Intel Mac :: Can Use It From 2008 With Broken Graphic Card As Extra Monitor
May 15, 2012
Can i use My Old iMac as a extra monitor. My Old iMac from early 2008 has a broken graphic card nvidia 8800 gs. When I start it up I hear the bong and see the symbol spinning then the screen goes black from right to left the computer is running but I can't use it. I assume it's the graphic card. Can I use this iMac as an extra monitor to my other iMac.?
Info:
Imac 24", Mac OS X (10.5.5)

i want to hook up 3+ monitors to my mac pro, i currently have a 8800 gt and another was just ordered but i heard u cant hook up more then one 8800 gt at a time. i dont want sli i just want to be able to hook up multiple monitors. i have a ati X 1900 XT too and i can order another one if that will solve the issue. or if there are other cards that are newer and better that will work i can get that too. money isnt an issue, i just need the most powerful graphic card i can get right now, that will allow me to have more then 3 monitors. i know ill need more then one card so i just need to know which is the most powerful i can get and i can put more then one into the mac pro.

I have an iMac Intel ( 2008 ) and a problem came up so I figured if anybody knew anything about this as we don't have the biggest support in Greece to be honest , to help me.I pushed the power button but it gets stuck on the boot screen after the "bong" sound but it shows a second apple logo next to the 'original' one but it is broken as extra pixels.

How certain are we that (physical?) interference between the airport card/wifi and the graphics card can be cured with a download, and not actual hardware fix/repair? I mean, I know technology is advancing rapidly, but I'm not sure I can believe that a download can solve the issue that the 4850s are experiencing.

I have a G4 powerbook with an LCD that only displays the top 25% of the screen. I've been using an external monitor with it just fine. Today, I reinstalled the OS and ran into a problem. The main OSX startup menu (you know, where it asks for your location, timezone, personal info, etc) is prompting me for information, and I can't see the forms to fill them in! The external monitor defaults to "extended" as opposed to "mirrored", and the forms are embedded, meaning I can't drag them over to my external monitor. Obviously, if I can't fill out these forms and get to the desktop, the laptop is completely useless.
Does anyone know how to force the external monitor to be "mirrored" from startup? Is there a keycommand?

This is a really weird question, but here'goes: I just got my internal blu-ray burner. I hooked it up, removing the fans and all that jazz to get the SATA cable plugged in. Turned on the computer, and the drive was not recognized.
I know it has power, since I can operate it manually (but no disks inserted are recognized in System Profiler nor Toast). Oh, and in the System Profiler under Serial-ATA it does list 6 ports (though 2 with hard drives, 1 and 4-6 are empty).
I fiddled around, made sure cables were plugged in, still nothing.
Then I tried to just plug in one of my extra internal hard drives through the connectors I was using for the 2nd optical drive (power and SATA cable). It won't recognize the hard drive (doesn't seem to even know it's there).

I currently have one 19" Samsung monitor connected to my iMac via the Mini-DVI. I am looking to get another monitor hooked up, but of course there aren't any more video ports. Are there any alternatives? to have two monitors connected to my iMac? I have heard of the DualHead2Go product, and possibly connecting via USB? Any info on the above and if there are any other methods.

I run a small business off an Early 2008 MacPro (8 core). I mainly do PCB CAD work, and find that it would be useful to have a second monitor. I'm considering a Dell 24" or 27" model. I run a 4870 which has a DVI and a display port. I'm also considering another computer as a back up, as I had a video card failure in the MacPro that left me unable to work for a week until a new card arrived. My question is this: do I buy another old Mac Pro as a back up machine and get the extra monitor too or just buy a 21" or 27" new Imac and use it as the primary system with an extra monitor, leaving the 2008 MacPro as the reserve machine. The software I run is via parallels and will run on a low spec PC. But I do not want a windows machine. What do you think?

I have been having problems with sometimes the computer turning on but getting no output from the graphics card. This seems to only happen about half the time it boots up, otherwise it appears normal. Sometimes it totally fails to wake up from sleep. I have been able to use Remote Desktop to gain access and have taken a screenshot of graphics card in about this mac when it has played up. It is a 2008 mac pro with 10.5.8. The graphics card is a ATI Radeon HD 2600.

