Hardware :: Using Airport Express In Bridge Mode?

Jun 5, 2009

My setup:

I have a router from my ISP with one cable out which goes into a hub. From there, I have connected my ipPhone, my media center, and my Airport express.

Now the media center's IP number is aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd.

The IpPhone is aaa.bbb.ccc.eee.

So the airport express should be aaa.bbb.... at least.... right (My airport is set up to be in bridge mode)?
but in fact, the Airport has the IP number fff.ggg.hhh.iii.

How can this be? I am using DHCP, so should'nt my ISP just give me one IP number, and my hub distributes the last one or two sets of digits?

I want my Airport to be a sort of an extension of my hub, only for wireless devices.

As you can see I am pretty new to networking, and must admit that I dont fully understand all this, but I thought I had it all under control.

Hardware :: Using Time Capsule To Airport Express Ethernet Bridge?

May 20, 2009

Is it possible to use an Time Capsule to connect to an airport express with a router plugged into it?

I have a small network at home, and would like to have another computer (old PowerMac g4, no wireless card) and my xbox 360 in my basement. I don't want to run cables. Is it possible to connect a router to my airport express and use it to bridge the wired computers wirelessly to the time capsule upstairs? I know it's possible to use the airport express as an extension to the wireless as a WDS but I haven't found anything online about using it as a bridge.

Hardware :: Setting Airport Base Station Into "Bridge" Mode?

Jan 7, 2010

Does anyone know anywhere online that has step by step instructions (or could provide some) on how to set up my ABS to go into bridge mode. The wireless modem/router I use is in the other room, and I would like to connect my Xbox 360 online, and figured I would just bridge the ABS and connect it to that.

I am having lots of problems doing this, and it's hard to find online how to exactly do it.

Hardware :: Setup AirPort Express In Client Mode

Aug 25, 2009

I have been trying to set up an AirPort Express in client mode so I can have some remote speakers to listen too but I have been having problems. I have everything set up and I go into AirPort Utility and choose the Express (at this time I have selected the Express as my network). I am able to choose the option to join an existing network (my AirPort Extreme) and AirPort Utility then shows me my settings and everything looks okay, but when APU restarts the Express I get an error message that says that APU can not find the Express's network. I go to the Express and it is blinking amber (not a good sign). I have the Express' MAC added to the Access Control Pane in the AirPort Extreme's preferences. I have read Apple's support article and followed it to a T and yet I still get the error message.

Hardware :: Time Capsule In Bridge Mode With Linksys?

Apr 17, 2008

So I want to setup a Time Capsule to work with a Linksys WRT54g. From what I understand, I can plug the Time Capsule into one of the wired ports of the Linksys and set it up in bridge mode for 5Ghz n speeds only. That way the Linksys still does the NAT, DHCP, and wireless b/g, while the Time Capsule does wireless n only.

Couple of questions:

1) I plug the Time Capsule into one of the 4 ports on the Linksys. Where does the other end go into the Time Capsule? The WAN port? Or one of the 3 LAN ports?

2) If I add both the Linksys wireless network and the Time Capsule n network in on my MacBook running Leopard (making the n network higher in the list), if for any reason the Time Capsule wireless connection gets lost.....will the MacBook automatically fail over to the Linksys b/g network? Assuming that both WPA passwords are stored in the keychain.

3) If I plug in a Printer or external HDD into the Time Capsule, can users connecting through the b/g connection, or connected directly to the Linksys see it?

I'm wondering if i should connect the O2 box to the ethernet port of the AEBS or WAN port whilst in bridge mode? or it doesn't matter?

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Not Forwarding Airdisk To Connected Airport Express Network?

Apr 25, 2010

I have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.

Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.

My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.

For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.

The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.

MacBook Pro :: Airport Only Works When In Clamshell Mode Mode

Aug 28, 2010

One day I was using my MBP open and external monitor hooked up. Everything was fine until the internet went down suddenly while I was using iChat.

My airport wouldn't see a network and after a couple restarts and a few resets my airport finally connected to my network. Once connected it would only issue a self-assigned IP, which obviously wouldn't work.

I was able to get around this by manually entering in the correct info but the speeds were low at best, usually pausing and stalling every minute.

After frustratingly trying get it to work, I entered clamshell mode because there was no reason at the time to have dual monitors. Once I did, viola, the airport kicked in and started working full force. It's been this way for about a month now.

My laptop is a MacBookPro5,1 with a 2.8 GHz processor and 4 GBs of RAM.

I've read that airports will have serious degradation issues if overheated and while that may be the issue, it doesn't seem to be the case.

I have smcFanControl installed and the MBP seems to be relatively cool to the touch. The fans never seem to be loudly kicking in and I have it raised on a fan powered cooling pad.

