Just wondering, which is better out of VMware and Parralells for running Windows??
So I am trying to open up my bootcamp partition (running windows 7) in VMWare and I get this error message: Cannot open the disk '/Users/brandonquirarte/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp/%2Fdev%2Fdisk0/Boot Camp partition.vmwarevm/Boot Camp partition.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. It was working just fine before the upgrade to Snow Leopard but I am not sure if that has anything to do with it. I had to reinstall Windows 7 after I tried installing the Bootcamp 3.0 drivers so that may be more of the issue. I didn't test to see if would work still when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
View 3 Replies View Related I'm going to college next year and seriously looking at the 13 in MBP. I think it's the perfect blend of portability, power, etc.
However, I will need to run Windows 7 Professional, as I will need to run the app Minitab, which is for PC only.
I was talking to a fellow classmate who i would consider a computer geek. He knows much more than i do and he explained how I could run 7 on a MBP.
Here's what he said:
1.Buy MBP, VMWare 3, a copy of vista.
2. Install the vista into the VMWare 3 and have vista set up as the virtual machine.
3. Go to windows' students 741 webpage and "upgrade" to 7.
4.do the upgrade.
5. Done, now I can start VMWare3 with windows 7 and install any PC apps like Minitab and run with VMWare.
Is this correct? Is there a simpler way? I am a bit concerned with the "upgrade" part of the procedure. I would like to install 7 from the get go but 299.99 for windows 7 pro is too expensive.
had a look on the VMware site but didn't help. I only run my cad programs on xp and this function is really important.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having a very hard time installing doss 6.22 on my Mac. Why would I want too? Well cause of work, we have some a lot of old data at work that was collected over the years using dos programs and I need to go threw it and pull out what I need, when I need it. So having it on my laptop would be great. I have tried both Parallels & VMware with no luck. I can't get them to realize that I have a floppy drive, it's a usb floppy drive. I have 6gig of memory running snow lepoard. I have been thinking of trying the Sun Microsystem software but thought I would ask here first.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Windows 7 on my new iMac and when running it through VMWare it's extremely slow and basically unusable. Thought it would be super-fast on the i7?!
My set up is as follows:
Windows 7 64-bit on 50GB Bootcamp partition
VMWare 3 using 2 processor cores & 1500MB Ram
Things improve marginally if I use the ultra basic visual theme.
I'm currently running XP under VMWare just to run a few old apps, like Lotus 123, without any need for the internet. It's now dead though after too many viruses and everything else the internet put on it without me knowing. Being primarily a mac user now, I don't want to have to learn about, and keep up to date with, antivirus software just to run a few old macros. So I was wondering if I can install an older operating system, such as Windows 2000, without ever telling it about the internet so it will have no connection with it and hopefully not die on me.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBook Pro and sometimes run VMWare Fusion / XP so that I can sync some older Nokia phones I have (that only run on PC Suite). However, my older phones don't utilize cables...you can only sync with Bluetooth or IR.I opened up the Control Panel and looked for a "Bluetooth Devices" icon, but couldn't find one. Then I opened up the Nokia "PC Suite" and Connectivity window and it gave me the option of clicking (ie: selecting to turn ON) Bluetooth and IR, but when I did, it said that this function was not available. What am I missing? My MBP obviously has all the Bluetooth and IR whistles, but when running VMWare Fusion / XP, the computer seems to disavow any knowledge that these options/functionalities are installed and working on the Mac side.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an Airport Extreme network with an XBox 360 hooked up to it via ethernet. I would like to be able to use the XBox 360 as a media extender using the Windows Media Center running in Vista on my MacBook Pro. Vista Ultimate is running under VMware's Fusion and not as a bootcamp partition (not sure if this matters, but thought I'd mention it just in case). The MacBook Pro is using Wi-Fi (N) to connect to the Airport Extreme.
I followed the directions on the [URL] page, and all four things below that are required to be checked (given permission to run) or running as directed, yet I still get the message stating the Xbox could not be found. UPNP is indeed running.
What am I missing? Do I have to open ports on the Airport Extreme, even if the computer and xbox are on the same network? Do I have to open anything on the MacBook Pro on the Mac OS side?
I'm not sure which forum this belongs in, but given that its really a vmware question, I'm thinking that applications is the best fit.
Anyways, if I decide to take the plunge and get windows 7, it will be for the express purpose of running within vmware. I have zero interest in running it in bootcamp (I use fedora and boot into that) so basically which version of win7 would provide the best performance. The 32bit or 64bit flavor
I'm ready to upgrade my MacBook 13" late 2006 model to a new 15 inch pro, and realize that, especially in the college environment where many professors demand windows, I should run it somehow. I've been doing extensive research for the last hour on the best way to run it, however I'm in a complete deadlock. Some people say just do boot camp, but I don't mind paying up to $100 extra if it will really be much smoother. Even when I try to compare the differences between VMware and Parallels (the latest versions of both), I don't see anything hugely significant. Plus, I see just as many complaints about both of them (I'm reading 1-star HORROR STORIES on amazon of each one), and really, really just want a smooth experience. So, my dear MacRumors friends, I come to you for advice. Which of the three programs do you recommend?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just installed VM Fusion 3.0, it is really much faster running Windows Vista with it.
Anyway, my main issue is, when I opened Activity Monitor, I realized that VMF 3.0 runs in the background when the computer start, is there anyway to totally shut it off if I am not using it?
Also, on the top right tool bar, there is a "bi-head" arrow of VMF 3.0, how to get rid of it?
