Jul 16, 2008I just got myself a Time capsule and it taking ages to do it first back up i only got to back up 25 gig and it only done 4 gig and been doing it for about 40 mins or so.

Hardware :: Time Capsule File Transfer Too Slow
Aug 5, 2009purchased a Time Capsule today for use with my MBP. it is super super slow.. I can't believe it. How come there were so many good reviews on the Apple site? I hooked it up via ethernet cable, NOT via wireless and it's as slow as this. right now it's showing 3.4mb and 17 000 hours.

Sep 18, 2009I've noticed that in the past few months, Time Capsule has really slowed my wireless connection down a lot. And I mean a lot. Like down to 1.0 Mbs sometimes, slow enough that I can't even watch videos via Hulu because they can't stream fast enough.
Just for background, I'm running FIOS with the Actiontech wireless modem/router hooked to my TC via bridge mode. I have the wireless on the Actiontech off so as not to interfere with the TC, so there's no possible wifi interference. It was great when I first had this setup (20 Mbs up and down), back in Jan. It has been super up until a couple of months ago. At that time I did update to the latest firmware on the TC. But once I noticed the slow down, I reverted back and it's still slow. When I hook the computer directly to the modem, I get the 20 up/down as before. So clearly there is something wrong with the TC. I've already changed channels, but don't know where to go from here.
Hardware :: Very Slow Time Capsule Backup (Ethernet Connection)
Jul 23, 2009I know there have been many posts on this in the past but I think I am getting even slower speeds than most who have complained. My TC is backing up at a rate of about 1 Gig per 45 min to an hour. I have plugged in an ethernet cable and set ethernet above wireless in my network hierarchy but it appears that this is not working. This is my initial backup so I don't want to risk it by turning off my airport if it is transferring using wireless. Shouldn't the ethernet connection go much faster even though my Time Capsule is not plugged into our modem?

Dec 1, 2009I'm facing a very misterious issue with my internet connection, using a Time Capsule; If I use a network cable to connect to the Time Capsule, the connection to the internet is very slow (Maxes at 2mbit, never more). If use a wifi connection to connect to the same Time Capsule, internet is flawlessly fast, reaching well over 80Mbit.
I checked and the ip is always the same, the downloads are the same, at the same time. Even trying with 2 computers (a Macbook and an iMac) (one over wifi, one on ethernet cable) the one using wifi can download stuff way faster. If I switch connections the one using wifi is always faster.
I use DHCP for both ethernet and wifi on the same local network, all the machines can see each other, it's just the internet connection that becomes so slow when using ethernet. The local network as as fast as a gigabit connection allows. The Time Capsule has the latest firmware installed, and has no problems at all besides this internet issue.

Mar 10, 2010Anyone notice anything happening to their disk speed/transfer/access rates lately using a Time Capsule for a NAS?I currently use it to do two TM backups, and hold an iTunes store - been working amazingly well for over a year, and then a couple of weeks ago notice massive lags.The two Macs are using wireless, but internet speeds are as fast as ever... it just bogs down when you try to use a disk.So, couple other questions: Was there an airport firmware update lately that I installed incognito - and it's botched? Is there a way to install old firmware etc? Lastly, is there any way to run disk utility (or something like it) on a network drive like the Time Capsule? Maybe it's just clogged up or something?

Apr 25, 2009I did some experimenting this evening to assess data transfer rates to various storage items in my home network which uses a new Time Capsule as the router/hub.
Connected to the Time Capsule are the following:
- Mac Pro (GigE)
- Vista Machine (GigE)
- MBA (Wifi)
- Raptor Drive (USB 2)
- Time Capsule Drive (Internal)
Transferring a 650MB file between devices yielded the following results:
MP > Vista (GigE) = 288 Mbps
MP > MBA (5GHz) = 52 Mbps
MP > MBA (2.4GHz) = 43 Mbps
MP > Raptor (TC USB) = 38 Mbps
MP > TC Drive (Internal) = 38 Mbps
MBA (5GHz) > TC Drive (Internal) = 22 Mbps
It seems that transferring files to a USB drive or the internal drive on the Time Capsule is painfully slow. It took 2:20 to transfer the 650MB file to the Time Capsule over GigE vs. 0:20 seconds to another machine. What's worse, is that the data transfer speeds to the TC are a function of link speed, the slower your connection, the slower your transfer rates. It's not simply limited by some bottle-neck in the TC. It took 3:45 to transfer the same file to the TC from the MacBook Air over the 5GHz WiFi connection. When I complained about this the other day at the Apple store, the "Genius" said that it's due to QOS built into the router to ensure it doesn't kill my web browsing.

