my mac's gone very slow?
Info:iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.6)
recently my Mac is really slow, slow on startup(took around 1-2hours), and slow on task(more than 5 minutes delayed time on every single task), I don't know what happened to it,
My Mac specs: Â
1.Mid-2010 27 inch iMac,
2.Original 4g Ram upgraded to 12g
3.1TB HD has got more than 400gb free space.
4.i3 processor
5.Using latest Lion(I think it's 10.7.3)Â
Problems: Â
1.Startup tooooooooo slow, take more than 1 hour
2.Extreamly slow on tasks. Without any apps opened, every single click, it turned into the 'colorful fan', for instance, open finder, it took more than five mins, and it's not only the finder, it's EVERYTHING!!!!Â
What I have done so far:Â
1.I have reduced the login items
2.I have changed the password login to the automatic login
3.I have tried verify disk permission, verify disk, repair disk permission and repair disk
4.Unplug all unnecessary items(monitor, external drive etc.)
5.Run couple of time of 'clean my Mac', get rid of all the trash.
6.Cleaned the cacheÂ
Due to the ridiculous, frustrating startup, that's all I could do, however, none of them worked.
Now I am using recovery HD to reinstall Lion from a disc, but I don't know if it'll work or not.Â
I don't have another Mac, I don't have backups(don't want to lose my data),that's my situation.

My iMac has became very slow.

Recently I decided to teach myself 3D modeling and I installed the free version of Sketchup * on my new iMac (last summer) running )SX Lion and with 8GB RAM. But I get so annoyed when I try to do something as simple as intersecting faces and then WHAM it's like I hit a wall and the spinning beachball of death appears. Sometimes it only lasts for a few minutes, but other times it can run for half an hour with no progress and I force quit out of frustration and try again.Â
It did this when I had the original 4GB RAM and upgrading to 8GB hasn't made any noticeable difference. And so I doubt upgrading yet again to 16GB would accomplish anything since it doesn't seem to be a RAM issue.Â
I understand Windows users don't have this issue or Apple users running Leopard or Snow Leopard. I also understand this is being worked on and not everyone experiences this, but in the interim it's really frustrating. I've made certain I don't have any other programs running or Sketchup panes open and I try to keep things simple by selecting only the caes I'm trying to intersect together, but it's still to no avail.Â

i have a 2010 imac and it is very slow on wifi,i have done a side by side test with my macbook pro in the same room, the mbp gives me 45mb download speed while the imac gives 16mb . the only way i can get it faster is to unplug it from the mains,it will then be similar to the mbp,but will slowly get worse again over a few hours. i have tried all the solutions on the forums, the os is up to date.

I have noticed that my MAC is really taking a long time to load programs & on-line content. Is there a way to clean up whats on here? I remember with the old PC you could defrag and do a disk clean up? Is there such a thing with my IMAC? It is 4 years old & I am running the latest software versions.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have recently done an update and had to re boot my iMac only to find its slower than windows at re booting. I have tried resetting the PRAM and tried cmd-r then going through disk utilities to repair disk, once this was finished it said the disk appears to be ok. It's still just sat there at the grey screen with the apple logo and the loading symbol.Â

I have attached my computer details below. Compared to the new probook my imac is quite slow. I do professional photography and I have two issues. One is probably ISP related. Uplloading a folder of high res. jpegs from the D7000 takes for ever. Am I right in presuming this to be an ISP problem? Is there a solution? The other issue is the slow response when using A3 - even a 100% zoom takes several second to focus.
Is this a processor speed issue? If so, can I increase the speed? Â

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy computer is running very slow. Beach ball all the time. I have about 35mb hard drive free space and 4 MB RAM. I monitor with Activity Monitor. Everytime I open a program, like Safari, Adobe, Activity Monitor shows they use up to 99% CPU. It goes downafter a little while to a small perecntage, until I try to do something with them. Then many times, it will jump back up to high %CPU and give me the beachball and run very slow. This is a new thing. Does anyone know what may be the problem with my computer?

My imac has been working fine for the 5 years I had it.As of last week my mac had been running great. When I open up an app is opens right up. When I jump on Safari it opened right up. Sometimes I keep my imac overnight but let it stay on sleep on mode. Nevertheless, after 3 days of not using it when I cut it on everything started working slow. Apps takes 2 to 3 minutes to load. Safari takes for ever to load and have broken images on the site. I havent used Time Machine since the last week April, but when I left my mac on overnight (just yesterday) to update it, it was stuck on "preparing to back up". That's over 10 hours of preparing, and unable to back up. So bottomline, something has gone wrong and I dont know where to start.  Â
I read on a blog to repair disk to see if that fix the problem. In disk utility when I highlighted the 500 GB hard drive the only 2 option was highlighted, verify disk and repair disk. When I press repair disk, it checked fast with no issues. When I highlight the Macintosh HD which is under the 500GB hard drive, verify disk permssion and repair permission were highlighted. I chose repair permissions and its saying that it will take 1 day and 9 hours to repair. After staring at for almost an hour the progress bar hasn't really moved. Â

My 2008 iMac started running very slowly yesterday, taking ages to start up and showing the spinning wheel on the desktop for ages making it impossible to do anything. It particularly doesn't like running iTunes or Spotify and got worse when I plugged my iPod in. Another thing I can think of is I downloaded an album from iTunes yesterday and this seemed to coincide with it having a breakdown. Chrome is also running slow and I get frequent unresponsive script messages.
I'm running OS X 10.5.8 and have upgraded to iTunes 10.6.1. I recently installed the Flashback removal software.

View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday morning during working on the mac, the system started to become extremely slow till the point that even the mouse didn't respond any longer and I only got the spinning ball showing. No webpages opened up any longer and closing the program I was working in (Sibelius 7), took a very long time. Â
I did a system clean with Onyx (for Lion), did a virus and trojan check and followed the advice on the Viruses page in this forum on checking the firewall. It wx After that everything seemed to be OK and the system was fast again. Now after about 1 hour working, again it styartys to show the same symtoms, getting slower and having the spinning ball showing up more ad more.Â
