Applications :: How Do I Create A Self-updating Playlist?
Aug 4, 2010
Currently have a playlist for all songs on my local HD. Is there a way for the playlist to automatically update and add/remove songs as I add/remove them from my "Music" folder? I'd rather have this automated than manually adding songs each time I download them.
I am trying to figure out how the live updating feature on smart playlists works.
I created a simple smart playlist with one rule "Media Kind is Music". I ticked the box to "limit to 25 items selected by random". I also ticked the box for "live updating". When I clicked OK to save the smart playlist, iTunes selected 25 songs from my music library and put them in the smart playlist. I then synced the smart playlist to my iPhone. The same 25 songs appeared in the smart playlist on my iPhone. So far, so good.
Then I played a number of the songs in the smart playlist on my iPhone. I also played songs from the smart playlist in iTunes on my MacBook Pro. I exited and re-entered iTunes multiple times. I re-synced my iPhone several times as well. And guess what? The smart playlist, both in iTunes and on the iPhone, still contains the same list of 25 songs that were selected when I first created the smart playlist.
I'm putting together a huge selection of reggae and island music for a luau and was wondering if, when I transfer the playlist to my iPod Touch, if it will keep the order of the songs or rearrange them to alphabetical. I'd like to keep the order I put it in, not alphabetical. Thoughts?

Long time itunes user and have never had any issues creating a smart playlist untill recently. I have a large libary 16,500+, am a itunes match user, and do use icloud. For the last couple weeks any time i try to create a smart playlist the results are always empty. I have tried simple requests like artist contain so and so, genre is rock, time is over 1:00 etc etc and nothing will populate. Also if i edit and old smart playlist by adding another condition it wipes it out for example i have a playlist with rock songs if i add the condition to only have songs over 1 minute i get an empty set. I'm sure it is a simple solution but i can not figure out what i have done. Only major changes i have made recently are getting an ipad and joining itunes match other than that i have made no changes to my settings or network (at least that i know of).

I'm trying to create a smart playlist with the following properties:
1) Every time I play it, it selects a different random set of songs.
2) The playlist plays for a fixed duration, then shuts off. (I like to go to sleep to music, but it wakes me up in the middle of the night if it plays for too long.)
The best I've been able to come up with is to set "not played in the last xx days", "Limit to yy minutes selected by random", and "live updating". However, there's a problem with this: as soon as one song has played, it's purged from the list, which causes live updating to replace it with a new song. As a result, this creates a list that plays forever, since new songs are continuously added to replace the ones that have been played. I tried turning off live updating, but then I'm stuck with the same songs over and over. I also know about the trick of just using "select random" and deleting the contents of the list, so that live update will repopulate it, but that won't work on an iPod without doing it in iTunes and then re-syncing.
i am currently using snow leopard, and I am waiting for this summer to update to mountain lion. Right now, I need the a new feature of imovie for my project, so I am thinking about buying Life 11 at this moment. However, I just want to make sure that, will updating my OS X includes updating my imovie, iphoto and everything? If yes, then I probably dont need to buy Life 11 to update my imovie now/
I searched for many forums and got no answer? Maybe it's impossible but I heard I find the best pro users right here So my problem is: I have my big CD's collection imported into iTunes /Apple loseless codec/ - now I have my music in my hand /apple remote/ My wife has the same on the same mac - collection not remote In IT we have 2 playlists /her and mine music/ We can search for songs, bands, CD name etc. However, problem starts with the Front Row There is no possibility to have the same option, just scroll down a playlist? If I have 10 Cd's there's no problem - with 800 there is Hope, you know the trick or certain answer how to use FR in the same way as IT.
I'm actually not even sure where to post this. I just attempted to burn an iTunes playlist to CD using my MacBook Pro. However, when we attempted to import the cd to my Niece's windows computer the CD title as well as each song were titled "we suck". This is very odd because the titles are correct when viewing the CD using my MacBook. Has anyone ever seen this before? Could this be a virus or something?
For some reason I'm no longer able to add mp3 files to an iTunes playlist. I can play the songs individually but can't make a playlist with the files. When I try to drag and drop them they just get a red cross and they don't get added.
