Software :: Won't Work To Stop Time Machine / Can't Work With Exe

Sep 3, 2009

Since I just lost my hard drive on my iMac 24 Intel, I am using external hard drive to backup via Time Machine. My question is what procedures are needed when you disconnect ext. hard drive? Do you change Time Machine from ON to OFF?

I know that I have to eject the ext. hard drive using proper commands, but what happens whenever I reinstall the ext. hard drive? Does Time Machine start over from the beginning or just update for changes since my last backup via Time Machine?

When I go on trips, I store ext hard drive in a safe and this is why I am asking.

OS X :: Time Machine And Wireless Backup Via USB?

Mar 2, 2010

This has been discussed before, but since there seems to be some disagreement I'm just trying to consolidate some information. The BT HomeHub wi-fi router has a spare USB port. I have a 500Gb USB2 external hd. Using this as a wi-fi drive with Time Machine doesn't seem to work because of differences in formatting (Fat32 etc.). Is there a safe and reliable workaround this issue?

If not, what is a wi-fi backup alternative to Time Capsule? (I just don't want to pay for a wi-fi router that I don't need.)

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Does Not Work On Time Capsule?

May 20, 2012

I have updated to 10.7.4, and now Time Machine does not work on my Time Capsule.  I have erased all backups using the Airport Utility.  When I try to run Time Machine, the disk is mounted, files are calculated, backup starts, then stops, and no backup is done.  Also, no error messages.

Hardware :: USB Support For Wireless Time Machine Backups

Aug 3, 2010

So I've been using my old trusty wireless router (Linksys WRTS54G) for quite some time now and I decided I need to upgrade to N-draft and something with USB support for wireless time machine backups. The only problem I've been running into is that I can't locate any decent rated routers out there which do not conflict with using OS X. Essentially I would settle for something without USB support and keep plugging in my portable HD into my macbook each time I need to backup, but is there anything out there? I just can't justify spending $175 for a Airport Extreme.

MacBook Air :: Finding Wireless Storage For Time Machine

Sep 8, 2008

While I would LOVE to get a 1TB Time Capsule and use it with Time Machine on my MBA, that is a whole lot of money when I already have a wireless router that works just fine and I can find 1TB of storage for much cheaper than that... My question is, what are my other options? I have a Mac mini so my first thought was to plug a big ol' USB HD into that and have the MBA backup to that... Well I could access files on the HD from the MBA just fine but Time Machine refused to use it for backups...

I have seen little wireless adapter boxes with USB ports for adding printers and HD's to your home network, would something like this work or would I run into the same issue with Time Machine not wanting to use it as a backup device?

Hardware :: Wireless Hard Drive To Use With Time Machine?

Mar 30, 2010

I just can't figure this out for myself. I've tried. And failed, miserably.

I have a 27" iMac. I'm connected to the internet wirelessly via a O2 Wireless Box II.

I need to buy an external hard drive on which to back up my data. I want to use it with Time Machine.

Ideally I'd like the external hard drive to work wirelessly. Is there such a thing (apart from Time Capsule)?

I was thinking about buying a Time Capsule. However, I only have one computer (no file, etc. sharing required here), so maybe I would be wasting my money??

Could the Time Capsule replace my O2 wireless box II or would I still need the O2 wireless box II to connect to the internet? (Sorry, I don't understand about 'routers' and 'modems'.)

OS X :: Wireless Time Machine Back Up To External Hard Drive

Hardware :: Password Protect Time Machine Wireless Backup Disk?

Sep 13, 2009

I am using an external hard drive that is connected via USB 2.0 to my Airport Extreme to back up using Time Machine. In order to get Time Machine to recognize the hard drive in question, however, I had to mount it as a drive on the network. Can I put a password on the hard drive that is separate from my network's password? What I want is a situation in which people can get onto my network using a password but CANNOT access the Time Machine backup hard drive.

