Unlike the other external HDD that I built years ago, the LaCie drive does not spin down even when it is not being accessed. This is annoying because my iMac runs silently but the LaCie drive is quite loud with the HDD spinning.
Is this normal for an external HDD? How can I make it spin down when it's not being used?
Having said above, the LaCie drive does spin down when I put the iMac to sleep.
So my girlfriend boss wanted me to fix her computer. So I brought it home turned it on, and it didnt chime but it booted to the gray screen with apple logo/ slashed circle/and folder with a "?" So I made a USB Mac OS x bootable drive (FLASH) held down alt (try using a windows keyboard its fun) was able to select option and install a fresh copy. all seemed well was running really hot so I poped of the screen. HOLY MOLY! this thing is CAKED with dust, and I am not kidding it has literally piles of dust. So I ran updates, and did firmware updates. Turned it off for the night. Â
The next morning I went to radio shack and got Dust remove spray, opened it up made sure I was carful taking off the screen, and blew the sucker out. now its NICE and CLEAN. then i made sure I plugged everything in and turned it on. Drive spun like normal, Optical checked for a CD, and fans are also running normally. but no chime, no nothing stays as silent as normal but doesnt budge, it is like it hangs. Â

I have two user accounts. On my one account (the main one) Safari works fine but on the other account just today it started loading real slow. then once it finally pops up with the home apple screen and you click anything, the wheel spins and spins for like 3 min then safari quits unexpectedly. When i click to report to apple and then send it, again the wheel spins for a long time and then it says it was unable to send to apple please check internet connection and try again. But, there is nothing wrong with my internet connection because if i switch to my other account internet works just fine!
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I have an external hard drive hooked up to my MBP via USB. I've noticed that every now and then (maybe every half hour or hour?) the drive spins up. It's actually really annoying, as the drive makes a loud sound as it spins up.
I can't figure out why it does this; the drive spins up and then goes back idle. Time machine is DISABLED, spotlight index on the drive is DISABLED as well. I use the drive solely for storing movies/music. There are NO applications installed on it. The only apps I have open are finder/preview/safari/firefox/adium/itunes. My guess is that some process is trying to access the drive for whatever reason now and then.
I have a LaCie 320 GB external hdd (USB 2.0) that worked perfectly until last night. Now it won't mount when I connect it to my computer, nor can I see it in Disk Utility. Disk Warrior can't see it either. I tried connecting it to my roommate's MBP with no luck.
It spins up just fine and doesn't make any clicking noises or anything like that, so I feel like there might just be some hope yet; I'm thinking it might just be a faulty USB cable or something, but I don't have a spare one to try it with.
I knocked my external off the desk. Smash, buggered that hard drive. So I bought a new drive, made sure it was the same drive, installed it fine. But it's not mounting. The blue access light on the front just flashes continuously, but the drive won't mount so I can format it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedA few months ago I bought a new LaCie "Little Disk" external 500 GB HDD. Has Firewire and USB power.
Formatted for both Windows and Mac (Fat32). Everything was going fine. One day the disk would not eject. That is when the problems started. I had to manually remove the disk without ejecting.
Having done this with my other LaCie external HDD without any future problems (it would always remount) I didn't think anything of it.
Since then, the disk will not mount on either the Mac or the PC. The disk will not mount using the Firewire or the USB power connectivity even though the blue power light is on.
When I open Disk Utility with the LaCie plugged in, Disk Utility crashes. When I open Disk Utility before the LaCie is plugged in and then plug the LaCie in afterwards, it crashes.
I tried plugging the LaCie in before booting my MacBook to see if that worked, but that method prevented the MB from booting at all!
Contacted LaCie about this but have yet to hear back. I'm convinced that this can be solved cleanly without any data loss. Suggestions?
I must be doing something wrong, as it does not make sense. I am using laCie external hd to store my image files. I now want to delete some of them on laCie, ie free some space, and store anew other files on it. When I do delete/move to trash files from laCie, the total usage space/free space won't change, though I am no longer seeing the folders/files just deleted.
Do I have to do it in a different way? I am on Powerbook G4, OSX 10.4.11.
I have a new-ish Mac Mini and a MacBook Pro. I've been slowly migrating my Pro files to the Mini for some flexibility/stability. I've had the LaCie HD hooked up to the Pro FOR EVER. It's only ever been on a Mac--never a PC.
The LaCie seems to be fine.
However, on the Mini, it's suddenly mounting (both partitions--don't ask, I made them long ago and can't recall why) with a little lock at the bottom left of the icon. When I Get Info and look at permissions I have to unlock it and all/any users listed are noted with "Custom" preferences.
I can't R/W--I get "The folder "Stuff" could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges.
I'm trying to re-install mac osx from lacie external usb dvd drive. But I've realised it can't be done. Is there a way around this. At the moment I'm trying to copy the contents of the 2 mac osx install cds on to my HD using Disk Utility.
View 7 Replies View RelatedFirst, the drive kept triggering a "your external device may have been disconnected improperly" message. That despite repeated erasing of the disc and restarting of the set up a Time Machine backup usinig this 500GB USB2 drive with its own power supply. Finally, I placed the drive on its fronot panel and it stopped disconnecting. Then, it started the backup. It is now 9:30 in the morning. I started this backup at 9:30 last night. so far it has managed to accomplish 23.79 GB of a 64.45 GB back up.

