Applications :: Spotlight Doesn't Find Words In Pdf Documents?

Dec 7, 2009

Whenever I'm in a folder which has pdf documents inside and a search a word in the search field in the finder the results are a total mess. It sometimes finds the words inside the pdfs and sometimes it doesn't. What is worse is that whenever I open a pdf with preview, it almost NEVER finds the word I'm looking. It just shows the loading sign and never return results.

OS X :: Spotlight Doesn't Find Stuff - How To Know About It

Mar 28, 2008

I recently lost some bookmarks in firefox. I know these are stored somewhere with the filename bookmarks.html so I searched with spotlight to locate it

It brings up no results - I have 2 HD's but have it set on 'search my mac' which is both of them.

I can locate the file myself through users>library>application support etc but is there a reason spotlight can't find it? I have my preferences set to show everything.

Applications :: Where Do I Find Some Options For System Words

Nov 26, 2009

I haven't gotten a lot of help here, but realize it's more for Mac issues than Microsoft software.I've tried the Microsoft Office forum but there seems to be very little help there.I bought this big, expensive book on Office for Macintosh and have found it worthless- while it is huge- almost too much information to find anything- I have not found one answer to a specific issue I've looked for in it.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Search For Words In Documents In It?

Jun 16, 2012

Lately I have downloaded a lot of files from Google Drive, and I'm trying to sort a lot of documents (262 exactly) by finding a set of numbers and letters that only one kind of document has.

For example, I'm trying to find the documents that have "5R-ET1" to see which documents has those set of letters inside the documents to sort them in a diffrent folder. Is there something in the Finder that can allow me to do this, or is there like this program which compares documents that fits my use?

OS X Mavericks :: Search For Words Inside Documents?

Aug 27, 2014

Sometimes titles do not match the content. If I have a bunch of files with similar title, i.e. Chapter 1, 2, etc., but I want to find the chapter with the jabberwock in it, I used to be able to type "jabberwock" and it would come up in my search window.  Now it's only finding titles. I have so many files on my puter that it's taking me forever to find important documents.  Where did they hide this feature??? Tearing my hair out.

OS X :: Why Doesn't 'About This Mac' Specify Words Snow Leopard?

Oct 9, 2009

Even though this may be a naive thought/ question, it is a honest thought/ question.Since OS X,version 10.6 is marketed as Snow Leopard, and not as 10.6, it seems to me that us relatively new Mac users could benefit from Apple actually using the words Snow Leopard in the "About This Mac" screens.I say this because a lot of tines I hear the question "are you using Snow Leopard", and to a newbie Mac user, it's not immediately clear when you check "About This Mac", unless you know 10.6 is Snow Leopard.

Or is Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and not 10.6? Now remember, all of us start from ground zero in computing savvy.so be gentle with me and if Snow Leopard is actually stated somewhere.

Applications :: Scanning Documents / Cant Find Apps

Mar 1, 2009

So i got this hair-brained idea the other day. I wanted to make a media server (mac mini + external drives shared out to my other machines. Mac mini hooked up to tv.) Then i thought...well i might as well use it as my data server as well. So...id like to find a program (free is good, but cheap is ok =P ) that i can use a scanner, scan in receipts, documents, taxes, etc... and store them so i can go paperless. The app must have a folder structure so i can organize them by year/month/item. I could do this manually, but i figure an app would be more useful

Any mac apps available? I'm a recent switcher (3 months ago) so i havent been able to find anything yet with my searches.

OS X :: Spotlight Won't Result Any Of Folders Or Documents

Jun 29, 2009

Well, I use Spotlight religiously on a daily, hourly, maybe minute basis. I have a ton of organized folders under my Documents and when I search for any of those folders in spotlight no results are yielded. Not even if the whole folder is typed out, or even just partial. I tried typing in many different folder names I have but nothing.

Then I tried typing in spotlight the names of Pages files, Excel Files, Word, etc...you name it. But nothing.

Applications :: Doesn't Find Real Colors When Pick Up Color From Webpages?

Dec 14, 2009

New Mac user here. I'm a webdesigner and would like to have a real color picker that picks... REAL colors. I've got the "Hex Color picker" application [URL] which integrates with the built-in color picker in my iMac but it doesn't find real colors when I pick up color from webpages. EX: Real color: #e8effeWhen I pick it up from my page, the Hex Color Picker tells me this is the color: #e2eafe which is not.Little annoying when you're a webdesigner. It's somewhat important to get the real colors.

OS X :: Spotlight Cannot Find Stuff Recently Added

Jul 9, 2008

Ok, so for the past few weeks spotlight has not been working. It would not find things that I had recently put on my system. So I fiddled around with it by doing this:
sh-3.2# mdutil -E /
/:
No index.

It shot me a no index error. I kept trying different things including deleting the index file through the Finder. I finally turned off spotlight with mdutil -i off /. I restarted and tried to turn it back on and it would give me this error:
sh-3.2# mdutil -i on /
/:
Error: unable to perform operation. (-100)
No index.

Then I did rm /.Spotlight-V100 and deleted the spotlight index and restarted. Now it searches for files and it has all the files in the index, but it no longer does calculator or dictionary searches. Using mdutil -E / returns this:
sh-3.2# mdutil -E /
/:
No index.
mdutil -s / returns this:
sh-3.2# mdutil -s /
/:
No index.

But I can still use spotlight to find files. Typing something into the menubar gives back accurate results without calculator or dictionary results. So what do I do to fix it without a reinstall of 10.5? This is my 2.4 ghz Santa Rosa Macbook Pro. The drive is 160 GB.

OS X :: Won't Work With Spotlight Indexing / Can't Find Options

Mar 25, 2010

I noticed my "spotlight" icon has a pulsing dot in the center of the magnifying glass icon....when I click on it there is a progress bar and it is perpetually "indexing" my hard drive.

Whats this mean? Is my HDD going to fail? Its been going on like this for months. Running Drive Utility, Techtool or Disk Warrior doesn't fix it.

I fixed permissions and repaired the disk off the Snow Leopard book disk, problem persists.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Spotlight Can't Find A Document

I'm using OSX Snow Leopard. Spotlight was unable to find a document in a folder. It found several others that have almost the same name, but not the one I was looking for. By scrolling down in the finder window I found it without spotlight right away.

To better explain my problem:

I was looking for a document that was called "Paperless". Spotlight found several document in different folders like "Paperlessone", Paperless2" etc. But not able to find "Paperless"

I checked the Spotlight options and it says, that it is looking for everything.

OS X :: How To Find My Documents Folder

Mar 11, 2010

I have an iBook G4 that is running OS 10.4.11.

Today, I was attempting to copy my documents folder onto my external hard-drive. I had Finder open and tried to move the icon representing documents (on the lower left sidebar) to the icon representing my hard-drive (upper left sidebar). The documents folder disappeared off of the left sidebar, but was not moved onto the drive.

I know the folder has not been deleted, as I am still able to open documents from it in word. However, I can't find the folder, and I'd like to return it to the sidebar. I have tried going Finder>Preferences>Sidebar, but there is no option to add the documents folder. How can I get it back?
