just making sure I reach out to all potentially helpful forums (just posted iPod.tune forum) here's my sad story: $400 Shure earbuds went out in one channel for the entire warranty period (2 yers) I think they replaced them 3 times. I was so frustrated I recently bought the Sennheiser IE8. In less than a month the sound seriously diminished in both channels, especially the left. Yes, I can return them under warranty but my Q is: why is this happening. I'm a librarian, not using them in a sports environment. I wear the buds around my neck with the iPod in holder......do you think I keep causing these dysfunctions or what?
I have a pair of bose earbuds, while using them on my iphone 5c the sound produced is the exact same, but while plugged into my macbook the let is quieter than the right. At first the left produced none at all, but now its being a lot quieter. It doesnt appear to be the headphone.
Does it hurt the computer... If the computer is doing something (watching flash, playing a game) that turns on the fan full speed;Does this hurt the computer? There are a few games I like to play and they turn on the fan at full speed (computer gets hot too, on the bottom.)
How does the Antiglare screen look? Does it look cheap and flimsy like the matte screens on the pc laptops?This is my first Mac and i'm looking at going all out and getting the top of the line 15". I know I definitely want the HD screen, i'm just not sure which screen looks better. What about a 5400 vs 7200 rpm hdd? Is this upgrade worth it?
I have a friend who's old school first gen imac needs an upgrade. I added 384 megs of ram and a 80gig hdd.its a 350 mhz PPC cpu.can it take mac os x and how high?I have read that it can go as high as 10.3 but that seems a little high.
My computer has been running incredibly slow lately. I think it has to do with the disk usage as every time it has to access the disk, it slows to a crawl. I've had a huge amount of beach balling, especially when loading a new App or a new page in Safari.
Here is a picture of the disk usage. Does this look normal? Does anyone know what the problem could be?
Comp has been running really sluggish lately, hard time running safari with a few tabs open, fan runs at max speed 24/7 and everything takes a long time to load. Took it to genius bar, they checked some hardware, and recommended I basically format and start over.. I don't want to do that. I have a macbook pro, 2 gig of ram. Noticed that the vm size is like 130 gig, page in - 300mb, page out - 1.6mb. I typically don't run anything but safari/firefox, adium, itunes, movie players etc. I've been told that, those programs don't require that much ram, but do I need to upgrade to 3 or 4 gigs?

Ever since I upgraded to 10.6.4 I'm often getting high CPU % - it's getting annoying. It happens while watching YouTube vids, using VMWare etc., and I've also noticed Finder frequently becomes a freakin' CPU hog, bumping the % to 100%. Also, I think my MBP is running a couple degrees hotter in 10.6.4 too. What the hell
So recently my 2008 Macbook Pro has been getting really hot, even when it's not really being used. It's now too hot to put on my lap and even sitting on a desk it doesnt get any better, and I am only running Chrome and iChat. Here are the Temp Monitor and iStat Pro sceenshots: I feel like it's been getting progressively hotter over the last few weeks, but what do I know. Also, why are the fans at 4500 rpms when Im only running chrome and iChat?
Issues with my G5 DP 2GHZ. My rig has been fine since day one, but since I changed my system drive, and added a second drive, the fan radomly goes into a crazy high speed mode, and then locks up, requiring a hard shut down.
Heres the facts: *my os is 10.4.9 *2.5 gb ram *used carbon cloner to copy my original system disc to new Seagate 7200.11 1 TB drive *installed second 1TB storage drive. *both drives divided into 6 partitions. *both drives formatted OS extended [Journaled] *jumpers are in the correct position *drive firmware is SD15, the correct, and most current *drives are set to never go to sleep *fan/freeze is not task specific, meaning it will lock up with no apps open *this fan/freeze is sporadic, and has happened three times in the last 4 days.
Ive attached the system log. I know nothing about these logs, so my apologies if Ive included too much, or not enough data.
Just wondering if this is normal? Almost 30gb of VM in use? I'm encoding one of my DVDs and Handbrake is only using about 90mb of real memory while a bunch of background apps are using about 600-800mb of VM memory. Yesterday I encoded a DVD in like 20 minutes. I did a restart to refresh my memory but it's taken like over 2 hours of encoding and it's not done yet.
I've searched all over the internet but have yet to come across an answer. I love my Mac, but why is it that when I play a video in a web browser on my MacBook, (be it Flash, QuickTime, etc.) my CPU usage is anywhere from 60-80%, yet when I play the same video on a laptop running Windows, the CPU usage is always in the single digits?
I realize that video takes a toll on the CPU with integrated video cards, but it doesn't seem to have the same effect on Windows based laptops with integrated video cards. Is the CPU usage possibly just calculated differently, or is the Mac architecture somehow just really inefficient at this?
