Windows On Mac :: Remapping The CMD Key To CNTRL Key?
Feb 14, 2010
Is it possible to remap the Command key on the mac to function as the control key in Windows 7?
The keyboard shortcuts utilizing the standard Control key in Windows is flimsy and awkward as it requires repositioning your entire left hand to activate any shortcuts.
I find the placement of keys on my MBP very akward. But if only fn = ctrl, control = fn, option = windows, command = alt, then everything would be as close as it could get on a regular Windows keyboard. Is there a way to make that happen? I know there are utilities than let user remap keys but I can't find one that actually modifies the fn key.
New Mac Pro Quad Core Xeon. I want to remap the function keys: F3 (Expose) and F4 (Dashboard). Tried to do so in Expose and Spaces System Pref and in Keyboard/keyboard shortcuts System pref. I Mapped Exp and Dshbrd onto other keys (eg. F18, F19) but the F3 and F4 keys (dedicated Expose and Dashboard keys with icons) retain their original functions - they don't change to blanks. Is there a way to remap or disable those dedicate funtion keys when in an application like PS or AE. I can't seem to be able to change those particularly dedicated keys to work in the applications like other Function keys.
I have one thing that really bugs me about my Macbook Pro: There is no delete key! I've become accustomed to using this when typing, and really miss it on my Macbook.
I am aware that fn + backspace = delete, but Ideally, I'd like to reconfigure the eject button, to act as a delete key, and have it so that fn + eject would act as the 'eject' button.
I've downloaded a program for remapping keyboards called 'double command', but there is no option to do what I have explained, within this program.
I'd like to re-assign the Dashboard key (F4) on my 13" MBP to Expose's "Show Desktop". So far I've been doing this with FunctionFlip, but its not remapping the key reliably anymore. It only works when the Finder is in the foreground; any other applications, pressing F4 brings up Dashboard instead of the desired Expose Show Desktop. Anyone know of other methods to re-assign the Dashboard key? I'm running 10.6.2.
My old MBP keyboard had, from left-to-right, spacebar - command - enter. My new MPB has space - command - option. I've got really used to having an enter key where that option key is now. Is anyone else in the same boat, and have you found a way to remap that right-option key to "enter?" I thought DoubleCommand might do the trick, but it looks like you're limited to a set of predefined keyswaps, none of which are what I'm looking for.
Cant stand my Apple keyboard so forked out for something better. But didn't get the Mac specific model just a model and spare Mac keys. The specific Mac version comes with a fn key and the similar controls a Mac keyboard would, the one I bought does not. . Will I be able to map a spare key on this new keyboard to function as er, fn key and get it to operate volume/media etc? (Couldn't find a Mac specific version of the keyboard in Europe let alone the UK not prepared to pay even more for import charges from the US).
I'm new to osx, and need windows for my work too. After playing a few days with the apple keyboard, I exchanged it for my old logitech keyboard. After a few weeks I got used to the Ctrl/Alt/Command key differences, but one think kept bothering me:
- Home / End Keys.
I know I can use Ctrl + Left or Ctrl+Right, to have the same effect as the home/end keys in windows. But I had to disable Spaces, because it also uses those keys. What kind of programs or hints are available to remap such behaviour. I found DoubleCommand, which says it works in Leopard 10.5.2, and it has this one option, but I can't seem to get it working.
I have two keyboards, one is a regular Mac keyboard, and the other is a Microsoft wireless one. The problem is I'm used to the command key being where the alt key is on the wireless one and the option key being where the windows flag key is, which is acting as the command key... Is it possible to remap the keys of each individual keyboard instead of on the system? Or would I have to change it every time I switch keyboards? I'm using DoubleCommand as my keyboard remapping software.
I'm wondering if there is any way to remap the Itunes fuction keys (Play/Pause, Volume, Prev, Next, etc). I'm not using an apple keyboard and the way OSX has re-maped the functions is really screwy, so I'd like to set them myself. Can it be done through iTunes or does anyone know of any application that will allow this?
I have just had to replace the keyboard on my son's MBP and it is one of the first C2D ones with the old function key layout on the keyboard. I was not able to get a replacement with the old layout so have one of the later ones. Does anyone know how I can update it to have the newer layout?
My wife has a MBP with an Apple Keyboard (with numeric keypad). She is a teacher and has to sit down and enter lots of grades into an online system (in a web browser). To move between fields she has to hit the TAB key, obviously. However, it would be much faster for her if we could re-map one of the keys near the numeric keypad to act as a TAB key. That way, she could enter the grades using only her left hand. If could be one of the function keys, the clear key, I don't really care. I've tried to find things to accomplish this and have had no luck so far. She uses Firefox, so it could even be a FF plugin since we only need this re-mapping while using Firefox.