So, would I be better off with an external hard drive(FireWire 800) that I can actually partition or get time capsule which offers the wireless connection. As for the speed I guess the wireless connection with time capsule must be pretty slow?

Jul 19, 2009I am planning on purchasing a mac mini solely for the purpose of playing music - it will be hooked up to a hi-fi amplifier and speakers. All of the music that will be on the computer will be in lossless format, which is very large. I will need a lot (320+ GB?) of storage.
I'm wondering if I can cut costs by buying an old 80 GB mini and augmenting its hard drive with a time capsule. I was planning on buying a time capsule anyway, so I could save something like $300. My questions are: would I be able to stream music from the time capsule to the mac mini? Would I be able to import music from itunes directly onto the time capsule? If I hook the mini up to the time capsule via USB, can it serve as a hard-drive, even if my internet is down? Is it going to be much more worth my time to buck up and buy a new 320 GB mini?
Intel Mac :: Very Slow Startup And Very Slow Response Time When Doing Tasks?
Apr 22, 2012recently my Mac is really slow, slow on startup(took around 1-2hours), and slow on task(more than 5 minutes delayed time on every single task), I don't know what happened to it,
My Mac specs:
1.Mid-2010 27 inch iMac,
2.Original 4g Ram upgraded to 12g
3.1TB HD has got more than 400gb free space.
4.i3 processor
5.Using latest Lion(I think it's 10.7.3)
Problems:
1.Startup tooooooooo slow, take more than 1 hour
2.Extreamly slow on tasks. Without any apps opened, every single click, it turned into the 'colorful fan', for instance, open finder, it took more than five mins, and it's not only the finder, it's EVERYTHING!!!!
What I have done so far:
1.I have reduced the login items
2.I have changed the password login to the automatic login
3.I have tried verify disk permission, verify disk, repair disk permission and repair disk
4.Unplug all unnecessary items(monitor, external drive etc.)
5.Run couple of time of 'clean my Mac', get rid of all the trash.
6.Cleaned the cache
Due to the ridiculous, frustrating startup, that's all I could do, however, none of them worked.
Now I am using recovery HD to reinstall Lion from a disc, but I don't know if it'll work or not.
I don't have another Mac, I don't have backups(don't want to lose my data),that's my situation.

Hardware :: Can Time Machine Backup External Drive Attached To Time Capsule?
Mar 11, 2009I have an external 500gb drive plugged into my brand new Time Capsule. The 500gb drive basically stores my entire library of music and my iTunes points to this external drive.
Is it possible to have time machine backup all information on the 500gb drive to the time capsule, so encase the external drive takes a dump, I don't loose my entire music library? Maybe time machine is already doing this, I am not sure.

Nov 10, 2009I will be getting my new Macbook Pro in the near future and am very interested in using Time Machine to wireless back up my data to an external hard drive. I know I can use Time Capsule to do this, but also hear a mention of just getting an Airport Extreme and my own ext. hd. My question is that I have Verizon FIOS Internet and my modem also functions as a wireless router. How would the Time Capsule/Airport Extreme work with this? Is it possible? I do not believe that the Verizon router supports wireless N, and I would like to take advantage of the faster speeds. If I were to connect a Airport Extreme to the wireless router, would I then have 2 routers to choose from and just use the Airport Extreme to use the wireless N? I'm very confused as to how I could make this work.

Jan 11, 2010As my 160N series Linksys router neither has gigabit ports, usb connector or dual band networking, I am looking for a replacement.
When it comes to Apple routers I am looking at 2 options - either the base station with an external USB drive or get a 1TB capsule with the buildt in drive and worries regarding reliability.
What I like about the Time Capsule is that it is neat to have all in one, takes up less space and only has 1 plug to attach, while Iike the idea that I can just connect a bigger drive later on the base station solution.
1. Will the connected USB drive function just like the internal drive in the Time Capsule for Time Machine use?
2. Will everything be transparent to Snow Leopard?
3. In case of both units with an attached USB drive - can I control who actually can see the drive and access it?
4. Do they support this DNLA thing so that e.g . PS3 can access an attached drive??

Sep 22, 2009I recently purchased a Time Capsule to use as a wireless hard drive. I connect to the internet both through wifi and ethernet to a educational network that does not allow extra routers, etc, to be added to the network, therefore I can not use the time capsule for this wifi.
I therefore want to connect to my early 2009 MBP17unibody to both the academic internet network for http/pop3/ftp/etc while simultaneously connecting to external hard drive to store data/itunes-library/etc.
I expect this has been asked before but I can't find any threads where it has. If anyone knows it would be highly helpful. I'd prefer to connect to both wirelessly but I could potentially put up with connecting to either or both with ethernet.

