Software :: How To Reinstall OS9 On A Computer When Already Running 10.4?
Jul 8, 2009
I have a Quicksilver G4 that is running 10.4 and I need to replace the OS with OS9 and I'm trying to a clean install (this computer is running a piece of equipment that needs software that only runs in OS9 and running it in classic mode won't work). I'm trying to boot from the OS9 CD but the computer won't start from the CD - when I hold down the C key it will try to use the CD but I get the alternating folder with the classic mac happy face and question mark. When I hold down the option key only the current HD with OSX shows up, and not the CD. It's entirely possible, since this disc is 10+ years old, that the install CD has something wrong with it and is no longer

I've a beloved Powerbook G4 from 2005, one of the last, and am running Leopard upgraded from Tiger. It's cpu etc from the hardware info page:

Processor Name:PowerPC G4 (1.2)
Processor Speed:1.5 GHz
Number Of CPUs:1
L2 Cache (per CPU):512 KB
Memory:1 GB
Bus Speed:167 MHz
-SODIMM0/J25LOWER: (x2)
Size:512 MB
Type:DDR SDRAM

Status:OK
-Macintosh HD:
Capacity:74.41 GB
Available:15.54 GB
Writable:Yes
File System:Journaled HFS+
BSD Name:disk0s3It's long in the tooth now I know, but I've never had it crash and am loathe to upgrade simply for the sake of it, but recently it's had growing problems that I'd love to hear some advice on. It's been running hotter and hotter every year, and whilst I live in the outback it never used to singe my lap the way it does now. I installed Leopard a few months ago and realise that a new OS can have it working harder, but even since then it's been getting worse and worse with greatly shortened battery life too. During the day I've taken to plonking it upon one of those squishy icepacks with a teatowel around it to keep it cool....................

I previously had Lion installed and decided to wipe my Mac and re-upgrade to Lion. So, I've both zapped the parameter RAM and erased the hard drive, then done a fairly normal install of Snow Leopard. It successfully goes through this process, using my recovery disc, I get through Apple's initial "out-of-box experience" including setting up a user account, and get to the desktop.
There are no issues to this point, no errors, etc. However, having put in the bundled apps DVD, when I run the installer, I get the error: "There were errors with the installation. The installation failed. An unknown error occurred. The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance." I have repeatedly gotten this error. I have both done a simple reformat of my HDD and a "write zeros" option.
Also, I have tried this before and after doing any software updates. I've also used the Apple Hardware Test which says there were no problems. Disk Utility shows S.M.A.R.T. status as verified, hard drive formatting takes a normal amount of time, and there are no other symptoms of any kind. The unit is stock, and there is nothing attached except for the AC adaptor. The only thing I haven't done yet is do the Lion upgrade, but honestly I shouldn't have to do that just to reinstall the bundled apps.

My son installed Microsoft Office on his computer and he used the same serial number as the one on my computer. Now every time he uses office I have quit it form my computer and when I need to use it he is quit his office.
Well, we have student teacher copy of office with 3 serial numbers. I have 2 other serial numbers that he could have used. Is there a way to wipe the serial number he entered on his computer and use the other serial number? If not how could I totally remove office from his computer and install it again with a new serial number.

I am trying to reinstall Mac OSX, but my computer does not read installation cd. After restart, I hold C but either eject cd or doesn't read and computer boots up normally. I even ordered a new pack of installation cd, but still the same problem. Is there anybody can help me fixing this issue, because my Macbook pro has lots of software problem and when I spoke to tech, they said it needs to reformat and reinstall the OSX to solve all my problems.

Having upgraded to mac os x lion, I now find that some of my (important) apps are no longer supported. My question: if I insert the CD and reinstall Snow Leopard will I be doing any harm to the computer? This seems to be a cheaper option than re-purchasing apps that no longer work. Any advice will be gratefully received.

I recently installed (4) - 4gb RAM modules and I'm worried that they may be running too hot. The image attached is from the machine just essentially sitting idle all day. Only 1gb of the 17gb are wired. When I do put the Mac to work, either through Handbrake or running Autocad through Fusion, the temp on module A1 reaches 173 degrees and the fan speed just about doubles.

