OS X :: Ok To Leave The Drive Permanently Plugged Into My IMac?

May 3, 2009

Might be a silly question:

I have an 8GB USB pen drive, formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journalled). I use it for backing up text documents (8GB goes a long way).

Is it ok to leave the drive permanently plugged into my iMac? I don't know what the life of these devices is supposed to be, so am I risking damage/failure by leaving it in?

My computer is pretty much awake 24/7.

IMac :: How To Turn Off IMac Screen But Leave Secondary Screen On?

Dec 21, 2009

I'm sure this should be simple but I can't figure it out.

I have my iMac connected to my TV and am using Plex to watch stuff on the TV.

What I'd like to do is turn my imac screen off without turning off the second monitor output (i.e. tv) as the imac screen is a bit bright/distracting (even on lowest brightness) when watching in the dark.

MacBook Air :: How To Switch From IMac

Mar 21, 2008

I currently use an iMac (20" late 2006 model) as my main computer, but for my next I am seriously considering a MacBook Air. I bought my iMac with the intention of using all of it's power (I got the 2.33Ghz with 256mb X1600), but the only time I really tap into the processor is when I encode video, which I do rarely anymore, and when I play games, which I never do anymore since I have a PS3 for that. Now, all I really do is websurf, listen to music, use Garageband, and other basic stuff.

IMac :: How Can I Make The Switch?

Mar 25, 2010

I?m a long time lurker and this is my first time posting. I?ve been a PC guy all my life and the only apple product I own is the iphone (which I now can?t live without). My current PC is a $300 Acer laptop from 4 years ago (you can imagine how powerful it is :-P ). I?ve decided it?s time to upgrade and now is the perfect time to finally make the switch over to the Mac. I?m just really unsure about what route I should go with given how I will use the machine and I?m humbly coming before you guys for your opinions! I?m under a budget but I?m willing to pay to meet my computing needs, short of springing for a power mac.

OS X :: Windows 7 PC And 27" IMac KVM Switch?

Oct 31, 2009

While planning my 27" iMac purchase this winter, I am in need of a KVM switch. I ONLY need this for keyboard and mouse, I can deal with two displays.

Will any KVM switch these days take the wired apple keyboard and a wired windows mouse and allow it to run on both machines?

I am thinking about this one: [URL]

So just to be clear, I want to use the wired apple keyboard (with numpad) and a wired Microsoft mouse for both. Will they run fine on both systems?

I just got an iMac running 10.6.1 And I still have a Mac Mini running 10.4.11, which allows me to access several apps running under Classic. I'd like to still access them on the glossy new monitor, with the wireless Magic Mouse. Since the iMac has no monitor input port, how do I hook up a KVM switch? Which brand do you recommend?

Sometimes restarting is not enough: you need to power off your Mac, wait for a little, and power it on again. It could be a script which act like the "schedule" program in system preferences: it would switch off the Mac immediately, the add 1 minute to the current time and switch it on again.

IMac :: Tried To Re Switch On - Grey Screen Came Up, Apple Logo?

Aug 16, 2010

Hoping someone can help - my imac (approx 15-18 months old , intel) won't start.

Last night on shutting down DPP (canon Digital image software) was hanging and system asked me if I wanted to force quit it...sadly I had switched off my bluetooth mouse and , as usually once mouse turned off switching it back on it never re connects - why did I buy the bletooth mouse and keyboard ?, so I could not confirm yes force quit - is there no way of selecting with keyboard like there is in windows ?

So I switched off at power switch. Tried to re switch on - grey screen came up, apple logo, the little timer circle but after a while timer circle stopped and nothing further happened.

have tried several more times and now don't even get timer.

OS X :: How To Leave Mail In Server

Sep 23, 2010

I'm leaving town and like to retrieve email from web server in those oversea internet cafe while still wish to leave incoming mail in my inbox at the home computer. Here's the confusion using Mail.

In Outlook Express, its very clear. We check the box "leave mail in the server". If we don't check it, nothing will happen.

But in Mail. it seems the reverse.

A) If we don't check the 3rd box, does it means forever its in the server?

B) Now if we check the 3rd box, we prompt the server to remove mail which in this case after one month and I'd assume the mail will be auto removed after one mth. Then what is the use of the right box (remove now).

I have done some experiment and it seems confusing. What I wanted was to able to retrieve mail from web server whilst in oversea while still maintaining all incoming mail for by home computer until my next order.

OS X :: How To Leave A Worksheet In Front Of Any Window

Apr 8, 2009

I would like to be able to have Stockcharts or other charting program open and go through a list of ticker symbols.

I have a "hotlist" I check regularly in a little textedit window which just takes up the corner of the screen. Trouble is when I enter a ticker into stockcharts, the textedit window gets knocked to the back and i have to use expose to show all windows then pick textedit again to look at my next ticker. It's just a slightly annoying timewaste.

Is there an elegant way to leave a list right at the front of everything no matter if I click on another window?
