My almost new macbook pro was showing a white screen with a flashing folder with a question mark. I was able to do the internet recovery, installing OS X on my external harddrive, but how do I use my mac without the harddrive plugged in?
View 4 Replies View RelatedHow hard is it to replace the hard drive? I have a disaster recovery company step up to get all my info off of it if they can. But I really don't want to spend the money to have someone pull out the HD and put a new one in if I can do it myself. I have experience building pc towers but I haven't ever pulled apart an iMAC. Its an iMac 23(or 24) inch from Dec 2007 (I don't have the model info on hand as the box is in storage).

I just bought a new iMac. I have been trying all week (with no success) to transfer files and apps from my previous iMac. The last time I tried to transfer, I used target mode on the old computer. It looked as if it was finally working, so I left with 2+ hours remaining on the transfer. When I returned, the computer was frozen and nothing would work. So I held the power button to turn it off. When I tried to turn it back on, there was only a gray screen with a flashing folder with a question mark. I feel like I have tried everything listed in other discussions. The only thing I am not able to try is to reinstall Lion because the new computer did NOT come with an OSX disc of any type.

I turned off my macbook pro last night, then when I went to turn it on this morning, I got a flashing folder with a question mark. So I ran lion internet recovery. Disk utility came up and so I tried to repair the disk and reinstall lion osx, the problem is my mac HD isn't showing up, so I couldn't run either. I haven't turned off my mac in a few weeks, I usually just put it to sleep at night or let it go idle. How to back-up my files.

My macbook greeted me with the gray screen and folder with question mark this morning - I've tried everything listed on the Apple website for this issue, I've tried running the Disk Utility (although I'm getting an "error no valid packages" message) and I've tried running DiskWarrior. Disk Utility sees the harddrive - DiskWarrior does not.
The hard drive only "clicks" 3 times at bootup, but it stops immediately after. Can I conclude that the hard drive is not entirely defective that it's just a bad header, or boot sequence or whatever "fixable, I won't lose all my data" error? My other question is that if I can see the hard drive in Disk Utility, is it possible to create an image of it that I could say extract the data from on another Mac?
I have read most things to do with the grey screen and the screen with the question mark, and it's obvious I have to put some sort of disks in, but there is already a disk stuck in the drive?

about a week ago my hard drive died. i took it in to be diagnosed... I purchased a new 250GB hard drive and decided to install on my own. I followed the detailed instructions on [URL], it was a breeze... but, now the problem is installing OS X onto my laptop. I can't find the original start up disk for the iBook G4, so I tried using Mac OS X Tiger, V10.4. The installation DVD loads up fine, but when it arrives at the "Select a Destination" step no Icons appear on the screen... my new hard drive seems to be hidden.
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust rec'd a new(er) to me Mac Pro 1.1 w/no HD & possibly bad video card 8GB memory and very dirty inside. To test this mac, I put in a new seagate barracuda SATA 1TB HD, hooked up display and tried to fire it up. Got to chime in and then the display showed a grey screen w/file folder with a question mark on it. Only had a mouse last night when trying this and my G5 has a bluetooth keyboard and the mac pro isn't bluetooth, so where do I go from here?
I'm thinking a wired keybrd would allow me to open drive bay to receive Leopard Install disc that I already own and proceed from there? I figure, once I can get this up and running and know there is no problems, I'll dismantel and clean. Also all 8 GB memory was installed on the top riser card? I reset the memory banks to 2 on the top card and 2 on the bottom card as this is what the downloaded manual shows, am I reading that right?

I get this question mark along with a folder when starting up. I tried holding down the option key when turning on the power and then I get an internet recovery along with a globe. I click on the arrow below it and it takes maybe 15 minutes to start up. Then i get this disk utilities screen. I'm now unable to do anything. When going into disk utility, disk 0 shows with Mac OS X base system underneath it. All the clickable buttons are faded out. Is there something wrong with the hardrive? and where could i get this fixed? There isn't a warranty on it.

I am currently getting a gray screen with a folder and question mark. I have tried resetting the PRAM and when I hold down the option key, no drives show up at all. I also can't boot into OS X in safe mode. I don't hear a clicking noise that you usually get from dead hard drives.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Lion on my MacBook Pro but it didn't sit well with my compuer. It became sluggish and would take forever to load applications, pictures, music, movies, etc that only took SL a few seconds at most. I decided to downgrade back to SL so I put in my Install DVD (version 10.6.6) and tried to format the hard drive so I could start new. However it would not work with the CD, so I continued looking around online and I came under the impression that if you erase the hard drive it will allow you to start new (in my case, with SL). However now I get a gray screen with a folder with a question mark.
I do not have my files backed up through Time Machine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy computer froze on me and the rainbow cursor appeared. I forced my Macbook Pro to shut down and when I restarted it, a grey screen appeared with a flashing folder that has a question mark inside.
I tried the following:
1) restarting it holding down the "shift" button and nothing changed
2) restarting while holding down opting+command+p+r until I hear it ding 3-6 times - nothing changed
AND what causes this? This is not the first time I have heard of a Macbook Pro doing this...

My computer froze while I was doing homework so I tried to restart it and when I did, It doesn't show the apple logo but rather a File Folder with a ? Symbol! I tried reselecting the hard drive but it didn't show! I CANNOT lose my information on my harddrive cause I have very IMPORTANT work on there! I have mac OS X Lion! So I don't have a start up disk for that and the one i have is stuck in my computer right now!

I recently took my macbook in to an Apple Store and was told my hard drive may be gone. Before I took it in it was working fine except for the Mail, I was unable to send mail. Now when I try and turn computer on an alternating folder with a ? mark keeps on toggling off and on on screen.

Yesterday while I worked on the mac it had froze up. After the restart it shows one folder with question mark in the center of the screen and can't load the OS.
I am trying to reinstall the os from my leopard cd but when i have to choose where to put system folder in Disk utility, there is no hdds there. The only device i can see is my dvd rom. I tried to attach external hdd but it doesnt shows too.
Have tried different things that have been suggested....reboot PRAM holding down option command P R etc but nothing yet has worked. Don't have installation disk as MacBook is 9 years old so must've thrown disk out years ago.

have a folder with a question mark on startup? What do I do?
Info:
iMac, Mac OSX (10.2.x) , Folder with question mark at start
So, I was on windows, using bootcamp, and I was creating partitions on a pen drive with it, and then it asks me that it needs to restart to apply changes.
But then, while restarting, a blue screen occurred (**** windows).... And I forced the shutdown pressing the power key.
Then, I simply turned the MacBook on, trying to boot on my snow leopard and I got a flashing folder with a question mark on it. Now I can't access any partitions on it, if I press option key on startup I get a blank window!
I tried to reset PRAM, repair the MacOs partition using the snow leopard DVD (it shows up fine, along with windows partition and EFI partition), and I still don't get my startup disk showing up...
