Applications :: Archive Utility Compressing Zip Files?

Mar 3, 2009

I want it to UNZIP a zip file, not zip it further, but it keeps compressing it into a .cpgz file instead of opening it.

Applications :: Using Archive Utility.app From Terminal

Mar 5, 2009

Does anybody know if it is possible to send commands or options to Archive Utility.app via Terminal?

It is possible to invoke Archive Utility.app and pass it the path to a zip file, and it will uncompress it. However, I would like to also pass it a destination path, and see what other options it may have.

Applications :: Compressing Files To Smallest Size

May 29, 2009

So I know in Leopard and probably any OS for Mac's you can compress your files, but is there any way to compress them even more? I had a file that was 321mb's and when I compressed it, it brought it down to 317mb's. Obviously that didn't do me any good. Does anyone have a program or another suggestion?

Applications :: Time Machine Compressing / Not Backing Up Files

Mar 30, 2009

I'm using Time Machine (for the first time) to back up my system (Mac Pro w/750Gb internal drive and a firewire 750Gb external backup). However, when looking at the contents of my external backup drive after Time Machine has finished, I notice there is sizeable difference between the amount of data on my internal and external drives. To confuse matters more, I repeated the backup 3 separate times on the same internal volume (357Gb worth of data) and each time Time Machine yielded a different size backup; ranging from 343Gb to 350Gb. Each time I have "erased" the external drive using Disk Utility prior to running Time Machine.

After digging around I found at least some of the difference lies within the Movies_IDVD Projects folder. I have only a few projects but it appears that Time Machine randomly chose a few of the larger ones to compress? Either that or it did not back them up all the way. These files were roughly 2-4Gb in size on my internal and only 200kb on the backup drive. Are there other files that Time Machine is either compressing or not backing up? Should I use Time Machine at all or should I copy the files I want backed up by dragging them to the external? I would like to be able to restore my system to its current state one day if/when my internal drive craps out (including all of my apps, etc.).

Applications :: Software To Extract Certain Files From RAR Archive?

Jul 16, 2010

When I used a PC there was the WIN RAR program where you could see every file inside a RAR archive, and thus choose which files you wanted to extract. I have RAR Expander and can expand an entire directory just fine, but I would like a little control to be able to choose which files to extract. Is there anything that will let me do this on the Mac?

OS X :: Unable To Use Archive Utility

Aug 19, 2005

I zipped up about 3 gigs into a 2.24 gig zip file. I did it with stuffit deluxe, and I had no problems opening it. Then, I sent the file over the network to my roomate and reformatted/reinstalled OS X Tiger, then d/l'd the file back from my roomate.

Now, it won't open! I'm just using the standard OS X BOM ArchiveHelper... it gets like 75% done and says:

Unable to unarchive "filename.zip" into "Desktop". (Error 1 - Operation not permitted.)

Mac Pro :: Compressing Video Files And Getting Kernel Panic

Nov 6, 2008

I'm averaging about 2-3 kernel panic "crashes" daily. I took my MP to the local Apple Store. They ran all of their tests and could not find a thing wrong with it. I've purchased Tech Tool Pro. The TTP diagnostics have come up with nothing. I use machine at work primarily for video editing/compression/authoring. The kernel panic(s) seem to occur when I'm outputting or compressing video files from Final Cut or Sorenson Squeeze.

Here are some of my basic machine specs:
2 x Quad Intel Xeon
5 GB 667 MHz DDR@ FB-DIMM
Video Card: ATI Radeon X1900

Applications :: Utility To Right Click And Move Files Into Folders?

Jan 4, 2009

On the Windows side, I like to right-click and "Send To" except I'd usually prefer it *moves* selected files instead of copies. Is there a Mac utility where I can right-click and move to configurable folders? It looks like the only "folder" by default is the Trash ("Move to Trash"). I know there's the left-hand collapsible pane with Places, but I don't want to clutter it up with too many folders that I could neatly tuck into a contextual menu.

Applications :: Using ITunes To Create Digital Archive Of Audio CDs

Jun 1, 2010

I've been wanting to create a digital archive of all my music. I want to accomplish two things
1. Put all my CDs in their original quality on my hard drive and regularly back it up. Hopefully, once this is done, I can discard all of my CDs or put them away in a hard to reach box, thereby reducing clutter.
2. Have all of my songs easily accessible via a iPod/iPhone/etc. I have only about 150 CDs.
I'm a PC user, but am thinking about getting a Mac Book Pro. As of now, it looks like iTunes and Windows Media Player would let me accomplish #1, but since I want to get #2 as well, I've decided to use iTunes. But I have a ton of questions and am hoping to get get some answers. Right now, I just pop the CD into the drive, and get iTunes to Import the CD with the only changes to the default being that I ask it to import to WAV (which is not the default). However, I use the default WAV settings.

Am I doing the right thing with respect to importing for best quality? Why does iTunes offer additional configuration for importing to WAV files? There are settings for sampling rate and such, although I'm just using the defaults for those. Would there be any difference at all between a rip using Windows Media Player and a rip using iTunes? I have enabled error correction in the "import settings". Is there a way to tell if there were no errors, if an error was encountered and corrected, or if an uncorrectable error was encountered, while importing a CD? For many of the CDs that I've imported so far, Apple does not seem to have the artwork. Is there a recommended place to get artwork for iTunes and what would be the procedure for adding artwork? After I have imported a CD in WAV, how do I convert that to something smaller that I can then download to an iPod? Is it possible for iTunes to keep the song in multiple formats?

Plus, I don't want to add a whole sound library in the middle of my music collection for iTunes.
