Earlier I noticed a faint noise coming from the top left of the iMac, a little 'hiss' like, but otherwise hard to describe. I presume it's the HD, but I'm not quite sure as diagrams show the HD being more-a-less in the middle. Perhaps the room has got quieter, but then again the concern is that the iMac has got louder.

I have had my new pro since christmas, and it has been incredible. however i noticed from day one that periodically i get this buzzing noise coming from the left speaker - closest to the screen. is it the hard drive? what is it... and is it normal? sometimes if i tap the speaker area (next to the magsafe) it goes away.. and other times its pretty loud. i do NOT have applecare. should I purchase that as well.

I just wanted to get the whole story on the table and clarified.I've had one of the new Aluminum 13" MacBooks (2.0GHz C2D) since Christmas Eve. A few weeks ago, it accidentally fell off my desk at work (not a far drop , but far enough for my heart to stop for a few minutes) when I got tripped up in the power cord under the desk.
For all intents and purposes, the MacBok seemed to work fine. I had one of our IT staff, who happened to be a trained Apple repair tech, take a look at it; the only real damage was that the display hinge had been knocked a little out of alignment. Just ot be on the safe side, I took the machine to the Apple Store, where they told me not to worry about attempting to get the hinge fixed (because I'd be paying a lot of money for such minor work), and the Genius sold me a hardcover plastic Speck case for the MacBook.
While the Speck case certainly looked nice and madethe already sturdy laptop feel sturdier and "protected", I was a little concerned about the amount of heat the machine was giving off within the case. On Sunday, I unplugged the machine from the MagSafe charger for a few hours and left it closed in sleep mode. When I woke it back up, the fan on the left continually gave off some sort of high-pitched whine whenever the computer was in idle mode.
I Googled, searching this site and others, and read about the "CPU whine" in the previous generation MacBooks and MacBook Pros. I also saw where a few people with new Aluminum MacBooks were having this same issue or something similar:

It seems to only make the noise when the computer is running off of the battery - plugging in the MagSafe charger makes the noise quiet 85% of the time (I've found that plugging, unplugging, and replugging will not stop the whine from occurring).
I tried installing QuietMBP as was recommended in some posts, but the only setting that will stop the computer from whining is the "highest" setting (that is, allowing the processor 0 seconds of idle time), which causes QuietMBP to eat up 30% of my processor usage in Activity Monitor and to start the fans going (and, presumably, to significantly lower my battery life).
I don't know whether all of this was the result of the MacBook falling, from it overheating in the case, or something that "just happened". I set up an appointment with the Genius bar for today at 4 PM, but Idiscovered another odd occurance when I set up a new account for the Apple Store (rather than give them my password)
The noise never happened under the new account. Never. I left the machine idle until any and all initial processes were done. No noise. I checked Activity Monitor for stray processes. None. And no noise.
Now I'm bewildered. Could something have gone wrong somewhere in my account, leading to a corruption of a power management utility or process? I'm not canceling my appointment, but I am going to try a few things before I leave. I've already repaired disk permissions, and I'm about ot reinstall the 10.5.6 OS X combo update. Should I try to reset the PRAM too? What other options should I be looking at?
Or should I just wait, and let the Genius Bar folks look into it? As a note, I'm aware I may have to pay for any repairs because they may or may not blame them on the MacBook having dropped (despite two to three weeks passing between the fall and this issue arising), and I'm okay with paying for reapirs (though I will try my best to argue my case, of course).
I've read in several posts in this website's forum that there's a CPU noise problem with the MBPs, i even got to this site: o-noise-update...The thing is, that my computer is experimenting completely different symptoms, and that's quite annoying. I feel I'm alone in this The thing started like this, I sent my 13" Mid 2009's 2GHZ MBP to AppleCare to be repaired after the audio jack stopped working, they told me the audio card was to be replaced, and they did fix that problem, little did I not notice in the Apple Store (due to the store's natural noisy environment) that after this repair they gave me the computer back with the infamous hissing sound.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI purchased a MacBook 2010 from bestbuy almost two weeks ago, I have only really internet surfed and added some songs from my ipod using senuti. Yesterday I started noticing this little noise sort of a sounds like a bug like a scratchy hiss (or something spinning kind of like the noise my ipod classic makes every now n then) its very quick but it happens every few seconds. Now mind you it is very faint cant hear it if there's noise around me but if its silent I can hear it. I wanted to know am if its something I should be concerned with or was this small noise there from the beginning and i just started paying attention.

I just picked up a new MBP and loving it so far. Not sure if anyone else experiances this so I thought I would ask. When I have walked away from my Mac for a few minutes the screen dims down and has a faint beeping noise. When I touch a key or trackpad it is restored to full colour and the noise stops. Any ideas what or why this is?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 13" MacBook Pro from Mid-2009 and just today I've noticed a real faint clicking noise coming from the fan. It almost sounds like that noise a bike makes when you put a baseball card against its wheel. It's not very loud, but when I'm working in a silent room, it's been pretty annoying. I opened the back and blew all the dust out and all that, but the problem seems to only have got worse since then. The fan is still spinning at its usual 2000rpm.

