I have given up on Time Machine (see post 8th Aug), and I have now dragged the contents of my user folder to an external HD for back-up. Is there any reason why the Library folder with the preferences in wont copy?
View 1 RepliesI have manually backed up all my files under User folder without using any of system backup tool(due to technical issue, i have no other option rather than copying manually). I have erased all hard disk and would like to copy everything back to Macintosh. Then the problem is when I tried to copy old Library folder to Macintosh HD user folder, it is saying I need to input password to continue, then I entered password and it still says i don't have permission.

I have a hard drive on my 2008 MacPro that's problematic and so I bought a new drive and installed Mavericks on it and am booting just fine on the new drive. There is however, one folder in the Library/Preferences folder that I need to copy over to the new drive. All the tricks for accessing the Library folder work great on the start up drive, but I can't seem to access the Library folder on the old drive (both drives in the MacPro as it has 4 drive bays), even though the drive will mount. How can I see that Library folder on the old drive? Note while I can mount the old drive, I can't boot to it.

So, I'm trying to copy the Mail folder in my user's library on my old machine onto my new machine.
I've placed them in the correct folder, when I open mail it's not loading my old messages.
Any thoughts on why it isn't working? Am I missing something?
EDIT: Aha! Success, I copied my mail.plist file (under Library > Preferences) onto my new machine as well.

I've come across a strange behaviour of Finder when copying a folder over another with the same name. I'm using 10.4.11.
Say I have a folder named "Test" and it contains "File1" and "File2" and I copy it over another folder named "Test", which contains "File3" and "File4".
After copying I would expect folder "Test" to contain all four files, but it doesn't! It will only contain the two that I copied over, the original two will be deleted.
Is there any way to have finder replace files of the same name when copying and retain all other files in the destination folder?

I would like to create an archive of important application installers and I will sync the contents between two systems MacPro and Macbook Pro.
I need to pull the names of the application/developers from somewhere so I figured I would use the Application Support directory.
So I need a way to copy this directories folder structure without any of the file contents. Is there an easy way to do this. I found a post with an Automator script but the link is dead [URL]
I also found this post that refers to doing it in terminal but since it is the app support directory I am wary to do this as I am not familiar with terminal at all and I am not clear on what exactly to write in the old_dir / new_dir section. I figure it would be something like this /Library/Application Support but I dont want to make a mistake.

Because of problems accessing our network using Snow Leopard, I've started using the 'Favorites' folder as a 'shortcut' to our networked drives. It works fine and is very useful. A colleague has asked me to set the same facility up on his computer. When I dragged 'Favorites' from his 'Libary' folder to the sidebar, it appeared there with a heart icon. 'Sweet!' we thought. However, we then found that when we dragged one of the folders which he wanted to have in his favorites over to the sidebar, the O.S. proceeded to make a copy of the whole folder contents - instead of it working as a shortcut. What are we doing wrong?

However I have seen it because after converting samples Logic showed me the folder and its contents. I would very much like to move the samples from their present location in this folder on the startup disk to the EXS 24 samples folder on the external RAID array that is dedicated to this purpose - - but I don't know how to make the Library folder visible.

I bought another external hard drive and I want to copy my library onto that. My operating system is Vista. I read somewhere that deleting the content from those folders would speed up your Mac, which I believed until I did so...I emptied my trash, and everything was running smoothly for a few minutes...now my mac is EXTREMELY slow, it take FOREVER to open Applications and Documents, the volume keys are messed up and don't even work, I click it and 10 minutes later it responds...and everything is messed up! I thought if I gave it time, it will go back to normal, but no, it's been 4 days and nothing!
I don't have Time Machine set, nor do I have OS X Snow Leopard disk. Is there a way to solve this problem without buying a new disk? My parents lost the old disk, and we aren't financially comfortable right now..
A friend has asked me to copy their i-photo library from there imac onto cd/dvd prior to giving the mac to their grandad.I am a windows user and not that familiar with mac. My iTunes Library is too large and taking up too much of my iMac's 1Tb HD. The iTunes Library is currently at 381 GB. Along with a healthy music collections, I have a ton of video files. I recently tried to import more video files and I got a message that there was not enough room on the hard drive.
I have read up on how to copy the itunes library to an external hard drive, and although time consuming sounds pretty easy. However I have a few concerns about 'MOVING' the itunes library. Essentially copying it to the new external hard drive and then deleting the old library on my iMac's HD. If I do that will I have issues with:
1. Using iTunes playing songs, video etc. Will it have difficulty locating it's new location because it is no longer on the 'local' HD? Or if it works ok, will it be really slow?
2. Will my 2 Apple TV's not be able to stream the content?
3. Will my Time Machine backups automatically include contents of the new external HD? I am assuming not.
OR is it just plain easier to leave the iTunes library on the local iMac HD and delete music and video not currently being used? ie; add it into iTunes when I want it, and delete it when I don't?

Is there any reason why that would be better than managing the picture folder structure manually and just having a reference to the pictures?
I think iTunes has the same feature and offers to import/copy the music files into its library.
I plan to get my first Mac next month and wonder if I should enable this "copy items to the iPhoto Library" when moving my 50k pictures from Windows to the Mac or if that's not a good idea...
my ehd crashed (the one that I was using for my Itunes library) fortunately, I did a CCC to a separate EHD last summer so I have most of the music. I know how to do CCC and I know how to MOVE my itunes folder and consolidate. But now, what I want to do is COPY my itunes library from my current bootable EHD (from the CCC) and move it back to my main HD. But I do not want to "move the library" and consolidate. I want to keep a back up on the EHD in case this happens again...
View 3 Replies View Relatedhaving spend days reading various iTunes HowTo's and guides, I still do not know how to accomplish this: My family's CD collection comprises about 700 discs. All of them are in my Mac's 240GB iTunes library as Apple Lossless files. My dad uses a PC (urgh) and wants to have all of the songs on his hard drive, too, to be able to sync them with his iPod. His iPod, however, only has a capacity of 120GB and he has got a 160GB external hard drive for the music files, which is why I cannot simply copy my Lossless library to his PC.
So the callenge is not move the entire library, there are tons of guides to do this. Instead, I want to convert the music to AAC on my Mac first and then only move these files to his PC's external drive via network. As I have put a lot of effort into my Lossless library, I do not want to take any risks (however, I do have a time machine backup).

I have my iTunes library stored on an external hard drive when using with my MacBook. I've just bought a Mac Mini and want to copy the entire collection over to my Mini's hard drive, but using File > Library > Organise Library and Consolidate files doesn't appear to work. Most files are copied, but some, randomly, aren't. Most of my purchased songs don't get copied either. View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to manually add color profiles for my camera in Adobe Lightroom. The path is /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles/Camera. Another folder for my DSLR needs to be created under Camera where the profile files will be placed.
If I go to the Library folder by selecting option and Go, the path ends at CameraProfiles and all I see is index.dat. If I double click the hard drive icon, I see the folder but cannot add anything.