I do, though, use pretty much every port on my MBP. External monitor, speakers, both USBs, and firewire 800 are all in use, so maybe this is a resource issue or a very area specific heat issue.

Hardware :: Airport Express + WD HDD - Unrecognized Airport Disk

Jan 11, 2009

MBP 2.2; OSX 10.4.11; Airport Express 802.11n (version 7.3.2); WD MyBook 320GB (format Mac OS Extended) I'm trying to get the WD HDD setup as a wireless hard drive, but it's not showing up at all in Airport Utility (I don't even have a 'disk' tab in the 'manual setup' menu). Airport Disk Utility just says "no airport disks found." Of course the HDD works fine when plugged in directly to the MBP. I've searched apple support and these forums, but haven't found anything that works yet. All help I have found says use the 'disk tab' in AE manual setup window. What do I do without a 'disk' tab? (or how do I get one?) is this a firmware/software issue with the AE?

Hardware :: Setting Up Airport Express Through Airport Extreme?

Mar 9, 2010

I currently have the apple extreme as my wireless router. It works great. I absolutely love it. I have two macbook pro's (wife and I both have one) and use it for my PS3 and Xbox 360. I started a new job and was given a free HP desktop (not my choice, but hey, it's free, so what can I say). The desktop is not wireless and I am not able to put my computer near the airport extreme because my TV already owns that territory. Today I bought the Airport express to use as a bridge (and other things in the future). I have plugged it in. I opened the airport utility using my macbook. It finds my extreme and my express. I select that I want to set up the express. I select that I want to set it up using an existing wireless network. I select my airport extreme. It tells me that it has to restart the express. I wait approximately 3 minutes. It then tells me that the settings to the express have been changed but it's not able to find it.

My main goal is to use the express as a bridge. I have the express plugged in beside the desktop and want to run an ethernet cable from the express to the desktop to allow for wireless capability.

Hardware :: Understand "Bridge Mode" Correctly?

Mar 25, 2009

I'm trying to design a home network for a friend and I want to be sure I'm understanding "Bridge Mode" correctly...

There is an existing router that provides a wired Ethernet network to 2 computers (one of the a MacMini, shown in the pic). If an Airport Express is connected to one of the router's ports and set up in "Bridge Mode" then the wireless network will simply be an extension of the same network to wireless clients. Is that right?

In this setup, the original router provides the internet connection and doles out IP addresses (DHCP server). The Airport just passes IP addresses and internet to clients connected wirelessly. In addition, any computer connected to the network (via Ethernet/router or wirelessly) will be able to access AirTunes and Print server connected to the Airport.

Is this right?

Hardware :: Airport Express - Are There Two Passwords For An Airport

Jun 3, 2009

I recently moved into a new apartment that has an Airport Express connected to a cable modem. The network does not have a password. I want to put a password on it so that not everyone in the building can use our internet.

When I connect to the Airport via the Airport Utility, it recognizes the Airport, but asks for a password when I try to configure it. I tried doing a soft reset on the Airport, but it didn't change anything. Are there two passwords for an Airport? If so, how can I bypass the second one? The "Resetting Airport Express" page at [URL] doesn't answer this question. Do I need to do a hard reset? If so, is there anything I need to know about that? We no longer have any of the original literature that came with the product.

Hardware :: Airport Express Vs Airport Extreme

Feb 13, 2010

I am upgrading from a g wireless router to an n. I have a Belkin right now that I hate. Neither I, on a mac, nor my roommate, on a PC, can get a consistent connection on it. Needless to say it's going back and I want to get an express or an extreme. I had actually bought an Airport Extreme first and it was lightening fast, but I was told that the Express was just as fast, so I went to exchange. The guy at BestBuy told me the Belkin was cheaper and just as fast, so I bought it. I would really like this to be my last trip to the store for a router. Do I need to shell out for the Extreme or is the Express just as fast if all you need is an n router?

Our house is already equipped with wireless connection through our DSL and Linksys router. (was in place when I moved in)

I was thinking of getting a time capsule for back up, but not sure if I could get it up and running with the Linksys or not.

Can I use my Express as an extender for using my laptop in the backyard? will it talk nicely with the Linksys?

What are your suggestions/opinions? I hate to see my beautiful Apple products sitting in boxes.

OS X :: Alternative To The Airport Express?

Jun 2, 2009

I'm looking for a repeater of sorts, similar to the Airport express, but just not as expensive.

The issue is that my macbook drops out randomly, sometimes it just goes through phases where it drops the connection about 20 times in 30 minutes.

The issue is that the modem-router cannot be moved as its phone line based, so I think my last option is a repeater. The Express seemed ideal as its a small, simple unit that can be plugged straight into the socket, which would be perfect for where I wish to place it - is there a cheaper alternative?
