I have a G4 1.25 Dual Power PC and I've added a 320Gb ATA drive as the system drive. All seems fine except that in Disk Utility the drive appears RED and it says ' This drive has reported a fatal hardware error to Disk Utility" It won't let me format the drive or First aid it etc.
Anyone know how I can do a low level format and maybe try and locate the damage?
I've tried Disk Warrior and Tech Tool4 to no avail.
out of nowhere, my iMac acts all up everytime I connect an USB drive, being a flashdrive or WD 1 TB drive.
Description:
When I plug the device in, the screen dims, and an error message onscreen asks me to reboot the iMac in several languages. If the device is still connected during reboot, the reboot loops (WITH the error screen showing first every loop).
Tried with 3 different devices,... everytime - the screen appears.

Rebooted, shut down, deleted using zapit and reinstalled and still show the same error.
The last couple of days safari has been crashing pretty frequently for me. I've been using chrome no problem, but i do prefer safari, so I just googled it and got pointed to Repair Permissions in Disk Utility.
So I just opened Disk Utility, which I'm fairly sure I've never used before, and it's saying, under my HD "this drive has reported a fatal hardware error to Disk Utility. If the drive has not failed completely, back up as much data as you can and then replace it with a working drive."
It's saying it for both "FUJITSU MHZ2250BH FFS G1 Media" (I'm not even sure what that is) and "Macintosh HD".
There's nothing wrong with my computer? I've googled around and apparently this means my machines about to die?
I just got a new Mac Book for Christmas and so far I love it. I have a Windows only program I use so after some research bought and installed VMWare Fusion. The problem is when I tried loading Windows XP Professional SP2, I get a message saying: Fatal error 'ASMS' file missing. Any ideas as to how I can remedy this??? Please keep in mind that I am pretty computer stupid.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI've done this many times before, and I think it's just a failing drive, but I wanted to check and see if anyone had successfully worked around this problem before. I have a 16GB Transcend flash drive, and it stopped working last week. When I connect it to a computer, I get the message that I have inserted a disk that cannot be recognized. Disk Utility only recognizes the device, but no volumes (see attachment #2). When I try to format it, I get an error that says it Can't allocate memory (see attachment #1).
Anyone recognize this? I can send it back and get the drive replaced under warranty, just wanted to see if there were any other thoughts.
Started G5, got a question mark. Rebooted from disk. Tried to repair. Told me it could not exit and complete repair to HD. Restarted again. This time everything in utility window red. Message is Fatal Hardware error to disk utility. Back-up if not completely failed and replace with new drive.
Not great at behind the scenes with my mac. Does this mean a shop visit. Any estimate on cost to me. Had lots of Macs. This is the first to crash and burn and its not that old.

I tried removing and re-installing Office, but each time I open Entourage I keep getting the same message: the Database Daemon has encountered an unknown error. The daemon will need to quit, and Entourage may need to be force quit.

