Applications :: Backup Itunes Library On HDD?
Aug 25, 2010I want to backup my itunes library, but it says that I need to install a blank disk. Is there a way to backup the library to an external harddrive instead?
EDIT: I tried this... please tell me if this was the correct thing to do. I basically just went to Finder > Music > iTunes and dragged that whole "iTunes" folder to my external harddrive that was plugged in... and its copying it now

Oct 23, 2009I try to backup all my tracks purchased on iTunes, but the Back Up button does not work (see image). When I press it, nothing happens. Same for the Cancel button. iTunes does not 'hang' though, because I can close the dialog with the cross mark in the upper right corner, and I can choose other combinations in the dialog (which I do not really want). Does anybody have the same issue? I'm using Windows XP (SP3) with the latest version of iTunes (9.0.1.8). I am able to burn DVD's using other software so that should not be the problem.

I finally started buying some blu-ray titles and want to be able to have a compact backup in itunes and view them while traveling with my MacBook. I would already be fine with a Windows solution since I use bootcamp for DVD backup anyways.

Jan 30, 2010I'm using a MacBook running 10.6.2 with iTunes 9.2 and an iPhone 3G. I just did an erase and install of the OS on the MacBook and am working on restoring things from my Time Capsule backup. In order to get my iTunes back the way it was so I don't have to start all over, what do I need to copy over?
So far, I've copied the following:
~/Music
~/Library/iTunes
~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync
Are there any other directories / files that need to be copied over? I'm trying to avoid having to set up my phone, playlists, genius info, etc all from scratch. Do I also need to copy the iTunes application itself from the backup or should I be able to use the fresh one installed from Software Update? They are both iTunes 9.2.

May 6, 2010Looks like in syncing my iPad, it tries to place the backup of my device in MobileSyncBackup on my C boot drive, which is an SSD without space, even when my iTunes install and iTunes library folder is in my 2 TB D drive.
Is there any way to permanently make iTunes place its backup elsewhere?

Sep 19, 2010When I was setting up the MBP, I opted to restore from a Time Machine backup and expected everything to go off without a hitch.
When I opened iTunes though, everything was blank -- no songs or videos were listed at all. My playlists were still there though but also blank.
When I checked my Music folder in Finder, everything was still there so I tried manually adding one mp3 to see if it would show up on iTunes. iTunes just played the mp3 but it still wouldn't show up in the Music list.

Nov 16, 2009Basically somehow my iTunes got jacked up.. just the music part of it.. Anyway, they are all songs from my CDs or mp3's, but just as a failsafe, I would like to backup my entire iTunes library to my external hdd.
I would then like to delete all the songs from my iTunes, and from my iPhone. *edit* figure'd out how to remove all the songs from my iphone.. just unchecked all songs and sync'd.. now I just need to backup itunes and delete everything from it, then reput what I want back into itunes and resync.. sweet
After which, I would like to rebuild my iTunes library using my mp3's and CD's and basically start from scratch.. so that this time around I can properly name songs/albums/artwork/etc
Then I want to take this new iTunes library, and fill my iPhone back up with my new Library in Itunes..
so basically I just want to backup my itunes just incase for some reason I cannot find a particular CD or mp3 in my collection.
Just for the record, I am using a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard 10.6.2, and I have an iPhone 3GS 32GB running the latest 3.1.2 firmware (jailbroken using blackra1n rc3)

i use 1 external tb to back up everything
i back up about 725 gb if stuff and when i go to run my TM it tells me i only have 150 or so GB of space to back up the aforementioned 725gb.
Maybe i misunderstood TM, but cant i back up multiple days without using the same size of backup? i.e. i back up january 1st, december 1st and november 1st and it wont need 2.175 TB of space?

Sep 7, 2010I just updated my iTunes but it appears it deleted my library. This sucks because I have spent HOURS upon HOURS sorting it, renaming crooked song titles, finding covers and all that stuff. I used time machine to back up my computer like 5 days ago, but I can't figure out how to use it. I wish I could just select that given day (when I made my last backup) and make it turn everything back to what it was back then.How do I do this exactly? I don't care at all if I have to go back to the old iTunes (obviously they will fix this eventually!) - I just want it to look like it did a few days ago.

May 28, 2009I'm looking for an app that will allow me to specify which folders I want to copy to my external drive, updating existing files within it and copying new ones.
I don't want to backup settings, my whole harddrive nor make a bootable backup. Just something to backup what I want to backup and where.
Not sure if Time Machine can do that, but it wants me to reformat my external before I can even find out..and considering how much is on there, I really don't want to have to remove that all elsewhere while doing so. [Don't think I could anyway, none of my internal drives have that much space.]
So, does anyone know of a relatively painless backup app that could do simply what I want? Doesn't sound all that complicated in comparison to some of the more convoluted backup apps I keep finding.

Oct 26, 2008I am getting the following error from Time Machine when doing my first backup. The startup disk being backed up, and the TM disk are both the same size.
Macintosh HD: 465.44 (total); 393.99 (free); 71.45 (free)
Time Machine: 465.44 (total); 465.29 (free)
The Time Machine error is: Quote:
"This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 472.7 GB but only 465.3 GB are available." why would this be? Other disks are excluded from the backup, and Time Machine is telling me that it needs more space than it actually needs. What should I do?

Dec 11, 2009I have looked into this a lot already. It is to much that Time Machine backs up every single hour! It would be nice to set it to something like 3 or 5 hours. I have tried a 3rd party app to do this, but... If my computer was off or asleep when it was supposed to back up, it would get an error. It would not just do the backup when i turned it on or when it came out of sleep like stock Time Machine does. I have also seen a way to change the time incraments in the Terminal.(I am very good with it, not a noob) I have tried this and it screws up time machine completely. Maybe it does not work with the newest OS X. By the way... I have a 2010 MacBook Pro, got it 2 months ago.
Does anyone know a solid 3rd party app, that will work seamlessly. Or has anyone changed the time in Terminal and are currently using something different than 1 hour. There is a lot of examples online, but I would like the codeing that you literally used.

Jul 4, 2012I had a small problem on my iphone4 these days, often when I was going to unlock it by sliding the bar, it froze. I've seen that it was quiet a common problem so I've read some tutorials and I basically restore my phone. Before that I obviously did a backup on Itunes. Following the tutorial, when after restoring Itunes asked me if I wanted to restore it as a new iphone or I wanted to backup the old settings, I chose the first option. My phone was like a new one, empty with just the basic apps. I wasn't worried, I could see my backup still there, so I double clicked on the name on my iphone and he selected restore from the backup choosing the one I did before the restoring. At that point I had a bad surprise; a message came out saying: "itunes could not restore the iphone... because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iphone that is being restored"... I've tried so many things, I even recovered from a time machine a backup file from April but didn't get any better. I had two years of pictures, videos and other stuff in that backup

Feb 4, 2012With Itunes 10.5.3 recently installed Ipad backup fails. Backup starts, then freezes for a second or so, then other synchronisation steps continue. After all synchronisation steps are finished, a message pops up like: "Backup failed because connection to ipad was lost"
Had that issue with earlier version of iTunes before. No problem though with 10.5.2.

Feb 19, 2012My laptop got stolen a few weeks ago, i've replaced it with a new MBP, and fortunatley I done a full backup at xmas time, so my computer is just like it was on the 23rd of December 2011. However, my iphone has a ton of new photos, music and playlists on it since that date.
Now I want to keep all these tracks, playlists and photos, but i don't no how to go about it.
If i plug it in to the MBP now, won't itunes back sync and delete all the new stuff?
