OS X :: Can Add More High Speed Usb Hubs ?
Oct 15, 2009
This is one of the biggest problems i have with my macbook. It has only 2 USB ports... on a regular basis i need atleast 4 USB ports and sometimes 5... What should i do about it ?I used one of those china made USB hubs (with colorful leds) but the speed of access to connected devices becomes really slow. I need a really high speed USB hub.

Does it hurt the computer... If the computer is doing something (watching flash, playing a game) that turns on the fan full speed;Does this hurt the computer? There are a few games I like to play and they turn on the fan at full speed (computer gets hot too, on the bottom.)

I am interested in adding a webcam to my desktop Imac (power pc)- Isight is no longer available- an option that I found is the Ecamm Image- but apparently it is USB and not firewire and it will only run with high speed usb- how do I know which type is on my computer? I checked system profiler but quite frankly wasn't sure of the designations.. does anyone have any experience with this camera, by the way? is USB 2.0 by definition "High Speed"?

Whenever i open an application both of the fans go to 6000+ rpm in a couple minutes give or take.Strangely web browsing doesn't cause this speed but if a youtube video is played it gets up there fast.Applications such as quicktime and logic gets up there no matter what is played.I have fan control and smcfancontrol, 40GB free, software updated, tried the reset thing (turn off, hold power button, boot), cleared printing operations. The only thing smcfancontrol does for me is it slows down the fans quicker whenever i close all my applications.

Lately my MacBook is making a lot of noise. I was at school working in Google Docs when suddenly a lot of noise came out of my MacBook and I think it's the fans.Â
When I for example watch a YouTube video the noise starts and I'v never had that before. Also when I run my Minecraft server and Minecraft at the same time it starts spinning at 6175 RPM. I know those are resource heavy tasks but I've never had that before.
I installed smcFan to monitor my fans and the degrees (C°) goes from 49° to 91° when I open Minecraft. Early 2011 MacBook 15" on Lion 10.7.3

I have a 2011 mid range mac mini and love the machine, however I have noticed a few things. First off, it seems to be a bit on the slow side when multitasking. I have the standard 4 gigs of ram installed, but running programs like MS Word and Safari at the same time, the machine seems to struggle a bit. Also I have noticed when doing a lot of file transfers via USB, the fan will kick up to high gear for a few minutes and then drop down. Is there something wrong or is this normal? I'm doing a time machine backup of 120Gigs, have safari open and activity monitor open. Activity monitor states 1.16Gigs free, 792MB wired, 961.4MB active, 1.12GB inactive, 2.84GB used. VM size is 150GB, page ins are 962, outs are 380kb, swap used is 10.5MB. Right now the fan seems to have slowed to a mid range mode of some sort and is not in high gear.

I have a late 2007 macbook pro and recently the fans have been going at extremely high speeds without the MBP being hot at all. I have SMCFanControl and iStat Pro and both of them said my MBP's temperature was around 55C though the fans were going between 4000 and 6000 RPM, I also checked the activity monitor for high CPU usage but nothing high there. I turned my MBP off for 5 minutes with a fan blowing on it just incase it was hot but when I turned it back on the fans immediately jumped back up to 6000 RPM. They're back to normal now but I assume it will happen again. Anyone know what's wrong?

Returned home this evening to hear my iMac fan making lots of noise, upon checking it was the HDD fan that was operating at 5500rpm. Both other fans were normal. Ambient temperature was 23c and HDD temp was 36c. Normally it's almost silent. It's a late 2009 21.5" base model that has never had an issue in the 23 months that I have owned it. Any idea what the problem is has it gone bad? I restarted but the problem remained I had to shut down and restart to get it back to normal. On another note how do you clean off the dark grey blotchy marks that have appeared at the top of the screen. They don't appear to be on the glass. They started in each corner now they span entire screen top.

My iMac (intel core duo) after a hard drive replacement seems to be running the fans at a high rate of speed. Usually just a few minuets after startup. Before the upgrade they were almost silent and now they are very noticeable. I need to get taken care of or just a result of installing a larget hard drive?Â

Apple has signed on to an industry-wide alliance that will see many companies, including some of the Mac maker's processor and video card suppliers, work together to develop an open format for accelerating specialized computing.Dubbed the Compute Working Group, the organization managed by Khronos Group has been formed this week and includes Intel as well as AMD and NVIDIA, both of whom compete against each other to supply video hardware for Macs in addition to other PC makers. ARM, Motorola, and Samsung are also among the involved manufacturers. The group's focus will be to develop widespread standards for calculating "heterogeneous data" regardless of whether it's onboard a conventional central processor or on a new wave of video cards that can handle some specialized calculations in addition to their normal graphics duties. Like the OpenGL standard, any future standard would be publicly documented and royalty-free.

