Sep 18, 2009So maybe what I am looking for is in the activity monitor, but I just can't find it. I always see people on here posting screen shots of their CPU usage. If they have a quad core machine then there are four columns with blue in it showing the usage. Where can I find this in OS X, or is this a 3rd party program?

The reason i ask is because i have a package that allows me 1gig of traffic a month, after which there are some stupid rates *per day* of usage and the speed will be throttled as well.

Feb 1, 2010I'm looking for an app that monitors my network usage. Currently, I use iStat Pro, but that "forgets" the "Total In" value upon reboot.
I want to monitor my network activity over a month or so, to see what my average usage per month / day is.

Jan 27, 2009it is normal for network usage to spike every so often in activity monitor when I am not using anything on my mac, and don't have any apps open? For example, if I open up activity monitor, click on the network tab at the bottom, i'll get a little spike in data received every so often, maybe every 20-30 seconds, usually 50-200 bytes, nothing big... Occasionally there will be a little red spike for data sent mixed in there too, about the same size, every once in a while.

Please keep in mind that I connect via wireless, USB based 3G modem and ethernet. But I also browse/copy/move files on my local network. So I need true internet usage not including network traffic.

Aug 18, 2010I have a fresh install of Windows XP, service pack 2 on a boot camp partition on my macbook (13" first gen aluminum case) and a Apple LED Cinema Display attached to the mini display port.
I can't seem to make the Cinema Display the primary display (the "Use this device as the primary monitor" checkbox is always greyed out in the Display Property Settings tab). I also can't shut the macbook lid and continue to use it closed (with kb, mouse and monitor attached) like I would when booting OSX.
Is there some other way to make the Cinema Display the primary monitor, so I can leave the macbook closed when booting into Windows?
Hardware :: Powerbook With Broken Monitor - Force Boot To External Monitor?
Jan 31, 2010I have a G4 powerbook with an LCD that only displays the top 25% of the screen. I've been using an external monitor with it just fine. Today, I reinstalled the OS and ran into a problem. The main OSX startup menu (you know, where it asks for your location, timezone, personal info, etc) is prompting me for information, and I can't see the forms to fill them in! The external monitor defaults to "extended" as opposed to "mirrored", and the forms are embedded, meaning I can't drag them over to my external monitor. Obviously, if I can't fill out these forms and get to the desktop, the laptop is completely useless.
Does anyone know how to force the external monitor to be "mirrored" from startup? Is there a keycommand?
OS X :: Monitor Suddenly Goes Completely White / External Monitor Goes Black
Jul 30, 2005I have been using the latest macbook pro 13.3" since April 2010. Over the last week the monitor suddenly goes completely white and the external monitor goes black. The laptop becomes unresponsive although the programmes opened continue running (e.g a skype voice call would continue without interruption although the monitor is all white).
The only solution at the moment is to press the turn off button for a few seconds then switch the laptop on again. It will then work normally until for no apparent reason this happens again.

Jul 12, 2009I have a macbook pro from 2007, and I just popped into a tagsale and picked up one 2001 Mac Studio Monitor and a 2001 Fomac Gallery monitor.. So I was hoping to use the monitors with my laptop because the small screen on this laptop is KILLING me, and i'm not yet prepared (financially) to get a powermac.. Paid $10 for both of them..
my issue right now is, the monitor's cable doesnt match the input on my compuer. I need a ACD DVI clip cable.. Now, i looked them up and the price is $100! Call me naive, but i had no clue a connector cable would ever cost that much..
So basically, I am curious if there was a different option to get this to work with my computer OR if there is a place to get a used or "extra" cable
Power Mac G5 :: Reset Monitor Resolution Supported By Monitor?
Nov 22, 2007I have a G5 Quad with an Ati x1900 graphics card running into a 52" Samsung LCD. This was working fine through a dvi-vga adaptor until I switched the monitor resolution from 1920X1080 to 1360X768 which is not supported by the monitor .....blank screen. I plugged another 19" monitor into the other output on the card and both work fine but as soon as I remove the 19" the 52" reverts back to the unsupported mode. I have reset the pram and tried booting in safe mode but that did not help me. From bootup the 52" works fine until just before the login screen, then it switches resolution......blank screen. Would anyone know where these settings would be housed in OS 10.5.1 so I can modify (delete) them?