I'm using Office XP Service Pack 2 with imac OSX Install DVD version 10.6.3.
The steps I'm taking are:
Log onto my mac and use pre installed bootcamp to partition the drive. I'm using 32GB of space. Then I use my xp Prof w/ service pack 2 cd to install xp. At this time everything is working fine except for the missing drives. Then I put the bootcamp cd that came with my imac into the iMac and run bootcamp. It looks like everything is working perfectly. The imac is finding wireless internet and all the drives look like they are working fine until out of no where a blue screen pops up and states what I wrote below. There is nothing else on the screen. I'm using a 27 inch imac that i bought about 5 weeks ago new.
I received an Acomdata 2Tb external hard drive today from Amazon and plugged it in. Time Machine popped up and I declined to link the hard drive to it. I went into Disk Utility and chose the new hard drive on the left column and went to erase. I chose Mac OS Extended. I named it and hit erase. It started going, and going..... and going... and a half an hour later I knew something was wrong.
Disk Utility was not responding and I eventually had to Force Quit. Now I cannot format the hard drive. I starts and then it stops with a disk error. I tried to run the First Aid verify and repair and both stopped after a few seconds with an error. What do I do?
In my attempt to install Windows XP via Boot Camp, I accidentally inserted an SP1 disc instead of the SP2 disc that I have. The installation proceeded to the point where it does for most who attempt this: the screen where you are prompted to press ENTER. I could not proceed and therefore restarted the iMac and held down the mouse button upon start-up to remove the CD.
HERE IS THE PROBLEM:I can not boot into OS X because the keyboard shortcuts (those that might allow me to select which partition to boot from and/or reset PRAM) seem to be disabled. Instead, a reboot always ends at a black screen with a blinking DOS-esque cursor, or the prompt: "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key."
I have attempted inserting my SP2 disc at this point, to no avail. My keyboard seems to be disabled, as if the SP1 install proceeded just enough to establish itself as the boot drive without drivers for the keyboard. I've tried using all 3 USB ports, disconnecting other USB devices. Oddly, my bluetooth mouse works to eject the CD on reboot...
I'm running Snow Leopard on my new Macbook Pro. I've got a 1.5TB External hard drive that I'm trying to figure out how to format in HFS+ with Apple Partition Map. I can figure out how to format in HFS using Disk Utility, however it still does it in GUID format and I do not know how to do it in Apple Partition Map.
Googleing this for hours has lead with all kinds of information on how to go to GUID FROM Apple Partition Map but not the other way around. I know GUID is the new hottness.. but this drive will be used exclusively to connect to my XBOX 360 and it supposedly only reads HFS+ when its formatted with Apple Partition Map. (I have tried it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID, and the XBOX does NOT recognize it) I do not want to use Fat 32, (I know that that is the other major option) beacuse it limits file size.
im trying to install windows vista on my imac. when i go threw the set up when it tells me to pick my partition i do and then i have to format it to ntfs when i click the button to format i get this error:0x8004005 and it doesnt allow me to continue... i tried searching the internet for other ppl but there doesnt seem to be that much on it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI think at one point (probably when I switched from my 80GB to my 500GB drive) I screwed up and made the partition format on my drive Apple Partition Format. As I was just doing disk cloning, Leopard had no problem with this, and never mentioned anything being wrong (if it did I could have fixed it back then). However now, when I try to upgrade to Snow Leopard, it complains about this, telling me I can't upgrade and my only real option is to back up my data and fresh install. Problem being, I don't have a 500GB drive laying around, and I don't have the money to buy a 500GB drive to use once to back up all my data. It pisses me off to no end that Leopard didn't complain about this when I first did it if it was going to be a problem in the future (back when I could have fixed it) and only now it's become a problem. I guess my question is, is there any way I can get by this problem and install Snow Leopard? Or am I gonna have to wait till my friend needs to wipe his PC again and borrow his HD for a night?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am doing tech support for a family member, He is running OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 on a late-2009 27" iMac, and Time Machine is/was set up on a 2TB LaCie d2 Quadra V3 connected through FW800. He had noticed that Time Machine had not run in a while, so I opened it, and his former Time Machine drive could not be found. It wasn't showing up on the Desktop or in Finder, so I opened Disk Utility to see that it is unmounted. When I tried to mount it, it did nothing. I verified the LaCie drive and it returned no errors. I verified the disk, and it failed and returned "Underlying error: 8: POSIX reports: Exec format error". I tried to repair the disk and it returned the same thing. I am not sure if it has been working since he upgraded to Mavericks. It seems to me that the drive is dead, pre-reformat, but let me know if not. (I am not sure why it would have failed. He doesn't seem to turn off his computer, and I doubt he has unplugged the drive at any point. It may have been running for several years straight, though.) If it's dead, is the data likely recoverable?

I have got two amazing mac's at home. a 2010 8core mac pro and a 2011 17"macbook pro. both running 10.7.4 and with Hamachi installed. They work great, but occasionally on boot they have a fatal "you need to shut down..." error. corresponding to "current thread: Hamachid". i had this a few times and decided that i was done with hamachi and i have deleted it on both machines. About two weeks later i again got a fatal on startup. corresponding to drums.Hamachid!!!so i went in to library-application support and found that Logmein still had a folder with 10 files. i again deleted that folder on both macs (today).

Anyways this problem has been going on for a few weeks now so I have made a "timeline" of what happens:

I had windows vista installed but suddenly the audio decided to become faulty, after spending a day trying to fix it i realized I have a windows 7 install disc so i might as well just replace vista with windows 7. I didnt take care of vista or ever register it so it became quite a task to upgrade so i just deleted the partition and went to create a new one and just do a full install of windows 7.
I made the partition but the wrong format, so i removed it through boot camp assistant and created another, except now it keeps giving me the "back up the disk and use disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using boot camp assistant again" Now, I'd love to do this, except I have no idea what I'm doing and WHY this error has occured. After becoming frustrated I switched from my imac to my macbook pro and received the same error when trying to create a partition. So any help on exactly what I need to do would be a HUGE help. I only use windows for music production (I know, seems backwards, but I use Sony Acid and FL Studio so I'm stuck with Windows)

I wish I could tell you what that error says but I was trying to figure something else out so I chose the disk6s1 and formatted it to os extended but it seems like it is frozen. I am afraid if I force quit it will screw up the drive. This is the 2nd one I have tried, I returned the 1st one thinking the drive was faulty. Now I think I screwed up the drive when I formatted it in disk utility. I have installed 2 western digital internal Hard Drives into my Pro and have used 2 other external HDs both western digitals. If there was any problems with any of my HDs, I would open up Disk Utility and Erase them to be Mac OS Extended (My WD TV won't read Journaled drives).

I bought a new Hitachi 1tb bare drive and have been trying to format it through Disk Utility. I have it connected to my iMac system using a Newertech USB 2.0 drive connector.The new drive appears in Disk Utility, and when I go through the "Erase" tab and set if up as Journaled - the system seems to go into formatting mode for about ten minutes and then I get an error and I have to Force Quit the Disk Utility.
