Applications :: Chicken Of VNC - Connect To External IP
Mar 9, 2010
I want to connect 2 Macs Remotely (not on local network) using VNC. Both Mac's are running OSX 10.6. Home iMac is gunna be the one i want to control, so i have port forwarded my router to the ip of the Mac on the local network port 5900 to 5901. I use Chicken VNC on my MacBook at work and try to connect to the External IP of my home but nothing works.

I bought my first Mac (base model 27" iMac) and recently downloaded Chicken of the VNC. Now I have a puzzling issue. I am able to connect to a Suse Linux Enterprise Server - SP2 box off site but unable to connect to an OpenSuse 11.1 box on my internal network. Every time I try to connect to my internal Linux box I am able to see the login screen, but as soon as I try to type the login id, Chicken of the VNC hangs ( I get the spinning beach ball) and times out. I am puzzled why I have no problem connecting to an off site Linux box but cannot connect to an internal Linux box in the next room. I am able to connect to the Linux box in the next room from another physical Linux box in the same room as my Mac. I have ports 5801 to 5901 open on both the off site router and internal router. The firewall is open to let VNC in on both machines at both locations. The firewall is also currently turned off on my Mac. Next I installed an OpenSuse 11.1 virtual machine on my Mac with Fusion3. I opened a terminal in the Linux VM and I was able to use Tight VNC to connect to my box in the next room with no trouble. In another window on the Mac, I tried Chicken of the VNC, and once again the login screen displays, but I get the spinning beach ball when trying to type into the login screen. The Snow Leopard software compatibility site gives Chicken of the VNC the green OK symbol.

Have an older version of unstuffit from 2007. Just downloaded Arc Explorer GIS Reader in zipped format and there is something in the header that makes stuffit stop before unzipping.
So I went to CNET for a later unzipper to see if that is the problem, downloaded MacZip (most downloads with Stuffit 2010 next).
I got an .hqx file and nothing I have is interested in opening the .hqx file or launching or whatever is required.
Guess I'll try for Stuffit 2010 and see if that works better but any thoughts would be appreciated.
This is 500 MHz PowerPC G4 Mac with 2GB of RAM running system 10.4.11

We have a vacation home with a Mac Mini installed behind a standard cable modem / router.I occasionally VNC using the Lion Screen Sharing function (Connect to Server aka Command-K,I have the ports open on my router, everything worked well up until today.I was having some redraw issues with Screen Sharing over the internet, so I thought I'd try another VNC client to see if that worked any faster / better. In Sharing/ Screen Sharing I enabled "VNC viewers may control my screen with password" (usually i just login with the user account of the machine with the built in client.
Anyway, I connected this way with COTVNC once and didn't like it, so uninstalled it and went back to use my built in Lion VNC app.Now the VNC session is crawling slow (10-20 seconds to register a click) and I've tried everything to get it back from restarting to turning screen sharing off and on, unchecking VNC viewers may control my screen with password... everything. It seems that COTVNC has crippled my VNC connection and I have no idea why. A google search came up with nothing, so I thought I'd come here. The weird thing is... it's not physically taxing the cpu or anything, becuase if I connect via teamviewer that is also installed that is snappy. It's only when I use VNC.Sure I could continue to use teamviewer, but I liked the response time using the native client. Is there a way to reset the VNC service or something to clear the cobwebs of COTVNC away?

