On my MacBook i am having a little trouble actually installing windows on a bootcamp partition. When installing XP it just installs and then when i boot into the partition it just says 'disk error press any key to reboot' and when i try to install windows 7 it says i cant because it needs to be NTFS formatted, so how can i format it to NTFS?

After trying to install Windows 7 on a 32 GB partition using Boot Camp Assistant, I received an error message saying that Windows 7 needs to be installed on a partition formatted as NTFS.
How do I format the Windows 7 partition as NTFS?
The steps outlined by Boot Camp Assistant don't seem to include an option
to format a partition as NTFS.
Does anyone know how can i install Vista home premium on my imac? ive been using boot camp to do all the steps but im stuck at where i should choose NTFS format partition had disk. Seems like mine is FAT32.

2.Partition, divide equally(116GB each)
3.Insert Vista disk and start installation
4.Install Vista and insert CD key
5.custom installation
6.Now this is where i stuck

i have a 500GB HDD which has two 250GB partitions, one which is working for time machine, and another one for storage, that one for storage is NTFS, so i can just read but not write files, which is very annoying.

The computer currently tells me that the drive is not formatted for installing Win 7 on it. I had used this drive before for Leopard, cloned it to another drive (bay 2), upgraded to Lion, and erased and formatted the drive in bay 1, but not for the NTFS or MS DOS (FAT).

I'm working on an iMac that has Vista (yuck!) installed on the hard drive. When I boot up and external with OSX, the internal partition is not recognized by Finder. Disk Utility claims its HFS+ but will not mount it. When I boot the machine with GParted, it also claims the partition is HFS+. It looks like Vista was installed over the OSX partition and the GUID still thinks its HFS+. Is there a way to correct this so that it shows up as NTFS? I would like to use GParted or WinClone to back up the partition.

I partitioned the hard drive to have both an OSX Journaled Partition for 10.5 and an NTFS partition for Windows XP Pro SP3. I wish to create a bootable backup for this computer onto an external USB drive. (e.g. if I remove the internal hard drive, except for the speed difference, I should not notice a difference). How is this done? Most copying programs don't seem to make the NTFS partition bootable, and any mix-and-matching ends up making it go kaput. (I also wish to be able to copy this backup partition back onto an internal SATA drive should the original drive die.) Also, when I press alt at the EFI screen to select boot devices, none of the partitions on my external hard drive appear, even though I made an image of my Windows partition there, which should be bootable.

I went to Disk Utility to see the NTFS partition, the one I installed my Windows 7 on, but it says the format is in MS-DOS(FAT) whereas I clearly see it shows as NTFS on Windows 7. It is also greyed out, named disk0s3.
I tried to verify the disk and it fails as follows:

In Bootcamp I follow the guidelines as stated for installing Windows XP Professional. However, after selecting the size of the required Windows partition during the Bootcamp Assistant install, it automatically goes into copying the appropriate windows files into 'whatever'. On Restart it gives me the "Press any key to boot from CD. Disk Error. Press any key to restart". Pressing any key DOES NOT work and I can only get out of this by turning off the computer. I have run a search on these forums to see if there is a solution to this and the response is essentially that I have to "format the partition to either the FAT or NTFS. I am following the install disk BUT it does not give me the option to format the windows partition. What am I doing wrong?

Selected the first option for partition of 32Gb, ran the XP Pro SP2 disc and it never gave me the option to format... Obviously got a "disc error, press any key to continue" message since the drive is not "bootable." So I found a thread online that sent me to the XP site to discuss FAT32 issues. The drive can't be larger than 32Gb (which it shows 32,600 after the partition), so I deleted the part. and rebuilt it at 30Gb. Still didn't give me the option to format the drive! If I create a windows partition using bootcamp and then go into disk utility and erase to fat32 will this allow a boot into the xp drive? My xp disc keeps restarting before it gives me the opportunity to format the drive to either a ntfs or a fat so I need a way around this?

In windows, I need to shrink the Windows drive, and then create 2 extra drives from it.
However, I can shrink the drive, but when I try to Format, it tells me that it cannot find the drive, and then it changes the drive types to all "Dynamic" including the Mac Drive.
And once this happens, I can no longer access the Mac drive during Boot, and windows will not load, as it cannot find the drive during windows boot up. And which point, I have to restore the system and it takes up to 6 hours to installed Lion, as my Internet is slowing that a cold winters day.Â
So, my question is the following.
How can I successfully shrink the drive.
Then Partition the FREE space
Then Format to NTFS without loosing drive type and integrity?Â