I hooked it all up. MacBook sees the external drive. I get a Lacie set up icon on the desktop. Click it and I get password, do that and I get a bouncing arrow icon on the lower tool bar, then it goes away afte about two seconds...then nothing. This is for my MacBook Pro.

The lacie model that I have is the 500 gb one with the 2 firewire ports and one usb. When you connect it via usb you have to plug use 2 ports one for power the other for info. I'm trying that in the mbp retina and is not recognizing it. It doesn´t appear in the disk utility nor in the system info under the usb ports.

I have what I thought was an external FW HDD made by LaCie. In checking a backup log, I noticed that my supposedly LaCie HDD is actually a Hitachi drive. Does anyone know if LaCie actually manufactures any hard drives or do they just put other drives in all their enclosures?

I am able to brings things from my seagate to the desktop but I need to upload the files from the Lacie to my seagate. Quicktime movies are on the Lacie and I need to get those movie clips to my seagate so I can use my PC to edit.

It's the one designed by Neil Poulton, is a sleek black box with a blue light on the bottom. It has a USB 2.0 input and an on/off switch in the back. I'd like to know which manufacturer really made the drive inside the LaCie box. I know LaCie uses different manufacturers, but I can't find out any information anywhere about which manufacturer's drive is inside this model, or other LaCie models in general. I guess the same can be said for many other hard drive companies. Heck, even Apple uses Hitachi. That's what came inside the Mac Mini (a 120GB drive), though I now have a 320GB drive inside.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI'm on an early 2008 mac pro - used to be on a Powerbook G4. I have a 300 GB LaCie d2 Extreme external HD connected via firewire 800. Both are in 10.5.2. While on my powerbook, the drive behaved normally - fell asleep after no use, then awakened when I needed to access something. On my new mac pro, the drive behaves strangely. I only use it for backup, so it's only accessed once a day. The rest of the time I do not use it. When it's not in use, the drive sporadically wakes and sleeps. I've tried to pinpoint the cause to no avail.
I've tried all the usual suspects: browsing the forums, checking the "hard disk sleep" preference in energy saver, switching the firewire 800 cable with usb and firewire 400, watching activity monitor to see if there's a program accessing the drive (haven't found anything, but that doesn't mean it's not there). None of it works.
I had just purchased a Lacie 500GB xternal drive for my G5, I also have another xternal drive hooked up which is a Western Digital. I copied everything , music video files ect... onto the Lacie drive to clean up the WD drive, now when I went to clean up the new Lacie drive the files I deleted are gone but it is not freeing up any space. I went to disk utilities and re-formatted but it wiped it clean, is there such a way to delete a few files here and there and gain the space they were taking up without going this route?