I have been trying to get certificates from our AD PKI to our Mac Laptops for some time now under 10.6 so they can authenticate WPA2-Enterprise to our Cisco ACS wireless and Juniper SSL VPN.Since then working with Apple I was told to move to trying this under 10.7 with Profile Manager.I have set up the Windows 2008 r2 NDES server to accept the SCEP requests from the payload that Profile Manager distributes to the 10.7 clients.
After a lot of troubleshooting and work over a few weeks all is working well now. The test users can auth to wireless and the VPN.However - The cert that is returned to the user's login keychain for the client is exportable, even though we mark it as non-exportable in the certificate request template.I have been told that this is expected behavior by keychain when it requests a certificate via SCEP.
So I am looking for two things:Really?? You cannot get a cert in there as non-exportable? andDoes anyone know if this is a defect in Keychain or SCEP?The only other workaround I can find is to then request the cert, and from the client (an admin as we dont want the user to have the exportable private key) exports the cert, deletes it from keychain and then re-imports it with the import -x flag so it cannot be exported. This obviously doesnt scale and requires an admin to touch every laptop.

My computer is running very slow. Beach ball all the time. I have about 35mb hard drive free space and 4 MB RAM. I monitor with Activity Monitor. Everytime I open a program, like Safari, Adobe, Activity Monitor shows they use up to 99% CPU. It goes downafter a little while to a small perecntage, until I try to do something with them. Then many times, it will jump back up to high %CPU and give me the beachball and run very slow. This is a new thing. Does anyone know what may be the problem with my computer?

Computer is running very slow, everything is buffering when in use, websites will not fully load.Trying to find a utility clean-up type program but am not sure which one would be best to use.Already tried repairing disk utilities, sped things up for about an hour then went right back to working slowly.Created a new user account to see if it was a start up issue, but this made no difference.

Safari locking up originally. I would get beach balls pretty often, and simple tasks like opening a new tab would take a long time. One day last week I noticed it took like 30 minutes to index in spotlight..just random weird things like that.Yesterday, I got home and the computer had the little loading icon on the middle of my desktop and was completely locked up. The computer wasnt doing anything other than running normal processes.

I just thought i'd share my applecare story. I have a 2.2 ghz SR macbookpro. the headphone jack was acting a little static and i thought that the computer was running warm. So i sent it to apple with my installed seagate 500gb 7200rpm drive. Apple called me and told me they couldn't fix it with my drive in it because it wasn't under their warranty. But, they would put a free 160gb drive in instead and mail my 500gb back. They also did some additional work.
So the first time i sent it in they replaced:
Logic Board and graphics processor
Left in/out board
flex cable
hard drive
flex cable (a diff one)
left fan
right fan.............

I have a 2008 non-unibody MacBook Pro. When I boot the computer, sometimes the display does not turn on. I've tried using the flashlight technique, and there isn't even anything on the LCD. I know the computer is on because it makes the chime and if I enter my password I can adjust the volume and play music. Occasionally, resetting the SMC will fix the issue temporarily, but it doesn't always work. What should I do?

I've just bought a Dell 2209WA. I'm struggling a little with colour profiles and monitor setting, not sure which is the best thing to do. I'll be working with some things that need to be printed out and some that are for web only. So I'm guessing I'll need to use different colour profiles depending on what I'm doing, is that right? Can anyone recommend some to me?1. Is it possible to close my macbook pro yet still have it working through my monitor? I have a wireless keyboard so it'd be preferable if I close close the mac and run the monitor from it.

Recently my computer has started to run slowly in things like games and the only time that it runs normaly is when I restart my computer and then it gets slow again after about 5 min. My computer's cpu has been running at about 77-87 deggres celcius. Is that the normal running temps of a 2010 13-inch macbook pro? I have asked on some other places and they have said that it is dust in my comp that is heating the cpu up and therefore making it run slower.

I'm using an iMac and find it difficult when running SketchUp/ Layout. It takes up to 5 to 6 mins to load a Layout file or it re-calculate and halt every few minutes when I am using SketchUp. While waiting for it's re-calculation or loading up, I can still use other softwares normally.Â
I wonder if it is one of the following problems: -Â
1. The softwares use massive RAM that my computer don't have? if yes, how can I allocate more RAM for these 2 softwares?Â
2. My computer is not powerful enough to run rendering softwares, like SketchUp/ Layout? Â
The following is the spec of my computer, Intel Core i3, 3.06 GHz.Â

I just bought the 13" Macbook Pro. I love my computer. I am having issues with heat coming from the computer. When I touch the left side of the keyboard, the keys are burning hot. I downloaded iStats widget and it says my computer is running at 103 degress F. Should I be concerned? It makes an outrageous amount of noise. This computer is only 1 week old! (new)THE CPU IS CURRENTLY RUNNING 180 degrees F with 2gb of ram left.
