View 5 Repliesstep by step directions for moving the actual media ‘files’, ie the mp3s, as well as the necessary library files, to an external drive, when ‘keep media organized’ and ‘copy files to media folder’ are NOT SELECTED?I am running OS X 10.6.8 and iTunes 10 [and prefer a solution which does not require updating software. I prefer to maintain my own customized folder and file structure for my mp3s; and have therefore deselected
1] Keep iTUnes Media folder organized and 2] Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library. All the directions in the various posts seem to require selecting these options. Is this critical for success?
From the many posts I have read, it seems there’s more to it than just drag and drop, that I need to ensure that iTunes is ‘pointed’ to somewhere? Not the mp3s themselves, but to a ‘library” [is that yet another copy of the mp3s? somewhere on my hard drive?].
Additionally, over the years I have moved about 45GB of mp3s to ‘storage’ external hard drives to create more space on my laptop. Not ideal interim solution. I am again low on space and have decided to buy new external drive for holding all of my mp3s, ie the 45 GB in ‘storage’ and the remaining 75 GB from my laptop. Ideally, I would like to also keep all my artwork, playlists and ratings and the like [which I guess are in the ‘libraries’???]
Am I correct, that I will need to also move to the new external hard drive that folder which holds the .itl and .xml files and which is named ‘iTunes’??? and then there is another step to link the ‘media’ to the ‘library’ to ‘itunes’?

I've converted to Mac about 6 months ago and I'm loving it. When I was running windows I periodically cleaned out my hard drive. I would like to do the same on my Mac, but don't see any applications?

Also, I may let my dad or mom clear the hard drive but I don't want to let them do so if there is any way they look at the stuff that I've looked at on the hard drive.

I'm drop shipping my 27" imac refurb to OWC for them to install the sdd, ram, etc. Someone here said OWC will clone the hd to the ssd and then the end user went back and did a clean install. Wouldn't it be better if OWC just installed the SSD, left it clean, and I did the install from the disks myself? I mean I assume it's a time issue why they would clone, not fresh install. I have plenty of time to do it. Is it not that simple? Is there something more fangled to it, or is it just running the disks and doing what they say?

I plan on giving my old 160 gig drive to a friend who uses Windows but I want to wipe it clean first. Do I insert my Leopard disc and use disk utility to reformat?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI purchased an external harddrive to back up my entire student drive. The drive had to be formatted to be compatible with a Mac, and I did this with the customer support over the phone. Used basic copy and paste methods to put my information on the ehd. I triple checked to make sure it stayed there, by properly ejecting drive and plugging it back in. Had my mbPro wiped clean entirely, reloaded Leopard, and am now left with just basic applications and files. Plug in the ehd, and it shares the exact same information as my current wiped-clean drive. I made it as an exact replica of my information filled mac, and it is now an exact replica of my empty mac. All documents, music, photos, applications, etc. GONE. This information was valuable to me beyond words, and I need it back. Does TimeMachine have anything to do with this? I have never used this application, but upon plugging in my ehd, it asked for SOMETHING (which I don't remember).
View 2 Replies View RelatedAs the title says, I'm looking for a program to organize and clean up my hard drive. I have an iMac now, but I had a iBook before that and the way I backed up my iBook was by dragging my Volumes folder into an external hard drive. I have folders inside of folder for days. I have my ibook backed up several times that way.
What I would love is a program that did the following
1.) Delete duplicates of everything.
2.) Put all file types into a single file extension folder (put all .doc in a folder called DOCs and all pdfs in a PDF folder, etc.etc.).

I'm in a pretty big mess right now. I was using boot camp with lion and Windows 7 no problem and I wanted to edit the sizes of the partions. It didnt go so well and I ended up losing both operating systems. Now the big problem is when I boot up from the recovery partion I cannot do any sort of formating from the disk utility, it always give me some sort of error. When I try to install lion via web there is no partion that I can Install it to. I can install Windows no problem from a USB drive whcih I have done already. When managing the disk in windows I see 2 of the windows partions, the mac recovery partion, and an 80 GB partition that I can format but I cannot do anything else with. I dont have any images or recovery devices other than the recovery partition.how to get the drive back to mac format so I can re install lion.

i have maybe 30 - 40 currently active projects. These range from re-styling my home, writing essays, organising exhibitions at work, running budgets etc.
Currently I use a combination of OmniFocus, iCal, folders, Mail. OmniFocus is great for my task lists but I'm looking for an app that would allow me to see, for each project, all the relevant source material: pdfs, docs, images, etc
Been using my MBA for 3 months now and noticed that I have lost a large amount of hard drive space, I currently have 40GB free when I have hardly anything on the computer, I have a few freeware apps and about 8GB of Music, thats it, I have looked at where the space has gone but can't figure it out. Is there any such tools for removing stuff that is not used and to do a "Spring Clean" to get rid of anything I don't need?

