Hardware :: How To Transfter Data From My Windows Hard Drive To Mac?

Mar 30, 2009

Mac newbie here (recent convert) After my old Windows computer died a horrible death (motherboard), I've decided to give this Mac thing that I've been hearing so much about a shot, so I got myself a Macbook. Been loving it ever since!!!The only problem is: I can't find a way to transfer data from my old Windows hard drives. I got a Universal SATA+PATA IDE HDD Hard Drive to USB 2.0 Adapter, but it doesn't seem to work - when I connect my hard drives to it, Mac doesn't see it as external device.I thought this was an issue with a filesystem being incompatible, so I installed Parallel Desktop, and tried connecting them to Windows virtual machine - same result.

Windows On Mac :: Get Back Lost Data/lost All Hard Drive Partitions After Windows Update?

Jun 26, 2010

I just booted into Windows and saw that there were some Windows Updates available and it asked me to reboot the computer however it failed to boot into Windows. So I restarted and tried to boot into OS X instead, but that didn't work either.

So I put in the OS X install DVD and checked out Disk Utility. Turned out that all my partitions where screwed up. There were 3 partitions listed as Windows_ldm, with incorrect sizes (I had 4 partitions before).

Long story short: I'm now reinstalling OS X and I lost everything I had on the drive, I think. I'll try some restore software once I've gotten OS X installed.

A little pissed right now... How the heck can Windows F up the entire drive?

Hardware :: Recover Data From Dead Lacie Hard Drive / Unable To Mount Hard Drive

Sep 6, 2009

Today I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.

Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.

Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.

I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.

OS X :: Recover Data Fom Hard Drive / External Drive Stopped Mounting

Sep 4, 2009

So, I've been searching the forums, as I just had a 1TB (well actually a dual 500GB) external drive stop mounting and start clicking on me. I'm trying to find a way to recover files, and I know I've seen a lot of posts on DriveSavers, which. I was searching around, and I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a company called "OneWorld Data Recovery." It was something I stumbled across, but I can't find any reviews, or nail down anybody who's used it.

Clearly, this seems fairly suspect, but I figured I'd check and see if anybody had ever heard of it or used it. Thanks!

MacBook Pro :: Backup Data On Hard Drive When Time Machine Is Setup On External Drive?

Sep 5, 2014

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

Intel Mac :: How To Transfer All Data From Old Internal Hard Drive To A New Internal Hard Drive?

Feb 10, 2012

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one? I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

OS X :: How To Retrieve Data From Old Hard Drive

Jul 9, 2010

On my G4 I noticed the ? momentarily on start up, so I was going to boot from the disc to make a repair. The icon for the disc wouldn't come up on the desktop. Put a music CD in, didn't work. Was going to try to boot from 9.2 and now all I get is the floppy with the question mark. I've tried to get it to boot from the CD, (no luck) tried all I know to at least get it to boot up somewhere without luck. Broke down and bought a new imac, (it was time) and tried to retrieve my files and such from Mozy, but some critical ones are missing. Is there anyway to retrieve the data from my old hard drive, say take it out and go to the Apple store later today?

OS X :: Retrieving Data From Failed Hard Drive?

Sep 14, 2010

My girlfriends HD failed the other day, with a lot of her portfolio pictures. She has a new HD and the computers working fine. My question is this - on a simplistic level, could transferring the failed HD platters to a new enclosure work as a means to retrieve the info. So if I buy I cheap working drive of same size/manufacturer - say 20 gig. Take it apart and remove it's platters. Then replace them with her failed disk's platters (160 gig). Would I stand any chance of retrieving the data? I really can't afford the $600 ish I'm being quoted to get it done professionally.

OS X :: Recover Data From Initialised Hard Drive In 10.1?

May 6, 2009

A friend emailed last night saying he had a drive that had been 'acidentally formatted' (that's a lot of accidental mouse clicks if you ask me), that it took 2 seconds to format so it should have not actually wiped any data on there.

I've used Disk Warrior in other circumstances but never tried on an initialised drive. Nor would I know how to get a copy of such old software.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what software from that time might recover the data?

OS X :: Updating The Hard Drive Of A MBP And Transferring The Data To New HDD

May 20, 2009

I have a MBP which is about a year and a half old. I have begun to run out of space on my MBP and am considering updating the hard drive to an SSD. However, I do not want to lose my data in the process and would like everything to be the same once transferred over.I understand that changing the Hard Drive will void my warranty and I am okay with that. Here are my questions and concerns:My MBP has both OS X and windows (via Boot Camp). I would like to retain the data of both partitions exactly as is on my new hard drive. So to do that, what do I have to do? I imagine that I need a special piece of software for both OS X and Windows to clone my hard drive. What software do I need? Then after cloning the drive, what would I have to do?

