Hardware :: Can't Format Usb Flash Drive - "permission Denied"

Jul 29, 2009

The problem is when I put my 4gb flash drive in, the computer doesn't recognize it and doesn't show up on the desktop. So I go into Disk Utility and try to format it to maybe fix it that way, but when I try to, it says format failed, permission denied.

OS X :: Mac Terminal Permission Denied

Jan 16, 2010

I'm attempting to duplicate the functionality exposed by Apple's signature server, by entering (/private/etc/hosts) into the command line of Terminal Bash. I'm doing this to downgrade the firmware in my iphone 3gs from 3.1.2 to 3.0.1. I've been receiving a (permission denied) response for my efforts. I've gone into "Disk Utility and added myself as a "root user". However, that doesn't seem to correct the permission denied issue. Perhaps I didn't correctly add myself as a root user.

OS X :: Sudo Not Working - Permission Denied

Mar 4, 2008

I've used sudo before successfully, but suddenly it doesn't work anymore! For example, I try setting a shutdown timer using:

Code:
sudo shutdown -h +60
or
sudo pmset disksleep 30
or even just
sudo
and get
Code:
sudo: can't open /private/etc/sudoers: Permission denied
Just typing sudo alone results in the same error.

I've tried searching and following other threads on this topic to no avail. Repairing permissions from disk utility didn't help either.

OS X :: SMB Server Configuration - Permission Denied

Oct 7, 2009

I'm trying to configure a mac as a smb server and am encountering numerous difficulties in doing so. While I managed to get around most of them, one remains unsettled. I have my samba server running and what to add new users and passwords. Yet, when I want to use useradd or adduser, neither of the commands are recognized in the Mac OS X 10.6 terminal.

Moreover, the smbpasswd command is either non recognized when using sudo or, when logged in as a root, I get: sh: /usr/bin/smbpasswd: Permission denied
I also tried adding users through webmin, but I can only synchronize does on the Mac and when I want to modify the passwords, I get: Access control violation: Failed to change password using smbpasswd:

How do you add and update smb users on Mac OS X ?

OS X :: Permission Denied On Updating Ports?

Dec 26, 2009

I just got a MacBook Pro in November, and I've been having so many problems trying to do command line stuff that it makes me want to cry. Right now I'm trying to reinstall lua because it stopped working right, and I'm trying to install MacPorts to do so. When I tried to run the command: sudo port -d selfupdate, to update the ports like the MacPorts website says to do, I got a couple of permission denied messages and something about "can't find package Pextlib 1.0". So I looked up the Pextlib thing and was following the instructions at this site but when I try to edit pkgIndex.tcl file I get a permission denied message again.

I tried repairing permissions with disk utility, but that didn't work. I ran "ls -lad /" and got: drwxrwxr-t 33 root admin 1190 Dec 26 17:44 /
and I ran "id" and got: uid=501(myname) gid=20(staff) groups=20(staff),204(_developer),100(_lpoperator),98(_lpadmin),81(_appserveradm),80(admin),79(_appse rverusr),61(localaccounts),12(everyone),401(com.apple.access_screensharing),402(com.apple.sharepoint .group.1)

OS X :: 10.6. 3 - Trying To Install Symfony Permission Denied

Apr 23, 2010

I am trying to install Symfony (a php framework) locally and have installed MAMP.

Symfony asks me to run this command
Code:
php lib/vendor/symfony/data/bin/symfony generate:project PROJECT_NAME
but I get
Code:
-bash: /usr/bin/php: Permission denied
now, in /usr/bin/php there is an alias to the location of php which is under MAMP in bin/php5.3/bin and this may be a reason for the error.

Even
Code:
php -v
gives
Code:
-bash: /usr/bin/php: Permission denied
I tried to login as root, but still nothing.

OS X :: Change Write Permission On USB Flash Drive?

