Applications :: Hiding Program Related Files (MS User Data / RDC Connections)
Jan 9, 2011
Is there a way that I can hide the "Microsoft User Data" and "RDC Connections" folders that Microsoft 2011 creates. I've tried adding a "." in front of the folder, but it returns an error message that says that folders and files starting with a dot/period are reserved for system files. I then tried using a program called Ghost Sphere which did the job for hiding the folder, but then Microsoft couldn't access the file and just created another...putting me back where I started. So I searched the web for solutions but I couldn't find anything reliable. So my question is, are there any programs or methods that will let me hide a file in the finder but still let it be accessible to the program that created it?
I'm looking to hide a few things on my system that are cluttering up certain areas. I'm a little OCD about how my files are organized and I've noticed some applications Microsoft Office 2008 create mandatory folders and I can't delete them.. so I've picked the next best thing: Making them invisible! Because the application(s) requires a specific file path I can't simply add the "." prefix to the folder. I believe there is a terminal command to add the folder to a list of invisible items but I can't pull up how to do this. I've been searching google for about an hour now. Here is what I've tried and I think I'm close. My goal is to hide the "Microsoft User Data" folder. Terminal: cd /Users/Kyle/Documents/Microsoft User Data/pico.hidden
I have tried very hard to find the answer to my transferring question, but nowhere do I find my answer nor does Apple offer free help or even help by email.
So here is my issue. I want to transfer all my personal data from my HOME user account on my MacBook to a NEW user account on the SAME MacBook. The reason is that my Microsoft Office has a certain issue that is only solvable by starting up in a new user. So now I want to transfer all the personality, data, files, and all that from my home user to the new user on the same computer. After that, I want to delete the old Home user and make the new user the default home user account.
I'd like to uninstall SIMBL. The only plugin I've ever used is megazoomer, and it doesn't work for 64-bit applications, and I don't want to have to run them in 32-bit mode. I deleted the bundle from /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins, but aren't there any system-related files that need to be removed as well?
I have (had) an effective VPN connection established on my iMac to enable connection to my work computer. I recently reviewed my use of users, creating a separate administer account and changing my home account privileges from admin to 'standard'.
I am now unable to use the VPN connection from my home account. The connection shows in the Network pane but the "Connect" button is greyed out. If I unlock the Network pane using the administrator details the Connect button becomes operational. If I change to the administrator account I can use the connection fine.
How can I enable the use of the VPN connection from a standard user, having locked the network connections (for the sake of not having children interfere with the network settings)?

In Office 2008, you can move "Microsoft User Data" in "Documents" folder to "~/Library/Preferences/". In office 2011, this trick does not work. Whenever I move "Microsoft User Data" to "~/Library/Preferences/", it will be re-created in "Documents" again.
I know that when I delete a file the data is still recoverable from the hard drive until it is replaced by other data.
So I'm looking for a program that wipes any data (preferably with the Gutmann Wipe method) off of the rewritable parts of the hard drive. Is there such a program for the Mac?
I know this is a Mac forum, but i need a little help finding a program and I thought I'd get the best results here. I'm looking for a program that is similar to OSX's Time Machine to backup my parent's PC. It is an HP and runs Windows XP and I have a Western Digital 750 GB USB external drive. Really, the main thing I want to backup is documents and music files. is there a program similar to Time Machine for Windows XP? Something I can set up to backup new files every few days or so?
does anyone know of a program I can use to change .m4a files (what itunes rips cd's into) into .mp3? I'm trying out a different music playing program, but it doesn't support .m4a's, which is what most of my music is...
It really ***** me that Office 2004 places the Microsoft User Data folder in your Users/Accountname/Documents folder, and if you move it it just makes a new one Is there any reliable way to move the location to somewhere else and keep it that way? The Documents folder should be the realm of the user and the user alone, damn applications should keep their noses out!
+can You Guys Pls Explain Me... How Can I Transfer Eveyhing Exactly As Is It From Main Admin User To Another Admin User And Then Delete The Main Admin User...???
I've been working on a lot of projects lately, and I've noticed that my files are getting scattered all over my HDD. I'm just not thinking about organization right now, I'm thinking about getting the projects done as quickly as possible. I have found the Smart Folder interesting because of this recently. My question is how can I tag my Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Cinema 4D, After Effects, JPEGs, PNGs, Final Cut, and any other file type to show up in the Smart Folder for the same project? This way I'll just be able to open the smart folder and bang, everything for the project is in that folder. Less worrying about organization, more focusing on work!
