Now when I drag things to the trash a message comes up telling me if I want to delete the file(s), they will be permanently delete. I don't no what happened but I used to be able to drag the file into the trash and empty the trash whenever I wanted.
View 3 RepliesFor some reason, now when I delete or try to drag files/folders to trash, I get warning message 'This item will be deleted immediately. You can't undo this action.' And the files do NOT go into trash. Same if I CMD delete. I noticed this when I emptied the Aperture trash, got a warning something about permissions and cannot empty some files. They disappeared from Aperture, but the referenced master files were still in the original folder on my HD.(So I relocated the masters I was keeping, then deleted the remaining, they did not go into the trash but were permanently deleted). I don't recall changing any settings!I checked in Finder > Preferences > Advanced > 'Empty trash securely' is NOT selected.

View 24 Replies View RelatedAnyone have a clue why my MBP is doing this? somehow I my trashcan acquired a file that said backup.something which looked like a full backup of my harddrive, but I already have it backed up in time machine on my backup drive. It's been deleting from 300,000 down to 80,000 for about 13 hours. I tried to take the folder out but it just started copying everything to the desktop which was gonna take the same amount of time. Should I let it keep deleting?

When i right click a single item to delete, the only option i appear to have is to delete everything there. Surely this can't be right?
I just opened my Trash bin, and there were maybe 12-15 items in ithere. But when I use Secure Delete, the pop-up box says there are 931 items, and it then proceeds to delete them---I guess.I only saw the 12-15 files, and that's it.

Running 10.6.4 on a 27" iMac 3.06 GHz C2D. I was irritated by sometimes not being able to empty items from my trash(message that file was in use when it wasn't). I found on lancelhoff.com a command for terminal(cd ~/.Trash && sudo rm -rf ) followed by directory/filename which allowed these pesky files to be deleted which worked great. I was showing my manager the trick I'd found and while doing so, it stopped deleting the files.
Now when I put items in the trash I get a message 'Are you sure you want to delete "xxxx.yyy"? This item will be deleted immediately. You can't undo this action" instead of putting it in the trash. The files I was trying to delete when I was doing my doomed demo will not delete even after a restart. I did a fix permissions on my drive with Disk Utility which was no help in this regard.
I'm trying to trash two things called MEMSTICK.IND and MSTK_PRO.IND. They have little locks by them and I can't drag them into the garbage. If I can get them into the garbage I can delete them but I can't get them into the trash. They were in there before but someone dragged them out.

I've got a 2011 iMac 21" running on Lion. I've been backing up using Time Machine since september, and now need to delete from september-march. i've placed these into the trash and have attempted removing them, but when it says items to delete (normally a positive number) it goes into negative eg. -14,923. It isn't allowing me to place them back in the Backups.backupdb folder, and it will not remove them, so they're in the trash folder and can't be removed. i've attempted the sudo rm rf trash command, but terminal isn't allowing it. So if I want to completely remove this backup, is there a command or a process that i can use?

I thought if you hold down option and control or option and command, and go to empty trash these stubborn items that say they are still in use, when they are not, will go away. Shutting down and restarting MBP won't make them go away either.

Now in XP I was able to remove certain files from the trash bin. I never actually emptied the entire trash bin, but once in a while would delete the oldest files from the trash bin and keep the new ones.
Is this possible in OS X? I was only able to empty the entire trash bin, but not certain parts of it.

This often happens when I manually delete podcasts from iTunes, or drag an item such as a PDF from my downloads folder to the trash. The dock icon remains in it's "empty" state and bring up the trash finder window also shows that it is empty. If I restart my MacBook however, the items appear in the trash and are able to be deleted.

My problem is that I can't drag a file to the trash. When I try to delete a file by right-clicking and choose "move to trash" I get a message telling me that the item will be deleted permanently and that I cannot undo this action. In other words it is possible to delete a file permanently, but I would like to have the option to move them to the trash first. I have recently tried to partition the internal hard-drive using Boot Camp, however unsuccessfully. I don't know if the two are related. I have Macbook 13,3" early 2010 with the latest version of Snow Leopard, 10.6.4.

How do you delete specific search items in your (browser) form history? I don't mean a blanket "clear all", I just want to delete my typos. In Windows, you just need to scroll down to it and hit "delete". Doing that on Mac only erases a character from your search.
