Hardware :: Airport Express To Gigabyte Switch?
Jun 6, 2010
Is it possible to hookup a apple airport express to gigabyte switch after router + modem connection? I still prefer wired connection to main computer and airport express does not have connection for this.
connect set up is cable modem to D-Link router which is connected to 4 port gigabyte switch.

I have a cable modem with only one Ethernet port (out). To this port I currently connect my Apple Express as my only access point. However, now I need an extra Ethernet port for a Samsung HD TV recorder (to rent movies over my provider and for software updates). Solution would be to install a switch with 5 ports, like Net gear. Now I just wonder: Will it interfere with my IP address? (Dynamic) - Or does a switch only split the signal?

my sister has a couple of components in a room that needs an ethernet cable connected directly to them. The router is in another room so I bought her an Airport Express (should be arriving tomorrow).
I originally thought she only needed one device connected and I had read that the Airport Express can be used as an extender/access point.
Now that she needs two devices, can I simply connect a switch to the Airport Express and connect both devices?

I have an Express that's being extended via WDS from an Extreme. I'd like to connect my Xbox and PS3 to the Express therefore was thinking to connect a switching hub to the Express. Will a switch work on the Express being extended and is there anything special that needs to be set-up?...cross-over cable?

I have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.
Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.
My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.
For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.
The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.

Just a question for those who have used the Airports. Can a USB hub be used to expand the number of devices the Airport can use? i.e., an external hd, a laserjet, and an inkjet.

Can it? If it can, would Airtunes still work like normal.
In other words, can I be connected to my Airport EXTREME and Airtunes would still work since the Airport EXTREME and EXPRESS are using the same network wifi-name (the Express is just extending the Extreme's range).

After configuring wireless security on my Airport Extreme base station, the Airport Express I use to stream iTunes music to my whole-house stereo system has disappeared. Airport Utility can't see it. Yes, I checked connections. All I get is a blinking yellow light on the Express. The base station works as its supposed to.

MBP 2.2; OSX 10.4.11; Airport Express 802.11n (version 7.3.2); WD MyBook 320GB (format Mac OS Extended) I'm trying to get the WD HDD setup as a wireless hard drive, but it's not showing up at all in Airport Utility (I don't even have a 'disk' tab in the 'manual setup' menu). Airport Disk Utility just says "no airport disks found." Of course the HDD works fine when plugged in directly to the MBP. I've searched apple support and these forums, but haven't found anything that works yet. All help I have found says use the 'disk tab' in AE manual setup window. What do I do without a 'disk' tab? (or how do I get one?) is this a firmware/software issue with the AE?

I currently have the apple extreme as my wireless router. It works great. I absolutely love it. I have two macbook pro's (wife and I both have one) and use it for my PS3 and Xbox 360. I started a new job and was given a free HP desktop (not my choice, but hey, it's free, so what can I say). The desktop is not wireless and I am not able to put my computer near the airport extreme because my TV already owns that territory. Today I bought the Airport express to use as a bridge (and other things in the future). I have plugged it in. I opened the airport utility using my macbook. It finds my extreme and my express. I select that I want to set up the express. I select that I want to set it up using an existing wireless network. I select my airport extreme. It tells me that it has to restart the express. I wait approximately 3 minutes. It then tells me that the settings to the express have been changed but it's not able to find it.
My main goal is to use the express as a bridge. I have the express plugged in beside the desktop and want to run an ethernet cable from the express to the desktop to allow for wireless capability.

AirPort Express doesn't show up in AirPort Utility 6.0. I haven't updated the AirPort utility on my laptop, and can find it there. 6.0 doesn't even has a scan button... I've done a hard reset of the AirPort Express, still isn't showing up.

I recently moved into a new apartment that has an Airport Express connected to a cable modem. The network does not have a password. I want to put a password on it so that not everyone in the building can use our internet.
When I connect to the Airport via the Airport Utility, it recognizes the Airport, but asks for a password when I try to configure it. I tried doing a soft reset on the Airport, but it didn't change anything. Are there two passwords for an Airport? If so, how can I bypass the second one? The "Resetting Airport Express" page at [URL] doesn't answer this question. Do I need to do a hard reset? If so, is there anything I need to know about that? We no longer have any of the original literature that came with the product.

I am upgrading from a g wireless router to an n. I have a Belkin right now that I hate. Neither I, on a mac, nor my roommate, on a PC, can get a consistent connection on it. Needless to say it's going back and I want to get an express or an extreme. I had actually bought an Airport Extreme first and it was lightening fast, but I was told that the Express was just as fast, so I went to exchange. The guy at BestBuy told me the Belkin was cheaper and just as fast, so I bought it. I would really like this to be my last trip to the store for a router. Do I need to shell out for the Extreme or is the Express just as fast if all you need is an n router?

