Intel Mac :: Most Common Reason For IMac To Slow Down?
Feb 9, 2012
I am running an iMac on OS X 10.6.8 with 2.16GHz intel core 2 Duo. Recently I have seen the computer slow down with spinning wheels all the time and the sound of the hard drive turning over.

We're a start up with 6 people using Macs. We don't have enough money to get an XServe so we've started up with Network Area Storage for our main filesCan someone point in the direction of how we can have a common diary and common address book available to all our team.

The 27 models I have seen on display seem to generate an awful amount of heat radiating from the screen. Is this common?
Is the screen overly big for home office use in terms of heat, screen resolution/print readability or overall usability if one sits fairly close to the monitor?

I don't mean to start a new Thread but I think this one could really pinpoint the problem if we could get some good feedback on this. What is the Common Denominator (besides having the HD4850 option) that could be causing the lockups that some people are having.
Examples Is everyone who is experiencing lockups :
1.) Installed Boot Camp and using Windows with this HD4850 option?
2.) Do you use Safari exclusively and not FireFox?
3.) Does it happen only when Surfing ?
4.) Does it happen only when playing a certain game like WOW?
5.) Does it happen only after you been using the iMac for a few hours?
so on. . .
See my point? Write down or make yourself notes to as what you were doing exactly when it locked up? Reply to this Thread and lets figure this out. It will be must easier if everyone could put their situation in this Thread and maybe we can get to the bottom of this.

Mail is often very slow to get mail on my Imac. Much faster on phone. Sometimes I have to take it on and off line to get it to new mail. At times I have had to force quit the mail program and restart. Additionally, I often have to move the same mail several times to get it filed where I want. Are there fixes or is it time to move to another email client? I have used mac mail for many years and have thousands of emails filed.

This is really getting old. Now I want to return the $4000 computer and go back to Microsoft. I've seen discussions dating back to 2007 about Macbooks and iMacs automatically muting themselves with no solution. APPLE FIX THIS NOW. Enough of this problem. Write your OS so that it is IMPOSSIBLE for the iMac to mute itself
Now, before I return this hunk of junk, can you please tell me how to STOP this iMac from muting itself? (In system preferences/sound/output, the Mute box is checked and GRAYED OUT so that it cannot be changed by the ADMINISTRATOR (why on earth would you program it to do that?).

My iMac ( late 2012, 27", 3.4 GHz i7, 16 GB RAM, 3TB Fusion Drive, OS X 10.10.1 ) has taken to randomly restarting for no reason that I can find. It seems to be mostly when I am not actually doing anything, but, as I say, it's random. It did it five times in about half an hour the other day, then it didn't do it for a day or so, but it just did it again, which prompted me to ask. I have run Tech Tool Pro 7, and everything has passed. I have repaired permissions ( there were lots ). What next?

I have an iMac and it is about 4 years old. For some reason it is very slow starting up, takes about 90 seconds. Opening even a normal app like Firefox takes sometimes 2 minutes.Â
I had the harddrive replaced as part of one of the recall programmes form Apple as the OEM drive was malfunctioning, that made it slightly better, but soon after the old poor performance was back.Â

I have an iMac 2011. Processor: 2.7GHz Intel Core i5/ Memory 4GB
OS X Yosemite, version 10.10.1Â
After I change my OS from Mavericks to Yosemite, moving files between folders is very slow.
For example, if I move one jpg file in Desktop to Pictures folder (or just any other folders like Trash), it takes about 3 seconds.Â
When I was still using Mavericks, it made that Ding sound and transferred files right away. However, now, although it makes the Ding sound right away, the file is still there for 3 seconds.Â
I tried to clean up my mac using many apps, but they never fixed this problem.
I've also tried what I saw on this one thread. OS X File Transfers Very Slow
Go->Connect to Server then type "cifs://server-address" but it says there is a problem and did nothing. (maybe different issue)Â

