I have a multitude of hard drives that I store various media on. I have tried to find a program that would sync a folder on a NES drive and a USB drive on my extreme. The program would be a replacement for backup of the drive. I have found tons of windows freeware/shareware versions, but have not found an Mac option.
View 3 RepliesI'm looking for an app that will allow me to specify which folders I want to copy to my external drive, updating existing files within it and copying new ones.
I don't want to backup settings, my whole harddrive nor make a bootable backup. Just something to backup what I want to backup and where.
Not sure if Time Machine can do that, but it wants me to reformat my external before I can even find out..and considering how much is on there, I really don't want to have to remove that all elsewhere while doing so. [Don't think I could anyway, none of my internal drives have that much space.]
So, does anyone know of a relatively painless backup app that could do simply what I want? Doesn't sound all that complicated in comparison to some of the more convoluted backup apps I keep finding.
After installing Lion, I can no longer move program icons from my applications folder to a sub folder. When I do, it makes a copy and leave the original in the applications folder. When I then try to delete the icon in the applications folder it tells me it's required by the OS and won't let me delete. I'm forced to keep certan applications such as Time Machine and Stickies in the application folder.

I know Time Machine will make snapshots for system backup. But let's say I have all my media(movies, TV shows, etc..) on a backup drive and I want to periodically sync it to a 2nd external drive. SecondCopy for Windows does exactly that. It will allow you to select whether you want to sync the whole drive, or part of it and will only copy over the newest folders/files.

it is taking an eternity... really.
time machine took 36 hours and only did 1TB. of data (no program or other files)
Carbon Copy Cloner so far has taken over 25 hours and not even done 900 GB yet... (though it is making a bootable copy of everything even system and apps.)
Is there any program that will smartly back up my files? For example, I have all my music backed up to my external, but every month or so i have a couple new bands, albums in, that I don't really remember. So basically I want a program that will scan both folders, find what files are missing in the external and copy only those files over.

What (free) program would allow me to backup my user name without having to manually drag everything over? Migration Assistant won't work as there will be a few days where I have no computer. My laptop got stolen a few weeks ago, i've replaced it with a new MBP, and fortunatley I done a full backup at xmas time, so my computer is just like it was on the 23rd of December 2011. However, my iphone has a ton of new photos, music and playlists on it since that date.
Now I want to keep all these tracks, playlists and photos, but i don't no how to go about it.
If i plug it in to the MBP now, won't itunes back sync and delete all the new stuff?
How do i go about keeping the recent stuff on my iphone?
Perhaps its just me being tired, as it seems there should be simple solutions to both of these problems, but I can't find them.
1) I got a new HD, and had it connected to my MacBook and MacBook Air one at a time to do an initial Time Machine backup. However, now I've connected it to my Time Capsule, and pointed them to the same partitions that they backed up to earlier - and they can't see the older backups. Is it possible to get them to see it and only start an incremental backup?
2) I'm also trying to mirror my iTunes library on the new hard drive, but all the methods I've tried so far (ie a couple of Automator actions and various apps) have either failed, or haven't worked properly (one has added several thousand '..DS_Store' files to the folder which aren't there even when I view hidden files!

Trying to backup to Passport Time machine. Has worked fine until a few days ago.
So my mom has her iMac & a white Macbook. She's interested in syncing just her documents folder over the network whenever both machines are on and on the WiFi in the house. I know there's gotta be a program that'll do this easily for her. I can get it it all setup for her via remote desktop, I just need to know what to use.
View 9 Replies View RelatedApple's new OSX Snow Leopard includes native Exchange email sync using Exchange Web Services but it seems that this does not sync emails in the same way outlook does: emails on Mail.app only update when you open a specific folder on your exchange mailbox (like IMAP does) and not like Outlook on windows where folders are updated in the background. does anyone know about this behavior and if it can be changed on Mail to work in the background? I've only tried this on a developer beta (latest version) of SL briefly and noticed this behavior but would like to get feedback from those that may have upgraded.

This is how I use Acronis TruImage on my Windows systems. For whatever reason, I don't trust backups made while the operating system is running. Maybe this comes from my old days trying to backup servers with ArcServe and having to buy a special addon to help you backup open files. I think it's just cleaner if I run the backup from a "dos" environment. I think my Acronis TruImage disc boots PC-DOS and runs only the TruImage software.
My MPB is having issues (it doesn't actually go to sleep, so when i come to use it, the battery is totally drained) and i want to backup everything before I take it into AppleCare, but I'm worried about some of my programs...
for example: I have Senuti on my computer (0.50.01). When I downloaded it, it was a free program. Now, the version that is out cost around $18 (i think). The old version I am using works fine for me, and I downloaded it free and legally--I don't want the new version.
I'm trying to back up my new iMac to an older time capsule. But it just won't do it. The error reads: "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder".

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have downloaded two programs "Skype" and printer driver software and no matter how many times I click and drag to the applications folder (as my instructions tell me to do) the programs remain on the top right hand of my desktop. I have tried using "Help" and even surfed some of the Apple tutorials...by all counts I have found I am doing it correctly but its not working.

As the title says, I'm looking for a program to organize and clean up my hard drive. I have an iMac now, but I had a iBook before that and the way I backed up my iBook was by dragging my Volumes folder into an external hard drive. I have folders inside of folder for days. I have my ibook backed up several times that way.
What I would love is a program that did the following
1.) Delete duplicates of everything.
2.) Put all file types into a single file extension folder (put all .doc in a folder called DOCs and all pdfs in a PDF folder, etc.etc.).
I had downloaded some music from the net and placed it under my home folder, music, iTunes, iTunes Music, Music. Under iTunes Music is all of my music, including the new music I filed there. But when I open the iTunes Program, the new music is not in my iTunes Library there. how I can get my new purchase visible in my iTunes Library in my iTunes Program? All of the other music in the file is visible.

I have all the correct server settings etc and succesfully imported my mailboxes. The problem is that when I send an email it isn't from the right email address?? Is this a Mail problem or smth to do with my settings? I'm with Virgin media and have a separate set of email address through my website for my business so my email address are through freeola that I am using through Thunderbird.I'm sorry if this all sounds very stupid but I am pulling my hair out trying to figure out where I have gone wrong!
What's the best application to selectively back up folders? Both Super Duper and Carbon Copy Cloner erase the continents of the external hard drive before backup, so those won't work for me. I'm not really looking to make a bootable clone of my hard drive anyway. I'd just like to back up some folders and avoid the hassle of drag-and-drop. Shareware is fine if it's reasonably priced.