I have been setting up my MacMini for remote access (it functions as a headless server). To do so I have been using a simple password, '1'.Â
Now I want to change the password and can not do so in any way. I can still get in with Chicken if if switch of everything that has to do with sharing and remote access (I am doing this from within the same network, I sit a few meters away form the MM) In setting all this up I also used VineServer, but this is not running at present.Â

I just put together a new home recording studio for myself and I'm looking for a really fast (10,000 or 15,000 rpm) HD to connect to my Macbook Pro. All instruments and effects are VST and my setup consists of an M-Audio Axiom 61 midi controller and I'm running Ableton Live 8, along with Ministry of Rock, Omnisphere, Sampler, Kore, Kontakt, Reason and a pretty big REX2 library.
Omnisphere and Ministry of Rock are both system hogs, with both of them relying on the HD for performance. My Macbook Pro has a 7200 rpm drive in it, but I'm looking to offload everything except Ableton Live to the external HD. I was hoping some of you might have recommendations for specific brands that I can look for. My budget isn't very big, $500 max, for something in the 500 GB range or more. Firewire 800 or 400 preferably.

The monitor came with the VGA cable, but not a DVI-D cable. Should I get the DVI-D cable and adapter instead of a VGA adapter? Why do I ask, because the adapters both cost $34 each (I'm Canadian) but the catch is for DVI I would have to add an extra $20 for the cable and I'm not sure if it's worth it or not since I'm tight on money.
Should I worry myself over getting a DVI adapter AND the additional cost which is the DVI-DVI cable?Already answered:Just like Windows which makes it super easy, I tried searching but didn't find the right solution... Does anyone know how I can extend the my MBP's monitor to my external as I can do this on my PC -> External but can't get it to work from my Mac.Just to clarify, I want to do this via Leopard, not XP, Vista or 7.

What is the best way to hook up MBP to Syncmaster B2430? Everything looks great but the text. It's not sharp and there are random white dots that are on each letter. The pictures and videos are great. The color is nice and bright. But the text bugs me. I currently connect with an HDMI cable. Isn't DVI the same as HDMI, minus the audio?

I was experiencing intermittent problems reading a CF card through an external multicard reader. I also had connected a Seagate external hard drive. With some trial and error disconnecting, connecting and restarting, I could get the CF to read. Now I can't see any external drives - neither the CF or Seagate are recognized.

I recently purchased a SteelSeries GC3 controller mainly to use for playing emulator games (Dolphin Emulator) on my Macbook Pro (Retina). However, after hours of trying to get the controller to work I have had no success. When I plug it into my computer it lights up showing that the computer recognizes it but it won't recognize it on any program. Well actually, the first time I plugged it in it was able to recognize the buttons when programming their commands for the emulator but never worked in the actual game itself. Now it wont even recognize when programming.

I've just purchased a new sr macbook pro 2.4 ghz. when i plug the macbook pro to external speakers, the quality is really bad, no bass, just high tones. I allready checked the equalizer in Itunes and I turned the bass all the way up, but the sound was still horrible...
When I connect my macbook pro to a tv (via dvi to video adaptor) The sound of the external speakers goes even worse. The adapter causes like a weird tone in the bass...
does anyone know how to fix this?

I was about to work on this video project on my MBP 13" and realized something. When my Video camera is connected to my Firewire 800 port, I don't have anymore port to connect my External Hard Drive where I want to save my project.
I see that my old Lacie has two Firewire 800 port on its back, can I connect Lacie on my MBP and then connect video camera on Lacie's other Firewire 800 Port?

No mini display port of any kind. So is there an adapter for me? My old monitor can use either VGA or HDMI and I'm not really fussed which one I use. I was backing up my MacBook with Time Machine and using my new (correctly formatted) external hard drive. All was going well when my 2 yo knocked the disk leading to a "failure" by time machine (Latest Backup: Failed). Now the MacBook will not even recognize the hard drive. I have rebooted, tried all I can think of, but no acknowledgement of the drive. The drive itself makes noise and vibrates as if working, but nothing from the Mac.

I just made the mistake of buying a gaming headset that has the two audio jacks, input and output. Realizing that Macs dont have the right audio input port now. Before I take them back, is there any way I could get them to work? The sound is fine, but the mic doesn't work obviously. But I do have a pair of wireless Turle Beaches that I use for my Xbox 360, is there anyway I could take some of the connections from that to get this headset to work? Or do I just need to take it back and get a USB headset.
