Applications :: Convert SWF Files To MP3 - Free Audio Extraction Or Video / Audio Converter Exist?

May 29, 2010

I want to convert some video files (specifically swf in this case) to audio files so I can listen on my iPod. I looked everywhere and can't find some free software that does that. There are tons that have trial periods with lots of limitations (like it won't convert anything larger than a 5k size file) so I don't want those because I won't know if the thing works well unless I pay for it. I'm not opposed to paying for a converter IF I know it works awesome on a Mac.

Hardware :: Looking For A ESATA To Firewire Converter?

Nov 8, 2009

I am buying an external Blu-Ray drive and have been looking at one by OWC that has USB 2.0, Firewire 400, 800, and eSATA connectors. I've really become interested in a drive that is made by Buffalo Technologies and has a USB 2.0 and eSATA connector. The issues are as follows:

-Will USB 2.0 handle the bandwith well or do I really need something such as Firewire or eSATA?

-Most of all, is there an adapter to convert an eSATA connector such as on the Blu-Ray drive to a Firewire connector that I could plug in the front of my Mac Pro?

Hardware :: Need Info On Orange Micro SCSI-Firewire Converter?

Jan 25, 2009

I need a bit of info on a device I found in a box of surplus stock... it's an Orange Micro SCSI to Firewire (IEEE1394) model 70HTL00010 - Standard 25-pin SCSI female connector to standard Firewire 6-pin female connector.

I discovered that Orange Micro went belly up a few years ago, and I don't have the instruction manual for the device. There seems to be very little concrete info on the web about that device. What I specifically need to know is the voltage of the power adapter (missing) of this device. From what I gathered, it can run without the adapter, but some SCSI devices will require it...

Any link to a PDF file or just the voltage of the adapter would be very helpful! I was thinking of trying to run a nice SCSI slide scanner through the Firewire port of my G5 with that converter.

Intel Mac :: Can Two Address Books Exist On It

Apr 20, 2012

I use my iMac for keeping tabs on a list of recuring events throughout the years as well as over the years. The events generally follow in particular months each year and have new attendees as well as returning participants from previously held events who continue to attend the events.

I have kept records in Word for Mac, on Pages & Numbers, but nothing works best like Address Book.  I have several hundred participants that I would like to reorganize into a central location and find that Address Book might be best suited for the task.  The problem is that I would like to keep separate these names and dates from my personal/business Address Book if at all possible.

"Can two Address Books exist on the iMac, each with its own intended purpose?  Namely, Address Book 1 (Personal) and Address Book 2 (Events)?

Intel Mac :: Preview Error Message <doc> "can Not Be Saved Because It Does Not Exist"

May 10, 2012

I have had a long standing problem with Preview. I know it is odd but around closing time every day, two of my computers both running 10.6.8 get error message when trying to save a new document. The document will be open on my screen and when I go to save it I get the error message that the file can not be saved because it does not exist. Some background that may be relevent:

The documents that I create all day long (for at least 6 years) are output from a 4D database. I generate a report from the db and it opens in Preview as a PDF file. All day long I have no issues with creating and saving these docs. Then around 4-4:30 when many people are getting ready to leave two of our computers (one iMac 3.06GHz Intel Core i3 and an older macMini) have this problem. All you have to do to fix it is quit Preview and regen the doc. Unfortunately we often lose a lot of work because of it. I've tried anticipating when it will happen and restart Preview before creating the new doc but that only works occasionally.

I suspect that it has something to do with people logging out (I am usually the last to leave) and perhaps some shared application is effected. Everyone does have their own copy of Preview and we all use separate 4D clients. I have searched the internet many times. I have found some similar problems that people have had with this error but not related to my own. Unfortunately both Preview and "the file can not be saved because it does not exist" are very general terms that bring up all kinds of unrelated things.

I was going to try to delete the Preview Prefs file and start again but I can not find a plist for preview or any other file that is clearly the prefs. Searched the internet for that too but did not find it.

Intel Mac :: FireWire Versus USB 3.0?

Mar 20, 2012

People have told me that FireWire 800 is faster than USB 3.0, and I believe them based on my low trust for USB's promised speeds (USB 2.0 claims to be faster than FW400, but that is a complete lie). Of course, I know that USB 3.0 has a faster promised speed than FireWire 800. I like how FireWire is truly peer-to-peer, allowing for faster data transfers, and I'm wondering if something like USB can actually beat that. Has anyone tried a test comparing USB 3.0 to FireWire 800? I heard that there are USB 3.0 adapters for Mac Pros. Or maybe someone has a non-Mac with FW800. I want to know just how fast USB 3.0 is compared to my long-time favorite FireWire.