Apr 14, 2009

When I started uni years ago, we were given free 2G USB flash drives. The drives were partitioned in half so that there was a read/write partition to use for whatever and the other partition is read only - it has a bunch of files relevant to us students and links to all the relevant uni webpages and such. Now that I've finished uni I'd like to use my drive as one whole read/write-able drive. But I'm having trouble getting rid of the read only partition. The get info panel shows that I have only permission to read and there is no option there to change that.

Disk Utility will not allow me to erase, format or re-partition the drive (I can erase the read/write portion though). All the options to do anything to the drive are greyed out, presumably because I cannot write to it. Is there some way I can give myself permission to write to this drive? It is a perfectly good drive and it seems a shame to waste half of its space on stuff I will never use again. I am running OS X - 10.5.6 on an iMac G5 and the drive is formatted as: MS-DOS (FAT12). I have also tried to erase/reformat it in Vista, but cannot because of the write protection.

OS X :: Unable To Format/Using Transcend's 8GB Flash Drive?

Sep 19, 2009

I was recently gifted an 8gig Transcend Flash Drive by a friend. When I inserted the drive into my unibody MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, it pops up a window that says:

The disk you inserted was not readable by thing computer

Initialize / Ignore / Eject

Clicking on Initialize takes me to Disk utility and if I try to format the drive. it gives me an error that says:

Partition failed - POSIX reports: Cannot allocate memory.

I then take the drive to a Mac that's running Leopard, but the same thing happens there as well, except the error when formatting tells me it's an 'Input / Output error'

On both the Macs, I've tried formatting with a GUID and MBR, but neither works. I've tried to format it as Free Space/MS-DOS format or even the native Mac OS Extended, but nothing works.

--

Now, before you come to the conclusion that it may be a faulty thumb drive, I need to tell you that the drive works perfectly fine on a PC. I've tried it on 3 different PCs, running XP, 7 and Ubuntu respectively. All the tree are capable of detecting, mounting the drive and read/write it just fine. I could even format the drive just fine on all three computers.

What's more, I installed Mac Drive on a XP machine and it could format the drive as HFS+ too.

This thing is driving me nuts for the past 12 hours and I'm out of solutions what to do.

OS X :: Can't Format Flash Drive - POSIX Error

Sep 25, 2009

I've done this many times before, and I think it's just a failing drive, but I wanted to check and see if anyone had successfully worked around this problem before. I have a 16GB Transcend flash drive, and it stopped working last week. When I connect it to a computer, I get the message that I have inserted a disk that cannot be recognized. Disk Utility only recognizes the device, but no volumes (see attachment #2). When I try to format it, I get an error that says it Can't allocate memory (see attachment #1).

Anyone recognize this? I can send it back and get the drive replaced under warranty, just wanted to see if there were any other thoughts.

MacBook Pro :: Format A Flash Drive Using A PC To Work On A MAC?

Mar 20, 2012

I work for a post secondary school with online formatted classes. We send flash drives out to students to access video content when they are on the go, but it was pretty much made for Windows based computers.  I have had a few students now who have Macs and cannot open the content or are getting a message stating the drive is not formated.  I see many instructions on how to format a flash drive from a Mac to work on a Mac & PC but nothing about being able to format the flash drive using a PC so it can work on a Mac.

OS X :: Format External Hard Drive In Apple Partition Map Format?

Nov 5, 2009

I'm running Snow Leopard on my new Macbook Pro. I've got a 1.5TB External hard drive that I'm trying to figure out how to format in HFS+ with Apple Partition Map. I can figure out how to format in HFS using Disk Utility, however it still does it in GUID format and I do not know how to do it in Apple Partition Map.

Googleing this for hours has lead with all kinds of information on how to go to GUID FROM Apple Partition Map but not the other way around. I know GUID is the new hottness.. but this drive will be used exclusively to connect to my XBOX 360 and it supposedly only reads HFS+ when its formatted with Apple Partition Map. (I have tried it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID, and the XBOX does NOT recognize it) I do not want to use Fat 32, (I know that that is the other major option) beacuse it limits file size.
