View 3 RepliesI do a home photo editing business. One of a my clients sent me a disc that she zipped to compress because there were a lot of pictures on it. When I try to open it on my Mac Book Pro I keep getting an error message that it cannot find alias and what program do I want to use to open it. It also gives me an option to "fix alias" but it doesn't seem to work. What am I doing wrong? Why can't I open zip files on my Mac Book Pro? I should probably mention that the client also uses a Mac Book Pro and her pictures were in her iPhoto before she zipped them on a disc.

Today I tried opening my keynotes presentation file to make amendments to it and when I double clicked on it, the program loading bar only loaded up a third of the way and then hanged. I then tried to save it to a flash drive and use it on a different computer, but when I tried to copy it over to the flash drive it gave me this error: "the finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "garment styles" could not be read or written error code - 36".
I have tried changing the file extension to a zip, then unzipping it and then renaming it but that did not work.(It wouldn't let me unzip it). I have also looked at the index file name to see if that was the problem, but that is as it should be.
I have also tried uploading it to a website and emailing it and it will not let me.
Is there anyway I can recover this file as I have been working on it for over a month and it is due next week, or will I need to start again?
I have been working on a project and have a completed picture on my flash drive but when I go to open it, it says cannot open because file is empty. It shows that the size of the file is 96 kb and I can see it with the "quick look" option when you left click. This is using CS3 by the way.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHaving had gimp for a few days, I'd like to use it for my default viewing and editing app.
When I click an icon in my image folders, Preview opens it. How can I change this so that gimp opens the pictures instead? Or perhaps have the option of choosing between several apps like Windows allows?
I can open the file with VLC, but no sound.... And a window pops out saying no sound but no solution found..
View 5 Replies View RelatedI wrote up a paper for school, saved it on my flash drive and went off to school.
Only problem is my school is entirely PC, and I didnt remember to save it for word.
I need a program that can convert a pages document to word or let me open it in another program on the PC.
I tried installing open office on the computer here at school but it wont let me. I should be able to install most other programs though.
When my professor asks me who I dont have it done I dont want to say because I use a mac. Well I do, but I shouldn't.
I have been working on a file for days, and my Mac crashed. How do I open the file from IMovie? I have been backing it up to an external drive and I'm not able to open that one either. I've deleted the preference file, but that didn't help.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been sent an important file with the above suffix, and I don't know how to open it. I specified Microsoft Word when asked as that seemed the most logical contender, but I can't open it in any of the formats that offers. At least, I can open the file, but it comes out as a garbled mass of symbols. Please could someone tell me how to change the default for opening it and what to change it to?

Is it possible to open a keychain file in windows?
I transferred a Powerpoint 2008 presentation using a USB memory stick from my new iMac (latest OSX) to an older iMac (OSX 10.4.11) but could not open the file either by double-click or from the Powerpoint 2004 application on that computer. The file icon as transferred is a Zip file and when I double-click iI get a window saying 'Archiving file ...' but it doesn't open. Neither do I get an unzipped icon to open. I confirmed that BOMArchivehelper is enabled and exists on the computer. What am I missing?
View 4 Replies View RelatedIf I open TextEdit, it seems to work ok. But if I open an existing file (RTF), TextEdit opens but is "not responding" (says the Activity Monitor), for about 2 minutes. Then the file I wanted to open suddenly appears and works fine.
How come? And how can I make TextEdit work normally again?
Recently updated MS Office 2004 to 11.5.6. I'm running OSX 10.5.8 on a Mac Pro. Double clicking Word files or dragging them onto the Word icon no longer opens them. My best work around seems to be to open a new blank document and drag the file into that
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently "upgraded" to Snow Leopard and Quicktime X. Since then, there has been one increasingly annoying problem: Anytime a webpage has a movie (more specifically, a movie with its own URL), it opens it up with QT in the browser and automatically starts playing the movie. Despite deleting QT X and reverting to QT 7, the problem persists, no matter the browser (I have 4).
So 2 questions:1. Why is it that this was NOT a problem at all in Tiger (simply disabled the autoplay in QT, worked for everything), but is a huge problem in Snow Leopard?
2. More importantly, how do I fix it without writing a Terminal script that is the length of War and Peace?
I have a large number of addresses for my wifes work on a data base file, address list, on Appleworks 6.2.9. Is there a program that would recognize it or I could export it to. I sure dont want to retype all those addresses!