Mar 11, 2012I have a MacBook Air and a Time Capsule - both from november 2011.Using Time Machine is givning me som problems.It works fine for some days, an is backing up as planned.But at least 5 times since I got the Time Capsule, Time Machine is asking to make a full Backup, and when I look in Time Machine, it says that there is no "old backup". It has been runing since november 2011.When I start a new backup, as it ask for, it takes at least 24 hours to finish - some times even longer.Is this normal? If not, what do I do?

MBP backs up everything on internal hard drive to Time Capsule at home, where we live during summer and spring. When moving to vacation home in fall and winter, MBP backs up everything to Time Capsule in vacation home.
During the 6 months at each residence, the backups work great to the Time Capsule at that particular house. However, after some time (maybe a week?), Time Machine displays an error in Notification Center: "Time Machine can't complete backup to Home Time Capsule" (when in vacation home) or "Time Machine can't complete backup to Vacation Time Capsule" (when at home).
It's obvious that this occurs because Time Machine was set to back up to 2 Time Capsules and expects both of them to be reachable. Is there a way to suppress these Time Machine errors for the time that we're away from one of the Time Capsules?
OS X :: 10.6.1 Update Destroyed Time Capsule / Time Machine Setup
Sep 15, 2009Ever since I updated to 10.6.1 I've had the following problems:
- Time Machine does not work at all with my Time Capsule. When it attempts to back up my data, Time Machine gets hung up with a status of "Making backup disk available..." and the icon in the menu bar just spins forever (the status appears in the menu bar icon's menu). I also cannot enter Time Machine; it gets hung trying to connect to the Time Capsule and I have to cancel it. Finder then takes up 100% CPU and I have to power down by holding in the power button (shutting down from the Apple menu doesn't work).
- I store my iTunes library in a folder called Music under the Data folder on the Time Capsule. When I open iTunes, it prompts me to choose my iTunes library. When I do, it starts to load the list of albums, then iTunes locks up and I must force quit it. This also causes my machine to not be able to shut down or restart from the Apple menu.
Oddly enough I can still access the Data folder from Finder with no issues. I just wanted to put this out there in case other people are having similar problems. It's pretty frustrating as all this worked fine before the 10.6.1 update.

Originally I wanted to partition the drive, but since that appears to be such a headache I'll probably make do with one partition.

Feb 10, 2010I recently bought a 500 TC and after a lot messing around i have the thing working, well near working, perfect.
The problem is, everytime it does a back up, which sometimes it has nothing to back up, it never finishes the job. In the end all i get is time machine giving me the "finishing back up" remark but the dam thing never actually finishes.
I have left it in the above state for sometimes hours just to see of it would finish and alas no joy!! Also, if i try and do anything else on my Macbook, while time machine is working, the "beach ball of death" apears and freezes my computer. Hence, everytime my Mac backs up i have to crash my computer which is annoying to say the least.
I did a lot of reading around various problems when using time machine and TC but can't find any solutions but lots of problems. TC is the worst apple product i've ever brought, it's been nothing but up hill trying to get this thing to work just like it says on the box.
I'm wondering whether its the TC or simply that time machine doesn't like my computer for some reason.

Apr 5, 2008My MacBook Pro locks up and shows the message "Please reboot your computer by holding down the power button" every time that Time Machine tries to run a backup. I turned off Time Machine and no more crashes... Sorta makes my 500 Gig Time Capsule useless.

Apr 20, 2009I've been having a few problems with my TM backups since I got my new iMac (my MBA is working fine).
Something strange that I've noticed is when I enter into Time Machine (the program). Sometimes I see a bunch of my backups with times and dates where I can scroll through the different saves and restore if I want to. Other times though when I go into TM I only see the current save point. I can't scroll back and it only says Today on the right without any other save points. It is almost like I've only done one TM backup.
The other strange thing that I see is if I look at iStat. Sometimes it shows two Time Capsule hard drives and other times it shows only one. If I choose to change disk in Time Machine preferences the Time Capsule is listed twice. I don't think it has anything to do with a partition (which I never did) because both drives show the same used and free info (something like 377 free of 461) and I only have a 500GB drive.

Apr 23, 2010I started my backup over 24 hours ago and after it completed its 130GB backup, it has now continued backing up endlessly incrementing the xxGB of xxGB without end. I stopped the backup and it then began at 140.9MB to backup. Once it reached 149.9MB it continued; displaying 149.9 MB of 149.9 MB. It is currently at 502.4 MB of 502.4 MB. I am using Snow Leopard. Has anyone seen this happen before? Or know how to resolve?
