iMac is been in on the repair bench more times than I can count. Luckily, most of it was under warranty. But I was just wondering, if anyone here's got the same system (or knows someone that does) and has 'modded' it to run cooler?

Up till last week everything was fine, I could run 'Second Life', photoshop, email, a browser, download stuff, play Itunes AND watch a movie all at once without any trouble.
But recently the computer has gone a bit weird.
It started getting very hot, much slower and turning itself off.
I just bought a brand new imac running 10.5.7 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 i downloaded Handbreak to rip some of my dvd's and put them on my external hard drive as soon as i open handbreak and start ripping a dvd, the fans in my computer start whirring away, pretty loudly i downloaded the istatnano widget to check my fan rpm's and temps

I recently got my 3.2ghz mid 2010 21.5' imac. I noticed that its been getting really really hot on the top on the top left and right corners of the computer. Usually i am watching tv series (.avi) files on it using quicktime and vlc and i checked the temps reaching these as follows

are these temps okay? or is htemachine over heating for the activities i am doing, usually i amjust msning, and watching tv series.
I got an iMac i5 recently, and I've downloaded iStat. It seems as though the HD hovers around 55C, and I think 60C is the maximum. Are there any precautions I should take, or is there nothing to worry about?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI don't know if it is a fan or a drive that starts up and runs really fast and loud, then the computer shuts off. I always thought it was the fan, but now am not sure. I have moved it to a place where it is exposed to more air, but that has not seemed to help. Does anyone have an idea or solution to this problem? The nearest Mac dealer is about 80 miles away, so if I can fix this on my own, I would like to try.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy Imac freezes up a lot, usually after 10 to 15 minutes of being on. I suspect it has something to do with overheating. I have to get my data off of the drive before I take it into the Apple store for fear that they will will just replace the drive and all will be lost. I have a fan blowing on it now in the back and am copying data onto an external drive little by little until it freezes up.
I bought it last fall and have a 3 year warranty on it and this will be my second time bringing it in for repair. The first time it was a problem right out of the box when I brought it home and it was replaced. It's a 3.06 processor, 24 inch screen. I am not impressed by the hardware reliability and the all in one system. I am regretting buying the imac after being a PC user for so long and I am using my Windows PC to write this. I suspect the cooling system could be better on my IMAC given the compressed footprint.
I've been having trouble with my new iMac that i purchased recently (26th of August actually). Whenever I'm doing something CPU intensive, the machine just shuts off, but usually it's not right in the middle of whatever I'm doing, it's after I close the application. For example: I was playing SimCity4 the other day, pretty old game to cause this problem I would think. As soon as I exit the game, the system shuts off. No warning, nothing, just shuts off. This will happen when i close VMs (it actually happened yesterday while I was running the VM), etc. So I've reset the SMC/PMU, PRAM/NVRAM, and I've even reseated the RAM. Still the same problem. I've taken it in to a repair center in town, hoping I'll get it back by the end of the week. Does anyone have any idea why this would be happening?
View 22 Replies View RelatedYesterday a friend gave me a really nice 17" iMac G4 he was planning to throw out because it was having problems. I would really like to get this working and would potentially be willing to buy parts to repair it. I have a significant amount of Apple hardware experience, but would like to get the opinions of people who may be more familiar with iMacs than myself on these forums. The problem is that the computer has random kernel panics. Sometimes it occurs as soon as the computer is turned on, sometimes after it has been on for a few minutes, sometimes after a few hours. So far, I have replaced the RAM with known good sticks, have replaced the hard drive with a tested good one from my collection (and these were both upgrades to boot!) and I have re-applied thermal paste (Arctic Silver) to all key components (CPU, ends of heatpipe, GPU) but to no avail, I still have the same problem.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI was using my Imac G5 (pre iSight) and it suddenly shut down. It smelled of burnt plastic so I immediately disconnected the power and all accessories, laid the computer down, and took off the cover. Everything seemed normal, except the smell of burnt plastic coming from the fan and faintly from the power supply. I took the metal piece covering the fan and hard drive, and attempted to clean the fan. After about an hour I put the cover back on, plugged my computer back in, and started it up. It again shut down after about half an hour of use. What's wrong? Do I need a new power supply? I checked the Apple Recall and my serial fits, but the symptoms do not follow the ones in the recall.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have brought a new iMac 27'' the i5 model. I have noticed that the fans never change speed no matter how hot my processor gets ? Is this normal ? I have ran prime 95 and istat pro to check the temps and fan speeds. Nothing changes apart from the temperature.

Ive had my Imac for about 9 months and havnt had any issues with it until the past 2 months. The first issue was that i would leave it running for the day and i would restart and get the flashing folder issue. I would then go through all the appropriate steps- unplugging from the power source for 45 seconds +, try booting it with the OSX cd in, ect. At first these steps worked. The next issue i had was a power outage. I followed the same procedure when i went to start my imac up again (mind you it was within 10-15 minutes of it being turned off) and these steps did nothing and the flashing question marked folder appeared every time. I called Apple support and after 2 hours they insisted that it was a faulty hard drive. I let the imac sit for the rest of the day and before i went to bed i decided to give it one more shot. It booted up just fine.
Ive come to the conclusion that im only getting the boot error when it has been running for long periods of time and that the casing feels hot when i try restart. I was wondering if you guys could let me know if my theory of over heating causing the boot error is correct, and if so is there anything i can do myself to help correct the problem? I really want to avoid going to a mac store because its so far away from my location.
I have an iMac G5 that is starting up, then working okay for 1-2 minutes. After that, the processor usage goes way up, and the fans start spinning loudly. It's a first generation 1.8 GHz with a 17" display. Mac OS X Leopard. Recently, it spun up and then shut down and wouldn't start again. The room it's in is < 75 degrees F. No malodor, or other symptoms save for hot to the touch. Has been left shut off and unplugged for a few hours, and still has this problem.