In Word, when I go File, Open the application hangs. It open the finder like window but it has a huge amount of columns and spans across at least ten screens. I have the spinning pin-wheel and the application reports as not responding. It does not happen when I do file, open recent.
As you can see, there are a bunch of Apps that I have completely lost. I did nothing - at one moment they were there, and then a little later I open up the Apps folder to see this. When I try to click on them, they all say that I can't open the file because it may be damaged or incomplete. I haven't installed anything recently, or messed with any settings. The programs are just gone. Can anyone clue me in on to what I need to do to fix this? I just got this computer last Tuesday, so I doubt I should be having any problems.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a document that I've been working on in Text Edit. When I went to open it today it would not open and I got the message "the file could not be opened because it is not in the right format". I don't remember saving it any differently, last time. The only thing I did was change the font to a larger size, a few minutes before I last saved it. Could it be that it then became such a large document that text edit can't open it or is there something else I might have accidently done.

View 4 Replies View Relatedok trying not to get a panic attack here. I downloaded espionge to encrypt my valuable files and while it was encrypting (AES 128 bit i think) the program froze and I had to Force quit it. Now I try to open my file (that i was trying to encrypt) and it looks f*^&# up. I can't open it, and when I tried to unmount the partially encrypted file, espionage gave me errors that it couldnt recover the original file.
I had basically all my life's valuable accumulated data in that folder (it was 10 Gb+). I will praise anyone to the end of my days that can somehow tell me how to restore my file to its original state. Usefull info:
1) AM planning to pay gazillions for recovery software if need be, but free alternatives are always better.
2) I never secure delete if that helps
3) I still have the .sparseimage for the file created by espionage. (P.S. sparseimage's size looks really close to the orignal, also 10 Gb +).
4) Newest version of OSX, and have an IMac.
5) after incident I haven't done anything (no installations or downloads) apart from writing this.
6) the encrypted file was gonna be in HFS+ i think
I got a file named myfile.dat from my supervisor and he said myfile.dat is a helix database file. I tried to open that file after installing helix server 6.1.5, but I couldnt open it. I am really in a confusion that whether the given file is helix format file or something. Can anyone tell me that how to open *.dat file or how to identify the format from the file extension.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI try to open an Open Office spread sheet and it simply saves the file as another file with the .cpgz extension which does the same thing. This did not happen a couple weeks ago; I think my download for Apple updates may be the culprit. My OS X is now 10.7.3, I believe originally it was 10.7.2 but I could be wrong.
The original document is a zip archive but now "saves as" a .cpgz archive. I have tried the "Unarchiver", which I just downloaded, but it only creates another file with subfolders, none of which appear to have my original spread sheet. (To be honest, I never noticed this Open Office spread sheet file was a zip file until a few minutes ago when I tried to unsuccessfully open it).

Alright so I was making this video that was really really really difficult to do and I got to like 3:00 of it today and I've been saving, then it just freezes and refuses to do anything. I then realise my external drive somehow turned off for a random reason, so I plugged it back in and it started working again, but then I reopened my project and I get this error

I click on ignore all and it's all in the trash, and what really pisses me off about this is that it took me weeks and weeks and weeks of time to do, there's no way I can redo this all over again. What can I do to get rid of the skipped message and make it all work again
I am using Stata, a statistical analysis program. Recently, when I try to open a file, using File Open, the program hangs and I have to force it to quit. I can open files easily if I use Recent files. When the file gets open, I can do everything I should be able to do with the program. Analysis, graphics, etc. It is JUST when I do File Open that it hangs, and it seems to be ONLY with Stata.

Yesterday, I had to re-format my external hard drive so that it could be "recordable" within Pro Tools, which wasn't a major issue, I just had to move everything from my Lacie drive to another drive, do the format, and then throw it all back on. It took a little while but this also included moving my nearly 60gb itunes library. Now that it is on the newly formatted hard drive, itunes doesn't seem to be able to find the majority of the songs any more. I've tried changing the music folder and a few other things, and there is no way I'm going through and doing the "cant find music - click here to find it" palava. Is anyone aware of a way that you can "mass find" all of the music in any way other than starting the library again and adding all the music (I don't really want to lose all of my play counts and ratings if possible!)
