Hardware :: UPS Or Surge Protector For IMac?
Aug 15, 2010
I'm off to get a new 2010 27" i7 iMac and I'm wondering what kind of UPS to get.
From what I've read the type of PSU the iMacs use is supposed to have a power source that can provide a true sine wave, but I don't know if this is actual necessary for the iMacs in particular. I've been looking at this APC unit which provides a stepped approximation. I don't know if this will suit the current iMacs, but a UPS with a true sine wave gets to be extremely expensive.
If the iMac really does require a top of the line UPS are there any good surge protectors that can be had for $100 or less? Battery backup would be nice, but reliable surge protection is really all I need.

I live in south Florida, the lightening capital of the world.
I get concerned during the summer when very powerful storms move through.
I have my iMac and my PC connected to a 1500VA UPS. Nevertheless, Im wondering if it would be advisable to hook up a quality Belkin or Monster Surge Protector to the UPS, and my iMac connected to the surge protector.
Would this provide double the protection, or would it be a waste of money?

my Imac is an Intel-based 2.4ghz with a 250 gb harddrive early 2008 model and my problem is it won't turn on. I just left my imac on sleep and then the power trip at my house, my imac was plug in a surge protector, and now it won't turn on.

My new 6- core mac pro will be here at the end of the week. I'm wondering if I really need a UPS for it. I've had iMac's for the past 5 years and have always had them plugged into a surge protector which has worked when an outage has happened. No damage has ever been done to my iMac or its internal hardware. How important is it to have a UPS for a mac pro? What can happen if I don't get one? Will a surge protector do the job by itself?

I have a DSL modem with the power adapter for the modem plugged into a surge protector. The phone line going into the modem is not surge protected. (I don't really care about the modem because it's a cheap piece of equipment that came with my internet service.) The thing is, I don't use the wireless function of the modem, but I use a ethernet cable from the modem directly to my MacPro. Should I be running this ethernet cable through a surge protector first, and then plugging it into my MacPro? It just dawned on me that I wasn't doing this. And I was wondering if my motherboard or something could get fried in an electrical storm if I don't do this? I would hate for something like this to happen to my precious.

I am traveling to South Africa and have heard that the power surges are a frequent occurance. In addition to the type "M" adapter should I bring a power surge protector strip and can it have several outlets? Do I need a step down transformer as well that goes between the M adaptor in the wall outlet and the power strip? Can this also be used with other electronics like the Ipod and hairdryers?

I've done some research and there seems to be some good benefits from using both, but is it a bit excessive? I'm very interested in the moshi screen protector from the apple store. just to prevent scratches and such.

I came across aluminum view guard, and was wondering if anybody has any other suggestions?
Not sure if I should be worrying about overheating or voiding warranties. (you never know)
We have a cat that insists on cleaning windows, pictures, shower doors, tvs, mirrors, and makes attempts on my old pc screen. I think I let him have at it on the PC, but that may encourage the little basturd.

My MacBook receives a lot of use. When I leave it open, the screen frequently catches dust and is prone to smudges. I tend to clean it a few times every couple of weeks. I try to keep my machine in top condition, so I'm looking at some stuff to keep my screen protected (and cleaner) to make things easier.
I'd like some takes on this iKlear product, and this Power Support film. I believe I have one of those Power Support films for my iPod, and it does the job. Bit hard to attach though, and I wonder if it will work as well on my MacBook's screen. I guess my question is if these products will solve the problem. If anyone has used these before, are these products a good bet?

This is my 4th shaggymac screen protector and for those who are interested, i believe these are better cut because they are designed for macbook air. They are thinner than the macbooks, macbook pros at 0.6mm instead of 0.8mm like the others. I have done my research and marware has these as well, but the cost of these are a few dollars cheaper but they only come in one color gray. But the fit is just right and the screen is protected.
I would give them a look for your screen protector needs!

I had a bad power surge (USB hub that was plugged into the back of the display had the wrong power cord plugged in... very stupid mistake I know!!) take out my 23" Cinema Display. The display shows no sign of life (no power light, etc) and the brick has been tested and is OK. My local service place says that they will have to send the display back to Apple which means a minimum of $400 for repair so I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar issue that they resolved successfully? The service place suggested that Apple would replace the logic board but is there any way to test to see if this is the main issue? I have seen logic boards sold separately online but would be hesitant to buy it without know that this would fix this issue.

I'm looking for recommendations for a screen protector for a 15" Macbook Pro. I'm not looking for a cloth that goes over the keyboard, and I would prefer something that covers the WHOLE screen and maintains the clear gloss look.
I had a 1st generation MBP and didn't do anything to protect the screen and regretted it because the keys scuffed it up. I don't want to repeat that mistake.
Right now I'm just keeping the wrapping that came with the computer in between the screen and keyboard for when I close it and travel, but this isn't exactly a good solution.
Google and Amazon searches turned up exactly one that looked like it might work but I couldn't tell if it covered the whole screen (not jsut the lcd display area). Most of what turns up in search has pictures suggesting it is for the 1st gen. MBP and doesn't make mention specifically for the current models.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the NuShield screen protector specifically the DayVue type. It is supposedly anti-reflective (similar to what you would find on eyeglasses) which differs from anti glare in the way it goes about reducing the reflected light. It should reduce the reflections without making the image blurry. But I wanted to see if anyone else had tried it before giving it a go. It has a money back guarantee including up to 5 bucks for return shipping so I may try it anyways.

I've been using a Moshi ClearGuard KB protector for a while but haven't been happy with the fact that it gets cloudy over time and requires frequent cleaning to restore. I bought the Marware keyboard protector shown here because it looks nice and shouldn't have the same issue with clouding. My only issue with it is that it doesn't fit properly over the enter and shift keys, so the wording on the protector itself is not lined up with the wording on the key below. Does anyone else own this protector? Does yours have the same issue? I'm trying to figure out whether mine is defective or if it's a design flaw.

I just ordered a new aluminum macbook and wanted to get a microfiber cloth to put over the keyboard when it's closed. The only ones I can find in the store are part of a 30 dollar set that contains a bunch of stuff I don't want/need. Anybody know a good place to get one of these?

Just wanted to let my fellow macbook/pro fans out there that this palmrest rocks! I installed it on my MBP 13 and the color matching is 99% perfect and you can barely tell it's an add on. This also came with a trackpad protector. The build on this thing is spectacular, I highly recommend it. I bought it at MicroCenter for 19.99. The only thing I'm looking for now is a bottom skin/protector. I won't buy the invisible shield on basis that it's too expensive and I'm not going to hose down my laptop to put it on.