May 21, 2008i don't know what I did, but for some reason, new windows on firefox opens on my laptop monitor (instead of my 20 inch LCD, I am running dual screens).
1. I am running dual screens, but my EXTERNAL monitor is the primary one (top menu bar is on the external monitor)
2. All applications open by default on my main monitor, except for FIREFOX.
3. I have tried dragging the firefox window back to main monitor, both in spaces view as well as normal view, to no avail.
MacBook :: Using External Monitor With New MB (2.4GHz)/monitor Sleep?
Oct 16, 2008I picked up a new MacBook yesterday and I noticed a weird issue when coming out of "monitor sleep" mode, not regular sleep mode.
When I move the mouse, the external monitor shows what you see in the picture, kinda like a TV with no signal. The MacBook screen works fine so what I just do is unplug and re-plug in the DVI plug and everything is good again.
My 24 inch Dell monitor worked fine with my M1330 and other computers so I know it's not that. Does anyone have the same issue or maybe give me some light on this?

Aug 5, 2009As said, my current set up is an HDMI - DVI cable (HDMI to monitor and DVI to adapter) and my DVI - mini DisplayPort adapter, everything is connected fine but when I turn on the monitor, it says cable not found... and nothing is displayed on the screen but on the Macbook side of things, it sees the monitor is connected (I can extend the screen and leave the screen) but other than that, it appears I cannot get an image on the monitor, pressing every button on the monitor does not work either.
Any other information that may seem necessary, let me know. I tried clearing my PRAM and clearing the power and such but nothing seems to work.

Oct 22, 2009I was surprised one day to find an inch of white line running from top to bottom on my screen. Then after a week it expanded to two inches white line, then suddenly it turned all black and I can't see two inches of my screen from the right edge. I was reading some forums and found out that I can use a dell monitor as a secondary monitor, but is it possible to use the dell monitor as the primary monitor in case the black line will spread throughout the entire iMac screen? so the iMac would serve as a stand alone processor like a regular desktop?

Jan 7, 2009Is this normal? I'm pretty sure it's not, at least the iTunes bit. I am using cover flo and I know that's supposed to increase the RAM usage but I don't even have the window open (it's in another space.) I've been seeing this high amount of RAM usage lately so I ran techtool deluxe and there was an error with the volume structure. I repaired permissions from the OS X install disk and since then the volume structure test passes but I'm still getting the unusually high numbers.

My computer has been running incredibly slow lately. I think it has to do with the disk usage as every time it has to access the disk, it slows to a crawl. I've had a huge amount of beach balling, especially when loading a new App or a new page in Safari.
Here is a picture of the disk usage. Does this look normal? Does anyone know what the problem could be?

May 31, 2009 I'm new to OS X and just had a quick question about the way that it uses memory.
I have the istat widget on my dashboard, and I've been monitoring the amount of free and used RAM. After I reboot the system, only about 20 percent of my memory is being used between the OS and the programs I normally use (adium, safari, itunes, etc.) Over the course of a couple days, the amount of used ram increases to about 50 percent, even though I'm just using the same programs.So, I'm just wondering how exactly the operating system deals with used and free RAM. Once the system uses ram for something, will that ram be reported as used until I reboot? Why does used ram continue to increase even though I'm doing the exact same things?
I'd just appreciate if someone could enlighten me on how the system uses RAM and whether I need to reboot every few days for optimal performance. I know it's still only using 50 percent (i have 4 gigs) - I'm not afraid of running out, I'm just wondering for my own knowledge.
MacBook Pro :: 40% CPU Usage?
Sep 17, 2009I have an iStat Menubar and it's constantly showing me 40% CPU usage. It also shows the same number in Activity Monitor. However, when I look at the processes running, they don't add up to 40. In fact, they only amount to around 6% or so. I did click "All Processes", but nothing was running that would cause it to be 40%.