OS X :: Time Machine / Wireless Modem Stopped Hard Drive From Mounting

Feb 14, 2010

why I tryed using their wireless service, which would seem screwed my Hard drive. I installed a small application from Telstra (main telecommunications company in Australia) that allows you to connect via a USB modem to the internet wirelessly. After completing the installation, it prompted me to restart and I did so. However, before it shut down a dialogue came up saying it had to clear/reset the system cache or something like that. I clicked ok (only thing i could do) and my computer restart as normal and I had internet. The problems started when my time machine tried to backup; where it stopped while "preparing to backup" and came up with an error dialogue saying something like Time failed because it couldn't find the directory. I restarted my mac once more without the USB modem attached and tried the backup again, whereby i new error came saying it couldn't mount the drive. One more restart later and I now have a Time Machine that doesn't backup or see prior backups, and a Hard Drive that not only can't be mounted but isn't recognised as even a Media device by Disc Utilities.

OS X Mavericks :: Why Does Time Machine Say Wireless Hard Drive Doesn't Have Enough Space When It Clearly Does

Dec 1, 2014

I have a 2 TB western digital hard drive connected via USB to my airport extreme (Y2012) that i've been using the past 2 years to connect to wirelessly. The hard drive has 2 partitions, ~1 TB each. 1 partition for backing up, the other for storing media. Recently I deleted my macbook pro backup. My macbook pro has a 500GB hard drive, of which about 120 GB is free.

Since I deleted the old time machine backup disk image and told time machine to start a new backup, I am now receiving an error. It's telling me there isn't enough room on the drive, when the 1TB partition i'm trying to use (as i've sucessfully done in the past) has nothing on it. 1 full TB free, and my macbook pro can't backup a 500 GB hard drive, which isn't even full itself.

I have a macbook pro early 2011, and I never know when the board is going to go koput again and I don't currently have a backup of my stuff while this problem persists.

Hardware :: Will Time Machine Work With Any NAS

Doesnt Use AirPort Disks If you have a hard drive attached to your AirPort Extreme Base Stationor for that matter, any network-attached storage (NAS) device except the Time CapsuleTime Machine wont recognize it.

Is this still true with Snow Leapord? Specifically I'm considering this drive:

OS X :: How To Setup Time Machine To Work On A NAS

Feb 21, 2008

I've just got my iMac so for me it was important to get TM up and running before I start doing some real work (and hard play!).

I want to share the lessons learned from my experience and from others in this forum in the hope that it will help others.

I am using a NS4300N NAS from Promise on a LAN with an iMac running Leopard 10.5.2. I connect to it using SMB. It should work with any NAS since the instructions here are not NAS specific. I haven't tried with AFP.

Applications :: How Does Time Machine Work With An External HD

I would like to set up Time Machine with an external HD. Is it worth it? Isn't it supposed to be a seamless backup over a network storage? But if I have to keep plugging my external HD in everytime I would like to backup, will that be good enough? Say, I plug in my external HD every 2 weeks, that would give me a good sufficient Time Machine backup? How long does it take?

OS X :: Can Time Machine Work On Multiple Drives?

Can time machine work on multiple drives?

Currently, I have time machine backing up my iMac on to an external drive.

Can I set time machine to back up my iMac on HD2 AND ALSO back up HD3 to HD4?

OS X :: Won't Work With Spotlight Index And Time Machine...

Jan 6, 2008

I notice that Spotlight only says "indexing" after I restart the computer, which isn't that often.

But that's not the only time it indexes, right? Does it index a file whenever it's created or moved?

And what about Time Machine? Again, after restarting the computer, my external backup drive that I use with Time Machine is indexed. But I never notice it being indexed when I don't restart.

Does Spotlight have to index it, or does TM handle that somehow? I mean, can I put my backup disk on Spotlight's ignore list, and still have Spotlight in Time Machine work fine?

Hardware :: How Does Time Machine Work With An External HDD

Aug 5, 2009

I was wondering how time machine would work with an external hard drive.

I need an external drive so that I can make sure that my work is backed up; I believe that Time Machine takes a new backup each time a file is edited?

Anyway; does the external drive have to be partitioned or formatted in any particular way for time machine to function?

I ask because I would like to use my external drive to store games and music (as a backup, not a primary source), but also be able to use it with time machine.

Also, does time machine make a copy of the entire mac drive, or does it just backup specific folders (such as your user areas). If so, can I select these myself?