MacBook Pro :: 15 Firewire Unable To List Firewire Devices And Takes 5-6 Start Up?

Feb 16, 2009

I currently have my second MBP that I got from Macmall and both in a matter of two weeks have had similar issues. The first I managed to get returned and replaced, that is a seperate and complicated story in and of itself. This particular issue started with a boot up sequence that was taking about 5-6 mins. After going through the drill with Applecare thought I could restore using Time Machine. That's when I found out that the FW400 port no longer worked to power my Oyen Digital 250G FW drive. Any thoughts as to what might be the problem? This is my second MBP and Oyen Digital FW drive. I had them both replaced!

Intel Mac :: FireWire Vs USB At Hibernate Mode

Feb 25, 2012

Well I have the following task/issue. I have iMac and installed SamrtSleep 3rd party utility. It put my IMac in hibernate mode once system goes sleep. I have made for UPS setup so when power is off iMac will hibernate. The problem is I have several external hard drives - FireWire and USB. Anytime I wakeup after hibernate the USB drives is unplugged and plugged again (software mode) and it breaks everything (if any) what was busy with this external drive and Not Properly Ejected warning appear. For example I have image file on external USB mounted before sleep. After wakeup it's unmounted like if I will just switch hard disk off while running. However my FireWire works just fine the same way like internal hard drive. I have virtual machine  image file on FireWire disk. I open and run it. Than go to hibernate and wakeup. The system stays same place where it was before sleep. Noting was unmounted/unplugged. I was able to continue work on Mac OS as well as in same place in virtual machine. First I was looking for help here and All Over The Google but all issues is around how to unmount all external drives before sleep. But I don't need to unmount them I need hibernate them together with all system. Also when wakeup my virtual machine notice me where to plug many USB devices (it always ask when new one is connected). It means when Mac OS wakeup from hibernate it "break" all USB connections however nothing happens with FireWire. My question so far if its possible to put USB in some mode when it will not "break" on wakeup? Or maybe any other solution to hibernate USB disks.

Intel Mac :: Its Not Seeing Firewire Startup Disk

Jun 17, 2012

Ive made an OS bootable super duper backup of my white intel imac (late 2006) 10.6.8 onto a WD My Book Studio 2TB (GUID partioned)  and although the drive appears to be running fine from the OS its not being seen as a startup drive when connected via usb or firewire (with an 800 to 400 adapter) after holding down the option key at startup. I tested the startup drive capability on a newer imac running 10.7.4 and it shows up as a viable startup drive when holding option at boot up and plugged in via firewire.

why the older imac might not be picking up the drive at bootup with option key pressed?

Intel Mac :: Can't Capture Video From DV Camera Via Firewire?

May 31, 2012

I'm tryin to transfer video from my Sony DV camera to my iMac, but neither iMovie not Adobe Premiere cannot recognise the device.  They both automatically select my iSight camera as the one and only video source.

When I check the Firewire status in System Profiler I get the message: "Unable to list FireWire devices".

I have tired restarting the software, unplugging the camera, unplugging the firewire cable, restarting my Mac but still no result.

I spent a considerable amount of time Googling for solutions but have not come up with anything that helped.  I have also tried unplugging all other USB devices, restarting the machine, trying again, but still the same issue.

The weird thing is that about a year ago I managed to capture video just fine from the camera into Premiere without any problems.

The only thing that is different now, is that I have Windoes XP installed on my Mac as well. Could this be an issue, with XP "stealing" my firewire connection in some manner?  I'm not sure how this would be possible, but I suppose it could be...

My iMac is a 21.5" with an Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz processor.  4GB DDR3 Ram and Mac OS X 10.6.8

iMovie is version 8.0.6 and Premiere is CS4. As I said, I had managed to capture video using the same equpiment about a year ago and the only difference now is that I also have a partition on my Mac with Windows XP (Service pack 3) on it.

Of course, the cable itself could be faulty, but since it hasn't been used in over a year, I doubt that's the issue. I still wanna try anything else, before I buy a new cable.

Intel Mac :: Firewire Cable For Target Disk Mode?

Feb 18, 2012

I'm using a Late 2010 27" i5 iMac and a Late 2009 15" MacBook Pro. I'm going to reformat and reinstall the iMac this weekend but need to grab all my Music/Documents (you know the drill) from it. Last time I did this, I did it over a 100mbps network, needless to say it was absolutely horribly slow. So, today I'm going to pick up a cheap-ish firewire cable and target my laptop as a disk using target disk mode.

Which type of Firewire cable do I need to buy? It's either a 4-pin or 6-pin choice, no 9-pins available at the shop I intend to visit. I have no idea what the difference is between them - hardware is definitely not my game. Both ports look like this (taken from Apple's docs, Firewire 800):
