Ive read many of these threads and am wondering if there is anything I can do other than erasing everything because I don't have an external hard drive. I used iDefrag but I could only do the "quick" defrag and it wouldn't let me do the compact one. Do I have to buy an external hard drive to be able to partition?
View 6 RepliesI have been having awesome experience using OS X and Xp at the same time! But lately when I try to run the games on VMware... its starting to lack in graphics and memory. So, I was thinking of installing bootcamp. My first question is will I have stuff that I have installed in VMware Xp in Xp installed on Bootcamp? Secondly, if bootcamp is partitioning the HD then is that mean when I want to reinstall the OS X and wipe the HD will I only have the part that had OS X? Sorry I am pretty new to Mac and I never was brave enough to install xp on Bootcamp xD.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an aluminum unibody macbook from October 2008. I'm looking to upgrade the 160 GB hard drive inside to a 500 GB one I'm considering from Newegg. Would it be possible to migrate/copy/clone the entire contents of my current hard drive to the 500 GB one? I also have a section of my current hard drive partitioned for Bootcamp. Would this affect my ability to transfer everything over?
If this is possible at all, how can I go about doing so? If there are steps laid out somewhere, I'd appreciate a referral. Sorry if my question is a little elementary, but I did a search on these forums and also google and nothing really came up
My PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?
As soon as I bought my Mac I created a partition for Windows on Boot Camp. I later realized that I didn't need it, but then it was too late, 30GB of my Hard Drive was already partitioned. Is there a way to revert the process and re-claim my 30GB to use with the Macintosh system?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried to use Bootcamp to install Windows XP Professional. When trying to partition through bootcamp I got this error:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Backup the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Volume. Restore your info to the disk and try using bootcamp assistant again."
I tried to create a journaled partition after using the disk utility to fix any problems which it found none. The problem was that the partitioning never stopped it went on for hours till I finally canceled it. I also have a problem with VMware Fusion which you can find here: [URL]
I have a win 7 installation on its own drive in my mac pro. I now need to move it to a new hard drive.
In mac I would use super duper or carbon copy cloner to just copy the lot onto another drive whilst making it bootable. How would I do this with the windows drive?
Can I put boot camp onto a portable/external HDD and change boot options to run the HDD on start up? I have a very new macbook (its my first mac), so don't want to start messing around with partitions etc., as I am very new to macs...
I'm also wondering if there is a Linux/Ubuntu emulator available for the mac? And if there is one, would it be possible to partition an external hardrive into three segments, one for Bootcamp, one for Linux, and one for time capsule?
Last time I did this I ended up reinstalling my whole computer because I took out the Cd under the installation. And it don't seems like that I partitioned it or what it's called. I have done it now but I did go back and I shut down BootCamp assistant and now I have 2 hard drives Macintosh Hd and BootCamp but what I was wondering about is that if I going to install will the install be made on the BootCamp hard drive automatically?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had windows in a bootcamp partition for a while, and today, i decided to erase the partition and make a new, bigger one. I erased it just fine, but I can't make another one, it just gives me this error: Verification failed: this disk could not be partitioned. Use disk utility to repair this disk. I went to disk utility and i clicked verify disk (repair disk was not highlighted) and it gave me another error: filesystem verify or repair failed. I also repaired disk permissions with no such luck.
View 17 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with creating disk partition via Bootcamp Assistant. when i try to run it i get an error message saying "some files could not be moved" and the process of creation is aborted. I have sufficient free space of 50GB, trying to create 32GB win XP partition. Some freeware utils confirmed that my th data writtne on my HDD are very fragemented (and so is the freespace). I'd like to create a compact data area (wich would result in creatin a compact free space area).
so far i've found 2 ways:
1) Backup my HDD, reinstal OS , crate a fresh partition and than copy the backuped fiels back - unfortunalty i don't have a backup drive
2) use iDefrag (a payed 3rd party utility) - unfortunalty this one has very limited usage on mounted disk, and so it has a little/no efect on my hard drive fom which i boot the system, and i don't have a second drive to boot from
I'm getting a new imac in a weeks time, and was wondering about bootcamp. When I wanted to dual-boot a PC and Linux, I had to partition the hard-drive and install the OSes before doing anything else. Do I need to do that for bootcamp and Windows 7? I only really need windows on bootcamp for a game that's coming out in 2011. Do I need to install it now or can I wait?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI made an attempt to use Winclone to move Win7 (NTFS, 64-bit) to a new hard drive. After the image was deployed I rebooted. On the new drive,Win7 BSODs - I can't even boot into command line mode as it summarily reboots. The original bootcamp partition boots perfectly, however. I know Winclone was discontinued - assuming other people have used it with Win7 and have not had problems, without having to use Win7's DVD to do a repair install or to - for the moment - delete the original bootcamp partition that I know works, are there any means to fix the boot sector or alleviate this problem? (I think the BCD wants to point to the wrong partition, despite it starting to boot on its own...)
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy 27" iMac that I purchased on Dec 8 2008 had a HD failure. I was running bootcamp and Win 7 and thought I had a virus but the Apple Store geek said the HD was kaput. This has to be a record for short lived HD's on a Mac. And no, I didn't have extended warranty. Anyone else have such a bad experience? My MBP is chugging along and I'm pretty certain I will NOT partition the HD on the Mac when I get it back tomorrow.