While using it over the last little while, I would notice a noise that sounded like a harddrive spinning or possibly some sort of a fan noise. The best way to describe it would probably be as digital noise. It's not incredibly loud, but it's a decent volume, and can get quite annoying. It has a little bit of a squeak to it.
Over the last little while, it's become more constant. When the computer is in use, it'll usually occur quite often. It's quite annoying and obtrusive when I'm watching videos and I'd like to know what it could be.I think our computer is still under warranty, so I'm hoping to find out if it is something wrong, so I can get it replaced.
I've also been wondering if it's a fan, or a regular noise. However, it's so constant that I'm starting to wonder. The other night, I was watching a video and it seemed like it was coming on every 30 seconds for a long span of time. We don't run any memory heavy programs on this computer. If anything, we're just using Firefox, iTunes and/or Messenger. Sometimes Office. There's little to nothing stored on this computer, as it's brand new, so most of its memory is free.
Sometimes I lift and carefully move my 17-inch MBP a short distance to another flat surface without putting it to sleep mode, it starts making really loud mechanical noise when I put it down, so loud that people in the same room can hear the noise and I can feel vibrations too! What causes this? Where does this noise come from? Is my MBP defective?
View 3 Replies View RelatedHas anyone else had problems with an old G3 Pismo making an annoying squealing noise when plugged into a charger? There's a lot of noises mentioned in mac/apple forums but none of them relate to this one. Here's what it is not:
It's not coming from the screen or the fan or the speakers (it's under the keyboard). It's not low or slightly annoying (it is a loud squeal). It happens only when the power adaptor is plugged into the laptop.(it used to cease after I unplugged the power adaptor and plugged it back in three times; now that solution doesn't stop the noise anymore). It charges ok, and runs ok, scream or no-scream. It's quiet right now, but if I move the adaptor to another plug it will start again.
I was going to live with this, but today after an hour of operating quietly it just started again, and I hate to leave the house with this going.(it will scream whether the laptop is on or off. I have a really old battery and cannot replace it (I am currently staying in Mexico for the summer). Battery life is 45 min. I haven't tried pulling the battery out. That would be too easy.
This all started when I bought a replacement power adaptor (generic),after the original one melted down, but I could stop the screaming by unplugging/plugging it in again once or twice. Then I bought an expensive iGo adaptor, and it does the same thing.

This also seems to happen when I scroll through my iTunes library but in this case it's a humming sound, when the scrolling stops so does the noise. I've tried muting the speakers but the sound is still there, has anyone else experience this before?

Sounds like a Jumbo jet taking off. Most of the noise sees to be more from the wooshing of the air through the vents rather than the fan.
I've vacuumed all the dust out of it (I bought it used).
Any ideas that don't require major surgery. I'm wondering if putting a new fan in would help? How much are new fans?
Just got a new 2.2 MBP delivered to me yesterday. Didn't seem to have any problems at all until about an hour ago. I just began hearing a metallic "plink" noise every few minutes or so. Its not a click or a tick but more like a hollow plink. It comes at random intervals but sounds like it may be coming when the hard drive(?) or something inside the machine spins.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI bought a MBP 15 inch 2.66ghz brand new back in september. Since my purchase i have has several things that have been annoying the crap out of me.
Issues:
1. Clunk noise coming from HD, I have read some posts and installed Hdapm which reduced the sound a bit (i have the 320gb 5400rpm Fujitsu)
2. I believe becuz of the clunking (parking of the heads) causes my computer to stutter (mini freeze for like 1-2 secs) while using my MBP..
3. The battery used notify me that i had PLENTY of time to use even when i had below 50% battery life left, now (on Firmware 1.6) the battery tells me i usually have like 2:30mins of use when im at 85% or so battery strength left. and YES the screen is dimmed along with the keys.(i have calibrated the battery also)
I went back to 1.6 firmware due to the notion that various people have had better success on their harddrives working "better" with stock, or aftermarket.
I am on a CLEAN install of Snow Leopard...
I have a 7 day old Macbook Pro 13" 2.26GHz and sometimes when I open the screen I hear a click noise coming from the right side of the hinge it happens about half way open and some times when I pick it with the screen open it doesn't happen all the time it was doing it about 30 mins.
ago but as I type this its not doing it. Should I take it to the Apple store tomorrow or should I keep an eye on it and see what happens?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWell, this problem that I thought was coming from the Radeon 4870 fan was really coming from the lower intake fan on my Mac Pro. The rattling noise was coming from this fan itself, and the Radeon 4870 was actually running silent the whole time. This is probably why people with the X1900 and older Mac Pros have been reporting the same issue. This has actually solved the problem for me, my Mac Pro is running silent now: I downloaded SMC Fan Control, then I increased the speed on my intake fan to max, 2800rpm. I let the fan run at max for one minute, I had an idea that this would cause the fan to work out the kinks if it had any. View 4 Replies View RelatedEvery time I start up or wake up my mac pro from sleep I get a large noise that seems to be coming from around the power supply. The best way to describe it is that it soudns like a buzzing sound or like one of those large elctrical transformers outside except not as loud. It goes away within 5-10 minutes.

First of all, my Macbook doesn't make ANY noise. Is very silent, but everytime I start a game, or I start to upload some files, the fans start to flip faster and faster and makes a big noise, like a rocket being launched. When I stop the game, the fans start to go slowly.

I have a Macbook Pro MC666ll/a. It is a core i7 15" with the AG screen. The issue I am experiencing is a random static noise coming from my speakers every now and then. If i have external speakers plugged in then the sound comes from the external speakers. Is this normal?

It sometimes won't do it all day, and then it will randomly start, and won't go away for a while. It's actually doing it right now! I've tried putting it to sleep for a few minutes, but it started back up again when i woke it up. There, it just stopped again! It can last from a few minutes to an hour, completely randomly! This problem started when I had Apple replace the logic board on the Powerbook a few months back, and numerous repairs later, nothing has changed, so I'm hoping someone here has an easy fix!