Is there any program that will smartly back up my files? For example, I have all my music backed up to my external, but every month or so i have a couple new bands, albums in, that I don't really remember. So basically I want a program that will scan both folders, find what files are missing in the external and copy only those files over.
I have some .rar files that I need extracting but I don't have a clue as to what I can use. back in my PC days I use to use WinRAR but that was then and here I am now with my beloved Mac.
After ripping a DVD to a Mac on MacTheRipper, how would I then convert the VOB. files into MP4. files to make them compatible with iTunes so I can sync them onto my iPod.
I have a program that can find duplicate files. What my questions is if I get an email from someone and then I forward it to someone now I have a duplicate one in my inbox and another in my sent. If I delete the one in my sent then when I open it the attachment will not show. Is there a way for it to just store the file once and then create an alias pointing to the main file.
Another example: If I attach a photo from iPhoto to an email there again is another duplicate. I would much rather Mail send the photo and create an alias to the original photo in iPhoto thus creating no duplicates.
I hope that was not confusing.
I want a program that will find duplicates and then keep 1 and create alias's for the one's deleted.
I know this is not all cases of duplicate files but mainly my Mail has way to many duplicates.
I have a bunch of music on my computer that isn't properly named, like for instance:
Flo Rida - Right Round is named: right round flo rida.
This is cause I didn't care before and now I do. I also have a lot of videos on my computer, mostly personal, that I'd like to rename. I tried doing it one by one (hitting enter/return key, then changing the name) but it's taking to long.
Is there a program that I can do it? Sorry if this was discussed already, not quite sure what to search.
I've been burnt a few times downloading NZB files with an end result of an error ."article missing". Is there a program for mac users that can validate the the NZB file before downloading? I know windows has something like this (for example see below) http://rbytes.net/software/nzb-file-validator-review/
I have the "hide" box checked under my login items, but when I log in, the iTunes window will appear momentarily, then disappear, then reappear 1 second later. And once it reappears, it stays there. I have to manually hide it, which is no big deal, but defeats the purpose of the "hide" checkbox. I've added it/removed it and logged out/restarted several times, but it doesn't work. I'm running iTunes 9.0.1/ OS X 10.5.8.
Since I have switched from windows I have many duplicate files and even triplicate files! I was told (from a Mac Genius ) that leopard won't let you look at your picture files. So I want to rid the excess and save some hard drive space.
Basically, before I started using AppZapper for complete removal of the programs, I was just doing the drag'n'drop thing to the Trash when uninstalling programs.
Now I do not wish to keep my MBP polluted with unnecessary cache and other "remnants" of the previous programs that might not have been removed completely by the drag & drop method.
I've downloaded CleanApp, but from the looks of things it seems just like another AppZapper type of a program - for deleting current applications. However, I'd need something to look for possible remains of my previously installed programs.
How do I make "RAR expander" my default program for .rar files?Or is there another program you would recommend?
Background:I used "RAR expander" for a long time until I came across a file it was not compatible with. I then downloaded and installed "The Unarchiver" and it worked on the file "RAR expander" would not open.
After that "The Unarchiver" became the default program for .rar files. The problem is that "The Unarchiver" does not work well with password protected files. So for months now I have just manually opened "RAR expander" whenever I try to open a password protected file.
I want to keep both programs so I will be able to open any file, but as I rarely use "The Unarchiver" I would like to have that be the one I have to dig through sub-folders to use. That is, unless there is some excellent program I have not tried.
Some apps offer this preference, others don't. Is there a way I can say, have an app like Jaadu VNC Connect running, but without the pointless and distracting menu bar icon?
I have handbrake, but want something that will allow me to convert any of my video files to avi or mpeg-2, these seem to stream a bit better and want to convert all to mainly avi, but something with a bit more options would be better. Mac only no windows apps!
What's a good FTP program for OS X that is really fast and transfer like 10 files simultaneously? I tried that DUCK FTP and it honestly sucked... And panic or w/e. Also how do I stop .ds_store files from being made on server?
I am using the version 10.0.9 which might have been an automatic upgrade from my original version. The majority of my connections between library items has been lost. The items show up as missing files both in the library and when I run my project. How can I re-estabish these connections?