I am trying to format my external drive to have (2) partitions. A NTFS for backing up my Windows computer and a HFS for backing up my MacBook Pro.
This is what ive tried:
1.) Create 2 partitions on my Mac in Disk Utility. 1 partition HFS, 1 partition FAT32. After doing this both show up in OSX but neither one shows up in WinXP. I was hoping the FAT32 would show up in WinXP so I can convert it to NTFS.
2.) Create 2 partitions in WinXP using Disk Management. 1 partition is NTFS and 1 is FAT32. Connected the drive to my MBP and both partitions mounted in Finder. I then opened Disk Utility and tried to "Erase" the FAT32 partition to HFS. The process seemed to be working but then it changed the name of the partition to disk1s1 and nothing else. The partition doesnt mount in Finder or WinXP.
3.) Create 2 partitions in WinXP using Disk Managment. Both partitions as NTFS. Connected to MBP and both partitions mounted in Finder. Opened Disk Utility and tried to "Erase" one of the NTFS systems to HFS. Same thing happen as #2, renamed the partition but didnt do anything else. The partition doesnt show up in Finder or WinXP.
I'm running Snow Leopard on my new Macbook Pro. I've got a 1.5TB External hard drive that I'm trying to figure out how to format in HFS+ with Apple Partition Map. I can figure out how to format in HFS using Disk Utility, however it still does it in GUID format and I do not know how to do it in Apple Partition Map.
Googleing this for hours has lead with all kinds of information on how to go to GUID FROM Apple Partition Map but not the other way around. I know GUID is the new hottness.. but this drive will be used exclusively to connect to my XBOX 360 and it supposedly only reads HFS+ when its formatted with Apple Partition Map. (I have tried it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID, and the XBOX does NOT recognize it) I do not want to use Fat 32, (I know that that is the other major option) beacuse it limits file size.

I had windows vista installed but suddenly the audio decided to become faulty, after spending a day trying to fix it i realized I have a windows 7 install disc so i might as well just replace vista with windows 7. I didnt take care of vista or ever register it so it became quite a task to upgrade so i just deleted the partition and went to create a new one and just do a full install of windows 7.
I made the partition but the wrong format, so i removed it through boot camp assistant and created another, except now it keeps giving me the "back up the disk and use disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using boot camp assistant again" Now, I'd love to do this, except I have no idea what I'm doing and WHY this error has occured. After becoming frustrated I switched from my imac to my macbook pro and received the same error when trying to create a partition. So any help on exactly what I need to do would be a HUGE help. I only use windows for music production (I know, seems backwards, but I use Sony Acid and FL Studio so I'm stuck with Windows)
I'm going to buy my first Macbook this weekend and I'm trying to get myself ready so that I don't have to waste precious playing time on stuff like this I have an external hard drive filled with music, videos and files. I would like to keep using my drive on my mac to access my files and save backups etc. The hard drive is in NTFS format and from what I understand the mac will be able to read but not write to it - which isn't what I want. Ideally I don't want to lose the content on the drive, but if I have to I could slowly copy it all onto dvds. If possible I also want the drive to be compatible with Windows so I can plug it into parents/friends/uni's computers and still be able to view/add content on rare occasions. What format should the drive be and how do I do that? (I think I can manage to do it once someone points me in the right direction)

Some time ago I had a problem with my iMac. Turned out my internal HD was broken so I got a new one.
The problem is that after I got my iMac with the new INTERNAL HD back, I was unable to write data on my EXTERNAL (Toshiba) HD, which until then I had no problems with. When I checked the format of it, it now says NTFS.Â
As I have more than 1 TB of data on it which would take forever to back up, is there another way to change it's status and write on it again? I was once able to do it, so I don't know where the problem is.....Â

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was trying out to test if I might want to use OSX since I was always using Windows XP, but apparently I did some stupid things while I was on OSX. I wanted to expand my OSX partition but I couldn't do the typical dragging to adjust the size, so I pressed on the + button on disk utility and my windows partition became 2 equal partitions. But that wasn't what I wanted so what I did was to click - and not sure that that was an actual confirmation for deletion, I clicked the button to Doom! So now, I'm left with a single Mac partition with the rest of HDD in free space condition. I didn't create a new partition or read or write to the sector. The question is, thus, if there is anyway to restore or undelete that partition that was so unfortunate?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI wanted a larger Windows partition so I went into Boot Camp assistant and deleted the Windows partition, made a new one and proceeded to insert my Windows CD. It went through the installation process and i selected the right drive/partition to have a quick NTFS format. After the format, my MacBook restarted and stalled. Needless to say, Boot Camp ran a quick NTFS format on the entire drive.
Now, is there any way to recover any of the files that were quickly formatted? Is there any good software out there that may be able to recover anything?
