When I turn on my 17" iMac I hear a loud clicking noise. The noise repeats every few minutes and finally a folder icon appears with a question mark in it. Could my hard drive be failing?

My 17" Macbook Pro was purchased on Feb 24th 2009 via telesales, so it's less than 6 months old. The hinge is very creaky and on the right hand side it makes a loud clicking noise when I open and close it, also the whole screen seems to creak, not just the hinge. The wall charger is in my opinion very loose, it was loose when I got it ( should have changed it then ), but I haven't really moved it that much ( maybe 10 times in the space of 5 months and this is also becoming a concern. I contacted Apple today and they told me I have 1 year of telephone support and 3 years parts and labour as I order though Higher Education.
They told me that I can go to a Apple store or authorized repair centre to have it looked at, but all the stores are 2 hours away. I asked about mail-in repairs and he said that could be set up but they would prefer if I went to a store. The question is, should I send it in and hope they take care of my Mac i.e don't scratch or mark it etc. After reading some stories about repairs, I'm a little concerned about it, and don't like anyone to touch my Laptop. Obviously I would prefer a replacement as I have work to do and I don't want to be without my Mac.
Well my Macbook Pro makes a loud "sticky" sorta noise when I click on the edges of it, and you can really hear it when i click outside the trackpad on the actual frame. Its quite annoying, and I just bought the new 13" Macbook Pro and this does not make this noise. [URL]
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am so upset right now, this is my 2nd macbook with this problem. I just got this macbook yesterday and the hard drive is making a clicking noise, but it isn't a click....click...click... like a lot of people have had, it's actually more of a quick series of clicks every few seconds, almost like the hard drive is shaking. It goes away for a bit when I am typing, like right now, but after I stop it comes right back.
Also the fan is pretty loud, considering I haven't put anything on the computer yet.. I've already been to the genius bar and all they did was give me a new, worse macbook, so there is no way I'm going back. Are there any fixes for a noisy hard drive aside from voiding my warranty and putting my own in? If it is normal, I might just invest in a good pair on noise cancelling head phones... Thanks!
My Macbook Air has suddenly decided not to turn. I have tried the rebook using the left hand side keys 'shift/control/option & power' but still nothing happens. Every now and again when I try turning it on using the power button the fan turns on and is really loud?
View 1 Replies View Related I have a 2006 White Intel Imac and I recently replaced the Superdrive with a non apple Panasonic Superdrive Model: UJ-85J-B from a used Acer Laptop. The replacement drive has no sensor circuit board. After putting it back together there was a loud humming noise and I assumed it was the new drive but when I took it out and started the Imac without it the noise remained? Now I am thinking it is the fan just below where the Superdrive sits? I blew out as much dust as I could from this fan and around the bottom of the case and that made the noise just a little less annoying. It sounds like it is about to take off like an jet airplane?Â

I reset the SMU but now am hearing a loud fan sound and there is air blowing out of the horizontal vent in back of the desktop- which does not typically happen. The computer has not crashed since I reset the SMU 20 minutes ago. I'm worried about the noise.Â
Also, it has been really hot where I live, with a heat index of 110 today and I don't have air conditioning. Current indoor air temp is about 86 degrees F.  Â
Also, I have been seeing thin horizontal stripes across my screen for the past few months, related or unrelated issue?Â

Sometimes I lift and carefully move my 17-inch MBP a short distance to another flat surface without putting it to sleep mode, it starts making really loud mechanical noise when I put it down, so loud that people in the same room can hear the noise and I can feel vibrations too! What causes this? Where does this noise come from? Is my MBP defective?
View 3 Replies View RelatedOn my 13" MacBook Pro, the hinge makes a cracking noise on the right side of the computer (near the power button) when the screen is positioned all the way back.The entire hinge also makes a loud popping noise when I adjust the screen position. The screen seems very tight, and it takes a little bit of effort to move the screen, and when the screen is moved it makes the loud popping noise.
This is probably going to make some of you guys cringe, but sometimes putting pressure down on the top of the case close to where the black hinge meets to unibody enclosure seems to stop the popping noises. Putting downwards pressure on the hinge, or flipping the computer over and putting pressure on it that way, also seems to alter how much popping noise there is.
If I mess around a bit with applying pressure on different parts of the computer around the hinge, I can usually eliminate the noise. But, the cracking noise when I put the screen all the way back is still there.Any ideas what to do? It's not interfering with the operation of the computer, it's just incredibly annoying and this is only a four month old machine which shouldn't be creaking and cracking already.
I may have found a solution for all the people out there who upgraded their hd's to a 7200rpm and have the clicking noise. Apple released a firmware update for the 7200rpm drives that shipped with the uMBP. You can get the file from here.I don't know if this will fix only the hd's shipped with the MBP or any 7200rpm drive but its worth a try.PS: Also i ask that anyone who tries this please report back on your results.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 13" Late 2008 Al. Macbook, and something strange just happened. I was typing in Pages, when I started to hear and feel something clicking underneath my right palm. I recognized this as the hard drive, so I immediately shut down the computer. Tried restarting and heard the clicking again, so I held down the power button and force shut it down before it fully started up. Turned it around, removed the battery for a couple of seconds, then replaced it. Started up again, and the clicking disappeared; all my files are here as they were left.