So I formatted it on my vista laptop and put stuff like my documents music and videos on it as I am getting a macbook pro next week. I've gone to my mates who has an iMac this eve with my hard drive and realized as I formatted it on vista its in read only mode and i cannot edit it. I have put all the files i need on my mates leopard imac so I am happy to erase the hard drive and format it to mac.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased two Lacie Rugged hard drives, a 500GB for client use (meaning, it is given to clients to review raw footage and then given back to me where I then make edits.) The 500GB is calibrated at 50% Mac usage and 50% other and it has been worked out fine thus far. The other hard drrive is a 2TB Rugged XL Hard Drive has not been used due to the pop up I get when clicking the LaCie Setup Assistant which reads "You can't open the application LaCie Setup Assisstant because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."

2.) How do I fix it?

View 9 Replies View RelatedTime machine is having problems backing up to my La Cie drive. It will start and then show the progress, but it stalls at a very low #(256 kb, for example).
Left it to do its stuff overnight and it never budged. Pulled this off of the console (after reading some other posts). Not sure if this is associated w/the problem, though.

This error was reported pretty much every 4 seconds.
I erased and reformatted (mac os extended, journaled) the La Cie but that did not seem to work.
I have had a Lacie 500gb external hardrive formatted and used with time machine on my macbook pro for about two years now. I haven't had any problems until recently. When I plugged it in, it wouldn't mount. I opened disk utility and it was visible but showed as unmounted and I wasn't able to mount them manually from there.

I have used the disk for a number of years - all appeared to work fine - I am now backing up my data and only get Very slow transfer speed using firewire 800 - 2 hrs to transfer 1.36 Gb. Disk is connected to a Dual 1.8 Ghz Power PC G5 with firewire 800 - another d2 disk is connected to it with firewire 400 and I have just connected a Maxtor disk using firewire 400 to that. I have tried Updated the firmware (it did require it), tested the device alone on both 800 and 400 connections both slow. Restarted everything and used disk repair to check and repair the disks - repaired permissions on the startup disk.
Connected all the devices together again | LaCie 800 - LaCie 400 - and Maxtor 400. It sends data to all the other devices fast (~ 3 min for 1.6 Gb) through the LaCie 800 disk connection!, but does not send data to the LaCie 800 fast at all. Tested the other devices alone as well - they are all fast. Have also performed a TechTool Pro Ver 4 test on the the disk (Disk type ST325082 3A 232.89 Gb LaCie d2 External LUN0 revision 3.03) Passed the surface scan, disk controller and read write tests. Is the disk failing?

Odd stufff, I have a 500 gig Lacie ext HD that my user uses on her Vista machine...
I am setting up a replacement for the Vi$ta machine, which is a 24 inch imac.
I plugged in the ext HD and nothing happened after I powered on the ext HD.
I checked disk utility and it showed up but as a 2TB size ext HD...
I unplugged the Lacie and plugged it back in and all the info showed up correctly.
But ALL the buttons under "First Aid" are greyed out so I cant verify permissions, disk, or repair disk or permissions.

Basically I need a large storage option that is set up to be resistant to loss for my high def video and images. My 500 GB iMac is full to the brim but I don't want to spend 5-800 dollars to back everything up.
I have a 500 GB time machine that is also full so I assume it's just erasing old records with new as we go along now.
I want to purchase 4-5 of the lacie 1TB drives and set up a RAID array external to the iMac. Can I do this? Is it a process a computer novice can do?
If I got 5x1TB drives and did RAID 1 or something I would have 4TB of storage and one drive could die and still maintain all my data? Is there a better RAID version like RAID 6,10 etc...?
Is it possible that I change my external HDD format from HFS+ case sensitive to HFS+ normal(not case sensitive)?
