MacBook Pro :: Extremely Quiet Clicking Noise

Aug 18, 2010

So this is a new MBP(returned it 2 times till i got the right one). So I have a very quiet bedroom, and when I have noticed that the macbook pro 13inch current model makes a click from time to time, it's like once or twice every hour. I was wondering if this is anything I should worry about? Getting another exchange is not an option, I mean I could but I rather not, cause the Apple store folks seem to be getting kind of tired of seeing me. For the Curious:

1st return - Sudden freezes that happened on the second day of purchase!
2nd return - The hinge stuck out on the left side.
Current MBP - I am starting to notice the quiet clicks, not sure if I should worry about it.

MacBook Pro :: Loud Click - No Fan Reading And Quiet Clicking

Dec 7, 2009

I turned on my uMBP today and took it over to my bed, and when I set it on my lap, there was a loud click noise (louder than the normal motion sensor click) and then a quiet clicking noise started up in the left corner. I took a look at the iStat reading and it said 0 rpm for the fan. I'm assuming that the fan just gave out. I took it in to an authorized service provider and he said that he is "concerned that it could be the hard drive." Does that makes sense to anyone? Regardless, it's well under warranty. But now I'm stuck using a crappy PC until I get it back and i'm already in withdrawal!

MacBook Pro :: Momentous XT Noise & Quiet Hard Drives

Dec 7, 2010

I just upgraded my 13" Macbook Pro 2.53GHz Mid 2009 to the Momentus XT 500Gb and its pretty quiet, but not practically silent like the original Hitachi 250Gb drive. It sounds like a little fan is going pretty much all the time. I also tried the Western Digital Scorpio Black and it wasn't much quieter. Are there any almost silent (fast would be nice) drives other with 320Gb+ other than SSD? Might there be a hard drive controller or something Apple loads onto their factory drives that makes them quieter?

Mac Pro :: 2009 Mac Pro Noise - How To Quiet

Aug 26, 2009

I just got a 2.66 Quad-core Mac Pro. I've read a lot of comments about how quiet they are, things like "silent", "can't tell that it's running", etc. Mine is certainly quieter than my G5, but it is far from silent. I hear the typical high-pitched whine that I expect from computers, not loud, but there. But the sound that's starting to bug me is a low-frequency sound, almost like motor. It oscillates in volume from. It's not loud, but it has an irritating quality. I can't tell where it emanates from almost silent to too loud. It's not the graphics card or the disk drive, and all the fans are running under 1000 rpm. I'm guessing this isn't normal, but does anyone have an idea of where the sound is coming from?

MacBook Pro :: Harddrive Clicking / And Have The Clicking Noise?

Sep 6, 2010

I may have found a solution for all the people out there who upgraded their hd's to a 7200rpm and have the clicking noise. Apple released a firmware update for the 7200rpm drives that shipped with the uMBP. You can get the file from here.I don't know if this will fix only the hd's shipped with the MBP or any 7200rpm drive but its worth a try.PS: Also i ask that anyone who tries this please report back on your results.

OS X :: Clicking Noise Every Minute From Macbook - How To Fix It

Jan 22, 2009

Not sure from where in my macbook it's coming, but it started recently. The only thing that changed recently is that i relocated it to a different city, but i don't see why that would cause this. Clicking isn't really the right word to describe the noise...it's like a sweeping click. "Shtock." And it gets louder if i increase the volume on my computer, but it's definitely not coming from any application. And it usually goes off every minute, but sometimes there are breaks of two minutes or so.

MacBook Pro :: How To Fix Clicking Noise And Get Its Source

Jun 19, 2009

So I turned on my Macbook Pro today and this clicking noise is coming from the rightmost fan hole. I am really nervous that it is a serious issue as I use my Macbook for probably 15 hours a day for all sorts of artistic ventures.

After exploring, I've discovered with I use it on certain angles, the clicking stops, or increases/decreases in noisiness

Anybody have experience with this? Is there a way to clean it of the issue?

I haven't had any problems with my system before, and the computer itself is operating perfectly

MacBook :: Clicking Noise Coming - How To Fix It

MacBook Pro :: Dropped It And Now There Is A Clicking Noise?

