Final Cut Pro X :: Import NTSC Video Into Appropriate Project Settings And Keep Same Aspect Ratio
Sep 9, 2014
I edit on FCPX v10.0.9... (OSX 10.8.5) ...a client sent video at NTSC 720x480 DV... How do I FIRST import that video into an appropriate project setting without distorting the ratio (it keeps getting converted to 4:3 - narrower - and the original video is not 4:3)? and SECOND export and keep the same aspect ratio? I've done much research and realize that NTSC 720x480 DV is SD and FCPX wants square pixels etc.,My goal is to import the video, edit it, and export it all the while keeping the original aspect ration.

I often shoot short videos with my iPhone. I bring them into FCPX and edit it. Â
The problem is when I export it, it will have black bars on the side once its back on my iPhone. It will never just export to fit the screen like it did when I shot the video. I tried to customize the aspect ratio but it only gives me set options.Â

I am using FCP X 10.1.1 on an iMac with OS 10.9.3Â
I have HD video shot in 1080X720. I realize a dvd isn't HD, but I would like to try and get the wide screen aspect. Is that even possible?Â

How do I make the movies I download from the net Full HD or Blu-Ray. The movies that I download are usually something like 1280x550. But when I use a video converter to make it 1280x800 (the highest resolution on my 13' macbook pro) it just stretches the movie so the quality becomes worse. how to make these movies full HD or Blu-Ray and change the aspect ratio so the movie takes up th whole screen.

I have a 1920x1080 video that I want to crop to a 4:3 aspect ratio.
I'm working with compressor 3. Â
When I set "crop original" to "4x3 1,33:1", I cannot manipulate the cropping. It is fixed to left=240, right=240, top=0 and bottom=0.
This results in 1440x1080 4x3, that's correct. But what I'd like to do is crop the top and bottom, too, while keeping the 4:3 aspect ratio.
How do i do that?Â
When I set "crop original" to "custom" (I hope I translated that correctly), cropping left, top, right and bottom is possible. I manipulate the red rectangle in the preview window and the cropping changes accordingly. Now how do I tell compressor to keep the 4:3 aspect ratio while manipulating/zooming with the red rectangle? I don't want to calculate the cropping, this is way too cumbersome.

So why is Widescreen better than the "old" 4:3 aspect ratio? I haven't seen a website/document where content is arranged 16:9, is this seriously JUST for movies? I just started using my old Thinkpad t60 again, and its 15" whcih feels allot bigger than my 15.4" MacBook Pro. who exactly needs widescreen andy why are they still measure monitors in inch wouldn't it make more sense to do a Pixel/cm^2 ?? plain cm^2 would be better as well

I have a 2nd gen MBP hooked up to a wide screen LCD (1680x1050) panel and I occasionally play games that don't naively support the wide aspect ratio and they get all stretched out when scaled to fit the screen. Is there any way to tell OS X to center the "odd" resolutions in the panel (leaving black bars) when a game wants to use that resolution? I'd much rather have a smaller picture than have it distorted.

You used to be able to select "movie properties" in the previous QuickTime 7 but that option is not available in QuickTime X in Snow Leopard
Say, you have an HD movie which is on your hard drive, but in 4:3 format. You want to change it to 16:9 which is the widescreen format, to view the movie at its proper aspect ratio. You can do this in VLC, but my question is, How do you change the aspect Ratio in Quicktime Player X?

Has anyone who's gotten one of these tried watching a DVD or playing a game in full screen on a 30" monitor w. no scaling chip (ie the HP LP3065)??? Just curious as to whether the quality is good, I hear the scaling on some cards kindof sucks.

I have a folder of images that I would like to crop to a certain aspect ratio. I don't want to make them all the same number of pixels, I just want them all to have a 16:10 aspect ratio. Is there a certain app that can batch crop like this for me?

I am making an animation using photoshop and istopmotion. I save each drawing in photoshop as a frame. When I import the image into istopmotion it changes the aspect ratio of my picture and crops some of the top and the bottom. I have tried to change the aspect ratio of my image to 4:3, 16:9, and lots of other ratios. When I look at the document setting in istopmotion it says the aspect ratio should be HDV1060 4:3.

I have a lot of home movies that were recorded onto a Verbatim Hard Drive Recorder in a .mpg format. These movies are in the proper widescreen aspect ratio when played back on my TV, however, when I transfered them to my Mac the .mpg video files became fullscreen. I had to use MPEG Streamclip and the MPEG-2 Playback Component to create true widescreen .dv files for iMovie. However, I was forced to to do an erase and reinstall of Leopard last week and I lost the MPEG-2 Component.Â
I was upgrading to Lion though, and I had heard that the Component was no longer necessary as Lion had the capability to playback MPEG-2 files. I had assumed that Streamclip would also use this built-in MPEG-2 Component. I have upraded to Lion just today, but Streamclip cannot open any of the .mpg files claiming it needs the Component. Is there another Streamclip equivelant that can correct the aspect ratio with requiring me to buy another Playback Component? Or better yet is there any existing application on Lion that can correct the video shape?Â

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, I can no longer import P2 footage. I get the stop sign and error: no data.In the import window I can play the clip and everything is fine, but when I add to the clip to the import queue it just times out.
Any thoughts? Is it somehow related to Quicktime being updated by Snow Leopard?

