Intel Mac :: No Video On Boot
Jun 22, 2012
Odd problem that just started with my 2008-ish iMac. Probably not related, but iTunes did it's typical thing of hard freezing my entire system. I hard rebooted my iMac, and it rebooted with no video. It chimed, but the screen remained black. I searched for the problem and found an old Apple article that suggested resetting the PRAM. Not really believing it would work, I tried it anyway and, still no video.
I let it boot for what I believed was a reasonable amount of time to get to the log in screen. Then I hit the F-buttons for volume and received the chirp letting me know that I was changing the volume. I hit the F-buttons for brightness, but did not get anything from the screen. I was working, so I shut it down again, let it sit, and started it up later. Video! It started up just fine. I know it probably needs to go to the Apple Store, but I am not going to be able to get down there for a day or two.
Info:iMac (24-inch Early 2008), Mac OS X (10.7.4) Reboot...no video.

My mid 2010 iMac i7 will not boot past the apple logo? I'm running 10.7.3. I have tried restoring from TM backup from recovery mode (worked the last time this happened) however upon completion it returns to the recovery screen? I made a disk of Lion when I downloaded the first time (followed same instructions sourced from numerous websites) which does not seem to work when i set to start up from this disk, just gets to the grey screen and flicks between the apple logo, a folder icon with a question mark and the circle with line through? Now I can't eject the disk either, a message appears that system can't eject and to make sure all applications are closed? Not sure how to go about closing these applications without being able to start the system? When I tried booting from the Macintosh HD I got a message that the boot cache partition was faulty? I have ran disk permissions etc all ok. Â

MacBook Pro 17" boot correctly but no video. I get the start-up sound and can hear the fan running. I have already tried the reset SMC and PRAM options. Still no video, I have even attempted to connect another video monitor, but nothing.

So the other day I came home to find my powermac g5 frozen with the fans going crazy. After a hard reset the machine would no longer boot any further than the grey apple (kernel) stage. After pulling the video card the machine would boot up and I could log in using remote desktop from my laptop.
The machine ran that way for a couple of days until I got a new video card. When I put the new video card in the machine would not boot again.(The new card is exactly the same one as the old one)(ATI Radeon X800 XT mac edition).
After pulling the card the machine still wouldn't boot (exact same behavior as with the card) until I let it sit unplugged for 20 minutes or so. Also when it's not booting I can see that a little red light comes on on the logic board behind the cpu's.
Anyways I'm thinking it may be a power supply issue but if any experts wanna help me out with some advice I'd be very grateful.....
Continued
Well Today I tried using a pci video card from a g5 xserve and it exhibited the same behavior so now I know it's not the agp slot.
When it has the cards in it won't do anything except make the bong and the fans come on and then after a minute or so a red light comes on behind the processor and the fans start revving up super loud.
At first it would display up till the grey apple stage of the boot sequence and then hang. Now the display does not come on at all. When it is doing this the machine will not respond to any keystrokes etc.
When I pull the cards out all is normal and I can boot into target disk ,safe boot, whatever except I need to connect to it via remote desktop to see anything. Like this the machine is stable and will run normally. I also tried disconnecting the optical drive and hard drives and swapping the ram to see if that helped but it didn't. Of course I have reset Pram and the pmu also. Is the logic board toast? I can't run any hardware test or asd's with no video to see if there are any errors...

My mini "starts" without chime when I press the power button on the back. The fan starts, the light in front goes on and I hear some clicks which could be the hard drive. The screen remains black (no signal) and the mini does not respond to the USB keyboard power button. It does not start when pressing it and will not power down if I press it for any length of time when it is on. Pressing the power button on the back for some time shuts it down.Â

I think my video card died about a month ago and I've been trying out some cards with no success. Here is a previous thread I made about it:
[URL]
I just got the second card I'm trying today: ATI X800 XT AGP, and my computer will just sit at the grey apple screen with no wheel spinning. I'm assuming this is a driver issue (or something much worse)! Since my computer will not boot, I have no idea how to update the drivers for this card.

I just updated boot camp and when restarting teh entire windows went 8 bit. In the monitor conrol panel the computer recognizes I have an nvidia 8600N video card but when changing the resolution it won't take it. I press apply and nothing, it goes back to 640 x 480 and 256 colors.
I started the computer switching to the previous working system and I get the same result.

i have 4 gb of ram, and would like to increase the shared video memory in windows 7, that i am using via boot camp. i know you can do it using the bios, but because there is no bios, is there any program that emulates the bios for boot camp, or another solution to do this?
then, why does windows 7 read just 3 gb of ram, when i have 4?

some reason my Macbook Pro 15' inch won't start up. It's stuck at the blue loading screen after the gray Apple. The screen switches from two blue colors every 5 seconds or so along with a loading symbol. Sometimes I can see my mouse and use it, but that's all what is happening. The last thing I did was installing the newest video driver on my Boot Camp. (Windows 7 - 32bit and Leopard 10.5 for mac)
I can still start up Windows 7 without a problem on Boot Camp, so it doesn't seems a hardware issue. I already tried some stuff found on the internet, but I can't start up 10.5 in normal or safe mode.