Currently with Mac Pro Harpertown 2600xt with 20" ACD, and i want a new 24"LED ACD, Gaming is not main topic for this system (Where i have PS3 , 360 , Wii and a i7+9800GX2 rig)but i want a decent graphic card for my master degree thesis (Working in GPGPU field), GTX285 in june seem good choice for me . it seem GTX285 mac edition doesn't have mini DP so that make me hard to decide.
if I choose 24"LED, I can't use GTX285 or other card in future from Nvidia
if I choose GTX285 I can't use *Apple* display (when i think apple will release only MDP port display)
If you be me, which one do you choose;

. I have a G4 Power Mac running OS 10.5.8. Three years ago I changed my AGP 4X Graphics Card that came with the computer. It was an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro. I installed a new Graphics Accelerator Card Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition. For the past three years it worked beautifully with clear sharp 3D imaging. However, on Monday April 26, my monitor started showing vertical and horizontal flickering wavy lines. I thought it was my monitor that went bad, so I tried another monitor from another Mac and it did the same thing. Luckily I kept my old AGP card that I removed. I reinstalled my old card and the monitor is showing perfect with no wavy flickering lines. Can anyone tell me what is the problem? Do I have to buy another Graphic Card? The Radeon 9800 was great for playing games with 3D imaging.

I'm trying to install a Geforce 8800GTS but when I start my Mac Pro nothing happens, my display doesn't start and I can't select Windows in the Bootcamp. Anyway I tried starting Windows directly too and the same problem, my screen doesn't start. But if the DVI is connected in the ATI 2600XT and I enter in Windows I can see the 2 cards in the device manager, but my 8800GTS is marked with an yellow icon, saying that the drivers are not installed, but really are installed...

I am looking at buying either a MBA 1.86 SSD, or a MBP. Given the new graphics card in the MBA I was wondering if the following apps work well?
- GIMP / Photoshop (very basic stuff done on them. Image size is usually A4)
- Parallel / XP pro
- AutoCAD (in Parallel. Again just basic stuff)
- iMovie (edit together short films of my daughter)
I use other packages, but I know they will be fine. This will be a secondary machine to my pc so I will only use it on holiday or when I go to meetings.

We are planning to replace a 4yr old PC with a iMac for a family use.My husband is interested in music, iTunes, Garage Band and internet browsing.I'm doing some lite photo editing and interessted in coping our DVD collection and making digital copies that can be played on the iPhone and iPad (wanting quickest conversion time) - our 6yr old son just wants to play a few educational games at this point in his life.My husband thinks that the "refubished" 21.5" w/ 3.06GHz C2D, 4GB of memory, 1TB hard drive and ATI 4670 graphics card with 256MB would meet our needs at $1,299.00

I have tried googling and searching this but haven't got much from anywhere, I am a student in a Broadcasting program and I have a late 2008 Macbook (Dual Core, 250gb, 2 gb ram; black casing). I am aware that the Pro versions support easy monitor hookups via the DV connections; however I am a poor, starving student with a large widescreen monitor that I primarily use for gaming. However I would also like to use it with my macbook for when I am doing video editing and graphic design. So essentially, will this Macbook in any way support a Plug and Play monitor (20 inch)?

Like the title says; my dad's vision is getting progressively worse, so I'm looking to fix him up with a ridiculously bright, preferably very large monitor. He likes photography, so at least moderate color accuracy would be nice (video performance is completely irrelevant), but is secondary, since if he can't see it it doesn't much matter how good the color is. Not ridiculously expensive, also nice.
I can, of course, go sort monitors at Newegg by brightness and pick the highest one, but if some of the online tests are to be believed, the specced brightness isn't necessarily accurate, and that doesn't tell the story if it looks like complete crap otherwise.
On paper the HannsG HG-281DPB is ridiculous in brightness and size, but it's basically a TV (HDMI-only); I like ViewSonic and Samsung, but on paper most of their screens aren't notably bright.