My MacBook Pro hangs a lot when I am browsing the net or even when running VMWare fusion. It has 4 GB RAM. I am using Mozilla firefox for browsing,

Im having trouble with VMware.. If I set the wireless network connection to NAT, the internet works, but my xbox 360 wont show up in the media streaming options in windows media player. However, if I change the network settings to bridged, I lose my internet connection (well.. sometimes it works.. 80% of the time it doesnt..) Connecting to bridged is the only way I can connect to my 360, and only some of the time where the internet will work. Is there a way to fix the problem with bridged or NAT so they both work together?
View 1 Replies View Relatedim using boot camp for windows 7 and recently started to use vmware and ever since then the start up time is horribly long when before it was very fast. it takes a long time to get to the log in screen and then when i get to the desktop it stays black for a while longer. its not the worst thing in the world and a small price to pay to be able to run my boot camp partition alongside os x but i just want to make sure vmware is the culprit because if it isn't i might need to do some more digging to find the real problem.
btw im talking about starting windows through boot camp not through vmware.
I just installed Windows 98 SE in the VMWare Fusion Beta (latest update), and it seems to work very well, except the fact, that whenever I ask it to install the tools, no setup windows pops up, as it says there will in the help file. I also tried Google, but noone else seems to have the same problem.
It really is a big problem, as I can't have a resolution above 640x480 and more than 16 colors, which prevents me from running my retro games like RCT and Theme Hospital.
I'm having pretty bad difficulties with Windows 7 and Parallels Desktop. I know it's not supported yet, but some folk have it working. I can boot up, but I can't install Parallels Tools. I changed the Configuration to "Windows 2008 Server" like someone suggested in another forum, but fails to boot up.
Seems like VMWare are offering a better helping hand than Parallels Desktop - and while it is not supported yet by them, they say that if you use Windows 2008 Server Config everything works apart from sound.
So am I best giving it a bash with VMWare's Fusion? 30-day trial for free. But I'd rather try get Parallels working since I paid for it.
i just installed windows 7 on my mac last night over my vista partition, but now my avg firewall was disabled to i had to reinstall avg, got that fixed, but my next problem is vmware fusion. it just doesnt work, it boots into windows 7 but then i get the blue error screen saying something like windows has shutdown due to a blah blah blah...anyway i need this fixed right away, do u guys know how to fix it or know any alternatives besides parallels?
View 2 Replies View RelatedBefore you ask, I had found some old games a few months ago that I wanted to play for nostalgia sake, so I made some Windows 95 and 98 virtual machines. It was pretty easy actually, since I just used Disk Utility to create images of the install discs. VMWare had a nice guide on their site that helped me get networking setup properly also.
But then I got to thinking, it'd be pretty fun to try and get Windows 3.1 up and running as well. I was able to make images of some MS-DOS 6.22 install disks and got that installed just fine. My problem actually comes when trying to install Windows itself. I was able to get the install files from 2 different sources. The first was just a folder of ALL the install files from 6 different disks, and the second was 7 different ZIP files from 7 different disks. I tried creating a single image from the first source, and 7 different images from the 7 unzipped folders from the second source, but on both attempts I'm unable to access the A: drive in DOS to start the setup. It gives me an error message about reading from the drive, followed by the standard "Abort, Retry, Fail?"
Has anybody else tried to get a Windows 3.1 virtual machine up and running and come across this problem? I even tried Googling for the exact lists of files contained on the 6 disks from my first source in order to try and split those up and make the necessary images, but unsuccessfully.
Is it possible or do I have to install windows 7 through bootcamp for the xp virtualization to work?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI don't know what happened, but since I did the update from a couple days ago, my Windows 7 no longer boots. I really don't want to rebuild my 7 image since it's pretty setup. I do have previous Time Machine copies, but I wanted to visit here for some possible solutions before I go thru it the hard way.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am purchasing my first Mac this week (iMac 27" i7 8gb ram 1 TB ). I am new to the whole Mac experience. I have a few questions I hope someone can give me the correct answers.
I purchased VMware 3.0, but I would also like to use bootcamp (for when I am gaming). Would Windows need a separate installation copy for each? I was concerned about the Windows activation issue. I am not sure if need to activate twice or if Windows 7 will allow it, once for bootcamp and then once for Vmware?
I purchased Windows 7 64 bit upgrade. I am currently running on my PC Windows Vista 64 bit and I have a new OEM copy of XP home 32 bit (unused). I plan on using the already registered copy of Vista to install on my MAC then use the Windows 7 upgrade. Will that work? Will I need to activate Vista before I can use the upgrade?
Can I use an external drive to run windows from VMware (either firewire or USB) or should I invest in the 2 TB upgrade?
im trying to run kai photo soap which is an old windows/classic mac program from an install CD that i have.
When i insert the install CD into my macbook, the ".exe" windows files does not show up....thus preventing me from trying to use Darwine to run the ".exe" set up...
the only files that show up on the CD are the classic mac install files..
How can I run it without WM Ware Fusion or Parallels? Is there an app where I can run it somehow without such programs?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI finally made the switch from PC to Mac buy selling my HP laptop and desktop computers and buying the new MacBook Pro. However, I have licenses for Creative Suite 4 for Windows and still need to run it on my Mac using Boot Camp and/or Parallels until I can afford to jump to CS5 for Mac (this MBP took a big chunk of my cash). I'd like to run Windows using Boot Camp AND Parallels - Boot Camp when I need all system resources and Parallels when I need to hop over to Windows to type a Word document or something quick (got Office 2007 for Windows too).
Can I use both Boot Camp and Parallels with one serial number for Windows 7? If so, how do I install? Would I install Windows on Boot Camp or Parallels first? If anyone has some guidance for installing one copy of Windows 7 on both applications
I am having an issue using some software I have in windows to clone a DVD because when I insert the DVD in my MBP it only shows on Mac desktop.
