Feb 23, 2008I have the possibility to purchase a Macbook Air 1.8 80GB HDD, awaiting a 128GB SSD to be released down the road. Can I have these drives swapped in the future?

MacBook :: Swapped Out Hdd And Cannot Install OSX?
Oct 29, 2010I swapped out the old hdd on my old black 2.0ghz macbook to a new one and tried to install OSX 10.5.x but it did not work. I forgot the black macbook shipped with OS-TIger and I do not have those discs anymore. I only have my Snow Leopard disc and the 10.5.x disc.
What can I do? Can I use Time Machine and my external HDD to install the os on the new hdd?

Jun 12, 2009If your 14 days or under on the return policy and bought from Best Buy, check your local stores. Mine got theirs in yesterday. Went over there this morning and exchanged my UMB 2.0 for the 13" MBP 2.26. Didn't get charged a restocking fee and ended up owing only 106 bucks (I went in on Wednesday and price matched down to 1099 which is why I owed money on the exchange).

Jul 25, 2009I just dropped in a WD Scorpio 7200 320GB drive in my mid-2009 mbp. I successfully cloned my previous drive. It took forever to boot the first time and every subsequent time. It takes hours to install the os fresh after wiping it. Not at all how I expected the swap to go. What do you all think? Swap it out for another because this one is a bad egg?
I have done a guid partition and it is formatted in mac os x extended and journaled.
When i boot from my old drive, now in a usb enclosure, everything is fine. However when I access the new internal drive it hangs and just doesn't play well with it at all.

Feb 22, 2010I'm about a year into the Mac platform after switching from pc. My first Mac was a 17" MBP and I'm looking to get a Mac Pro. Like most I'm waiting to see when the new ones will come out. I have always been curious and just wanted to know can the processors be swapped out like on a pc? I realize this involves mother board issues and whatnot but the processors we're waiting for are the same ones that can be purchased by anyone. I always wondered why someone with say a 2008 Mac Pro could not just simply swap out the processors since the tower itself is still the same. Again, I'm fairly new but just was wondering if anyone knew the answer (s). Thanks again for any insight as I'm trying to really learn and understand the Mac system under the hood so to speak.

Tough deal to pass up, basically $269 for the computer when you compare the price of the new CD.
Since the C2Q's are socket compatible, and actually some of them might have a lower TPW will they work?
I just happen to have a few C2Q's sitting around, the Q9500(2.5ghz) and a Q9550(2.83ghz).
Heard it should work but has anyone tried it yet and if not, why not?
OS X :: Swapped HDD - Now Password Not Working
Sep 12, 2010So I had 4GB 15" MBP that I'm going to sell and bought a 2GB 13" MBP. I put the "old" hard drive from the 15" into the 13" and it works like a charm. Except it doesn't recognize my admin password as correct. I know I'm entering the correct password - is there any way to resolve this short of re-installing the OS?

Apr 4, 2008I had a difficult time finding a guide on how to do this, so I just tried to figure it out the best I could. I originally had a 320 gig standard drive called "Macintosh HD". I ordered one of those new 640 gig WD drives, and put it in slot 2.
I went into Disk Utility, went to "restore", and put my 320 gig as the source drive and the new partition on the 640 (which I also named "Macintosh HD") as the destination, and clicked "restore".
An hour or two goes by, and it says it's done. I turn off the mac, pull out the first drive (the 320) and it boots fine into the 640... I tested Mainstage, Safari, and basically everything seemed to be there. I changed the desktop background so I could tell them apart, put the 320 back in, and when I rebooted, it booted off the 320.
This time I went into System Preferences and changed the startup disk (I guess at this point I should have named the partition something different) and it booted up on the new 640 again.
I'd like to format the 320 but am terrified if I did this all correctly. I plan on using it for boot camp. None of the links I found suggested doing it this way, they all talked about third party utilities.
Anyone here care to help me out? Can I go and format that new drive safely? Is there something I can do to preserve the data (just in case) but take away the boot capability?
OS X :: Keyboard Keys Swapped Around?
Apr 19, 2009The a, q, w and z keys on my keyboard have all swapped around (not physically, but when I press 'q' an 'a' is typed etc), none of the numbers and punctuation keys are in the right places either and I have no idea why.
Does anyone know how to fix this (sorry, I can't find where question mark has gone)

Oct 22, 2009I am fairly new to macs and I am having a problem, my Mac Pro keeps restarting. I had a quadro FX 4800 video card on it, but it apperently was useless for gaming ( had problems with all the games i tried), so i swapped it for a NVIDIA GeForce GT 120. I was instructed that once the card was put in i would just have to start up the Mac and download the drivers. But every time i try to start up it just keeps teling me over and over the mac has to restart. Is there some way to fix this? Would having the Mac dual booted with Windows vista ultimate be a contributing fact to this problem, as that starts up but the display is weird and the graphics card doesnt seem to be registered on the system.

