OS X :: Stuck At The Starting Login Window - Normal Boot Halts
Apr 15, 2005
I installed all the Software Updates available, including the iSight and Airport updates (mainly to get rid of them, and I may add these later to my G5 iMac), and now when I reboot, I get no further than the "Starting Windows Login" part...
I have to assume its something to do with adding the updates as it was all working fine before then...
I can start in Safe Mode fine, and I get in OK, but normal boot halts (no errors, mouse works, just goes not go any further) at the "Starting Login Window"
Any thoughts on how to either A) Reverse the Updates B) Get around this?

When I turn on lap top (iBook G4 Mac OS x 10.3) i get the following message "Login Window Starting" I followed Apple support guidance - specifically safe start and performing the fsck then reboot process and neither works for me. I don't have the disks any more so I cant use them for reloading the software. I want to sell the laptop so i just want to format the HD. Is it possible to format from command lines?

I am absolutely new to Mac OS, however I am a FreeBSD sysadmin. A friend of mine send me her iBook G4 which won?t boot in normal mode (stuck in "Starting Mac OS X..."). I asked her what happened and the answer was:I did iTunes and MAC OS update and when the update finished, the Mac restarted and problem started.I booted in single mode (Command-key + S) and when I got the prompt, I did "sh /etc/rc". At this stage, the output of "uname -a" is:

My computer hangs on startup. It's a PowerBook 12 G4 with 10.3.9.
First, the screen flashes black, then blue, then I get the normal startup progress bar. At the end, though, it hangs. If the ethernet cord is in, it hangs at "Waiting for network services" or something like that. If the ethernet cord is out, it hangs at "Login window starting".
The bigger problem is that my system install CDs are in the U.S., and I'm in China for the next six weeks.

recently a friend of mine offered to update my 2009 MacBook to Mac osx Lion. when I received the computer back from him, it required a rather large update that has put my MacBook in a terrible state.
upon rebooting from the update, it froze at the grey Apple loading screen, and of course I thought nothing of it and gave it a little restart. Since then I cannot get it past the grey screen or the login window. it seems as though I cannot type in my password or click 'sleep' or any option the window gives me. I've been working on this issue all day, and I've tried countless things from the apple support community, with no avail.
I've tried clearing the cache, I've tried safe mode, I've tried the command+option+control+enter trick on the login page, I'm even trying to boot from the install disc my friend gave me...and it's just refusing to move past the grey screen.

On Leopard, Remote Login won't start. It's stuck on "Starting remote login...". If I reboot, it says Remote Login is off, and I go through the same process.
Is there any way I can fix this or totall reset SSH? I tried deleting all of the SSH files in /etc and ~/.ssh.

My Mom recently purchased an ibook g3 (700mhz 256mb of ram) running Mac os x 10.4.11 off ebay as a Christmas present for my sister and I checked for updates the first chance I got. It showed two updates, quicktime 7.6.4 and some security update labelled 2009-005. While these updates were downloading/installing I noticed iTunes was version 8 and so I told it to install 9.02 but nothing seemed to happen, so I decided I would just do that when the other updates were done. Well the updates finished installing and it said I needed to reboot. So I did and when it got to the "starting mac os x" screen it stopped once the blue bar filled. After about 10 minutes of waiting I held down the power button so I could reboot. When I rebooted the same thing happened again. I do not have the install disk as it did not come with the computer.

Mail keeps starting up at login. In the preferences>accounts and login items it's not listed, so there's nothing to remove there. Please, how do I stop from mail opening at startup, I don't want to use it, as I do everything via webmail.

So my 13" MBP arrived today and unfortunately my first mac experience isn't a pleasant one. The computer wont start. I am hoping I am doing something wrong but I have gone through the step by step troubleshooting and my computer just sits there with a blank black screen. It shows that the charge is full and when I click the power button the little white light glows in front, however, no sound nor no startup happens on the screen.

I have an early 2011 15'' Macbook Pro.
I recently purchased a 250GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD and used Migration Assistant to transfer my HDD data to it. After installing
the SSD into my computer, I booted up and have been stuck on the following screen for about a couple of hours:
I'm not sure what to do at this point. I'm afraid that if I hold the power button down for a shut down and restart, this process will start all over.

has all my art course work on. When pressing the power button there is no start up, screen stays black. There is a noise from the Disc Drive, when you put your ear close you can hear the Disc spinning, occasionally it starts to make a loader noise like its trying to spin to full speed maybe, but stops before it can. Green light can be seen from bottom, tried unplugging and waiting, tried pressing the cmd R-P keys down at start up. Also tried as suggested on the apple website to use a paper clip to manually eject the disc.

I am currently using osx lion, I have a behaviour to shut down my computer and let the application that currently running closed by itself during shut down (including massive finder windows). But when I turn on my computer again, those windows reappears. While it might be a nice feature, its really bothering for me. Is it possible to tell osx lion NOT to open the last windows opened during shut down? I am also curious if its possible to do this on safari. I have limited bandwidth, and opening the last windows is annoying.