I bought one of the new-gen iMacs last month--my first Mac! My computer will often start making a low-droning noise, and it sounds like a fan. I have iStat, and usually during this time it will say that my Optical Drive and CPU Fan are both running at around 4000rpm. This happens when there is very little CPU usage too. It's happening right now, and I only have firefox running.

Crucial lists PC4000 (500mhz) as well as PC3200 (400mhz) for my Power Mac. It has 1gb of PC3200 in it right now. I always thought that you wanted your RAM to be AT LEAST as fast as your FSB. Well...my FSB is 1ghz per processor. SO, would it be a good idea to run PC4000 RAM as opposed to PC3200? From what I gather if I mix them, it will just run the RAM at 400mhz. So would it be substantially faster with say, 1gb of PC4000 as ooposed to 1gb of PC3200 ?

I need advice choosing a wireless router. It will be permanently connected to a pc but I plan on using its wireless for my IBook G4. My wireless card is 54-Mbps AirPort Extreme WiFi 802.11g. I am looking for whatever will give me the highest speed, reliability, and least amount of interference (I live in an apartment complex with multiple networks).

I have a Blackbook, it's about 3 years old now and the fan speed has increased to a very high level. There aren't any programs running in the background, this just simply happens when I leave the computer on. I'm assuming it's because there is dust buildup on the internal parts, but it's odd that it progressed from being fine to the stat that it is in today in the matter of days. Is there a way to clean the inside? Apple technician to have a look at it?

I ran many virus scans and I am clean. Is there something that is slowing it down? I am also using wireless connection.

Dual 2ghz Power PC G5 with Leopard 10.5.8Recently had it in for a repair, not with Apple (that expired a longggg time ago) because it would only turn on intermittently. They fixed this problem, citing bad components and also replaced the broken optical drive. However when they gave it back to me it was incredibly loud, they stated that they had to reconnect a fan and that was probably what caused the power problem in the first place. I'm pretty sure though that I had disconnected it unwittingly about a week after the power problem started when I opened it up to change the battery... believing that may be the problem at the time.

My Early 2008 MacBookPro 2.40 ghz 4 gb Ram OSX Mavericks machine's keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed; it seems an exact smc resetting problem.
So i tried the 2 ways of SMC restting procedure; both battery you can move and not, but nothings changed on the situation..
On the way for removable battery; nothing changed but on the way for umremovable battery way; keyboard backlight flashes and gone, but fans are at high speed not changed. So nothing changed.

So I got my first laptop and decided to splurge and got a mac. Now it's great, works great, took me a while to get used to the OS but love my mac now. I use it predominantly for surfing and just basic but am also doing filmmaking. My friend has a macbook pro with 4gb ram and better proccessor, and we used that for film editing, but want to make upgrade mine into one as well (filmmaking laptop). I also may want to use it for gaming (starcraft), photoshop and just a whole bunch of apps and programs. Should I upgrade the ram, get it upgraded for me (get someone to put in the ram) should I even buy ram, is there anything I can do to make a faster processor? Also, my internet is kinda slow, anything I can do to speed it up? Finally, my mac sometimes lags when there's a lot off apps open so I was thinking of upgrading it. I don't have much of a budget (probably not even a 100) so I need something cheap, but don't want shotty second hand stuff. How much can I add, and what else can I do? On another note, Ive been using firefox as my default browser and have added a whole bunch off addons, any other programs I should get for firefox OR any programs I should get for my mac?

Transcoding from mpeg PAL to MP4 1080p in high quality with MPEG Streamclip seems to take a lot of computing power. I observe that the Mac Pro does not use the 12 GB RAM I have and I suspect it cannot utilise the HD3870 capabilities. Does anybody have ideas how I can do this faster with my hardware?

Whenever I use nzbdrop to download large files, my late 2008 MBP fans go nuts (4500rpm or more). As soon as the donwload is finished, they ramp down again. I find this very strange, it's not that downloading is that taxing on the cpu is it (temp is around 80?C).

My Macbook Pro (13", early 2011, Core i5 @ 2.3) started to behave weird, its fan (only the exhaust one, since it's a 13" Macbook Pro with the Intel HD integrated graphics) is running at top speed (6200-6208 rpms) with no reason at all. No system processes consuming high CPU, just idling. There's a twist to this issue, though. It only does it when I open the lid more than 90 degrees. If I get it back the fan returns to normal functioning. What I did:checked the temperature sensor values, they are finechecked for crazy background tasks, there are none, CPU usage is at max 7%it does the same thing even in safe modereset PRAMreset SMCreinstalled OS X (Lion). Updated to 10.7.4searched every discussion I could find on this matter.
The difference between this issue and others I encountered along the way is the lid opening thing.Does anyone know if getting the lid past the 90 degree mark triggers anything? The other theory I have is that there's some dust blocking the intake and when the lid is opened wide, the air is somewhat obstructed by the bottom of it.