Jun 7, 2012

Yesterday my MBP was accidentally dropped on the ground. It landed on the front left side, making a small dent (right beside the power light button). As far as I can tell, the computer seems to be functioning properly, except now there are 2 main issues:

1) The shell is slightly bent so that the computer doesn't sit straight (and wobbles).

2) There is a small, randomly occurring metal clicking sound coming from the computer; it's very irritating. I can't be sure, but it seems to be coming from the right side.

what is causing the clicking sound, and if it can be fixed? This computer is only 2 months old and is still under warranty; do you think the warranty would cover this sort of damage given the accidental nature of it?

MacBook Pro :: Clicking Noise In My Hard Drive?

Aug 30, 2010

I just bought a brand new MacBook Pro about 2 weeks ago. I'd say about a week ago I notice a clicking noise when I pick up the macbook or move it at all coming from the hard drive.

I finally took to the internet to find out what was going on, and got mixed results. Some said that it was normal for a Macbook Pro and that it was securing the hard drive so it didn't break while I moved it, and a vast majority said that the hard drive's failure was imminent. So what is it?

MacBook Pro :: Fixing Pinging/Clicking Noise?

Nov 5, 2010

My MacBook Pro 15inch makes a hollow sounding click/ping noise when I move along the track pad. It's NOT the motion sensor, that noise is more defined and pinpointed. This noise is random, sometimes occurs non-stop for an hour or two at a time every time I move the mouse, but usually occurs at random. Sometimes it also occurs when i have my computer on my lap or tilted and move it from side to side. But again, it is not the normal motion sensor noise.

I'm on my third MacBook Pro in less than 30 days. My first one corrupted all my files and my second one pinged like this one. I just need confirmation that this is actually OK and I will get a good MacBook and the money will be well spent. I think most of my issues stem from the fact that I'm new to Mac and just don't know what is normal.

MacBook :: Random Clicking Noise From Superdrive / How To Fix It

Oct 28, 2008

I've had my unibody MacBook 2.4ghz for a few days, and I've been hearing a strange clicking noise coming from the superdrive. At first I thought it was the hard drive, it almost sounds like a seeking head, but upon closer inspection, the sound is definitely coming from the optical drive.

This is happening without a disc in the drive, and seems to make the noise every 15-20 seconds. It's not that loud, but loud enough to drive me crazy in a quiet environment.

I have Win XP installed on bootcamp, so I logged into windows to see if the clicking was present in a different OS (to rule out a driver issue in OSX). The issue is exactly the same in windows.

The drive does work, but I'm worried there might be something wrong with it that will cause a premature death.

MacBook Air :: Rev. B Screen Makes Clicking Noise - How To Fix It

Jan 13, 2009

- When I clean the screen with the included cloth or any cleaning cloth, the screen makes a clicking noise. As if it's like not flushed against the bezel. This only happens on the left part of the screen from, top to bottom. If I wipe in the center, no problem at all. I was wondering if anyone of you is experiencing the same problem? Btw, I also have the lines, but its very faint and I don't notice it as much as the my 3rd replacement Air, which I exchanged for this one. The Apple Store said that if I had any more line problems with this one, they won't replace it anymore and they would just try and replace the screen. I don't know if my problem is a common one and worth it to send my computer out to get its screen replaced, and who knows, maybe the replacement screen might have the lines and that's why I'm worried about getting the screen replaced, in addition to being out of my laptop for a couple of days.

MacBook Pro :: Fan Making Faint Clicking Noise

Jul 4, 2010

I have a 13" MacBook Pro from Mid-2009 and just today I've noticed a real faint clicking noise coming from the fan. It almost sounds like that noise a bike makes when you put a baseball card against its wheel. It's not very loud, but when I'm working in a silent room, it's been pretty annoying. I opened the back and blew all the dust out and all that, but the problem seems to only have got worse since then. The fan is still spinning at its usual 2000rpm.

MacBook Pro :: Hinge Makes Clicking Noise When Lid Is Opened?

Sep 15, 2006

My problem with my brand-new (three day old) MacBook is not a "creaky" hinge (a problem already posted at [URL]); rather, when the computer has time to warm up, the hinge makes a one-time "CLICK" upon opening the lid (the sound comes from the right corner). This is really annoying me, and I'm worried that the repeated click (which signals something rubbing against something else) will wear down the joints and ruin my computer prematurely.