Symptoms: I can hear constant beeping, like you are clicking on a link that is not working, you get that Ding/beep. It is constant, like your continuing hitting the enter button on a link that is not working.Â
I reboot and the sound stops. I don't think it is the mouse - and I do not always have it turned on. Sometimes also when I log in, when you type password, there are characters already entered, and it keeps going ... I have to hard reboot.Â
As far as I know I have not dropped this laptop, nothing has been dropped on it. I can not see if any of the keys are pushed in, and the trackpad looks normal.Â

i have had my imac little under a week i been looking for any faults so can change soon as. I have 1 dead pixel, not yellow tinting, no buzz or hum noise but not sure about the hard drive it could be just me.
So how quiet should a imac be? i hear the hard drive working wen sometimes going through sites or doing program stuff nothing extremely loud though just quietish sounds that last few sec which different from the standard leave alone computer noise, which i think is normal with any computer but since i found at thread on hard drive noises i not sure now.
so question is really how quiet should a iMac be? i guess you should be able to hear it running but wen you are doing stuff should you hear the hard drive at all? just bit paranoid at moment since first mac.
I used to have 160GB 5400 HDD until today's morning. Now there's WD Scorpio BLue 500GB installed in my MBP. And I can hear some silent noise, coming from that HDD. I mean my previous, low-capacity 160GB Hitachi was just silent (no noise at all!!) Is there anything, that can be done about it? I mean if I had known, I should've gone for 7200.4 500GB Momentus! I still hope there are some tweaks, that can silent my HDD, Are there?

Now won't boot past grey screen with flashing question mark and still makes clicking noises occasionally. Holding option key doesn't let me select volume to boot from... inserting startup disk for Leopard doesn't work, have reset PRAM, NVRAM, and Open Firmware and have tried to access single user mode without any luck... what are my options? I am more concerned with recovering my data from my hard drive than saving my aging computer.

When I click on the built-in mouse (whatever it's called), it's a lot louder/snappier sounding and feeling - makes more of a loud clicking sound - then my old Powerbook G4 did. Might I have got one that's a little out of whack or are they all that way? If it's normal, why so "clicky?" These days aren't they able to make things softer/quieter? I also noticed how sharp one of the corners is in the area where the latch (or lack of) is...that center area where you lift up the lid. I like that much better than the old one but does anyone else have the problem of a corner being too sharp?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI turned on my uMBP today and took it over to my bed, and when I set it on my lap, there was a loud click noise (louder than the normal motion sensor click) and then a quiet clicking noise started up in the left corner. I took a look at the iStat reading and it said 0 rpm for the fan. I'm assuming that the fan just gave out. I took it in to an authorized service provider and he said that he is "concerned that it could be the hard drive." Does that makes sense to anyone? Regardless, it's well under warranty. But now I'm stuck using a crappy PC until I get it back and i'm already in withdrawal!

View 19 Replies View RelatedI had the fans and HDD replaced in my 1.67Ghz PB G4 in January, but I think the fan noise is getting too loud again, plus the HDD randomly squeaks and squeals. The problem with the random squealing is that I can never start the camera on my phone quick enough to record it, and it is completely random! Does anyone know what the normal operating noise is for my laptop, or where I can find this out from? The normal fan noise is OK, but when the processor is under full load and the fans kick in to full speed, it sounds like the vacuum cleaner is on in the room. Should I take it back to the shop? It was 'repaired' roughly 2months ago.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've noticed that most Macs have their fans run around 2000RPM, maybe 1300RPM. I was surprised to find that my CPU fan runs at only 500RPM pretty much all the time. However, it is much louder than those other Macs that have higher fan speeds.
Oh, and in case there is a misunderstanding, the fans are NOT running fast, and the temps are low. I've seen a few people complaining about this only to have answers about reducing the fan speed.

But not with processes as much has hard drive related actions such as playing back saved video, loading files in the finder, especially applications, and its been temporarily freezing lately for like 10 seconds. I have also noticed unusually loud clicking noises from the hard drive, which i am pretty sure screams imminent hard drive failure. Do this sound , does 4 gigs of ram make a noticeable difference over 2?

My living space if very cold and quite dusty (warehouse). I notice it more on colder mornings ( inside temp 45° - 65°F ). I have a mac book pro, version 10.7.3. When I use quicktime player 10.1 to do a screen recording, and I turn the volume up, there is a loud screeching noise. The noise goes away if I turn down my laptop's volume or if I turn down the volume in the quick time player settings, but then my video no longer has audible audio.

I have a problem with my G5 freezing and it is preceded with by loud fan noise. I was wondering if the hard drive could be the problem? It had the problem with 10.4 as well as 10.5. It happens at startup most of the time and eventually lets me get up and running and stops being a problem.

For those of you that have the new imac, is your HD also pretty loud? I notice it constantly. Whenever I am browsing I can hear the ticking noise for a couple of seconds, this restarts every time I navigate to another page or simply by typing text like I'm doing now or scrolling down. I realize this is with all HDs, but this one is pretty darn loud. Does anyone else have the same issue?

I have a MacBook Pro 2009 with a 500GB drive (WDigital, I replaced the 160GB). I was using Perian to play mkv movies, and yesterday I downloaded Plex to try it out. But in both every time I play a Mkv file the fans start spinning, I think it's the fans or maybe the hard drive. But it's quite a loud whoosh all throughout the movie. Is this normal or playing a mkv file shouldn't make any noise at all? Should it use a lot of CPU? I'm using Leopard latest version.
