OS X Yosemite :: How To Enable A Disabled Admin Account
Dec 11, 2014I was testing the pwpolicy on a newly upgraded Yosemite. After rebooting, I found my local admin account was disabled.
I ran the pwpolicy on a non-server version of Yosemite and the only support article I could find is OS X Server (Yosemite): Global policies can lock out Admin accounts - Apple Support. I tried to follow the steps in the article to clear the account policies for local admin, but once I entered "/usr/bin/pwpolicy -n /Local/Default clearaccountpolicies", the system seemed hanging there and the local admin account was still disable.
Actually once I used launchctl to load the com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist, the system started to show signs not working properly, such as some basic commands like ps, dscl, man, nano, or even ls stopping to bring up any results. However, "launchctl list" showed the daemon was launched with a number of 78.
I tried to create new admin user account by rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone, but the new admin account was disabled possibly immediately after birth because of the global policy settings.

Apr 15, 2012When I upgraded to Snow Leopard, somehow my permissions have become affected and now when I log in as administrator, I am blocked from accessing folders that the administrator should be able to access. I think that my Administrator account details got deleted or changed to 'unknown' during the upgrade when I had to wipe my whole computer to load the new software. I now get the message: 'The folder “CrashReporter” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.' I can then go into 'Get Info' to change the permissions by adding my admin account (which is not there for some reason) and specifying 'read and write' and then it works fine. However, I have to do this individually for each and every folder and subfolder to make the files work properly. Is there a way of having the computer change all the access permissions to accept my admin name and password again? (So I don't have to change the permissions one at a time on each folder?)

Apr 7, 2010On 10.6.2, I noticed that in the Get Info window, permissions for a file could be changed without having to "unlock" the operation with the administrator password. This was not the case in Leopard, which required the admin password before permissions could be changed through the Get Info window.
I found this to be concerning from a security standpoint. I had hoped that 10.6.3 would fix the issue, but it still appears to be a problem. I've noticed this on three different machines, two with clean installs of 10.6 and one with an upgrade from 10.5. Does anyone else notice this issue? Am I right in assuming that this is a security issue? The ability for permissions to be changed for any file directly from the Finder's Get Info window without even an admin password seems to be rather insecure to me.
Intel Mac :: Cannot Change Admin User To Standard User (2 Admin Accounts)
Mar 6, 2012When I purchased my iMac a few years ago, I created one user account and just started using my computer. I am trying to implement a few Safe Computing practices by creating a new Admin user account and changing my original user account to a Standard user.
For some reason, I cannot change either of the accounts to a standard user after I type in the password. I've logged in as both and tried to change the other user profile to a standard user, but the checkbox is greyed out on both of the Admin User accounts.
I can create a new standard user, but I have everyting set the way I like it on my current Admin user account. It would be much easier to have a new Admin User account and "Downgrade" my original Admin account to a standard user account.
why the option to change from an Admin user to a standard user would be "Greyed Out"? The support articles walk me through, what should be a few simple steps, but I can not change the settings because the checkbox is greyed out.

Mar 21, 2012I was wondering if anyone knows of a fix for my iMac 21.5" which seems to disable the onboard sound upon restarting?
I understand that this can be remedied by resetting the SMC but I cannot be expected to do this each and every time the machine is restarted. Is there any way I can get it to work permanently?
Upon restarting the volume icon is greyed out, and pressing the volume up/down keys bring up the volume box with a "no entry" sign underneath the icon. I've tried unplugging and replugging the external speakers to no avail, and this occurs with the internal speakers also. I've checked the correct device is selected in the volume settings and the optical output is not switched on.

MacBook :: Cannot Login To Admin - Admin Rights For Temporary Time?
Nov 22, 2010I am not the admin of the computer, but the admin gave me admin rights for a temporary time being, so when I went to login to my user it asked the question if i wanted to make some change or whatever, well appaerantly I clicked the wrong choice and i had the "Remember this choice" box clicked. So is there anyway to go back to change this?I have tried restarting and completely shutting down the comp, and taking admin rights off and putting them back on.

I ran disk utility - it failed because it could not locate the clip art folder in word (?wha?) repair disk permissions ran for 24 hours and couldn't complete. anyway - I know there is an easy solution here - i just want to be sure i'm doing it correctly so i dont make it worse than it already is...would some kind soul please provide me step-by-step instructions to either use Time Machine to repair - or something.

I just used migration assistant to transfer to my new macbook pro. When i was doing this i needed to set up a new account/user as the one already on my new macbook pro is named the same as the one i was migrating from. With me?
What i want to do is delete the ORIGINAL account and be left with the new one, i migrated over, as the sole account (bar guest account and whatever else is usually there).
I can't seem to see any option for deleting the original account, the minus option is faded out when i highlight the Original account in "Accounts" in the System Pref. window.

Mar 21, 2012I'm having trouble setting the sharing priveleges on an external drive connected to my mac with snow leopard.My Drive is an external NTFS formatted drive. I can share the drive across the wifi network just fine if I have the guest account turned on, but I want to restrict access to certain folders using "sharing only" user accounts.I want to use SMB sharing.What I have is a folder called Movies that I want to share across the wifi with my housemates via a user account called "house" only I have another folder called "iPhone shite" (no kidding) that I want to share via a user account called "devacct" only I have set permissions for Sys Admin(Read and Write). Admin(Write Only Dropbox), and Everyone(No Access)When a user logs into the mac over the wifi, what happens is that even though I have enabled sharing for both users, and turned off the guest account, regardless of what permissions are set for each of these users, "devacct" can see the Movies folder and "house" can see the iPhone shite folder. This is not what I want. What also happens is that when I set the permissions, they do not save even though I click the lock. The extra user permissions disappear and the basic permissions reset to default.