I was running out of room and wanting to try out Windows 7, so I deleted it and tried to create a larger one. So far, i have not been able to create a new partition. The error I'm currently getting reads "Verification failed. This disk could not be partitioned. Use Disk Utility to repair this disk." When I do that, I usually get that it needs repairing, I repair it, and then it happens again. I've done the repairing using the Leopard DVD or booting from another hard drive that's bootable. Another error I was getting said there is currently data there that cannot be moved. That errors told me to back up, wipe my hard drive, and do a reinstall. I really don't want to have to do that, and I really don't NEED Windows, but I did recently want to play some games and dug up my old games for Windows.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a new imac (love it!) and have installed vista on a 32Gb partition using Boot Camp. I was planning on saving files I create in vista on the external Hard drive. But I can't see it when I'm in Vista so can not save files to it. It is a terrabyte disk and is used by Time machine. Is there anyway I can save to it or should I add another external HD just for windows, I can see it when I go to system hard ware (it says seagate HD etc but there is no info on files sizes etc-there is a button which says populate but I dare not press it as I'm scared it will screw up my back ups) Another irritation is that when I reboot back to mac it throws out the internet and I have to reset the modem and router so it works again.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 13" white macbook, which I had partitioned with Bootcamp. When I decided to upgrade to a 500 GB drive I didn't want to reinstall everything, so after ordering and installing my new harddrive, I used super duper to clone my mac volume onto the new drive. [URL]. It worked like a charm for the mac volume, but did not copy my windows volume. No problem, I figure, I will just run the boot camp assistant again, b/c I didn't have that much on that volume anyway. However when I booted up in my new 500 gb mac drive, the Boot Camp Assistant would not work and generated an error message stating. "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
Only problem is, my drive was already formatted as an extended journaled volume. I erased it and reformatted and recloned from super duper just to double check, but still got the same error message. Then I tried to start from scratch, and erased the drive again and tried to install an operating system from the dvd. I got another error message saying that the hard drive could not be partitioned and that I needed to use disk utility to reformat the disk as a GUID partition. However I couldn't figure out how to do that, and couldn't find anything on the disk utility that said GUID. it took a call to mac support (thanks mark!) to figure it out. Thought I would post it here in case anyone else has the same problem. It turned out that the hard drive I'd ordered was somehow not set up the way as my old one.
The solution was:
1. boot from the mac os DVD
2. go into disk utility, select the new hard drive, and choose the partition tab
3. change the number of partitions from "current" to "1"
4. then the 'options' button becomes available, and you can go in and select to format as a GUID drive.
from that point on, I was able to proceed with installing Mac OS x, install all the software updates, and run the boot camp partition.
Once I had the hard drive partitioned properly I used Super Duper to clone my mac volume onto the new drive, and then used Winclone to clone the windows drive. for some reason the main site for winclone is down right now - two canoes - but I got a working copy here: [URL] none of the help info on two canoes was available yesterday or today either so I had a little trouble figuring out how to use it. (though others have said it's super easy...). I wasn't sure where to save the disk image, on a mac or windows volume and on my old or new drive. The way I ended up doing it (that worked) was:
1. open winclone, and in the 'image' tab, create an image and save it on the mac volume of the new hard drive. (I couldn't save it on the old drive b/c there wasn't enough room)
2. then, still in winclone, go to the 'restore' screen and restore from the mac volume of the internal hard drive to the windows volume.

Something happened to my mac when I was traveling, be it a latent hardware flaw, damage, or some other random act, and my mac OSX partition just, well, died. Unbootable, disk utility spends over a day trying to fix the boot record. The Bootcamp windows partition is fritzy, but it at least mounts and periodically can be booted from. I bought an external usb hard drive, loaded SL onto that, and have my mac back up and running again, but no data to speak of. So based on numerous recommendations, I paid good money to purchase Disk Warrior 4. Nothing, just told me the Macintosh HD partition on the hard drive was damaged, but that bootcamp could still be read.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 13 inch Aluminum Late 2008 MacBook. Processor 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53). Currently I have a 160 GB SATA disk as my hard drive a d 4 GB of memory. (Is it time to upgrade or what?) I recently bought a Western Digital 1 TB internal hard drive to replace my exisiting internal hard drive. I spent a lot of time last night trying to first- connect this new hard drive to my computer so that I can then clone the existing hard drive and then hoping that I would get that done so I could install the new hard drive. No such luck.
My current hard drive is partitioned as follows:
Name: Macintosh HD
Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
Size: 132.5 GB
Name: BOOTCAMP
Format: Windows NT File System (NTFS)
Size: 26.69 GB
When I was partitioning the new drive I did so as follows:

