Mar 28, 2012Just purchased my first iMac last week and yesterday I noticed a clicking sound when I turn it on. Is this normal?

Mar 16, 2012When I turn on my 17" iMac I hear a loud clicking noise. The noise repeats every few minutes and finally a folder icon appears with a question mark in it. Could my hard drive be failing?

Sep 6, 2010I may have found a solution for all the people out there who upgraded their hd's to a 7200rpm and have the clicking noise. Apple released a firmware update for the 7200rpm drives that shipped with the uMBP. You can get the file from here.I don't know if this will fix only the hd's shipped with the MBP or any 7200rpm drive but its worth a try.PS: Also i ask that anyone who tries this please report back on your results.

Nov 17, 2008There seems to be an occasional clicking noise coming from the hard drive on my new alumn macbook . is that normal? anyone experiencing the same? diskutility says nothing is wrong with it and it seems to be functioning fine so far.

I replaced the hard drive, but that didn't help. The sound appears to be coming from the rear of the computer, near the top. (where the power cord plugs in).

Jan 22, 2009Not sure from where in my macbook it's coming, but it started recently. The only thing that changed recently is that i relocated it to a different city, but i don't see why that would cause this. Clicking isn't really the right word to describe the noise...it's like a sweeping click. "Shtock." And it gets louder if i increase the volume on my computer, but it's definitely not coming from any application. And it usually goes off every minute, but sometimes there are breaks of two minutes or so.

Feb 22, 2009I have (had) a 24" iMac, which I purchased on Christmas Eve this past year. I love it, but it had a tendency to make all sorts of nasty noises. This was mostly a clicking that the HDD made for about 5 minutes on startup. I ended up backing up my iMac and the shop where I bought it exchanged it for a new one without question, so it's no longer an issue for me. But I've read that a clicking HDD is not uncommon on the Mac and I was wondering if anyone can tell me if it's really that serious an issue? The store employees where I bought it all said that it was an impending HDD failure, although I've heard that isn't always the case. Any thoughts on this?

Jun 19, 2009So I turned on my Macbook Pro today and this clicking noise is coming from the rightmost fan hole. I am really nervous that it is a serious issue as I use my Macbook for probably 15 hours a day for all sorts of artistic ventures.
After exploring, I've discovered with I use it on certain angles, the clicking stops, or increases/decreases in noisiness
Anybody have experience with this? Is there a way to clean it of the issue?
I haven't had any problems with my system before, and the computer itself is operating perfectly

I thought it might be the HDD motion sensor but since its coming from the left hand side it's concerning me slightly.

Aug 14, 2010Got an original Intel Core Duo iMac. Last few days I've had trouble starting up the computer. When I hit the power button, I hear a weird clicking noise for a few seconds, then it sounds like the HD is powering down and then powering back up and the clicking noise again. If this goes on for ~30 seconds, a flashing folder with a ? shows up where the Apple logo should be. If that happens, I've powered it down and tried turning it on again. Seems to work, but this has me freaked out.
Does this sound like the HD is dying? Also recently, my Superdrive is spitting back every blank DVD I put in there.
MacBook Pro :: Dropped It And Now There Is A Clicking Noise?
Jun 7, 2012Yesterday my MBP was accidentally dropped on the ground. It landed on the front left side, making a small dent (right beside the power light button). As far as I can tell, the computer seems to be functioning properly, except now there are 2 main issues:
1) The shell is slightly bent so that the computer doesn't sit straight (and wobbles).
2) There is a small, randomly occurring metal clicking sound coming from the computer; it's very irritating. I can't be sure, but it seems to be coming from the right side.
what is causing the clicking sound, and if it can be fixed? This computer is only 2 months old and is still under warranty; do you think the warranty would cover this sort of damage given the accidental nature of it?

Aug 30, 2010I just bought a brand new MacBook Pro about 2 weeks ago. I'd say about a week ago I notice a clicking noise when I pick up the macbook or move it at all coming from the hard drive.
I finally took to the internet to find out what was going on, and got mixed results. Some said that it was normal for a Macbook Pro and that it was securing the hard drive so it didn't break while I moved it, and a vast majority said that the hard drive's failure was imminent. So what is it?

Nov 5, 2010My MacBook Pro 15inch makes a hollow sounding click/ping noise when I move along the track pad. It's NOT the motion sensor, that noise is more defined and pinpointed. This noise is random, sometimes occurs non-stop for an hour or two at a time every time I move the mouse, but usually occurs at random. Sometimes it also occurs when i have my computer on my lap or tilted and move it from side to side. But again, it is not the normal motion sensor noise.
I'm on my third MacBook Pro in less than 30 days. My first one corrupted all my files and my second one pinged like this one. I just need confirmation that this is actually OK and I will get a good MacBook and the money will be well spent. I think most of my issues stem from the fact that I'm new to Mac and just don't know what is normal.

