Have new MacMini... need to connect both a display VGA and a separate digital projector but there is only the HDMI to VGA port. Could I use the Thunderbolt port for that purpose, and if I can, do I need a special cable and connector to VGA?

I guess I can turn the question around and ask how many differnt ways are there to attach a monitor to a MAC MINI?

I have a fresh install of Windows XP, service pack 2 on a boot camp partition on my macbook (13" first gen aluminum case) and a Apple LED Cinema Display attached to the mini display port.
I can't seem to make the Cinema Display the primary display (the "Use this device as the primary monitor" checkbox is always greyed out in the Display Property Settings tab). I also can't shut the macbook lid and continue to use it closed (with kb, mouse and monitor attached) like I would when booting OSX.
Is there some other way to make the Cinema Display the primary monitor, so I can leave the macbook closed when booting into Windows?
The old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable). The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results. The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.
View 14 Replies View RelatedJust bought a Samsung 2333SW Monitor and plugged it into my Mac Mini. The screen looks like the monitor was dropped (psychedelic) when the desktop is displayed. It worked fine on my 17" Samsung monitor, but not the 23".
I exchanged the monitor, and its not the monitor. I was told its the driver on the Mac. I cannot find any driver online for my Mini through Apple, or even at the Samsung sites.
Is there a noticable difference between using a mini DP DVI vs mini DP VGA to external monitor that has both types of inputs?

I have always wanted a mac and for the most part it has been money in past years that have kept me away. Aside from apple.com tutorials and playing around a few times at my local BestBuy I know very little about using them (or any computer for that matter). Between this forum, available books, and ease of use I figure it'll all work out. I do have a couple of specific questions and would greatly appreciate some advice. For me I have to go mini because I have an eye disease, and some other eye related issues that make me extremely sensitive to the LED backlit glossy displays that the imac and macbooks use. Even when dimmed. So I have no choice if I am to own a mac now, it's mac mini or nothing.

Just wanted to double check before I purchased it.
So our church just purchased a nice refurb iMac to use for media presentations during weekly worship services. We have a projector with a VGA cable, so I bought a mini display port to VGA adapter from apple so that we can connect our shiny new iMac to our big screen.
However, when we attempt to connect our VGA to our adapter, they don't fit together properly. It's like the screws on the VGA cable aren't long enough to screw into the adapter...thus, the cable won't stay connected to the adapter (it just falls out).
Someone suggested getting an S cable to replace the VGA cable, but Apple tells me there's no adapter to link the S cable to the iMac. I'm absolutely clueless...surely there is a way to connect my wonderful new iMac to the big screen.
Any ideas?

I have a cheap hdtv. when i connect my macbook to it it doesn't get a signal (via mini dvi to hdmi) until i click "detect displays" on my laptop, then "gather windows," then when i set the display to the proper resolution (720) the image appears on my tv without a problem.
I just got a mac mini, and since i don't have two monitors I cannot use this trick. I get no image on my tv.
I started up my macbook like every morning and tada, the external screen was black, I thought thats strange so I unplug the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter and plugged it back in, the macbook screen turned blue for a second like it does when it recognizes a monitor being plugged but still stays black.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am looking to buy a Wii but don't own a TV due to the ridiculous TV license fee you have to pay here in the UK to own one without being harassed by 'The Man.' Anyway, I own a mac pro which is hooked up to a Belnea 19" LCD monitor - resolution: 1024 x 768 @ 75 Hz. The mac pro uses a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics chipset - don't know if that matters. I have looked at other threads that address this or a similar issue and I am still confused about whether I can connect a Wii directly to my LCD display via an adapter. What I have found in my searching is a box device called the Gadmei TV5821GXGA Gamebox for Wii which claims to allow audio and video feed to a monitor and speakers from a Wii.

Now the audio is working so I know I've got the right channel on the tv but my comp doesn't seem to be recognising that it's plugged into the tv. Is what I'm trying to do posable, basically using my tv as a monitor?
I just bought an LG 20" LCD monitor to use as an external display. It's this one:

The cord that came with it is a D-Sub cable.
I know that I need some type of adapter cord to use it with my Macbook...which one?
The monitor came with the VGA cable, but not a DVI-D cable. Should I get the DVI-D cable and adapter instead of a VGA adapter? Why do I ask, because the adapters both cost $34 each (I'm Canadian) but the catch is for DVI I would have to add an extra $20 for the cable and I'm not sure if it's worth it or not since I'm tight on money.
Should I worry myself over getting a DVI adapter AND the additional cost which is the DVI-DVI cable?Already answered:Just like Windows which makes it super easy, I tried searching but didn't find the right solution... Does anyone know how I can extend the my MBP's monitor to my external as I can do this on my PC -> External but can't get it to work from my Mac.Just to clarify, I want to do this via Leopard, not XP, Vista or 7.
Im confused on what cable I need. It looks like the monitor has a dvi-d connector and my macbook pro is dvi-i. Are they backwards compatible?