Size: 973.51 GB

Format: MS-DOS (FAT) --- This was the only option that I was given that I thought would work. I did not have the option of "Windows NT File System (NTFS) to choose from. Question # 1: is that going to be a problem? I only run 1 program on Windows and that is the only reason I have BOOTCAMP on there at all. However, I do HAVE to have that program. Like I said it didn't give me the option to choose Windows so I didn't know where to go with this. Any help with that would be awesome.
Size: 26.34 GB (I just used the same size that was current, or close to it.) I connected the Western Digital 1 TB through an external device, partitioned it as stated above, and then used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the drives. The first one went through fine. (It took 2 hours and I went to bed before it finished.) This morning I woke to see that it had gone through well. I then started the process with the BOOTCAMP drives. However, before I started it gave me errors stating that I wouldn't be able to run Windows off of the Cloned BOOTCAMP drive. Question #2: Is it because of the Format type I chose when partitioning?

I went to the applestore and, after purchasing one to one, was turned down for a data transfer from my old macbook pro to my new macbook pro. The "genius" recommended that I buy an external hard drive from newegg and get some screwdrivers and do it myself. So I did, except (I think) he told me to get the wrong kind of external hard drive enclosure and now I'm just really upset because I went through the process and got the hard drive out of the old macbook pro perfectly. What do I need to (re)buy to make this data transfer work?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased this Portable (iomega) 500GB hard drive. I just realized it only works on my Mac's USB ports, but not with my USB Hub. Does it exceed the power limit of the USB Hub? I don't see how it is possible, because I currently have nothing else plugged into it, and it uses a power adapter.
It worked with my old Hard Drive, which is big and uses a power adapter. Now it doesn't seem to work. Also I tried on just a USB adapter that makes the cable longer, still doesn't work. Only the MBP ports work! However, the hub works for things such as phone charger, and speakers right now.
I took 2 storage HDs out of my Mac Pro and stuck them in this external HD which I just bought.when I plug it in to my Macbook Pro and turn it on, nothing happens. It all lights up and the harddrives churn for a little bit, but nothing shows up on the desktop or in Disk Utility. What am I doing wrong? I have tried FW400, FW800, and USB2.0. I'm new to external enclosures, so tell me if there is some song and dance routine I need to perform to get it to show up.
View 1 Replies View RelatedNew 13" MBP, 250 MB stock dirve, set it up with software and configured everything, about 200 MB still free. Before I swap it out for a 500 GB and add my media files I thought I'd create an image of it using the Hard Disk tool.
- Logged into home NAS drive on the network using Connect To Server, opened Mac Hard Disk Utility, couldn't create image because the Hard Drive was in use.
- Restarted using OS DVD instead of HD, but now there is no Connect To Server pull-down option to be able to log into NAS drive on network. I can see the NAS through AFP when I go to Save As, but that's only as a guest, Read Only.
- I plugged in my 32 GB flash drive, tried to save image there, got an error message that it can't create because file is too large.
- Unplugged flash drive, plugged in 320 GB external USB drive, couldn't write to it because it was still NTFS from using it with my windows machine.
- Used the HD utility to erase the drive as FAT so it will work on both. Was able to create a folder on the drive so I know it's now writable.
Tried to create the image, it looked like it was working for a while, woke up this morning and checked, it says it can't create the image because the file is too large.
It can't fit 40 GB of data onto an empty 320 GB drive? Did Apple hire Windows programmers to create this utility?
I just upgraded to snow leopard and when I try to plug in my external hard drive I get a prompt saying "the disk inserted was not readable by this computer." It was working before when I was running leopard.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy MacBook Pro is fairly new, but I have a 500g Western Digital external hard drive that was originally hooked up to my previous computer, a PC. When I plugged in my external, I was able to move files from it to my Mac. However, I was unable to delete files off of the external while it was plugged into my Mac and I could not add files, either.
When I booted up my old PC and plugged the external into it, it worked fine. So I can only assume that since I first used it on my PC, I'm having trouble using it on my Mac. A friend of mine told me something about how I'd have to reformat my computer and start over. PLEASE tell me this is not the case. Does anybody know a way to fix this that lets me keep my Mac as is and not have to delete anything?
