Applications :: Long Shot: Script To Change Desktop When Application Is Launched?
Mar 26, 2009
I know this is a long shot but does anyone know of a script (or fancy trying to write one!) that will change a desktop pattern when you launch a particular app.
Basically I'd like to have a couple of desktop patterns with all the shortcut keys for particular apps but don't want them up all the time, only when I'm using that app.
Ideally, quitting the app would return to the normal desktop pattern.
when I went to click into my word program I got this message The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "0<Microsoft Word><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_ColorSync><>"I went into my Activity monitor and there is no HP processing there is a Microsoft AU Daemon running. should I quit that? I have a powerbook G4 and there are no new software updates for my computer.
This morning I woke up to finding my MBP shut off... I must've pulled the powercord in my sleep. No problem there, I needed to calibrate my battery anyway. What I want to know is what would cause transmission to use most of my processing power, just on start up? this screen shot below was taken while waiting for the application to start. Transmission is up and running now, but why would it take 15-20 mins to do so?
Just a strange problem here - when I launch an Application from my Dock (not from the Applications folder) my screen shows up the desktop and then the app. For example I am running Safari now but if I were to open Address Book from the dock, the desktop shows and then the Address Book opens.
Every question I see about changing the screenshot format here seems overly complicated, or requires installing another app.
I'm pretty sure screenshots used to always be png, but I just noticed that they are now jpeg. I do a lot of graphics work and want to capture as png.
Here there are instructions for code in Terminal. Is that really necessary? Shouldn't it just be a preference somewhere? (I will always use cmd+shift+4 to take the screenshots)
I've been using the TweetDeck app and the stock black icon sorta melts into my "Black Shelf" dock. I found a couple of icons to change it into something different, only one problem. It wont let me!
Originally I was opening the "get info" and copy/pasting the images If that failed, I was using img2icn and that worked out. But this wont let me change anything! Even when I've unlocked it!
I launch my apps via quicksilver (which is a god) and then from there will hit ⌘+(1-9) to head to any of my menu bar links... or at least that was my usual gig. The recent hick-up is when safari is launch (whether or not it is from q.s. or the dock) a new window opens up, but then deselects it's self, as if a different window was openend and selected... but no, there's nothing else. Therefor I can't command anything with out physically selecting the window with my mouse. Rather annoying. That or, ⌘+Tab to a different program then back to safari.
I have a problem with a new installation of Lion. When I shutdown my computer, all the applications are launched by default. I have unchecked the option "Reopen windows when logging back in". When I go to my login items in the preferences system, any application is present and when I click right and go to the options tab, the option "Open at login" is unchecked. The applications who are launched are Mail, NetNewsWire, Chrome and iTunes.
Here's a screen shot of my applications folder, Can anyone explain or help me with this?I find this strange that it appears that I have two versions of Logic installed on my computer, Is there anyway I can "merge" or "trash" one without losing any data?
I'm a freelance TV Assistant Producer and I'm wondering if it's possible to use Automator to help send out my CV to potential employers in my address book on a monthly basis.
I have Seagate external drive. In the past few days a message pops up "The disc was not ejected properly", in spite the icon is still on the desktop.
I restarted the finder and nothing showed up, empty desktop. I forced shot down, and I could not log in with my password, because the keyboard would not type. I shot down the computer holding the power button, and disconected the external drive. I could login, bot my outlook 2011 would not start and Adobe acrobat would crash. I rebuild the outlook, and restarted the computer. Went back to normal so far.
Question, what caused all this mess,
a) is external Seagate drive duying (Disk utility said that the drive is OK)?
b) Did I catch a virus?
Also every time I force shot down, I have to rebuilf identity for outlook 2011. Very disturbing. I never had these issues with Snow Leopard.
I have a thumb drive that if i plug it into my MacBook Air in the left usb port, it takes at least 3 minutes before it shows up on my desktop, sometimes MUCH longer. If i plug it into the right USB port, it shows up after a minute. If I plug this same thumb drive into a PC, it shows up within seconds. If i plug a different thumb drive into either USB port on the Air, it shows up within seconds.