I'd love to be able to do something more useful with some of my function keys than the default set-ups of brightening the screen, the keyboard backlight etc.For instance what I'd like would be for F5 and F6 (the keyboard backlight keys) to change the lighting only if combined with shift or the cmd key.And then remap the keys so that, for instance, by pressing F5 I could switch to/open my Mail app [rather than clicking on it in the dock]. Or that simply pressing F6 might open a new compose message window in Mail.I'd happily pay for software that lets me do this kind of thing, if necessary.
I spilled a bit of drink on my Aluminum Apple Keyboard, and now the F12 (volume +) key doesn't work. The F10 (mute) and F11 (volume -) still work, so, is there a way to do THIS:
Is it better for me to buy the upgrade for windows 7, from vista to windows 7 or to buy the full copy? If i buy the fully version, should i get rid of my pardon, and re-do it with bootcamp, or should i just do it over my current pardon? (Vista) I just want the best way, less pain, less anger. Im willing to pay more for full IF IT IS THE BEST way to do it.
so i have a windows XP professional disk, SP2 and all. i am trying to install windows, i get as far as partitioning the disk, but once it says "please insert XP disk" i do that, and it will think for a few minutes, and make a loud noise [coming from the mac] then a message pops up and says 'please insert installation disk.' the disk is brand new, what am i doing wrong? should i be partitioning the windows side larger?
i have my aluminum 2.4GHz 4gb RAM aluminum macbook with the geforce 9400m. and i was wondering. is DirectX 9 better then DirectX 10?. even if the difference is only 8 FPS it still counts.(really the only game im going to play is elder scrolls 4 oblivion)
just trying to get back into Windows 7 after installing it via Boot Camp. Only thing is that holding down the option key during restart does nothing, and although the partition in which Windows 7 is installed under shows up in finder, I am unable to view it in system preferences so that I can boot from it. Any advice?
Ok, Here is the scoop. I am trying to get Wifi to work on my macbook while on XP. When I put in the disk and it says "The package requires a newer version of Windows Installer. Would you like to update?" I say yes and it says "The requires resoruce update is missing." and if I click no it says "The operation is aborted." or something.
I just purchased a new iMac (2.66 c2d & 4gb of ram), Parallels 4, and Windows XP. I would like to get great performance whenever I use Windows XP and would like to know which installation procedure would help accomplish that.
Would Parallels provide me with a better user experience by installing Windows directly via Parallels OR by having Parallels utilizing a Boot Camp Partition? Which is better and why? Also, how much memory should I allocate to Parallels/Windows XP?
Last night I installed VMWare Fusion and Windows 7 on my Unibody MBP running SL. When I use Fusion, my computer slows to a crawl. I spent a few hours getting Windows set up and installing software last night.
I would like to try using Boot Camp instead, but do not want to lose all of the software and files that I have installed. Is it possible to set up Boot Camp, and keep the same Windows setup?
A question about windows 7 and a Mac pro 3.1 edition 2008. I have installed windows 7 and all is fine and dandy everything works, except in the bottom right hand corner there the error flag showing on the tool bar.
This is the error.
Apple Memory Controller GPE event is not compatible with windows 7.
Im having trouble with VMware.. If I set the wireless network connection to NAT, the internet works, but my xbox 360 wont show up in the media streaming options in windows media player. However, if I change the network settings to bridged, I lose my internet connection (well.. sometimes it works.. 80% of the time it doesnt..) Connecting to bridged is the only way I can connect to my 360, and only some of the time where the internet will work. Is there a way to fix the problem with bridged or NAT so they both work together?

I burned numerous dvd's with my old Toshiba laptop for all of my videos and such with Windows XP. Now after my Toshiba crapped out and I switched to a Mac I was wondering why when I put the DVD into the laptop (MacBook Pro Intel processor) why I can only see the name of the dvd and not the contents. I hope someone can help me since I hate having to boot up Windows in Parallels and then play using Windows or drag it to my mac partition since this takes time and I just really hate having to see Windows load on my Mac. Anyones help is greatly appreciated.
I had a Windows based PC a couple of years ago that had crashed. So recently i tried to put the files from my old hard drive from my Windows computer to my Mac. In order to keep track of what i have copied and what I haven't i thought it would be good to delete the stuff of my windows hard drive once it was copied. However, it doesn't let me delete anything of the Windows drive since it is set to read only. Is there a way around this? i've tried everything i can think of, but haven't found a soluti
i'm using macosx 10.6.4 and bootcamp assistant 3.1

If I migrate my W7 machine to my Mac mini, will Windows make me reactivate the license? Is that even a big deal? If I use the ethernet cable option, will I need just the regular ethernet cable or a crossover cable?
I've tried re-installing and updating every possible graphics related driver for Windows 7 i cannot for love or toffee get the bloody thing to even recognize my display. I am using a 26" tv as an external display, it works on OS X (very easily), windows XP (also very easily) and even Vista (also easily) and connecting through a DVI/HDMI connector. Why not windows 7? I've scoured the web for answers but can't find anything. Is anyone at least in the same boat as me? I really need this solved soon
