I got an iMac i5 recently, and I've downloaded iStat. It seems as though the HD hovers around 55C, and I think 60C is the maximum. Are there any precautions I should take, or is there nothing to worry about?

Up till last week everything was fine, I could run 'Second Life', photoshop, email, a browser, download stuff, play Itunes AND watch a movie all at once without any trouble.
But recently the computer has gone a bit weird.
It started getting very hot, much slower and turning itself off.
I've had a lot of problems with my iMac G5 power supply and since I have newer computers I've decided to get rid of this computer.
I want to save the hard drive and put it in a case, then use it as an external drive on my other Macs.
What sort of case do I need to shop for? Should I look for SATA or what exactly is the proper nomenclature.
Is USB 2 the preferred choice, or Firewire, or what? Is there a USB 3? I use a mid-2010 27 inch iMac with the intel processor, and I needed to buy an adapter to use my older Firewire external drive. Is Firewire a dodo?
I was wondering if anyone had successfully installed and 2nd hard drive in their iMac?I have a 2 year old 2.8 24'' iMac and the performance just isn't cutting the mustard, it's all hard drive related and I already have a decent 1TB drive in there.I was thinking of perhaps swapping the optical drive with a second hard drive for RAID0, but not too sure if there will be space and was wondering if the optical drive is a standard SATA connector, or if there is some way I could run a SATA+power cables externally?

I have the new one in an external case with USB 2.0 right now. Is there some way I can transfer the entire contents of the old hard drive on to the new one and then swap out the old drive with the new drive and not miss a beat?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just bought a brand new imac running 10.5.7 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 i downloaded Handbreak to rip some of my dvd's and put them on my external hard drive as soon as i open handbreak and start ripping a dvd, the fans in my computer start whirring away, pretty loudly i downloaded the istatnano widget to check my fan rpm's and temps

iMac is been in on the repair bench more times than I can count. Luckily, most of it was under warranty. But I was just wondering, if anyone here's got the same system (or knows someone that does) and has 'modded' it to run cooler?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently got my 3.2ghz mid 2010 21.5' imac. I noticed that its been getting really really hot on the top on the top left and right corners of the computer. Usually i am watching tv series (.avi) files on it using quicktime and vlc and i checked the temps reaching these as follows

and the fans are at

are these temps okay? or is htemachine over heating for the activities i am doing, usually i amjust msning, and watching tv series.
I don't know if it is a fan or a drive that starts up and runs really fast and loud, then the computer shuts off. I always thought it was the fan, but now am not sure. I have moved it to a place where it is exposed to more air, but that has not seemed to help. Does anyone have an idea or solution to this problem? The nearest Mac dealer is about 80 miles away, so if I can fix this on my own, I would like to try.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy Imac freezes up a lot, usually after 10 to 15 minutes of being on. I suspect it has something to do with overheating. I have to get my data off of the drive before I take it into the Apple store for fear that they will will just replace the drive and all will be lost. I have a fan blowing on it now in the back and am copying data onto an external drive little by little until it freezes up.
I bought it last fall and have a 3 year warranty on it and this will be my second time bringing it in for repair. The first time it was a problem right out of the box when I brought it home and it was replaced. It's a 3.06 processor, 24 inch screen. I am not impressed by the hardware reliability and the all in one system. I am regretting buying the imac after being a PC user for so long and I am using my Windows PC to write this. I suspect the cooling system could be better on my IMAC given the compressed footprint.
I've been having trouble with my new iMac that i purchased recently (26th of August actually). Whenever I'm doing something CPU intensive, the machine just shuts off, but usually it's not right in the middle of whatever I'm doing, it's after I close the application. For example: I was playing SimCity4 the other day, pretty old game to cause this problem I would think. As soon as I exit the game, the system shuts off. No warning, nothing, just shuts off. This will happen when i close VMs (it actually happened yesterday while I was running the VM), etc. So I've reset the SMC/PMU, PRAM/NVRAM, and I've even reseated the RAM. Still the same problem. I've taken it in to a repair center in town, hoping I'll get it back by the end of the week. Does anyone have any idea why this would be happening?
View 22 Replies View RelatedI've been looking at a number of different Firewire 800 enclosures to use with my new Mac Mini and I have seen lots of complaints with almost all the enclosures that I have investigated, including the Newertech MiniStack v3 which I thought should be a good one. A recent enclosure I came across that I haven't seen any bad reviews about is the Icy Dock (MB559UEB-1S). I'd like to know if others are using this and what they think about it. The next question has to do with the type of hard drive to put into the enclosure. Is it worth getting a high performance drive, or will the Firewire 800 interface be the bottleneck even with an average speed drive?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI plan to purchase one of the new iMac's and I assume that the hard drive is not user replaceable so I know there are warranty risks but a couple months ago I was able to upgrade the hard drive in my current generation MBP to a 250GB drive. When I get an iMac I plan to get the more expensive 20 inch version and want at least 500GB since it'll be dual boot (BootCamp) Windows XP/Mac. Even the 750GB is tempting. I may go the route of the smallest hard drive and then buy a larger hard drive and upgrade myself to save money but is this hard to do?