[Side note: The click is especially loud and offensive when the MacBook is warmed up after half an hour or so; when it's cold and shut down, the click is much quieter. This makes me think that the plastic parts are swelling and expanding a little when the computer is power on. I'm not too comfortable with the idea of the joints wearing down due to normal use. I want this computer to last me 3 years at least!]

It used to do it every once in a while and I didn't think too much of it, but recently it's started doing it more, quite a bit actually. Is this something I need to be worried about? I'm thinking it is the Hard Drive, is that true? if so, then what? I am also getting the spinning beach ball a lot more often, for a good minute at a time. I am currently on the latest build of SL, the one right before release.

MacBook Pro :: Clicking Noise Heard When Right Corner Pressed

Apr 13, 2010

Basically, I have noticed that sometimes if I put pressure (not really hard or anything just like if I lean my wrist on it when typing) on the bottom right corner of the macbook, it makes a clicking sound when I press it. It sounds to me like something is bending when I press down there. It doesn't always click consistently, and sometimes I have to press in different places to get it to click.

I only noticed it when I applied a gelaskin to the top and was rubbing it to get the bubbles out and noticed when I rubbed over that corner it would make a clicking sound. Its really weird and I don't want my macbook to die as I'm already on my second one this year! I have backed up the hard drive as I have been told that the hard drive is in that corner but I have no idea if thats the problem or not. It seems to be that something is loose but I don't know what or how!!

MacBook Pro :: Audible Clicking Noise When Laptop Lifted

Apr 28, 2010

So I was writing a paper with the computer on my lap, then moved it with the lid still open to my desk, but as I was lifting it up I heard a very audible clicking noise. I attempted to repeat the experiment and found that my MBP will make a distinct single click when lifted suddenly upwards with the screen open. The noise comes from the right side, I assume from the super drive. Does the super drive have a sudden motion sensor like the HD, or is this something else? The noise never happens when the laptop is stationary, only like I said, when open and lifted straight up suddenly. I guess it happens with the lid closed, but after a few times, it stops doing it.

MacBook Pro :: Touchpad Clicking Noise Only In Bottom Left

Jun 20, 2010

This might be a little hard to explain, but will be easier if you have an MBP to do this exercise. My touchpad/trackpad, is fine, except for that when tapped in the lower left quadrant (where you normally click) it makes a click noise (from the pad itself) tapping anywhere else yields no sound. I pushed hard on the pad, and kinda pressured it in every which way, and every time I do, the clicking stops for about a minute or so.

MacBook Pro :: 13" Hinge Clicking Noise - Poll

Jun 22, 2010

I see that a few people have an issue with the unibody 13" MBP making a "clicking" noise when the lid is opened. The issue varies from a mild click to a loud click. Usually, once the click occurs, it does not repeat itself until after sometime. This poll is to help determine whether or not it's worth it to get this issue fixed by Apple, specifically if the clicking is not bothersome (read: not too loud).

MacBook Pro :: Hinge Cracky - Makes Loud Clicking Noise

Jul 7, 2009

My 17" Macbook Pro was purchased on Feb 24th 2009 via telesales, so it's less than 6 months old. The hinge is very creaky and on the right hand side it makes a loud clicking noise when I open and close it, also the whole screen seems to creak, not just the hinge. The wall charger is in my opinion very loose, it was loose when I got it ( should have changed it then ), but I haven't really moved it that much ( maybe 10 times in the space of 5 months and this is also becoming a concern. I contacted Apple today and they told me I have 1 year of telephone support and 3 years parts and labour as I order though Higher Education.

They told me that I can go to a Apple store or authorized repair centre to have it looked at, but all the stores are 2 hours away. I asked about mail-in repairs and he said that could be set up but they would prefer if I went to a store. The question is, should I send it in and hope they take care of my Mac i.e don't scratch or mark it etc. After reading some stories about repairs, I'm a little concerned about it, and don't like anyone to touch my Laptop. Obviously I would prefer a replacement as I have work to do and I don't want to be without my Mac.