Sep 14, 2008Yesterday I swapped the stock cooler of my radeon HD3870 for a zalman vf1000. Since then, the GC doesn't work anymore (even with the stock fan back). So after a night of check, test and prettty much everything, I'm pretty sure my GC is dead. What I want to know it could be a short circuit? I'm a good mac user and I already did that on others cards (X1900 with an accelero for example.) I talked with xlryourmac and he can't see. I really want to find out a plausible explanation, because I'll probably buy another GC et wouldn't want to do the same mistake twice. Mar 2, 2010I'm at a loss on this one.
I've swapped my iMac's optical drive twice since it originally failed three months out of warranty. My first replacement was a UJ-875. My latest replacement was a UJ-225 Blu-ray reader. Here's the thing:
When attempting to insert discs, both drives failed to "grab" it and pull it into the iMac. The bezel of the iMac is so thick that I would lose the disc inside without the optical drive actually taking hold and loading the disc. With the tip of a pen I was able to push the disc in another few millimeters and it would grab and load up without issue. Both drives functioned flawlessly once I got the disc in there.
So...What is Apple doing to customize their drives so that they "grab" earlier rather than later? Is this a mechanical adjustment that can be made on the optical drive? I'm rather surprised that I've been unable to find anything like this on the web.

Jun 28, 2010So last December my laptop got smashed and everything works except for the backlit screen. In fact I can still use this laptop it is just extremely hard since the screen does not light up. The person that smashed it ended up buying me a new laptop so I have this beat up (and I mean the shell is destroyed) laptop with quite a lot of functioning parts.
Now a few weeks ago my girlfriends Grandad spilled a beer on his brand new 2010 Macbook. The logic board is shot so it is almost cheaper for him to buy a brand new laptop.
Would it be possible for me to take the logic board out of my 2008 Black Macbook and put it into his 2010 White Macbook?

Oct 27, 2010By far the most interesting benchmark trend coming out of the latest Macbook Air tests is that of the 320M GPU - is this thing somehow clocked differently than in the Macbook/Macbook Pro?

The latest Macbook Pro 13" 2.4 Ghz gets 33 FPS in Call of Duty 4, whereas the Macbook Air 13" (using the same 320M GPU) gets 40 FPS. Even the 1.4Ghz 11" gets 37! So obviously we're not talking about a CPU limited game - the only explanation then is that the GPU in the Macbook Air is clocked differently than in the 13" Macbook Pro, no?

Again the Macbook Air clocked at 2.13 ghz is beating the 2.4 Ghz Macbook Pro in World of Warcraft and Portal! And in WOW the 11" 1.4ghz still manages to beat the 2.4 Ghz 13" Macbook Pro.
Anyone have any additional insight into this? Anand did a terrible job of testing these for gaming performance, unfortunately, so he may not have even noticed this trend.

The main problem I have with my current MacBook is that its heavy - I need something lightweight to easily carry to school and class for note-taking and such.
How is the Air better or worse, and would I be losing anything significantly by replacing the 08 plastic MB with a MBA?

Jul 11, 2009I just upgraded my daughter from last year's MacBook to a new 2009 MacBook Pro (my mother will get her old one) by cloning the drive using SuperDuper. Everything works fine except it doesn't detect the audio hardware in the OS. I see that the new macbook pro has different audio hardware according to system profiler. Is there a way to copy the driver off the install DVD or should I just go ahead and reinstall everything.

Apr 24, 2008I just bought a macbook as a replace for my five year old iBook. I was planning on purchasing a second power adapter. I like the size and more rugged connector on the Macbook Air power adapter.
I have searched around and it sounds like the Air adapter will work with a MacBook but I am not completely convinced. I understand that this adapter will only charge or power the unit but not both.
Has anyone tried their Air adapter on a MacBook? Could an Air owner tell me the voltage and current rating (outputs) on their adapter?

Hardware :: Macbook Vs Mini For Desktop / Macbook Power Usage / Operation Closed
Apr 15, 2009I'm putting a computer in my kitchen that anybody in the house can use (kids & parents). It will be hooked up to a 24" LCD and also act as a small file server, dvd player and perhaps eyetv dvr.
I like the mini because it is small (can hide in the cabinet where spills won't get it), is cheap and uses only 13W when idle. But when I think down the road, 4 year old laptops seem a lot more useful than 4 year old mac minis. So I'm a bit torn.
So my questions are:
- Does anybody know how much power the macbook uses when "idle" (just running finder).
- Can the macbook be run with the lid closed? (I know old powerbooks used to vent hot air through the keyboard.)
(Then again, I have the computer in the kitchen so I can watch my kids on the computer. In 4 years they'll be 5 years old and probably want a laptop they could have in their own room - exactly what I want to avoid. And I'll probably upgrade my macbook pro by then anyway.)

Oct 31, 2010I have a late 2009, white unibody MacBook which is 7 months old, and I have been noticing that the battery life is getting less and less, and am rather confused.I reset the SMC as per Apple instructions, and then followed the battery calibrating guide to the letter from apple.com, and tonight it seems to have lasted... 3.5 hrs! Hardly the quoted 7 hours that Apple spec, and I am simply doing light web browsing, nothing else.Am I doing something wrong? The machine sits connected to magsafe 90% of the time, but I cannot envisage that would cause any problem, as it knows when it is charged, so afaik no more current can get to the battery to damage it