It also does this when i put it in sleep mode and then leave. anybody have any thoughts.

OK, with those relevant stats out of the way, my MBP will usually sit anywhere from 120-125 F just browsing with iTunes playing in the background, Mail open and maybe Parallels. However, I after letting my sister use my computer and her going on Farmville in Facebook, I noticed it was running up around 140-150 and a couple times reached 160-163 (these numbers are via two different temp apps).
When I looked, there were 3 flash programs going on...two pop-ups for a seedy cam site and Farmville. Closed the two pop-ups and the temps dropped back to 147-150. Once Farmville was closed, temps went back to normal. My question is it normal for flash applications to make the laptop run so hot? Is there some sort of update I might need?
I tried to install a larger hard drive in my mac mini pps version. Everything seems to be alright but after a few miniutes the computer gets hot on right side and then it shuts off .I have shut it down and wait untill I hear from you

View 10 Replies View RelatedWhat could possibly make a macbook pro overheat before it is even booted? I have bootcamp installed so I can run solidworks and a few misc programs in XP. The machine always runs a bit toasty for my liking under windows so I use smc fan control to crank the fan and then reboot into XP pro. This works great as long as I dont need to sleep the computer and re-open later. In this situation the fans dont resume the higher speed I specified and I get temps in the 70-80C range.Thats not really the problem though. Today I started the machine (from a complete shutdown) and held option to bring up the bootcamp chooser. Meanwhile I was distracted with something at work so the computer sat like this for 15 minutes. No OS had booted, just the gray chooser screen. When I came back the fans were running full blast! The overheat protection had come on. I quickly booted into snowleopard and the temps were in the high 80-low 90's. After a minute it was back to normal 50's but I'm puzzled. All software is up to date.Nothing was even running?!? How is this possible? Nothing should have been straining the system.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got an early 2005 model Power Mac G5. Bought it from a hospital and it's really clean inside. Lately it's been shutting down spontaneously without warning. I thought it might be an issue with overheating, but I'm not that familiar with normal heat levels for a CPU. I installed iStat nano and checked the temperatures. I took a screen shot of the widget. Temperatures are in Fahrenheit. Can anyone tell me if I'm on the right track? What do I need to do to solve this problem?

I have a 2.0 macbook with 2g ram 80gb harddrive with 29gb free. My problem is that my macbook runs idle at around 130-140 degrees fahrenheit. When I go to Youtube it goes up to around 160 degrees and when I go to Google Books and open up a page my macbook reaches around 180 degrees I also do a lot of audio production and temperatures reach a steady 165-180 if I have a fair bit of processing going on.
What the hell is going on? I need to use google books for school and don't think it is safe to use my MB at such high temps. Also with all of the audio work I do I imagine that the lifespan of this computer will not last very long.
I heard it was normal for Mac's to overheat, but mine gets hot. I don't know if it is because I'm not used to it, but it's been on my lap for 30 mins. (on as well), and it has already burned my leg.

My MacBook Pro gets hot. Right now I have Safari, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and text edit open but I'm not doing anything strenuous on any of them. My CPU temperature is 124 F. My fans are running at 4000rpm, but only because I'm using smcFanControl. When I use firefox it gets even hotter.

Since i've installed Yosemite, I noticed that my fans are always running on high level (6000rpm) for no reason. As soon as I open it the cpu starts overheating (between 195 and 205 degrees) even if there's no apps using significant energy. I already tried to reset the SMC or the PRAM with no results.

Over the last few months I've noticed a trend with my dual 2GHz G5 at home, it often locks up and the fans go full-throttle. It sometimes happens when I'm using it and often when I leave it idling for a while. I've noticed that the CPU A and CPU B temperatures start around 120 degrees F when the machine is first powered up and steadily climbs to around 150. Is that normal? The dual 1.8GHz G5 I have at the office doesn't run hotter than 110 degrees. The fans haven't failed. Is there a coolant link? Is there anything I can do to diagnose this, or do I simply need to call AppleCare?

I have noted the large number of problems with this particular model and heat issues, but I just received this stripped MDD to do an upgrade on the cheap for my B&W G3 server. In hindsight this might not have been the best unit to upgrade with, but for $72 on ebay (seller was unsure it was dual processor--which may have helped lack of bidding), I figured it was worth it.
After putting RAM to 2GB, putting in an ATI 9200 PCI graphics card, and inserting my HDs from the B&W with updated Tiger installed, everything booted fine with no problems. Dual processors checked out, RAM was fine, and all drives loaded without glitch.
Next go round, after 20-30 minutes it does the sleep/freeze thing everyone has mentioned here and elsewhere. All fans work and have tested with door open and high speed fan directly over heat sink and it still shuts down. Temperature Monitor has it rising above 80c and climbing, which I no longer let go until "closing" to avoid any more damage.
The weird thing about this is that during all of this, the aluminum heat sink remains relatively cool, as if it is not making any contact.
Is it possible it just needs a pad or compound to make contact and dissipate the heat through the sink etc., or does this sound like either a faulty sensor or failing CPU? The compound would be an easy fix (and it sounds logical), but I may just be missing the obvious here. My hope is that the prior owner just did not bother to find out why it did this and cannibalized the unit.
I could take out all the drives, etc. to reduce the heat build up, but I want this to function as a feasible house server that can be left on most of the time + because of the cool heat sink the behavior does not seem to relate to the heat in the housing.