The weirdest thing has happened to my MacBook. It was running a little slow today so I restarted it thinking it would help clear out the memory and whatnot. When I restarted it, everything seemed normal. It makes the classic "mac soud" and shows the apple with the circular loading wheel. It then goes to the login screen, just as it normally does. However, once it goes to the login screen, the spinning beachball comes up and it freezes temporarily. This is when it starts to get bad. The screen then goes black and comes up with white letters saying: Darwin/BSD (my name's Computer.) (console) login: sometimes, I have time to type in my username and password, sometimes not. Either way, the following comes up: disk0s2: 0xe0030005 (UNDEFINED)
it then goes back to the login screen, which completly freezes every time. I am completly frustrated and terrified that I will not be able to access my data, which includes over 2 years of music, pictures etc. that have not been backed up. Does anyone know what is going on with my MacBook?

I have been having problems when I will shutdown into BootCamp or just normal shutdown and then when I reboot and login I have lost all of my login items. It is very annoying as I have my system setup how I like it and I have to remember everything it was set to. This happens very often.

Recording a track this morning - 1,2,3,4,5, all going well, overdubbing acoustic rhythm, lead, vocal, and so forth-
Recording track 6, my song just comes to a screeching halt at 00:48.
Press PLAY and it just plays a split second right at 00:48.
"Loop" feature clicked on, off. Same same. Song starts at beginning, everything ok, then at 00:48, track stops. Press "play" and hear a split second of 00:48 music.
Deleted track I was working on, created new track, song halts at 00:48.
Saved project, quit GB, relaunched, song stops at 00:48.
Plenty of memory, I back up every day.

i had firefox open and i was typing on another site. i opened the special characters window because i needed a unique symbol. when i tried closing that window, it froze. i proceeded to quit firefox so it would go away. it stayed on my screen though, even with firefox closed. next i thought my computer was just being buggy. so, i completely shut it down for a while and logged back on. the window is still there and won't go away.
here's a screenshot i took so you can visually see what's going on here: [URL}
after the previous attempts didn't work i've tried completely removing firefox from my computer and redownloading it, which didn't work, and restoring my system, which also didn't work.

I have a macbook i got in July of '08 and in the past week it sometimes gets stuck on the blue screen before it goes to the login page. Not everytime though so it's not a big deal but I have to restart it by the button and that makes me uncomfortable and it's a bit annoying. I know I can prevent it from going to the login screen but I don't want to because I don't like leaving my laptop where someone can easily mess with it so I set a password. Any clues on why it is doing this and do I need to worry about it getting worse or something bad causing it?

I have a Mac Mini running 10.7.3 that I made the mistake of unchecking the show input menu in login window. Now I can't log in at all. I have tried to delete the "com.apple.loginitems.plist" using screen sharing, Lion in all its wisdom tells me I don't have permission.
I then tried to create a start up disk on one of my 2TB disks, somehow the system wasn't installed, just all the included apps. I then tried reinstalling lion on the Mac Mini, after over an hour it restarted with the same blank screen. Now when I go to the App Store Lion is no longer available to me.

SO I tried to partition the disk - 50% for Windows & 50% for Mac Use. On trying to install the Windows 7 Premuim DVD software, it comes up with a message that the correct drivers cannot be found. My main issue is that it wont release/eject the DVD anymore. I inserted but it wont eject at all.
When I shut down or cancel the installation then it does shut down but when startup reoccurs I am unable to eject & it then goes straight into the windows 7 software trying to install it again - only for it to repeat the same cycle where it cant find the drivers & if I cancel installation it just shuts off without releasing the disc. Its my 1st mac so I am a novice except for all the other gear like the ipad, ipod etc

"When I login, my laptop flashes my desktop background and immediately takes me back to the login screen" Worked late into the night doing things with my laptop it worked fineThis morning when I got into the office I plugged my laptop into my second screen and noticed I only had a desktop on the 2nd screen the laptops screen was stuck on dashboard. (I could create new desktops, etc. on my 2nd screen just fine)I unplugged my secondary monitor and saw my desktop come up on my primary screen.Suddenly another flash and I was logged outNow when I enter the correct password it looks like it is starting to log in, my grey lock screen becomes my factory blue desktopthen it flashes back to the login screenIf I enter the wrong password the input box does the typical left right shake.
5,6,7 are repeatable, sadly 1 et al are not.

My parents share a Mac Mini. Often when I'm at their house, I notice that it's been left at the login screen. Presumably one person logged out thinking they were leaving the computer available for the other and then never put it to sleep at the login screen. The issue is that Energy Saver prefs don't seem to apply when there is no user logged in. The computer just sits there with the login window display indefinitely. It never goes to sleep or turns the display off.
Is there any way to have some sort of daemon run only while no one is logged in that would either shut down the computer or put it to sleep after a specified number of minutes of being idle at the login screen? While the Mac Mini is a very energy efficient computer, it still makes no sense for it to be on for dozens of hours each week unnecessarily.

I would love it if my mac could switch to the login window upon sleep (or wakeup)... given the usage patterns of my laptop in my household, where someone uses the laptop, closes it, and someone else picks it up to use it, it would be the most streamlined way of switching between accounts...
The closest solution, which isn't quite right, is to require password for the last user account to be used... not exactly the best solution...