Last week I got a malware attack from opening up a Facebook message. This caused my iMac to run very slow and to crash all the time. I ran the latest security update which found and removed the malware itself. But still my iMac is running very slow and crashing when doing two jobs at once. Â
Any reason as to why?Is it still infected? or has the malware corrupted my hd or memory?Â

recently my Mac is really slow, slow on startup(took around 1-2hours), and slow on task(more than 5 minutes delayed time on every single task), I don't know what happened to it,
My Mac specs: Â
1.Mid-2010 27 inch iMac,
2.Original 4g Ram upgraded to 12g
3.1TB HD has got more than 400gb free space.
4.i3 processor
5.Using latest Lion(I think it's 10.7.3)Â
Problems: Â
1.Startup tooooooooo slow, take more than 1 hour
2.Extreamly slow on tasks. Without any apps opened, every single click, it turned into the 'colorful fan', for instance, open finder, it took more than five mins, and it's not only the finder, it's EVERYTHING!!!!Â
What I have done so far:Â
1.I have reduced the login items
2.I have changed the password login to the automatic login
3.I have tried verify disk permission, verify disk, repair disk permission and repair disk
4.Unplug all unnecessary items(monitor, external drive etc.)
5.Run couple of time of 'clean my Mac', get rid of all the trash.
6.Cleaned the cacheÂ
Due to the ridiculous, frustrating startup, that's all I could do, however, none of them worked.
Now I am using recovery HD to reinstall Lion from a disc, but I don't know if it'll work or not.Â
I don't have another Mac, I don't have backups(don't want to lose my data),that's my situation.

Maybe I expect too much, or need to learn about some networking or other tweaks to help things along, but I feel like my Mac Pro has disappointing performance.
I've got an Early 2008 Mac Pro, dual quad core Intel Xeon 2.8 GHz processors, 12 GB of memory, 1.6 GHz bus, gigabit ethernet to a 25Mbps/25Mbps fiber (Fios) connection, have run namebench to find the fastest name servers possible, and I still feel like my Mac Pro is slow. Just popped in a 500GB Momentus XT Hybrid Drive to replace the 78Mbs 320GB drive that came stock to help things along. Helped speed boot times and common app load times a lot, but after things are loaded, not much is notably faster.
OK, so I let Firefox get out of hand sometimes and I have 100+ open tabs, 4 open browsers (and sometimes 2 or 3 versions of Firefox running different profiles) -- Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari -- ssh tunnels and sessions galore, Evernote, Time Machine, and VMware running some video monitoring software (Dog Poop Cam -- gonna catch whomever is letting their dog crap in my yard).
Even shutting software hogs down and then trying to play Team Fortress 2, granted at 1920x1200 pushing to limits of the ATI Radeon HD 2600, things are still feeling slow. TF2 in Windows seems much faster and more responsive on the same hardware -- maybe that's just the fault of Steam or Apple's lack of up-to-date drivers, but frustrating nonetheless.
Load average is usually 0.5 to 1.0, sometimes reaching 2.0 (full load would be 8.0), memory usage is at 50-60%, and disk activity is reasonable. What is wrong? What can I tweak to improve things? Are my expectations simply too high?

I read on another forum that some people seem to do a clean install of Mac OS on their machines every year or so, whether they need it or not. I'd never heard of this before and thought that I'd ask here to see if this is common practice?

Woke my C2D MBP from sleep to find a horrendous blue tint to the screen, googled it and found it is a fairly common problem but none of the solutions that seemed to work for everyone have worked for me. Tried the terminal command, tried turning a screensaver on and then off, tried ctrl-cmd-eject to restart the screen - nada.

At times I would like to gather all files of a certain extension (aif or jpg or xlsx or¦) in one location. By adding the extension parameter to the finder's FIND command, I can easily see them all, but that's only the first half. How do I now move, or copy them all into a single folder, say, on the desktop?