OS X :: Hard Disk Drive Data Recovery

Jul 18, 2009

first off, long time MacRumors reader, finally joined the forum now in search of some aid. There are some other threads on a similar topic I know, but I was hoping for some So, the Hard drive in question is a Western Digital 5400rpm 320gig purchased from Amazon about 8 months ago, now the Hard drive has decided to die. I saw some early signs, but did not realise that the drive was in that bad of a condition at the time. Now, when attempting to boot into Mac OS X I get stuck at the Apple logo, with the little wheel spinning infinitely. I had a boot camp partition which worked, but could not help me and is no longer an option either. I tried using the Leopard boot disk, but Disk utility didnt do anything for me in terms of recovery or repair, I attempted to use the terminal to make an Image of the drive on an external, but it fails about 10% through, I'm assuming from corrupted data.

OS X :: Cannot Copy Data To External USB Hard Drive

Aug 17, 2009

Macbook pro 13' running 10.5.8 has intermittent issues with usb 2.0 mass storage drives but not jump drives. Here is the issue, my gf just got a brand new mac book pro 13'. This is great for her no more asking to use my unibody macbook. She plugs in the drive I have used for a very long time with my mac my pac etc. with not a hint of issue. The drive shows up copy's stuff off ok. However when it came time to return the data back to the drive it gets about 10% through and just hangs. Here is what I have done. I first thought ok might need a reboot. Then I went with the ok I will check her disk for issues. This is a 3 day old mac book by the way. I found random permissions errors with quick time which has never been run. After the fix the issue goes away for that boot.

The issues seems to come back after a re-boot or so. I go ok enough of this I format the mac with the system disk, then I update to the latest updates from apple. Plug in the drive and still having issues. Run the permissions repair same issues exactly format to format. I have also run the deep test off the system disk the machine checks out through that so I have ruled out ram on her system as a possible culprit. I am at a loss on this machine. I have gone so far as to format the external drive replace the data from my network server and try that. Still no luck. On my box there is no issue it time machines great it copy's data like a usb 2.0 drive should.

OS X :: Backing Up Data For A New Hard Drive Installation?

Feb 11, 2010

I've been looking into this a lot the passed few days, but there are a few answers I just can't find.

First of all, I know how to physically take apart my mac and put the new hard drive in. I have the new hard drive, and the tools I need.

The method I chose (before I looked into how to xfer data using macs) was to use time machine to make a backup of my entire hard drive on an external, which I did successfully.

However, before I take apart my mac and instal the new hard drive, there are a few things I want to be clear on, and I can't find the answers to.

Will I need the leopard OS disc for the new hard drive? Or does time capsule back up the OS as well, and give me some sort of prompt (doubtful)?

I have the pre late 2008 macbook pro, and it came with leopard. I haven't upgraded for several reasons I won't get into. My question now is, should I have the leopard OS disc? SHouldn't something like that have come with my mac? I ask because I feel like I should have one, but I don't remember getting one and can't find it anywhere. I always keep things like that.

And lastly, if I don't have the leopard OS disc, what do you think is the cheapest way for me to back up and xfer my data?

I have external hard drives, my new hard drive, and my old hard drive. Would it be cheaper for me to buy one of those things that directly xfers the data from one internal drive to another, or to buy another leopard disc? Is there a way I can just order the leopard disc I should have already for cheaper?

First thought was time machine, but will this work? I mean, if it worked with time machine on a new hard drive it would be very easy to share shareware program with friends. Is it possible somehow? I've heard alot about Disk Warrior but it's a company computer so I won't be allowed to use any software we don't currently own.I was reading freezing the hard drive would help the contraction of the materials and causes whatever is stuck to become unstuck. So I left the hard drive in my car last night in zero degree weather but it didn't help. It still doesn't mount. Any ideas even if they are crazier than putting it in the freezer .

Mac Pro :: Recover Data From A Hard Drive With Bad Blocks?

Mar 27, 2012

An external hard drive, 4TB Iomega...connected via eSATA cable...had a power outage and the drive won't be read by OSX now.  (Yes, it was on a surge protector and no I did not have a backup.  I was actually preparing for the process of creating a backup when the power went out!)  Anyway, I have tried using Data Rescue 3 and DiskDrill to try and recover data from the drive.  I can recover the first 1/3 of the drive, but it ejects when either app tries to access the bad block.  how/what software to use to recover the data?  I know there are programs that will avoid the bad block but I've only found them for Windows.  Are there any that will do such a thing in Lion? I can not afford a data recovery service.  Trying to do this on my own.