Basically, I do a lot of audio work with Logic and DP and I'm interested in replacing my 20" iMac's optical drive with a second internal hard drive. About 6 months ago, I did a DIY replacement of my iMac's internal hard drive (upgrade to 1 tb), so I'm pretty sure I'd like to DIY an optical drive / hard drive swap - that is, if it's 1) Proven to work stably (thermally and otherwise) 2) Not going to require the iMac's fan to be running faster/louder than normal Looking at my iMac's system profiler, the DVD drive is on an ATA bus (which, as I remember it, is slower than S-ATA). What kind of transfer rates do you think one could realistically expect with a hard drive on this ATA bus? Also, would I have to be careful about new hard drive compatibility, or are S-ATA and S-ATA II backwards compatible with ATA?
View 1 Replies View RelatedLately I've been using my external hard drive as the main drive of my imac I5 and every day it freezes when I open 3 or 4 apps or more or while doing several stuff at the same time. This, obviously, doesnt happen when using the internal hard drive of the imac, so I suppose is due to using firewire 800 or usb 2.0. Is it normal for every external hard drive to freeze when using it as the main drive or maybe is it that my external hard drive is bad?
I'm planning on buying a more quieter external hard drive to use as the main drive of my imac, but I wont do so if it also keeps freezing every day. Any suggestions? Is it normal even when using firewire 800? When using the external hard drive I umount the internal drive of the imac. Maybe this is the reason? Its a Lacie Big Disk 500GB. Would an external SSD make a difference or would it still freeze?
Yesterday a friend gave me a really nice 17" iMac G4 he was planning to throw out because it was having problems. I would really like to get this working and would potentially be willing to buy parts to repair it. I have a significant amount of Apple hardware experience, but would like to get the opinions of people who may be more familiar with iMacs than myself on these forums. The problem is that the computer has random kernel panics. Sometimes it occurs as soon as the computer is turned on, sometimes after it has been on for a few minutes, sometimes after a few hours. So far, I have replaced the RAM with known good sticks, have replaced the hard drive with a tested good one from my collection (and these were both upgrades to boot!) and I have re-applied thermal paste (Arctic Silver) to all key components (CPU, ends of heatpipe, GPU) but to no avail, I still have the same problem.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI was using my Imac G5 (pre iSight) and it suddenly shut down. It smelled of burnt plastic so I immediately disconnected the power and all accessories, laid the computer down, and took off the cover. Everything seemed normal, except the smell of burnt plastic coming from the fan and faintly from the power supply. I took the metal piece covering the fan and hard drive, and attempted to clean the fan. After about an hour I put the cover back on, plugged my computer back in, and started it up. It again shut down after about half an hour of use. What's wrong? Do I need a new power supply? I checked the Apple Recall and my serial fits, but the symptoms do not follow the ones in the recall.

I'm curious what people use for external storage on their iMacs. I have a Mac Pro which is getting a little long in the tooth. I'm debating whether to get a new Mac Pro or to get an iMac, which would be a pretty good speed bump from my Mac Pro 1,1. I'd get the ssd drive, and the 2TB harddrive and get aftermarket RAM. But what I like about the Mac Pro is the upgrades you can do. And I like the four hard drive bays, for storage and backup. I've got over 3 TB of photos and music/tv/movies, so I'm going to need an external drive. In addition, I'd like to be able to backup everything. Is there an elegant way to do this on an iMac with an external drive that isn't super loud and hot?
View 14 Replies View RelatedIve had my Imac for about 9 months and havnt had any issues with it until the past 2 months. The first issue was that i would leave it running for the day and i would restart and get the flashing folder issue. I would then go through all the appropriate steps- unplugging from the power source for 45 seconds +, try booting it with the OSX cd in, ect. At first these steps worked. The next issue i had was a power outage. I followed the same procedure when i went to start my imac up again (mind you it was within 10-15 minutes of it being turned off) and these steps did nothing and the flashing question marked folder appeared every time. I called Apple support and after 2 hours they insisted that it was a faulty hard drive. I let the imac sit for the rest of the day and before i went to bed i decided to give it one more shot. It booted up just fine.
Ive come to the conclusion that im only getting the boot error when it has been running for long periods of time and that the casing feels hot when i try restart. I was wondering if you guys could let me know if my theory of over heating causing the boot error is correct, and if so is there anything i can do myself to help correct the problem? I really want to avoid going to a mac store because its so far away from my location.
I have an iMac G5 that is starting up, then working okay for 1-2 minutes. After that, the processor usage goes way up, and the fans start spinning loudly. It's a first generation 1.8 GHz with a 17" display. Mac OS X Leopard. Recently, it spun up and then shut down and wouldn't start again. The room it's in is < 75 degrees F. No malodor, or other symptoms save for hot to the touch. Has been left shut off and unplugged for a few hours, and still has this problem.