It's a FAT32 thumb drive, and i've already tried reformatting it and the same stuff happens. I've even had disk utility check it out and nothing's wrong. I'd guess the thumb drive is bad but it works instantly if i plug it into a PC, so guessing that's not it. It's a 10.6 MacBook Air.
I have a couple of software word processing applications that just show a bent upper corner on a blank sheet with the letters 'TXT' on the bottom for an icon in Snow Leopard. How can I make the application (any application) display a custom icon unique to each application instead of the generic looking icon (described above), when I save a file. I also am now getting a similar bent corner icon ...with XLS when I save an Excel file ...instead of the one it used to generate when I was using Tiger. The default icon in Tiger had a green colored header on the top of the default icon when you saved a file. It also had the Excel icon in the upper left corner. I can see the default icon for Excel when I do the get info ...but it doesn't display like that when I have the file in a folder. How can I get it to display the correct icon when in icon view in a folder? I know how to change an icon to a custom one individually ...or quantities all at once by copy and paste in Get Info window. I'm wanting to have the application 'create' the desired icon when I am finished making a new file from an application by itself without having to copy/paste to change it to the one I want.
When I want to contact anyone from their "contact Us" link on their web page my computer opens "Mail" automatically. I use gmail and I would like it to be my default email application. How do i change the default email from "mail" to gmail? I use snow leopard.
For some reason when I click on application, my applications are now in a folder. Before they where lined up for me to see. Now I must open up the folder before I can choose my app.
I just got a new mac and have accidentally set up something weird with my applications. I can only ever have one application showing on the desktop although I have a few programs open. As soon as I click on another application on the dock the current window open will hide and the new one will show. It's nothing to do with spaces or anything, I haven't got that turned on. The only way that I can have different application windows open is if I hold 'command' and 'tab', and select a different application.
i have a macbook pro. i've looked through a lot of tutorials on youtube and apple support but i wasn't able to find the answer i was looking for.
my question is
how do i import a video on my desktop to the application imovie 09?
i started to work on my killer intro vid and the rest of the vid happen to be on my desktop. however, when i attempt to drag the video to imovie09, it bounce right off.
if there is nothing i can do, would it be possible to use the isight cam from imovie09 to make a video? i am not talking about making a video about myself. it actually pertains to an object ill be holding and talking about it. the only struggle is turning the object and holding it up. i know it can be better done with an actually camcorder but is there another way with the isight app on my computer?
I have an application on my desktop that is attached to a webserver updating account that I need to modify the settings for. Problem is, I've forgotten the password and their 'forgot password' thing isn't responding after a few hours. If I could just reveal the password that's saved on the desktop application then I wouldn't have to mess with it. I looked all though Keychain, but it doesn't seem to be anywhere in there. Back in PC days there were tons of applications that could just reveal what was behind the little dots. After about 20 minutes of searching, it seems that the mac world offers no such convenience. Anyone know some other way around this? I mean, it must be stored somewhere on here. The application is remembering the password.
how I could change my settings so that when I double-click a file, it opens in a new "(default)" application. I have noticed that I can right-click -> open with -> other... -> and click "always open with" but it has never worked once. Where can I manipulate this setting?
After applying an image to be an application's icon, the image does not appear but instead the image of Preview appears with the image's type (for example jpeg) on it. I'm not really sure what I'm doing wrong, other than possibly using the wrong image type. Is there a proper image type to use (I've tried pretty much every type but none of them seem to work), or do you have to change icons from somewhere other than 'get info'?
You can assign the application in the dock to a desktop. But can you hide the application in the dock in the desktop where it is not assigned? That is, the dock in each desktop should show only the app icons that are assigned to that desktop. Possible? Within OS X or via an app?
I'm an idiot. For all my contacts, I put the company that the person works for in the Suffix field of the Address Book entry. I would like to change all my contacts such that the information in the Suffix field is moved to the Company field. Is there an application or an AppleScript that I can use?
I was about to order an iMac when I noticed that the font size of screen menus and application menus barely visible. When asked they said it cannot be changed at the Apple store that is ridiculous. Even in Windows XP or I have done that 10+ years ago or more, in windows environment.
