can't get it to work with the new TV. Could you please tell me what resolution, frequency, and colours I should use to make it work?
Please not that I do not want a HDMI cable. I know it'd be better and easier, but my computer is quite far away from the TV and an HDMI cable of that length would be way too expensive. I'd rather find a way to make it work with the existing VGA cable. I just need to find the right settings for that VGA input. The TV doesn't recognize the signal right now.

Most people here know that if you have two computers, both with the same hardware, and one is running Mac OS X and one is running Windows, the Mac is usually faster in most aspects. I know that Windows is, in general, a much less efficient OS, but specifically, why? I've heard that a lot of it is due to the fact that Windows will try to do 100 useless things if you ask it to do one simple thing, also I've heard that Microsoft wrote Windows by getting loads of people to go off and do different parts of the OS, then they would just paste it together rather than taking off the useless parts, fitting each part together and optimizing it. I just need a more straightforward answer as I will be using it in an essay.

I'm not sure what is causing it....Is there a log that will show me any memory leaks or at least what was using up the most memory/CPU at the time it freezes? a lot of times it freezes awhile after the screensaver kicks in.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI've been posting quite a bit lately as to suggestions as to how to speed up my network. Whatever I do, I cannot get to my iMac to connect to my network faster than 5-10 Mbits/sec. If I step 6 inches out of the room with the iMac, I get 70-100 Mbit/sec. I've finally come to the conclusion that there is some type of interference in the room with the iMac and no matter what I try, I'm not going to be able to get good wireless network speeds in that room.
Since the room is on a different level than my wireless router, a direct wired connection from my Time Capsule is out of the question. But, what if I bought an Airport Express, put it right outside the room with the iMac and ran an ethernet cable from the Airport Express directly into my iMac? Would that have any positive effect?
I have a really crappy connection at home, about 50 ~ 60 kpbs. LOL. Cheapest AT&T DSL, $19.95. I have a wireless router hooked up right now. Is it possible to utilize my WIFI and ETHERNET all at the same time to double my connection speed? If so how? I'm running 10.5.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI am a new Mac user. I bought a 27" iMac today to replace a dead PC. My download speeds are AWFUL on the Mac. While using the PC, my maximum download speed on a 6 mbit connection was over 850kb/sec. Now, with the mac, I can barely manage 250K/sec downloads. I am using all the same equipment and cables as before (not using the wireless, and I have it disabled), and if I plug in another PC into my router, it will get the 850+kb/sec download speeds, no problem at all. Is there a setting somewhere that I can change to get things working properly? Poor speeds occur no matter what program I am downloading from, whether it be Safari, FTP, or whatever. I just installed parallels, with windows, and I can download at my old speeds. How do I do it in native Mac mode then?

I'd like to be able to selectively limit/disable the connection, without having to remove the ethernet connection on said computer. I can access the router status and enable/disable the connection for the entire network, but I can't seem to selectively limit/disable a particular connection.

I'm running on a Radeon x1600 (MacBook Pro). As far I remember the graphics drivers are the same version under 7 and Vista (i.e. the Boot Camp driver).

Is this normal? I ran many virus scans and I am clean.Is there something that is slowing it down? I am also using wireless connection.
