Aug 30, 2014my Final Cut Pro 10.1.3 is crashing when I try to edit a simple 2 minute video clip.I have been doing a web video series for over 2 months now uploading videos every day - with no problems using this same workflow but now I am stuck and have a deadline coming up in 24 hours.
I shoot with a Sony EX-3 camera using SxS cards which create XDCAM-EX files and I bring these into FCP via a Sony SxS external Thunderbolt reader, edit
and share to Facebook. I have an orange LaCie Thunderbolt drive that store my Library and Project files. I have done this 70+ days in a row w/ zero problems. Now, any time I try to get tomorrow's video ready, FCP crashes
I re-start FCP, my Mac (I use a new MacBook Pro that works seamlessly).I run latest Mavericks OS.The only different thing that happened otherwise is I got some TuneUpMyMac freeware on my Mac when I restart which I never chose to get and cannot delete this because it doesn't show up and I am concerned it is a virus that is messing up FCP

Final Cut Studio :: Extract Middle Portion Of Video Frame As Separate / Smaller Video
Aug 21, 2014Someone at work recorded a screen capture video. Within the frame, there's good material but a lot of garbage around the edges that I don't want (what Sally Hogshead would call "screen crapture"). The good stuff lasts the entire duration of the clip, is not perfectly centered, and does not move at all in its placement or change size throughout the clip.
If I crop or trim, I can eliminate the garbage, either making it transparent or black (there's no other clip beneath it to show through) easily enough. Is there a way to then export just the desired portion of the video frame (the non-cropped good stuff) as its own video at a smaller frame size?

Apr 18, 2009Is it possible to move an item from the "More" section of the Contextual Menu up to the main section? In the attached screen shot you can see an item "Snag Path Unix" at the very bottom. I use this function about 100 times a day and it is very inconvenient that I have to go through a submenu for that.

So, with that in mind I would like to understand which of the apps listed in the title I should go with (iMovie, FCE, FCP). All I want to do is edit movies of my kids for burning to blu-ray (i know i have to use toast 10 for this). I would like: nice transitions (but mostly will just use fade in/out and wipe), a few titles at the beginning and sub titles now and then, the ability to use mp3 files as background music and mix the video soundtrack with the music soundtrack, ability to create chapters in both dvd and blu-ray Which software would be best for me? Also, do i need anything in addition to toast 10 and the above editing software to be able to author blu-rays with chapters and nice backgrounds to the menu/index bit of the disc?

Mar 26, 2012My mac mini is an i5 2.3ghz with 8 ghz RAM with a 240 GB SSD. I import and edit a lot of videos using imovies and final cut. a week or so ago final cut x started slowing down a lot and crashing and then imovie started wit hthe same simptons, i've tried reinstalling both, deleting the full .plist and preference files, i tried installing a fresh lion install and then installing just imovie and final cut and the same thing happens. does anyone have any idea of what the problem might be ? the fact that i used a fresh installation of lion and saw the same issues makes me believe it's a hardware issue but nothing else seems to slow down or have problems. Is it maybe the RAM?

Sep 11, 2014I have the latest iMovie. 2014 version. I want to make a music DVD. To access individual songs, chapters are needed. The latest iMovie doesn't have chapter creation. I know that iMovie 9 allows making chapters, but when I tried that, it worked, but the quality of the movie suffered. The picture quality looked less clear. I will download the trial version of Final Cut Pro X..The chapter creation in iDVD is not good enough and I can't find any other DVD creation software that does it.

May 2, 2010I tried doing several things such as flattening the images, changing the resolution, using different file formats. I tried making the images exactly 1920 by 1080 which someone mentioned was the px dimensions that imovie uses and that didn't work.
The only time the image seems clearer is when I go to show photo settings, which is weird.
These images were originally raws so I can make them whatever size is needed for imovie. I just need to know what it likes best!
I was thinking I might not be rendering them properly. I imported it into idvd and it rendered it that way. Is there another way I can do it maybe?