Aug 28, 2007My Macbook had a wierd nosie coming from the fan. Its sounded like a ticking noise and got more frequent as the fan speed increased.
Its only a week old, but never notice it before, properly because I use it infront of the TV.
However, I have use a can of compressed air and blasted the rear ven, which seems to solved the problem. I have loaded the machine upto 4500 rpm and still no ticking noise.
PowerPC :: Horrible Clicking Noise In IMac G5?
Mar 10, 2008Yeah, so this morning I woke up and awoke my iMac from sleep only to have it make a horrible clicking noise multiple times and stay frozen on the desktop screen. I restarted it and made it spit out my Lord of the Rings DVD, held down the option key and brought it to the boot menu. Started it up from there and it is running fine, no clicking.
Should I be concerned about that horrible click?
Mac Pro :: Clicking Noise During Sleep When External HDD Connected?
Mar 15, 2008So I just got my Mac Pro a few days ago... and actually didn't get it setup until tonight (long story), but anyways I've noticed something rather odd.
If I have my external HDD connected to my Mac Pro it makes a clicking noise when it goes into Sleep Mode or even when I shut it down. It's kind of like "click, click" pause "click, click" and this repeats until I wake it from sleep. The HDD is connected by FireWire 400 and everything is fine when the computer is awake, and when I disconnect the HDD and put the computer to sleep everything is fine.
Anyone have any idea what's going on here? The sound seems to be coming from the top portion of the machine.
MacBook :: Random Clicking Noise From Superdrive / How To Fix It
Oct 28, 2008I've had my unibody MacBook 2.4ghz for a few days, and I've been hearing a strange clicking noise coming from the superdrive. At first I thought it was the hard drive, it almost sounds like a seeking head, but upon closer inspection, the sound is definitely coming from the optical drive.
This is happening without a disc in the drive, and seems to make the noise every 15-20 seconds. It's not that loud, but loud enough to drive me crazy in a quiet environment.
I have Win XP installed on bootcamp, so I logged into windows to see if the clicking was present in a different OS (to rule out a driver issue in OSX). The issue is exactly the same in windows.
The drive does work, but I'm worried there might be something wrong with it that will cause a premature death.
MacBook Air :: Rev. B Screen Makes Clicking Noise - How To Fix It
Jan 13, 2009- When I clean the screen with the included cloth or any cleaning cloth, the screen makes a clicking noise. As if it's like not flushed against the bezel. This only happens on the left part of the screen from, top to bottom. If I wipe in the center, no problem at all. I was wondering if anyone of you is experiencing the same problem? Btw, I also have the lines, but its very faint and I don't notice it as much as the my 3rd replacement Air, which I exchanged for this one. The Apple Store said that if I had any more line problems with this one, they won't replace it anymore and they would just try and replace the screen. I don't know if my problem is a common one and worth it to send my computer out to get its screen replaced, and who knows, maybe the replacement screen might have the lines and that's why I'm worried about getting the screen replaced, in addition to being out of my laptop for a couple of days.

It almost sounds like that noise a bike makes when you put a baseball card against its wheel. It's not very loud, but when I'm working in a silent room, it's been pretty annoying. I opened the back and blew all the dust out and all that, but the problem seems to only have got worse since then. The fan is still spinning at its usual 2000rpm.

So I have a very quiet bedroom, and when I have noticed that the macbook pro 13inch current model makes a click from time to time, it's like once or twice every hour. Dec 10, 2008I am starting to a hear a clicking sound opening and closing my new MBP. It sounds like a loose hinge or a cable getting caught or something.
I took it to an Apple store to see if they could pop it open and take a look but they said they would have to send it away and it would take 7 to 10 business day. I really don't want to be without my new computer for 7 to 10 days. It isn't that big of deal but it does tick me off every time time I open and close and I worry that if it is a cable it would eventually cause a problem.

Sep 15, 2006My problem with my brand-new (three day old) MacBook is not a "creaky" hinge (a problem already posted at [URL]); rather, when the computer has time to warm up, the hinge makes a one-time "CLICK" upon opening the lid (the sound comes from the right corner). This is really annoying me, and I'm worried that the repeated click (which signals something rubbing against something else) will wear down the joints and ruin my computer prematurely.
[Side note: The click is especially loud and offensive when the MacBook is warmed up after half an hour or so; when it's cold and shut down, the click is much quieter. This makes me think that the plastic parts are swelling and expanding a little when the computer is power on. I'm not too comfortable with the idea of the joints wearing down due to normal use. I want this computer to last me 3 years at least!]

Nov 7, 2007I've recently been getting a clicking noise from my hard drive, and when it happens 90% of the time my mac crashes for about 10 seconds. First thing I did was verify my disk in disk utility and I got a response I'm not entirely clear of the meaning so I've attached a screenshot of what my response is. I'm going to try some other 3rd party app to see whats up with my hard drive such as techtool pro...I'm on a 2.33 ghz 15" macbook pro with leopard.