Whenever I start iChat on my new mini, it instantly spikes up the CPU usage and just sits there high. Activity Monitor says it's around 97%. I'm not doing anything in it; just starting the app gets it up there, and the only way to get it to go down again is to close the app. It doesn't seem to make a difference whether I'm online or off.
I'm new here and was already looking for any answers for similar questions but I couldn't find anything solving...well I don't have a plastic thingy an my vent and am using smcFanControl but still my temperature is on 84?C/181?F and the fan runs constantly on 6k rpm.
I bought my first Mac a few weeks ago and so far I'm very happy with my decision to switch from Windows to Apple. But there is one thing that worries me..the temperatures. Here's a screenshot from istat pro. Are these temperatures normal (especially the temperature of the power supply)?
This is one of the biggest problems i have with my macbook. It has only 2 USB ports... on a regular basis i need atleast 4 USB ports and sometimes 5... What should i do about it ?I used one of those china made USB hubs (with colorful leds) but the speed of access to connected devices becomes really slow. I need a really high speed USB hub.
Finally got round to exchanging my high-res MacBook Pro to the standard res. I had used the same hard drive, so just swapped it in. My eyes.. so much more relaxed!I know this seems like a backwards step, but I think it'll be a few more years before websites are designed with such high PPI displays in mind.Don't get me wrong, it was good being able to have so many windows open, and have so much desktop space, but I just found my eyes were tired/strained a bit from everything being shrunk down.
My late 2009 Imac (Intel) has the fan running on high almost all the time. I have done the hardware test, the fan temp checks etc, all are normal. It was suggested that I up the RAM from 8 to 16 (the limit) any ideas if this will do the trick? This computer runs excellent otherwise except for the highly annoying fan noise?
I'm looking to buy a new retina display MacBook pro. My question is that should I get the 2.3 GHz model or the 2.6 GHz model? I will be doing lots of video editing with final cut pro and playing some games Such as left 4 dead 2, diablo 3, and more. Will the 256 GB SSD be enough to hold All of my applications and games? I plan on getting an external hard drive for all the video files, so that won't be a problem. Also, does the 2.6 GHz processor really all that much better than the 2.3 GHz? If I end up getting the high end I probably won't upgrade the RAM, but if I got the 2.3 GHz model, I would for sure just to be safe. My biggest concern is the cost of the 2.6 GHz. I would like to get it sooner than later so that's why I would opt for the 2.3 GHz. Since I do qualify for the student discount, I get $200 off. But even then, the 2.6 GHz is still a lot of money. At this point I can only afford.The base model retina MacBook pro.
My back up 1.6 ghz G5 power mac is misbehaving. I moved the system to another room and when I went to boot up, the only response I got was the fans running at normal speed - and then they started to slowly creep up to a very high speed. No hard drive activity, no monitor activity. I swapped out the memory for the original factory mem - same problem - reset the switch... nothing.

The new mac pro has upped the ram and cpu specs quite a bit, but it seems apple dumped one of the most important features for people who will be buying these machines. Video editors, visual artists in general, scientific research, and anything else that doesnt require graphic cards geared toward general use.
The Quattro or maybe a firepro/firegl. When you look at the benchmarks of a quattro compared to a general purpose GPU in rendering times for visual editing its huge. Anyone have any clues on why apple would get rid of an important option for a workstation geared for media editing.
Can you buy a Quattro and pop it in? Would it work or have they dumped it, seems like a stupid move on apples part.
My friend said that PC's were better than Mac for gaming. He said that PC's had more CPU power, more and better video cards and better RAM. Is it true what he said about PC's being better than Mac for gaming?
A few days ago I found that launchd was constantly using around 14% of my CPU (via iStat), which drastically lowered my battery life and caused my CPU to reach 75 degrees Celsius and higher. Initially I thought that SL just needed to do something, so I ignored it. But it has persisted for a few days now, so I decided to do something about it.
I checked the Console and nothing appeared to be repeating itself, so what I did was use MainMenu to perform a batch of system maintenance tasks, and then left my Mac on overnight to see what Console would report. Besides hourly instances of "kernel" running "iCalHelper" and "SubmitDiagInfo", there was nothing else.
However, launchd lowered its CPU usage to about 3%, but it is still constant and my CPU is still at a constant 40-50%. Activity Monitor says the following processes are (constantly) taking only 1-4% of the CPU: coreservicesd launchd mds WindowServer disnoted activitymonitord ...and others The CPU is reported as 35% User and 20% System. But I am not running anything besides Activity Monitor.
Does anyone with a Mac Pro '08 and up run it with 2 high end cards? ATI 4870, 5870 and/or GTX 285 are the ones I'm thinking of.On my MP '09, I currently run a 20" off the GT 120 and the GTX 285 on a 24". I have another 24" coming in (the Apple LED), so it requires me to use the GT 120. For gaming purposes, I'm considering getting a 2nd high end card for the new 24" instead of letting the old 20" act as a slave on the GTX 285 (trying to minimize load on the gtx285, again for gaming).