Mac Pro :: Locking Up - 8 Minute Startup?
Feb 14, 2008In the past couple of weeks I've been having issue with my workstation locking up, the first couple times it only happened when activating expose, I'd have a bunch of apps open(final cut, photoshop, bridge, entourage, +) and it would freeze when I activated expose when all the windows were shrinking.
In the past week though it's been happening out of nowhere, still with final cut and other various apps open but no warning, but now the screens don't freeze they go blank, but the tower doesn't sound like it's powering down or doing anything besides the norm. It almost seems like a video card issue.
However just minutes ago it happened again, screen went blank(thank god my final cut autosaves every 5 minutes). Did a hard restart and logged in but after my desktop picture loaded nothing was happening, spotlight was up in the corner(not the whole menu bar) and mousing over spotlight showed a beachball. Another hard restart and same thing, so I just let it sit for a while and after 7-8 minutes of sitting there with just my desktop image the rest of the os finally loaded. I was getting worried as I have deadlines and one of them is tomorrow. This machine is usually in use monday-friday 9-5.

quicktime 7.3.1(can't upgrade to 7.4 or 7.4.1 because it causes issues with after affects rendering & were getting a Red cam which the latest quicktimes don't work well with)

500gb system drive
2x 500gb drives in mirrored software raid

Anyone else having this issue or have a solution?
Also our other editor has noticed his station(almost exactly the same but with 8gb ram) has been running a little slower than it should be as of late.
OS X :: Screen Dims When Not In Use After One Minute
Feb 12, 2009My screen dims after no use for about a minute. I have it set to do that after 15 minutes. I minute is too annoying (like if watching a video or something with no user input). Anyway, how do I make it stop doing this. It does not seem to want to go with the 15 minute setting I put in for screensaver.

Dec 13, 2009I have a 24" Imac that I bought in the summer of 2008. It has the 3.06 GHZ processor, 4 gbs ram, 1TB HD and the Nvidia 8800 gs video card. About a week ago it locked up while I was installing divx for some videos I am working. The beachball of death started spinning, I let it sit for almost 4 hours and it never worked itself out. The mouse still moves but the screen it totally locked up and the music stops(if some is playing) every time this happens. I repaired premissions and repaired the disk with disk utility (strangely when running disk utility it does not lock up) then even made a disk image of my HD with disk utility just in case the HD is failing. I also ran the hardware test from the startup disk, it found nothing. It usually locks up within 20 mins of being turned on, even if i just turn it on and leave it, running no programs. Any ideas what might be going on?

I made a .7za passworded archive and threw it on Dropbox, but now I can't for the life of me extract it on a MacBook running Leopard. I've tried 7zX and Keka, but both of them are determined to create either a .7z or .zip archive rather than extract the .7za. What am I not getting here?

Jun 30, 2005I have a few .rm files (RealAudio 10 AAC), and have done a "container swap" so that the AAC is now in a QuickTime container, and is therefore readable by iTunes etc. The problem is that my iPod won't read these QuickTime files. How can I extract the AAC data into an .m4a file that an iPod can play? I have QT Pro.

OS X :: Clicking Noise Every Minute From Macbook - How To Fix It
Jan 22, 2009Not sure from where in my macbook it's coming, but it started recently. The only thing that changed recently is that i relocated it to a different city, but i don't see why that would cause this. Clicking isn't really the right word to describe the noise...it's like a sweeping click. "Shtock." And it gets louder if i increase the volume on my computer, but it's definitely not coming from any application. And it usually goes off every minute, but sometimes there are breaks of two minutes or so.

Aug 9, 2010Right click multiple zip files on Windows Explorer and there you have a handy "Extract to" option where you can select to extract all the files to a single folder. How to do the same thing on the mac? Not using terminal, not opening each file and doing the extraction, not opening it with stuffit where it extracts to a folder automatically, i'd like to do the exact same thing that I can do on windows... which is extract X zip / rar files to a specific folder that I can choose, just by right-click.