I live in a home with two roommates and I think one of them has been viewing inappropriate material on my desktop while I'm at work. Is there any way for me to view the history other than through Safari. i.e., IP adress history?? Also, how can I clean my computer/hard drive thoroughly as to prevent incrimination? View 4 Replies View RelatedThis nonsense: To upgrade your Mac to OS X Lion, you must be running OS X Snow Leopard. If you have OS X v10.5 Leopard, purchase OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard now and install it on your Mac. Then buy OS X Lion as a digital download from the Mac App Store- seems very very un-apple.
So let me get this straight: I have to install an outdated OS (snow Leopard) in order to install Lion. ???
Remember when an OS was self contained, not an add-on upgrade feature?
I am puzzled- I would simply like to boot my mac pro from leopard (current os), and install LION on a newly placed, freshly formatted internal hard drive on same computer. Why would i need to have the intermediary step?
The folks at apple store couldn't answer- even the genius folk weren't sure- dissappointing at best-

My collection of iTunes music and movies has outgrown my internal hardrive. So I uncheck Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library. What does not make sense to me however is the check box above. "keep itunes media folder organized". This really confuses me because if I am not moving the files into the media libary why would it want to rearrange the files? So does that mean for example that on my external hardrive its going to move the original source files?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just bought a used MacBook Pro off somebody online to replace my 2005 pre-Intel Power Mac, which still runs great but I'm just tired of lugging it around. The MacBook Pro was erased but still contains some of the old owner's information (computer name, accounts, etc), and before moving files over I'd like to just wipe it clean and reinstall the OS. He did give me the gray discs, but they are for 10.6 (Snow Leopard) but the computer has been upgraded to 10.7 (Lion); I fear by rebooting I would downgrade to 10.6 since that's the disc I have. Reinstalling 10.7 after 10.6 is out because I don't have the login info used to buy 10.7. I've also considered just keeping 10.6 and just upgrading to 10.8 whenever it comes out (likely soon).

I've only really used Mail in a very basic way - for reading email from three email accounts, one work, two Gmail. I've never attempted to organize things in any way. However, I want to clean things up a bit now. I'm getting a lot of work emails - I'm a journalist - and I want to organise them based on which article they relate to. I presumed the easiest way to do this would be to create a folder (a 'Mailbox' I take it, Mailbox > New Mailbox) and drag the relevant emails to the corresponding folder. However, when I do this the emails no longer appear in my overall Inbox, so when I search the Inbox, they don't appear. I've had a quick look around the Preferences, but can't see a simply option for changing this. Am I going about this the right way organising using Mailboxes? Or is there a better way perhaps?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a 1TB external but it's almost full. I have so many backups of Time Machine I made along the way, but I don't need all the Applications folders that have been copied a million times.
What I want to do is consolidate my Movies, Music, Documents, and Photos folders from each partition and that's all I really need. The rest I can wipe so I can clear up half this drive for future backups and such.
if i delete files off my internal hard drive (Macintosh HD), will it still be on my external hard drive or will it just add to it?

View 2 Replies View Relatedkeyboard was gone. anyway, I turned it off and I'm waiting for it to dry. I don't know the real amount of the damages. I know that maybe I will have to bury it, but I have another problem. Computers store enormous amount of important information nowadays... like, for instance, my thesis, very useful in a few months when I'm taking my degree in engineering :-) I have some backups but... the most recent of them were taken by time machine. so I have two questions:
1. In the worst situation, in which I have to buy a completely new macbook because mine drowned in my 5 o'clock coffee... :-) will I be able to get my thesis from my time machine backups? I mean, the HD won't be the same, will it be possible?
2. Now, I'm working on my Linux system... I see it can access the time machine HD... but I can't understand how it is organised. Is it possible to get my thesis (LyX file) with my Linux system? I guess it is not... but I ask it anyway.
Is there a simple way to keep folders and all the folders within a folder organized - my desktop stays arranged but it seems like every time I go into a folder it looks like it has been hit by a bomb - so I go to View/Keep arranged by/Date and everything is fine until the next time I open the folder to discover that - as often as not - it has returned to its' bombed state - I only use one configuration and would like to set it as the default - I have tried doing that by going thru View/Show View Options making any changes and setting new defaults but that doesn't seem to do anything.