Normally I build my own machines, but this time around I needed final cut for some projects so I went all out and bought a nice mac pro about a year ago to use primarily as a gaming machine, with final-cut-pro video editing on the side. I've only done a couple FCP edits on the machine and as a result, have mostly used the PC side of things (via bootcamp) and play a game a few times a week on average (Team fortress 2 and FFXI etc). It's run beautifully, easily the best purchase I've ever made.Today is the first day I've had any serious issue with the machine. Having grown up building gaming computers, I am familiar with the corruption (most notably the 'green' corruption that stands out) associated with video cards. Last night I popped on a game called Dragonica that my fiance is into, she needed a hand with some boss thing, so even though I'm not super into it I hopped on. Before I knew it, the screen flickered green-colored-corruption for a second, then locked up. I restarted, thinking its probably a fluke, and before I could get all the way back in, it did it again. I turned off the machine and went to bed (had work in the morning).

Being a history enthusiast of that era, I've been waiting for Empire: Total War to come out for quite a while. I'm also a bit of an enthusiast as well and would really like to get a new iMac. I'm just wondering if anyone out there is playing E:TW on an iMac with Boot Camp and how well it's been working. Any particular video card recommended over the others?

OS X 10.4.3 IMAC Intel Core Duo. I backed up my HD on an external drive so I could upgrade to Snow Leopard. I wanted to test that I could boot from the external drive and selected it as my start up drive. When I did a restart I got the Apple and the turning gear and then suddenly a black screen with this on it:
"May 28 22:23:11 Launched:com.apple.nibindd:respawning too quickly throttling, exited system abnormally bad system call too many failures in succession I have no name!"
I tried several dozen times with no luck. I think when I made the copy of my HD on the external HD I may have neglected to make it "bootable" (moving too quickly). My internal CDROM is busted so I use an external CDROM. I can't boot from it at all with the proper start up buttons pushed. It keeps trying to boot from the external drive. If I turn the external drive off and try to boot from the external CD I just get the grey file with the ? in the middle of it.
I tried using another external HD I have with OS 10.4 on it, but it won't recognize it either with fan, alt, shift, delete pressed at start up. My internal drive (a Seagate 2 tarabite drive) works great, but how do I reset it as the start up drive when I'm stuck with this black screen. One more thing, when I try to reset PRAM I don't get a second gong.

I burned numerous dvd's with my old Toshiba laptop for all of my videos and such with Windows XP. Now after my Toshiba crapped out and I switched to a Mac I was wondering why when I put the DVD into the laptop (MacBook Pro Intel processor) why I can only see the name of the dvd and not the contents. I hope someone can help me since I hate having to boot up Windows in Parallels and then play using Windows or drag it to my mac partition since this takes time and I just really hate having to see Windows load on my Mac. Anyones help is greatly appreciated.

I think i'm going to be investing in a SSD Boot drive for my 09 2.93-Octo MP. Have a few questions regarding the size needed for boot, and brand! Before I begin, I have my DL/User files on another drive already and I'm still right around 80GB in Apps, but I do have a lot of fonts and other little files Floating around that I'm sure could be moved to another drive. So
A. What size is common for boot drives SSD?
B. I'm reading better speeds in the OCZ Vertex than the Intel X25M, which drive do you trust?
Is there a drive out there with a 64m Chip thats 80g? Or do i need 120(128)to get the good chip. Also who is a good online or retail supplier for these drives? OWC?

i have an old iMac8,1 running 10.5. i've been trying to run other OSes off the bootcamp partition, but i can't get it to boot off any bootable media. so far i've tried Windows XP DVDs, Ubuntu DVDs, bootable live CDs on USB drives, and even 'dd'ing a live cd to the bootcamp partition. all of these result in the same outcome: a blinking cursor on a black screen. i thought it was just slow, so i left it for a whole day waiting a couple of times, after all that it was still the same blinking cursorÂ
i also tried rEFIt, which works fine, but apparently it doesn't make a difference. both the rEFIt and the original mac bootloader won't boot anything but what's on the hard drive. oddly enough, if i boot off something that's not bootable, i do get an error saying no system found, so at least that is workingÂ