I would like to go from looking at the Library and all the albums together to going to just a single album. I used to be able to do this by changing the behavior of the arrows next to the song information for Album to direct to the album in the Library instead of the iTunes store.
However, in iTunes 10, it appears that the arrow links are removed permanently. Is this true? If so, is there a simple way to go from a highlighted song in a playlist or the Library directly to the song's album like you used to be able to, without using the genre/composer/artist/album browser (I have too many albums for that to be efficient, and this is one instance in which I think search is not the right solution).
I've found since updating to iTunes 10.1 that my playlists occasionally skip to the next track during playback. This has never happened before. I haven't tried to replicate it elsewhere, but did try a local reinstall. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
I have a fair bit of music in iTunes, and it has bugged me somewhat that often when I want to delete many files something it's easier to go into a playlist to find them. But when I delete them from there it only removes them from that playlist, not the computer. I guess this makes sense, and I suppose nowadays space isn't often a problem.
In case this isn't clear, what I want to do is go into a playlist, then select songs, then delete those songs from my hard drive.
I have a friend that is coming to visit but they wont be bringing their mac. However they want to be able to play some of their tunes on my mac. is there a way to save an itunes playlist and have it playable on another mac? If they logged in through the itunes store or something?
For some reason when I go to drag music to a playlist in iTunes, it will not move. Then I restart the program and it will work, but only for a little while and then it is back to not being able to move again. I tried clearing the preference files and no luck.
I have a playlist where iTunes remembers where I left or skipped a song previously. Even if I play this (play)list from head till toe, so to speak, iTunes happily starts songs in the middle or near the end. Kind of enoying. I have this behavior in only one of several playlists. Is there a way to reset this behavior?
after you purchase songs from the itunes store it goes into the playlist purchased. i loved the way it was sorted. as in once i bought a song it would go to the bottom of the playlist. somehow i screwed that sorting option up. anyone know how to get it back to how it was originally sorted?
Is there a way I can make a playlist of songs that are only in the playlist and cant be found in the music library? In other words an independent playlist with songs not from the library.
Alright, so on iTunes I had a playlist with songs on them. I deleted it, then synced my iPad to it. Now that playlist isn't on iTunes or the iPad. How do I get the playlist back?
Anyone know of an app to auto shut down your mac after it's done running a an iTunes playlist or letting another app run it's course? The Energy saver shut down schedule option is too rigid for me. Basically, I like to listen to a some music as I go to sleep and would love for my mac to shut itself down after it's finished with the playlist. If there isn't a program would anyone know of an applescript that would do that?
i cannot seem to figure it out. my nano is set to "shuffle all songs" in the main settings window, and i want to be able to shuffle the songs in the playlist i listen to while exercising using Nike+. i cannot seem to make this work. ideas?
I am relatively new to iTunes, and have burned dozens of CDs before. However, all of those CDs have been complete albums. I tried to burn my first mix recently, and found that the CD had been burned with the songs in the wrong order.
I must be doing something wrong, but there doesn't seem to be too many areas where iTunes makes it even possible to mess something this simple up, so I pretty confused.
I make a playlist, hit burn CD, select Audio CD, and go. The songs make it, but like I said, in the wrong order. They get organized by album, but I just want the CD to look like the playlist on the computer.
Has anyone run into something like this? It is iTunes 8.0.2.
Alright, so I have two songs by The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and With a Little Help from My Friends. If you don't already know, these songs cut into each other, so if you play With a Little Help right after Sgt. Pepper, it will sound like one song (this was intended). What my problem is is that the way that the songs are sorted (by Artist), With a Little Help from My Friends is before Sgt. Pepper, where it should be vice-versa. Is there any way I can fix this problem, without having to change the way the songs are sorted (I like them organized that way) or creating a playlist? Maybe an Applescript or application?
Is it possible take a playlist of songs and put those songs onto an external hard drive without finding each song in the finder and dragging it into the hard drive? I want to move just a certain few songs from my Mac Pro to my Power Book and I'd rather not waste CDs/DVDs in the process... but getting each file individually would be a huge waste of time. How can I make this process easier?
I have a smart playlist to sync only one season of The Office on iTunes. I hit sync with my iPhone and it doesn't show up as a playlist? How do I get it to? (I have an 8GB iPhone, can't sync the 16GB of The Office episodes I have.)