I am trying to set up my sequence so it is DV PAL 1024 x 576 and I can't seem to find the option. My sequence currently says it is 720 x 576.
I can import clips as 1024 x 576 but when i put them in the sequence it cuts the top and bottom out and when i tried to scale them in the sequence window it wouldn't let me but in the source window I can see the edges.

I can import only selected portions of video clips from my iPhone5. At present I have to import the full length of the video clip into the event and in so doing, I am unable to 'weed' out unrequired segments. Is editing the video clip in the iPhone itself the only option one has or is there any other way of doing it during the import process itself?Â

I have come across a problem whilst editing in final cut pro.
When i import from my camera into fcp the video quality looks fine and it is hd and when i play it frame by frame the video quality looks fine, it's just when i play it, the video suddenly drops in quality and goes slightly pixelated.

I've been working on avery complicated project all day with multiple layered clips with key frame animations, colour effects etc. All was fine until I opened a new project in the same event which I was going to use to create some effects sequences for the main project. When I went back to the original project it was empty. Tried the Undo function in case I had done anything stupid but it was greyed out. Went to the FCPX backups and the last file was almost 2 hours old but did not have any sign of this project. The only thing I have left is all the imported media.Â
Using FCPX 10.1.3. This is really annoying as all I have left is an h264 file of the almost complete project and it will be almost impossible to start from scratch.Â

Video is coming out jittery - kind of stops and continues ever so slightly throughout movie. Project is set 1080 - imported video is from DSLR in 720. I "shared" the final video and chose "master" (default) to desktop - project is 182 GB ( I have not compressed in Compressor). I haven't even started doing some serious editing yet - I just wanted to see how the color/sharpness and clips in general look. I connected to my big screen TV to view but even on the Macbook Pro I get the same results. I have 500 gb space on internal drive and 1.5 TB on external drive.
Using a Macbook Pro 15" 2.2 GHz intel core i7 intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB card. Not sure if there are other settings affecting this situation.

So I found the lost project in FCPX. It has a music tract, text and video. When I pulled the project down for editing, I am able to separate the music from the video, but the text bubbles do not appear above the video allowing me to change the misspelled words that need editing.I've searched all of my backup drives for the original footage in case I have to re-edit the whole thing, but I'm unable to find the original footage. Every event in my libraries appears as a finished project.

I made an iDVD project a while ago and discarded everything but the DVD disk. Now I want to import the project back into iMovie to use it as part of another project. Is this possible? It seems like I could play it on the TV and then import it into the computer, but I have forgotten how and what equipment and programs that I would need.

I have created a FCPX project with a frame rate that does not work well with the frame rate in the events I have taken clips from. I see that I cannot change the frame rate in this project. Can I copy the events on the timeline in this project to a new one with the correct frame rate?

I was editing a music video last night and finished the edit. I then began to do my color grading. I use Magic Bullet Looks and was using Neat Video Noise Reducer as well. Nothing out of the norm as far as my workflow goes. I got about half way finished with color and turned my computer off when i went to bed. This morning when i reopened fcpx the project loaded but showed a few spots of the timeline that needed to render (the orange bars). BUt once i clicked inside my timeline fcpx froze and i would have to force quit the program.. I have tried uplugging the drive that the events and projects are saved on and opening fcpx that way..it works and other projects from other drives are working fine but when i plug the drive with the corrupted project it loads the project in the timeline but still freezes every single time i click in the timeline and the render percentage is stuck at 0%....Every once in a while when i try it will render about 9 to 30 % then freeze again..

I have a new Mac Pro running Maverick bought when my IMac running Leopard died on me. The reason I never upgraded the old IMac was because of FCP 6 which I did not want to lose. I backed up regularly onto Time Machine and kept my FCP project files on an external hard driveÂ
I was part way through editing a project when my IMac died. I bought 7toX thinking I would be able to import it but now find that I can't because you have to have FCP 6 or 7 already installed to do so, which you can't with OS 10.9.4.Â

FCPX 10.1.2 gets stuck while loading a project: the status bar on top of the window saying "Loading xxx project" shows the task is completed with a full blue bar but nothing happens and the panel doesn't go away. Only a few commands are available (not greyed out) in the menus; the Quit Final Cut Pro is available but I get a beep and nothing happens when I select this command. Only way to exit is to Force quit (opt-cmd-esc).Â
The strange thing is that I did not try to open that xxx project in the timeline. I was just trying to copy a range from a compound clip in the timeline into another compound clip already open in (another level of) timeline: just after selecting the range (R) FCP X decided to load project xxx and it got stuck.
Another weird thing is that while the Loading panel was visible and I had no control on FCPX, FCPX started to render the compound clip in the timeline. So I waited hoping that at its end (not the usual behavior... but ok) I could continue working. No way: rendering finishes, but the Loading panel is still there.Â

I'm using Final Cut Pro X 10.1.3 and I can't find how to transfer my project. I want to do this because my laptop is slower than my Desktop iMac and I want to continue editing it on there. "Duplicate Project" no longer works the way it used to, and "Move Project" only moves it between libraries on the computer.