Is there a way, in the settings, to turn off the Time Capsule's Airport wifi? I've been looking at the "Apple Airport Networks" and the "Designing Airport Networks" manuals and haven't found an On/Off setting similar to the MBP's Airport On/Off. I live in a high-rise, with a lot of wifi networks, and would like to configure the Time Capsule via wired LAN with wifi off, until it is secured with WPA2 encryption, and MAC address filtering. Also, I will probably be using the gigabit LAN connection most of the time, when at my desk.

I have an Airport Express and when I go to configure it it does not appear on the list of available networks. I have the AC plugged in and ethernet cable from my router attached to it. I get nothing! The light on the AE is green but my iBook G4 can't see it. From what I've read this looks to be a fairly simple plug and play operation.

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station and a Airport Express sitting in boxes, never being used.
Our house is already equipped with wireless connection through our DSL and Linksys router. (was in place when I moved in)
I was thinking of getting a time capsule for back up, but not sure if I could get it up and running with the Linksys or not.
Can I use my Express as an extender for using my laptop in the backyard? will it talk nicely with the Linksys?
What are your suggestions/opinions? I hate to see my beautiful Apple products sitting in boxes.

I'm looking for a repeater of sorts, similar to the Airport express, but just not as expensive.
The issue is that my macbook drops out randomly, sometimes it just goes through phases where it drops the connection about 20 times in 30 minutes.
The issue is that the modem-router cannot be moved as its phone line based, so I think my last option is a repeater. The Express seemed ideal as its a small, simple unit that can be plugged straight into the socket, which would be perfect for where I wish to place it - is there a cheaper alternative?

I have a Airport Express 802.11n (AE) early 2008 S/N 6F8437ZJZP8 working since 2 years, I use it to connect to printers an run it on wifi. Recently stopped working the green light was steady yellow. I search the forum did a soft reset, hard reset, factory default reset, etc and Is not working. Now all it does is when is connected to the outlet stays on yellow for few minutes and then shut off by it self. I even tried to connect by ethernet cable but when I run it my mac says nothing is connected to the cable and is a new one. When I tried to connect my mac can't find the devise true the airport utility. I have a mac laptop G4 12" Mac OS X 10.4.11 The airport utility is version 5.4.2 and both are up to date when I run the update application.

This is driving me crazy. I bought a Belkin F5D9050 802.11g compatible usb wireless card, and it will not recognize my airport express!
I have changed the settings in windows, and know the drivers are correct, it just won't find it as a online router/hub.
It says the network is unavailable, and there was an issue setting up wireless, it is like the windows wireless setup and the card are competing, so I cancelled the windows g setup and still nothing.
I am running SP 3 for XP, and tried chatting Belkin support and no one knows.
I installed Airport Utility, and etc and still doesn't connect.
The only flicker I had was when I went into my mac and tried creating another network, and then it signaled a device, but would not connect.

I have an 17" i7 MBP which has connection issues with my Airport Express. Sometimes, it connects on the first try, other times I have to turn the airport, on the MBP, on and off several times before it will connect. Sometimes that won't even work, so I put the mbp to sleep, wake it back up, then it will connect. Once connected, it works fine and never have any of the disconnect problems I have read about.
The other weird thing is that at the office, where we use non-apple wireless access points, I never see an issue.

Just today I received a (refurbished) airport express in the mail. I had trouble setting it up at first, but finally was able to create a network. Since then I've been having numerous problems. I've tried searching the internet and this forum for a situation similar to mine.
I have a cable modem running to the airport express via ethernet. I also have a printer plugged into it. All of my software is up-to-date (including the airport express), the light on the device is green, and I've restarted the modem, airport express, and computer. I am running 10.6.4 on a MacBook Pro (2.26 GHz).
Here are some of the problems I am having:
1. When I try to connect to my network in System Preferences, it will ask for my password. Once I type in the password and click okay, the dialog box asking for a password pops up again after having already entered it.
2. When I try to connect to my network using the Airport tab in the menu bar, it will either:
A) Tell me my password is incorrect (even though it's the correct one, which is stupid because it's a password remembered in keychain).
B) Tell me that the "Connection timed out"
3. Once I finally get connected to my network, I have to ***** with "Network Diagnostics" and "System Preferences" to get the thing to actually connect to the internet. Usually this means renewing my DHCP lease, etc.
4. Once everything is in working order (I'm on the internet, printer can print wirelessly, etc) the internet will drop out after about 5-10 minutes.

that has a failed airport card, but ethernet port still works. Can I use an Airport Express to connect to it by a 3 foot ethernet cable and still have my Airport Extreme Base Station set its IP and subnet addresses by DHCP? I don't want the AE to set the addresses, only the AEBS to set them.

My apologies if this is covered elsewhere, but I haven't been able to find a topic that answers my question - if there is one please let me know.
I would like to use my AE purely for remote speakers for itunes. This works fine if I select the AE as my network via Airport on my macbook, but then this means that I can't access my wireless modem and therefore the internet.
Any hints on how to select the AE purely for itunes and still be able to go only online?
