Sep 10, 2009

I have a 09 imac 24. I have xp home oem disk that will not complete install. install is fine until it gets to rpcrt4.dll and shell32.dll. It will not copy either of these files. I put the same disk in my macbook and installed perfectly. I used Ntfs and fat32. No good. tried vmware fusion, and same response. apple says call windows, windows says to call mac. I have tried everything and installed in bootcamp but no.

I have a MB Pro with latest Leopard running. HD partitioned into 2. I have a Windows XP Home install CD. How can I get it up and running on my computer? Simple please as I'm not too 'techy'. If possible, it would be nice to install it onto my second partition just to keep things clean on my main one.

Windows On Mac :: Install XP Home Under Boot Camp?

Oct 31, 2009

I am about to install XP Home under Boot Camp and have just read through the Apple Boot Camp installation guide and noticed at the start, that it states that "you must use" Windows XP Home with SP2 or above. I have a very old version of XP Home and wondered how I can tell if it already has SP2 on it? The original Windows XP box has "version 2002" on it but no other indication that it has been service packed. I don't want to try it, just in case it causes installation problems.

Windows On Mac :: Stuck On Windows Vista Home Premium / Unable To Select Operating System

Mar 9, 2008

I installed Windows Vista, and Vista boots up fine. However, I hold down the command keys when starting my computer up again, and it won't let me select Mac OS X. It just starts Vista.

On "My Computer" in Vista I see "Bootcamp (C" and "Macintosh HD (E in my Hard Disks Drives. Also, whenever I start up Vista it tells me something about a wrongly formatted drive. My files are still all in the Mactintosh HD drive, but I don't know how to start up Mac OS X.

Mac Pro :: New OSX Install On SSD - Move Home Folder When Installing?

Looking to use an SSD in a new MP, as a boot disc. Is there any way to designate where the home folder is during installation (and thus avoid a write/delete on the SSD volume)? I know the home directory can be moved after install, but my question is about keeping it off the SSD alltogether.

Software :: Use The Dell Win XP Home Disc To Do The Install On The Imac?

Oct 28, 2007

I have a new Imac and will soon install Leopard

I have in my office 2 Dell PCs that came with Win XP Home which were installed and activated, but are no longer used at all since I had to replace XP home with Win XP Pro due to office networking needs.

So, can I use the Dell Win XP Home Disc (which I really, no longer use) to do the install on the Imac and will Microsoft let me activate it? (I suspect I will have to call them.) I can get the Product Key Number off the side of the Dell tower. That would be a nice savings.

One more question, if I can't use my existing disc and have to buy a fresh Windows OS, would I be better off buying XP Home or Vista Basic. My real need to install Win is just to run MS Money and Word Perfect (I have Word on the Imac but all my previous docs are in WP).

OS X :: How To Find Home Directory For QuickTime Codec Install

May 30, 2009

I'm trying to install the Xvid codec for Quicktime. And in the ReadMe file it tells me this his how I install the codec:

To install this component, just drag the File "XviD_Codec 1.0 alpha.component" into Library/QuickTime. The Library directory can be found either at your home directory (to install just for the actual user) or at the top-level of your startup volume (this needs an administrator account). Do not put in: /System/Library/QuickTime.

It is possible that the QuickTime directory does not yet exists. In that case you can create it yourself. Pay attention to capital letters if you use a case sensitive file system (i.e. UFS). But I haven't got a clue where the Home Directories are.

OS X :: Install SL On Separate HD - Keep Old Home Folder - Doesn't Work

Sep 4, 2009

I installed Snow Leopard on a separate HD I put into the lower OD-bay of my Mac Pro. I created a new account under SL with the same name as my old one under Leopard and migrated only my apps folder using Migration Assistant. Then, in the Accounta prefpane, I did a right-click on the newly created acocunt and pointed it to the "old" home folder on the Leopard drive. The problem is: Somehow Snow Leopard has no access to the folder! Any suggestions on what I missed out on? Right now I'm upgrading my old Leopard installation to Snow Leopard in order to make my "old" home folder a "Snow Leopard compatible" one. Don't know whether this makes sense. EDIT: Or is it because my new account surely has a different user ID and if so, what would be the solution? "chown" might break something, I guess.

Mac Pro :: Windows 7 Home Premium CPU Limitation

Oct 31, 2009

Just for testing purposes, I installed a spare drive and put Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on my Mac Pro 1.1 last night. All of the advice given here on MacRumors so as to install the 64-bit version and get the AHCI working properly went flawlessly with one exception: Boot Camp doesn't like to restart in OSX from Windows after the AHCI patch. But the big issue is: Windows 7 Home Premium continues Microsoft's policy of not supporting multiple processors on any "Home" variant of Windows. (XP, Vista, 7). Task Manager reports only the two cores of the first CPU and ignores the second. To me this isn't important as I intend to continue using XP Pro for my rare ventures into Windows but is important for Mac Pro users considering purchasing Windows 7. If you wish to use Windows effectively on a multi-CPU Mac Pro, you must obtain the "Professional" or "Ultimate" versions.

What I am not sure about, and I know it isn't a feature offered in Windows Home Server, but if I am not mistaken I can use my MacBook to access Windows Home Server to share my media right? Since it is through my network and all would I be able to just designate Windows Home Server as the location to store my Time Machine data? Mac :: What Version Of Windows With Parallels 7 Home Premium

Nov 30, 2009

I have a new Mac but I also have a few bits of software that require windows. I just bought the new Parallels but am so far undecided on what version of windows to install.I have XP, but do not want to install it because support for it will eventually go the way of the dodo bird. Vista is out of the question so that leaves me with Windows 7.Now I guess I need the full version of Windows because on a Mac I cannot upgrade a new install. Having looked at all the Windows 7 versions I have come to the conclusion that I would like WINDOWS 7 STARTER because I don't need any of the advanced features (or the bloat) of 7 Home Premium.

Mac :: Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit Installed On Mac, But Cannot Working?

Nov 12, 2009

I've had Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit installed on this Mac before, and it had nothing but problems. I couldn't get sound, even though the settings and everything said it was enabled and working, and etc. But, more importantly, games would run bad on it.I got Diablo 2 running (256 color game) on it, but the colors were terribly messed up. I'm wondering if this problem was due to the fact my Windows copy wasn't genuine (it was a copy of Windows that came with my mom's computer), if it was because that version was 64-bit, or if it was from my drivers (because there is a problem with these drivers supporting 256 color on the Mac OS).I've got the AppleIntelGMAX3100 video drivers, and they won't let me run Diablo 2 on my Mac side. On Windows, it'll let me run it, but I'm not sure if they cause the discoloration or not.

Windows On Mac :: Home Folder Appears Empty Within BootCamp

Dec 9, 2009

Here's my setup:
Mac Pro (early 2009), 8 core
Bay 1: OS X drive - 10.6.2
Bay 2: Boot Camp drive (Windows XP SP3, running Boot Camp drivers v3.0)
Bay 3: Storage drive (HFS+ formatted)

When I boot into Windows, my OS X drive is perfectly viewable, except that the /Users/username folder appears to be completely empty, if I manually type a path (such as D:UsersusernameDesktop or D:UsersusernameDownloads) then the contents will show up perfectly, but when navagating to the D:Usersusername, Windows shows that folder as empty. I'm running just the Boot Camp 3.0 drivers (i.e. no Macdrive), but I also have VMWare Fusion 3.0 installed on my OS X drive, with my Boot Camp partition set up as a virtual machine. Could this be masking the folder contents from Windows?
